A Giveaway Book – Eventually

Martingales blog http://shopmartingale.com/images/marketing/email_templates/logos.gif today features a wonderful new book called FEED SACKS. It’s a smaller softcover book with soooooo many pictures included that I’m tempted to keep it but I have decided that I will give it away after I’ve enjoyed reading it. That’s fair, isn’t it? And in the interest of space on my bookshelves, I think it’s the right thing to do – haha!

I am not a fervent lover of feedsacks – in fact, I had a HUGE box of them that I sold during one of our big events years ago. There are so many other fabrics that I love instead of making myself sew with feedsacks and/or 30’s fabrics.

More Dirty Dozen finishes :

Without looking at past posts, I forgot where I left off – if I have posted these twice, I’m sorry. If I missed posting YOUR finish, please let me know. My mind has been occupied elsewhere as you probably know but I’m feeling better.

I am looking forward to Black Friday and Bonnie’s new mystery called Frolic. I have stopped myself from starting anything that will compete for my time because I know how many units she calls for each week – lots and lots of piecing! I want my island clear of all stuff by Friday morning when I can start cutting and sewing.

Did you see Martingale’s short video of the quilts in A Country’s Call? I put it on my Facebook page and Connie put it on our Country Threads page – for some reason I can’t get it on here for you. It was fun to see the corners of every quilt!

Tomorrow I’m going to show you those pincushions I received in the mail – I wanted this post to be special so Thanksgiving Day fills that bill. I am thankful I was the lucky recipient.

North Iowa and Southern Minnesota are pretty much closed down or slowed down today because of the rain, ice, sleet and snow combined with HIGH winds last night. Rick is in his glory moving snow with the tractor and loader. Me, you ask? I’m stuck inside but I have a good novel, a Netflix series and a Prime Video series to keep me busy as well as a couple small Christmas gifts to make. If they turn out OK, I’ll post the directions.

Are you preparing food today, cleaning house for company or sewing because you’re going to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow?

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Nothing better than the smell of the holidays especially when you don’t have to travel. May those who do travel be safe.

Mary Happy Thanksgiving to you, Rick and all your farm friends. Yes, St Paul got 9” of snow & more to come. I’m hunkered down until Saturday or Sunday. Sewing, sewing & eating too much. It will be just me and “my boys” 🐱🐱. My Henry has been keeping me busy with his bathroom issues. Not ready to say goodbye because he’s still happy so I’ll continue to do extra work.
I’m sorry for your loss of your goat Emma? I’m sure that still tugs at your heart.
Thank you Mary for all the time you spend on your blog. I always look forward to reading it & admiring your work and others. I’m keeping up “mostly” but haven’t sent pics. I found another ufo so I set aside #4 and found one I hadn’t numbered.

Mary, I am making your green bean recipe for Thanksgiving it is my new favorite vegetable recipe. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Sandra Corrigan

I love your new quilt book. I am going to allow myself to start a new quilt even though I should wait until after Christmas. I love string quilts, and I have the perfect fabric for the string quilt pattern in Country’’s Call. I have had this fabric for a few years and I was not able to decide how to use it. I will email you a picture when I get it finished.iam sorry about Emma. She was a very lucky goat to have a home with you. I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving.

I’ve been cooking for two days. Our kids are coming, one from ND, and the other from OH, and are both traveling today. I have been praying for a safe trip for both of them, especially the ND family as they have to pass by northern Iowa and southeast SD where all the snow hit. I am nearly done with advance preparations for today. This is the one time of the year that our whole family gets together, all 14 of us (plus one missing this year), and we celebrate Christmas at the same time. Happy Thanksgiving to you and Rick!

  6. Rhoda Ebersole

No snow here in NV but VERY windy which means another blizzard up north somewhere in a few days.
    Love your blog
Still sorry about Emma. Was she your last little goat?
Continue to heal and be strong again!!!

Oh wow, I just saw that book on the Naryingaje blog. I have no feed sacks but that guest matter, I don’t think there are patterns in that book, I think it’s more of a historical perspective, is that right? I would love to read it.
Today I made pumpkin pie, have the sweet potatoes cooked and in a casserole for reheating tomorrow, and tomorrow I will make two cast iron skillet corn breads. Yum! I made the cranberry relish already, yummy, I love that… it’s made with fresh cranberries and an orange and a bit of sugar….I guess I’m in the minority but I really dislike the jiggly canned stuff, looks like jello/tastes like fake to me. Yet others love it and dislike the fresh chopped version I make. That’s family…. you have to provide it all!

  8. Carla J

    Happy Thanksgiving!
Baking was done here in West Michigan yesterday. High wind warnings and dune erosion happening today that I didn’t want to lose power in the middle of pie baking. Rolls rise overnight and bake tomorrow before turkey.
No dinner guest traveling, guys will hunt in the morning, I get to sew which is my plan for the weekend. Have a few gifts to finish for Christmas.

  9. Joyce from NY

I am going to my daughters for Thanksgiving dinner. I am taking a Bonnie Hunter recipe creamed pearl onions. Very windy here today, will be colder tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

  10. Janice Hebert

Happy Thanksgiving Mary and all! Thanksgiving this year is crazy for us, we went to our daughter’s last weekend and had Thanksgiving with our grandkids and friends. It was so much fun and now it will just be my husband and I tomorrow. We decided since we already had turkey that we will have a nice roast beef for our dinner instead. We will see our youngest daughter and her husband next weekend. Like I said, Crazy! I love all of the projects shown – especially Laura P’s #4 quilt. I love a dark background on a quilt! Or a hooked rug. God bless everyone, safe travels and enjoy spending time with your family and friends. Jan in MA

Our grandsons are on their way to Minneapolis and I am worried:( I hope they are all ok!
We are going out for a buffet at 11 AM this year. We’ve never done that in almost 50 years of marriage so it should be fun. With the big eaters gone (the grandsons) and only 7 of us, we decided to try it. I am still making many favorites for the evening meal, whatever that is, so we’ll still have goodies:)
I hope you can rest and relax with the bad weather. Not much else you can do with your knees.
Would Vicki from Durham, NC share the name of her pattern for the trees over the door? Thanks. I love all of the # 4’s. This time I clicked on all the ads instead of the X’s. Not sure if that will help or hurt???

  12. Cheryl

Camping in northwest Arkansas last night we got those winds full force!! The camper rocked back and forth until 4am! Happy Thanksgiving!

  13. Beryl in Owatonna

Yes, southern MN did get snow!! About 6″ or 7″ over night and wind too. So glad it stopped, at least until Friday when more is expected. My nephew and I are going to Mpls so glad the snow has stopped. I got a message to bring boots for the first annual Mill Pond Waddle!!! It will be between dinner and pie!
Most of the cooking is done here…my SIL is super organized. The turkey has cooked, it has been carved and is in the crock pot to reheat tomorrow! She has just about everything else she is doing finished ad it will be re-heated tomorrow. It smells so good in here!! She can take it easy tomorrow, her guest all have something to bring also! I guess the table will be set before too long also. WOW!
I made the cranberry relish also only I put in an apple too. I have made it for years. I used to help my grandmother make it using the hand turn food chopper!!! Always had to put a bowl under it so the drippings wouldn’t go all over the floor! Cupboards today aren’t made for the chopper sorry to say.
I saw the Feed Sack book…it looks fun. I have a couple of feedsacks, not sure if I will ever use them. I love 30’s prints.
I am going to make a Christmas print table runner from one of your Charm Square books….Breaking Bread or something close to that!! It should be fun in Christmas prints. I have to finish a throw I have started also.
Happy Thanksgiving!! Continue to heal before you tackle the snow!

  14. Diann Smith

I am a serious lover of feedbacks. One lady in my guild GAVE me six sacks she had. She decided she didn’t have time or interest on those. I have had them over 30 years. Also bought 11 half sacks at a community sale marked ‘dust cloths’ for $1 each. Bought them all and seller laughed that my house must be dirty!🤗The Bemis Mill showed a video on feedbacks during a program on the sacks. They were 10 cents each and the ladies looking carefully and some thought price too high. I could have cleared the table in a few seconds and wished for time travel when I saw it. Some day I hope to cut them up and use mine. Serious bag love and I have slept under quilts made from the sacks but don’t have one… yet.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Diann Smith – what are you waiting for? Or do you just want to collect the feedsacks? Life is short and it sounds like you’d really enjoy making a quilt with your prized feedsacks – don’t delay too long. There’s no time like the present.

  15. Barb P

Arrived to Minnesota last nite from Idaho to spend time with family. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday…time with family. Would love a chance at the book.

  16. Launa

    Mary,
My son and husband enjoy cooking so the menu is theirs to plan for the 4 of us! I used to grind the cranberry, orange and apple relish with sugar using my grandma’s grinder screwed to the pull out cutting board! Still works great, drips n all!

Thanks for showing the finished DD pictures. Always nice to see the finishes.

Our metal roof is nearly finished. The snow was blown off and work continues.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Rick!

  17. Sue in Oregon

Yes, I saw your video and loved it. You two should be very proud of yourselves. Wonderful book!! And Martingale did a nice job of presenting it.

Today I am preparing food for a very small family Thanksgiving dinner. My husband, me and our two daughters. Most of our family live in Montana, some upstate. Just too far away and too much nasty weather to get together for Thanksgiving.

I love the old fabrics. Hope I win the book after you have enjoyed it.

The finishes are great, each and every one. Vicki’s Christmas trees are extra pretty. I have that pattern and one tree made, then put away for years. I just got it out the other day. Vicki…if you read this, I love the way you hung it.

We had a huge wind storm yesterday and were without power for 3 hours or so. I’m thankful it wasn’t longer.

  18. Ginny

I am cleaning, it’ s fall shedding time and dog hair is everywhere. I have a Bissell pet vacuum and it scrubs at the same time so I get the dog hair up and the dirty paw prints at the same time. Washing the front windows next, then out to the shop to dig through my unpacked boxes for my big roaster. For the first time on 18 years, I will have a full house for Thanksgiving. We always cooked the turkey on the grill so we will cook it on the grill again. George and Donna will share the cooking with me which will be fun. I will bake pies tonight plus an apple spice cake. I am so happy we will be celebrating together. We have been blessed here in South Carolina. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  19. Caryn Goulden

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Mary!
Clearing the decks before the start of Bonnie’s mystery sounds like a great idea. I wasn’t ready to go on her last mystery, got behind, and gave up! Hopefully this time I’ll keep up!
Winter storm warning with high winds here. So far not a lot of snow here in the valley, but Blewett Pass (Cascade Mtns, WA) is closed. Glad we are not traveling for Thanksgiving!

  20. Pat Smith

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Rick and the other readers. I so enjoy this blog to get my taste of Iowa and remember my trips to Country Threads. Love the DD finishes I’m seeing. My sewing room is having some built ins early Dec. I can’t wait to get it up and running and do some sewing. I’m in Pleasant Hill, CA after braving the long flight full of crying little ones yesterday. Our oldest daughter lives here doing heart wrenching work with youth who have spent their lives in and out of foster care. I’m proud of the efforts she and the state of CA make to help these young people. We had the west coast “bomb cyclone” last night, but it didn’t involve snow like so many experienced. Still, I was not fun! Hope everyone’s loved ones arrive safely and a great time is had by all!

  21. Deb Harrison

Happy Thanksgiving to the Etherington’s and the Tesenes!
You are asked the end of your msg what we were doing today; my answer is all of the above. Cleaning for family together after graveside service for Tim’s mother on Sat, pie baking to take to dinner, tomorrow, sewing a second dance shoes bag with pink tulle and crock potting wild rice soup for supper tonight.

  22. the other Angie

Happy Thanksgiving!! So good to hear from you – glad you are feeling a little better. I hope the cold weather doesn’t bother your knee too much. And, in answer to your questions, yes, yes, and yes!! And I should have bolded the first “yes”!! Things seem to be moving so quickly this year.
    Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

  23. Vicki in Seattle

Sending “Thanksgiving Blessings” to all of you!
The pies are finished and the make ahead mashed potatoes are in the fridge. I cut lots of green foliage and branches of berries from the yard and I arranged them with orange tulips for the centerpieces.
Now I need to dust! No time for sewing today!🍁🦃🍁

  24. Judy

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones. No snow where we are in Indiana today, but Strong winds since last night. No power since 7:00 am and overcast skies mean little light from outside. The list of cleaning and preparing for tomorrow is not getting done today. The latest update has power returning soon after midnight. Good enough to cook the main part of the meal in the morning. I’m canceling homemade rolls and deviled eggs. Did we really need them? I am thankful that we do not have any snow to be drifting with all of this wind.

  25. Jan B

Closed 6 ads. Not sure if we’re supposed to close ads anymore but I did anyway.
I’m with you on the feedsacks. I saw the Martingale post but I didn’t bother to enter to win a copy of the new book. I went thru my 30’s fabric phase about 15 years ago. I’m not really drawn to them anymore. However, I do LOVE Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Vintage 1 & 2 quilts along with the FGV Christmas quilt. I’ve made FGV #1 but it’s not quilted. FGV #2 & FGV Christmas are still waiting.

Happy Thanksgiving to you & Rick & all your animals. Stay safe! Stay inside! Stay warm! Hugs! (())
I didn’t know you had your own FB page. I’ll be looking for it.

  26. Martha Engstler Gettysburg

Blessings to all for a safe Thanksgiving. Sounds like the weather all over the country isn’t helping the traveler, be safe.

  27. Judith Ann Jaques

Glad your are healing ok. Sorry for your loss. I am about 2 hours south of you east side of interstate 35 at boondock exist. We didn’t get much snow. My thanksgiving will be quiet. I am going to put cube steak in the crock pot ,will have mashed potatoes, dressing and cranberry salad, a feast. It will be the first holiday alone. Feels strange. If I get up with ambition I am going to whitewash the bricks on my fireplace. I have a bit of hand work to do. A binding to finish.(favorite thing in quilt making) and some hexies to make. Blessings to you all and Happy Thanksgiving Judith Ann

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Judith – I’ve never been too sorry to be alone on Thanksgiving – hope you can enjoy your handwork!

  28. Donna Sproston

Linzee McCray lives in Iowa City. She gave a presentation on feed sacks to our guild in Illinois soon after her first line of Feed Sack prints came out. Being a city kid, I had always thought feed sacks and flour sacks were the same, and holding those fabrics was an eye opener. It would have been torture to wear those scratchy fabrics!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  29. Diane Bauer

Greetings from snowy Minnesota—I waved as I went past your exit on Monday night. I left Colorado at 6:45 with every intention of stopping in York, NE (my halfway point) on Monday evening. I arrived by about 2:30 and they were predicted to get 8” of snow by Tuesday morning, so I got right back in the car and drove the remainder of the way to Rochester on dry roads. I didn’t want to get stuck in York! I cleared about 8” of snow off of four cars this morning (my Mom’s, my sisters, mine, and a friend of my Mom’s). Then we went to Mom’s church to put together bulletins for tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. Mom was a church secretary as I was growing up, so that’s a job I’ve been helping with for an awful lot of years!! My niece will arrive from Minneapolis tonight and we will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving feast tomorrow. I will also be watching the Macy’s parade as I have a friend who is a handler on one of the balloons—Paw Patrol this year!
My Dirty Dozen hasn’t posted on the blog yet—think o emailed it to you late last week. I’m amazed someone has already finished 2 Uncle Santas!!! I just got my pattern so will be busy when I return to Colorado!!

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Diane Bauer – she finished four – 4!- Uncle Santa’s! Tell me what your project was, Diane – I obviously missed it.

      1. Diane Bauer

One each for my two kids, my two nieces, my Mom, my sister, and two for me!! My new machine has the blanket stitch I have been coveting for 30 years, so I am all about utilizing it! I so love making things for the people I love, and these smaller projects are fun ways to do it! I gave one to one of my nieces this afternoon and her reaction was priceless!!

        1. CountryThreads Post author

Diane Bauer – isn’t it just the most fun to surprise someone with something you made? Most of my relatives are tired of it all – better find some new recipients!

          1. Diane Bauer

Yes!! I love it!!! My Mom is so appreciative always! Just in the last year I have done cute zip pouches for my sister, Mom, and nieces, and now the snowmen. Next spring they will all get Harveys (started last year, just waiting to be the Dirty Dozen pick of the month now!)!

My Mom’s blood pressure is through the roof so we are taking her in to Mayo shortly. Prayers appreciated!! I’m so glad we are all home. She is so busy caring for my Dad that she forgets to take care of herself.

          2. CountryThreads Post author

Diane – what number are your Harvey’s? I could make that the next number, if you’d like. Will you take your mom to Mayo while you’re home?

  30. Nikki M in Tx

All the #4’s are wonderful! I am drawn to the scrappy one that looks like bee hives to me that Laura P made, Laura if you read this can you tell me the pattern name.

Celebrating at sons house & am there helping with prep so no sewing until weekend when I get home. Starting last night & most of today have done as much prep work ahead of time as possible. Last night baked pumpkin pie, the new recipe on Libby pumpkin label.. it is so good.. now my go to pumpkin pie recipe! Made jalapeño cranberry relish ( I do live in Texas after all). Have dressing veggies diced & ready to go. Pea Salad & Pink Stuff made..both best made a day in advance. Eggs boiled, peeled & in airtight container in fridge, will fix the deviled part tomorrow. Turkey thawed & ready for smoker in morning, dressing will be assembled & cooked tomorrow, along with potatoes & gravy. Dressing goes in crockpot& is moist & so good ( NO it is not cornbread dressing..I may live in Texas & claim Texas but not raised here…) , pot of greens will go on stove early tomorrow also, Mary’s corn recipe is on menu also…still had some of Iowa corn in freezer that I cooked by Mary’s recipe & son requested it.
Sorry to be rambling, Happy Thanksgiving Mary & Rick, & all the blog readers.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Nikki M – I loved all the details of your preparations for your dinner tomorrow! It all sounds delicious! I really don’t like pumpkin pie, believe it or not, so I’m hoping they’ve got some other kinds at church tomorrow. And I’m pleasantly surprised that my sweet corn is on your menu- your son has good taste!

    2. Diane Bauer

Mary, I’ll have to check on my Harvey’s for January—my list is at home in Colorado.
I took Mom to Mayo on Friday—she was able to get in with her regular physician. He put her on a blood pressure medication and asked her to continue monitoring and then check back with him. She took a dose on Friday night and there was already an improvement by yesterday. This morning she is back up again, though not as high as last week. She had been up getting ready for church already so we will encourage her to take it again this afternoon when she is more relaxed. She seems calmer since she took the step to see the doctor. Thanks for asking about her!

  31. Sharon Lowy

I have been cooking most of the day and my furnace is acting up..repairman can’t come until Tuesday.

    Still no ads to delete!

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.💕

  32. Debra Miller

My husband won’t be home from Texas until late tomorrow evening and the kids and grandkids all have other plans so I will be sewing tomorrow and when he gets home, I think we are going to the Chinese buffet-no cooking at all! Love all the finished number 4’s but Laura P.’s really interests me-would love to know name of pattern.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Debra Miller – I hope Laura P sees your question. Nothing wrong with spending the day sewing!

  33. Kathy Hanson

Happy Thanksgiving, tomorrow, to you and Rick and your whole family. Ours are working or have other plans so we are going to Jerry’s Lutheran Church where they have a Thanksgiving Dinner every year. I will take a couple of pumpkin pies and a large green bean casserole to help out. Nice way to spend the day with others. Everyone is welcome at the church so I hope there are folks that really need a place to be on the holiday and we can share it with them.
I have never looked into Bonnie Hunt’s yearly sew-alongs but should give it a try this year. You seem to enjoy it. We got about 6 inches of wet, heavy snow but the weather will be fairly warm so much of it may melt. We will be going to the home of the women who have our llamas at their farm on Saturday so we look forward to that.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Kathy Hanson – let me know about your girls! We’re going to our church, too, since we are hosting the community meal. It will be fun!

  34. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts.

Hello Mary, Happy Thanksgiving to you and Rick. Stay safe and warm in all that ice and snow!
I had a day off today, so I was ironing and cleaning and cooking. We are having a few American friends over for dinner tomorrow, so have a thanksgiving menu with turkey and sweet potato and cranberries and pumpkin pie etc. etc. A little taste of home when they are so far away from their families on the holiday. Very wet and windy here, but no snow yet.

  35. Tanya in Houston

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I give thanks for family coming for lunch, food enough for all of them, that we all live within thirty miles of each other and won’t have to travel, and for the woman in my guild who quilts and just finished up my Bull’s Eye and others I had taken her! Now to enjoy tomorrow and then get to binding in time for Christmas!

Some of you may have seen the wonderful last second win of Stephen F. Austin over Duke in college basketball last night. SFA is a smallish East Texas college and the student who made the winning shot is from the Bahamas. His family had lost everything in storms and his father, a pastor, had a church that was devastated. Thanksgiving indeed that they are alive and that young man has something great to celebrate on a national sport scene.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Tanya in Houston – we saw the report on the news about Duke getting beat on their home floor by SF Austin ranked 264th or something bizarre. That Go. Fund Me page for his family reached over $80,000 today! What a wonderful story!

  36. Miriam

    Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh, the Feed Sacks book brought back memories of Grandma, her chickens and her glorious feedbacks! She made me dresses and pillowcases from them! I had such fun picking “my” new dress from the stash. I loved them then, and I love them and 30s fmreproductions now. if I don’t win. thank you for a beautiful trip down Memory Lane remembering my sweet little Grandma!

  37. Anita Fetzer

Just finished a great book…..The Dutch House also The Winemakers Wife was excellent with a really .surprisin ending

  38. Gloria B.

God bless you, your family (furry ones included) and all who follow you this day I’d thanks. You bring us joy with each post. We attempted a remake of wizard of oz with the wind today. Fortunately, I’m inside cooking and baking for tomorrow. Taking a dinner and blog break.

  39. jan VanDeWalle

Making pumpkin pies, Deviled eggs and the dressing.. I wasn’t going to make deviled eggs as I didn’t have enough eggs when I told my son he told his kids and one of them popped up here last night with a dozen eggs. The grandkids love my deviled eggs can you tell. Dinner is at their house so only 7 miles from home
We had high winds last night but is dry today so far, Oregon is getting hit with snow but not in our area..
I have a box of old turkey feed sacks but never cared for the colors so should pass them on to someone who likes the thirties prints or conserves old quilts.
Happy Thanksgiving to all and wish for safe driving if you are traveling this week.
    Jan in Oregon

  40. Barb K

Going to my Brother’s home for Thanksgiving– (0ur kids and families all out of town). Only 30 miles out in the country so hoping weather is o.k. I made two cherry pies and one pumpkin to take. Turned out o.k. (I cheated and used refrigerated crusts). Not as good as my Mom’s used to be–she was a champion pie baker, crusts and all ! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

  41. Beverly Lockmiller

Happy Thanksgiving to all there. we are supposed to get snow here tonight in N. M. Got my free book last week loved it thanks so much,

  42. Sharon in Oswego, Il

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am sewing a small red and white quilt for guess who? Me, for a change! I still have to order the Santa from you, too. Very windy here. Take care of yourself, Mary.

  43. Margie from ohio

Happy thanksgiving to everyone. My mother in law had to move to a semi private room at the nursing home today due to her 100 days being over and Medicare will no longer pay anything. It will now come out of her pocket. Anyone who has ever been to a nursing home knows there is no room so we did a little moving and did the best we could. She is not sure she is going to like it. Since she is not making progress in rehabilitation, she is wheelchair bound. So it has been an interesting day. Will visit her tomorrow after lunch.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Margie – I know exactly the spot you’re in because my mom went after a stroke and she learned to accept it and at least act like she liked it. She had cash rent from a farm or else she would not have had money to pay the steep rent. She was also in a wheelchair.

  44. Sherry Whalen

Happy Thanksgiving Mary and Rick! We will be traveling to Forest City to go to Majorpa again, we did that last year and it was a great space for us, as there will be between 35 and 40 people. I am making mashed potatoes, dressing and sugared cranberries. We got about 5 inches of snow and our streets are quite icy right now so we must have gotten some rain too. Our walk this morning was an adventure. And oh my, the wind!!

I didn’t see my #4 or #7…..I sent pics in the same email on the 16th – also not life changing if they don’t get posted lol.

I too am trying to clear the deck to get ready for the mystery!!! I love the colors, are you changing colors or using Bonnie’s suggestions? I love (and have) the colors, so those are the ones I am using. I also have been making some of Bonnie’s Court House step blocks. They are pretty fun, I’ve been making them in batches of 10 and they use lots of random scraps that don’t need to be cut into correct sizes. It is also a good project to be able to set aside to make mystery quilts. After I get done here – time to fill bobbins, clean and oil machines and change my needles!!

Keep resting and healing, that’s the most important thing!!

  45. Nancy Tiede

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Visiting our daughter and husband in Ohio. We will celebrate Thanksgiving ,Christmas, and two birthdays. Had fun visiting quilt shops and an antique mall. Today we had high winds and rain. No snow here. So sounds like we have 8 inches of snow in MN. Not looking forward to that.

  46. Sunflower from Michigan

Mary, Happy Thanksgiving! Very windy and rainy in southeast Michigan today. Preparing for a late holiday dinner tomorrow with our son and daughter. No turkey though as we’re having a family dinner Friday with my husbands family. We had a big feast last Sunday with my family and it was a wonderful meal.
Since I finished mt #4, I’m thinking of making a small quilt for each of my daughters dogs for Christmas, inspired by Eddy’s story and quilt. They love to have quilts on their dog beds. I’m very thankful for this blog and wish everyone reading a very wonderful Thanksgiving.

When I was in grade school over 50 years ago, My Grandmother would make our dresses from feed sacks that we picked out from the feed store. For awhile we would also get printed flour sacks in 25 pound bags. Mom would make homemade bread for our family of ten so we went through many bags of flour. It would be fun looking through patterns of feed sack quilts.

Mary, Best wishes on your Thanksgiving outing tomorrow at church meal. I’m sure they will be happy to see you and your progress. I remember those feed sacks from my farm days. (and later wearing a dress my mother would sew for me) I still like the 30’ts prints In something’s. Happy Day also to Connie. Thank-you both for all you share and extra effort with the blog…

Mary, I was so sorry to hear about a Emma. We’d grow very attached to her and she’ll be missed. I know she was greatly loved and how fortunate for her that she had you.
The house is decorated for Christmas! So happy to get that “chore” out of the way. Our Charlotte son, Jon, is coming tomorrow to have Thanksgiving dinner out w us. Friday-Sunday our Asheville daughter and family will be here and we’ll enjoy a Texas smoked turkey I ordered w all the trimmings. It’s a lovely time of year to spend together.
We have perfect temperatures right now. 60s in day and 40s at night. We aren’t envious of your cold, snowy weather, but it might be conducive to sewing all day long!
Blessings to you, Rick and all those animals that you care for so lovingly.
    Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🐶🐶🐶🐾🐾🐾🐈🐈🐈✂️✂️✂️🧵🧵🧵

I love feedsacks! I was introduced to them at my first auction in Ohio. What an eye opening experience that all was-I made several quilts from my collection and shared pieces with friends. Have a lifetime supply but always looking for more, they are so happy! Would love to learn more about them.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.
We are going to my brother’s and SIL’s for the big day. They live 2 miles from us. He was in his shed, standing on round bales stacked two high, fixing a rafter in the shed. He fell down and broke his pelvis. He has “plates and screws” holding him together. He fell about 8 feet. He is now in a wheel chair–hopes to get to a walker soon. There will be 9 of us for the dinner. My contribution is the pumpkin pie. (Thank you to Trader Joe’s for the wonderful crust they make; you cannot tell it from “homemade” crust. I buy it in Mpls. because there is no TJ around here. It is frozen and you just unroll it.) Mpls. is 180 miles from here. My daughter is making the green bean casserole, using my canned green beans. No school here today, because of the snow and wind. I also have to bring “real whipped cream” since we live on a dairy farm. We hope to go to the attic to get the wonderful Christmas decorations later in the day. I can’t wait.

I love feed sack quilts!! My mother made me a doll quilt from feed sacks when I was a child and my mother-in-law gave me a coverlet made from feed sacks in the dresden pattern. I don’t have any old feed sacks but I sure love them.
Very quiet Thanksgiving for us. I do enjoy your blog and wish you a speedy recovery and a Happy Thanksgiving,
    Sue

Blessings to you Mary for keeping us with us on your blog. I love that your church is hosting the community dinner…it is so humbling to open your doors to those who need a meal and company. When my wonderful grandmother was alive and I was younger there was always a new person at our table that she would invite to eat dinner with us. The pearl onions mentioned was always on her table too! We go to our daughters house and all contribute foods to help lighten the load. I make mashed potatoes while watching the Macy’s parade and put them in the crock pot. My husband made the cranberry relish last night grinding the oranges, apples and cranberries. I inherited a feed sake quilt that my husbands great grandma made, hand quilted it in 1976 and it’s fragile, but I never took the time to learn about the fabrics. I just admired it but I think I should get that book to become knowledgeable. We take buying fabric from stores for granted but from what I heard from family they took these sacks apart just to have pieces of fabric. Continue healing Mary as you mean a lot to all of us and yeah thanks for the winds that made it all the way to New York last night but we didn’t get the snow.

I will be making some cookies later today but bought a pie, not good at that. Just our son for dinner today. My husband always cooks the turkey. I personally love feed sacks and have several. Never dared to cut them up though….. That book looks VERY interesting.
