BULLSEYE #4, 9-29-26

We will now start cutting circles. I have always maintained that these circles be cut freehand to match the freedom of the quilt but I see many bullseye quilts with circles cut with a template so that they match. This will only make it hard to press all those layers but it’s your quilt so it’s up to you. I am not the quilt police but I am the designer and having those circles match does not impress me.

Gather your 8” squares.

Fold each square in quarters.

Cut a quarter circle freehand.

I have cut soooooo many of these my circles are pretty good. Ha! But they don’t have to be. These freehand circles are the reason your 8” squares didnt have to be perfect.

Trust me – this one will work just fine. But if it bothers you and you hate it, trim it.

I’m going to save these and use them in some type of scrap improv project but we won’t need them in Bullseye so throw them away if you choose.

A picture’s worth a thousand words

*****************

I’m sure you remember Esther Lahodny in Kansas who we sent cards to awhile back. She was 96 years old and passed away last Sunday. Her family found the cards in her room where she had saved them and reread them. Thank you, Readers, for sending your cards.

And thank you for your positive comments about my little Mortie Snortie! Haha! She’s a fun companion that’s for sure. Today was her Gotcha Day and as I walked back to the house from the barn this morning after chores, I relived that moment when I first saw her.

Deano’s malignant tumor on the side of his mouth is unchanged – he acts completely normal and you’d never know there was anything wrong until you saw the left side of his mouth. I don’t know how this will play out but for now we’re hanging in there as is.

And then there’s Millie who can’t/wont eat. I’ve tried everything I can think of from baby food, every kind of canned cat food, eggs – ugh. Nothing tempt her.

So that’s the health update around here. Hazel was acting different a few days ago – didn’t want her treats! WHAT? She must be sick, right? But tonight she acts fine.

So glad the Fever won tonight – Sunday’s game was embarrassing.

Raining here again.

I happened to be on Pinterest this afternoon and saw your Wild Turkey pattern made up. If you ever decide to offer that for sale again, I will be your first customer. This is a great time of year to make that lovely designed wall-hanging. Thanks for so many, many years of great patterns.

Mary – sure,go ahead and send $5 for Wild Turkey – I’ll post it in the meantime.

Did you know that lilies, both Asian and Day, are deadly to cats? I found out the hard way. They not only cause kidney failure, but make ulcers in their throat so they can’t eat. I hope Millie didn’t eat a lily, or even lick the pollen from her fur.

Shirley – I’m trying to think if I even have any lilies – I don’t think I do. But she now comes to ME for something to eat – the chicken baby food must be making her feel better.

My last cat, Harvey (the Horrible) looked like Mortie. We haven’t had one for 7 years and hubby Bill wants another but not interested in cleaning the litter box. So I gave him a stuffed kitten. We have had lots of adventures and laughs with that kitten.
I’ll trim the corners off those scraps for triangles and use them to make wonky stars. Jo Kramer has a great pattern in her book “Country Quilts Modern” she named “Thank You” because she has so many triangles given to her. I’ve made two of these quilts.

The Bullseye quilt is on my mind because I am dreaming about it. Planning fabrics is on my mind because that’s what I was thinking about when I got up a couple of times in the night.

I was thinking light and neutrals. I always wanted to make a neutral quilt but that colorful Bullseye in the email the other day is so beautiful and eye catching, I might go that way. Maybe I’ll make 2 quilts!

I should have my November door hangers tops done today and hopefully will have them and the October door hangers quilted in a few days so I can join the Bullseye fun!

Sheryl – this will be so easy to join in because I have given only one small step a week – join at your own pace!

Yes, more rain here, I am at retreat and don’t mind at all!

We stayed in yesterday. Lots of sewing happening. We played Mexican Train last night and two stayed up to midnight sewing after that. This morning I am the only one up! I like my morning catch up with the outside world.

    Bullseye looks like fun!

I too have a sick cat. Her name is Ella. She has a tumor in her left ear canal which has effected her left eye and that side of her mouth. Been giving her steroids but she keeps eating less each day. I so get what you are going though. Each time something like this happens I tell my husband no more cats it just upsets me so much but the next stray that shows up at the farm I claim it. Spend hundreds of dollar at the vet between shots and spay/neuter. I guess I will never learn. They become my cat friends. I will pray for your cats at their health issues. Thanks for listening Mary. I know you understand.

Sandra – I understand perfectly! I feel so bad for Millie – she ate pretty good this morning – a full jar of baby food! And, like you, I will never turn away a cat that shows up here (local people – this is not an open invitation) because what will happen to them? They are like my children to a degree and I would never desert them. Thank YOU for doing the same! The money doesn’t become my first concern.

    Thanks for all the updates.
Thank you, too the next step in the Bullseye quilt. I think I might sneak one in after all.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Erin – haha! Good for you! The steps are very definite and you won’t get lost. It’s very easy and nothing needs to match until you join blocks together. 😊

After I get everything settled after being gone I’m going to start on my bullseye. I have an idea of what I want to do (sometimes that’s good, sometimes not so much). I’m a bit ocd, so the freehand cutting …… I’m going to do it! Get me out of my “comfort zone.” 😂😂. I’ve got some fabrics pulled from my room…. that’s what I need to do and use up some of this fabric I have.

I love all the animals. Mortie has a warm spot — years ago my favorite cat was an orange one named Gus. He was such a Gus! Miss him very much,

I’ve started pulling out all the fall decor. I saw so many beautiful decorations on my trip and it’s inspired me to decorate! I think we have rain heading our way — which we really need so I’m going to get on the outdoor decor this morning. Mary, I think the keeping busy keeps us young. At least that’s what I tell myself. ha

Lynette – I agree! I do not want to sit in my chair till I die. I know two people who won’t do anything because they’re afraid of getting hurt. Good grief!

      1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, if you keep moving & not sit in a chair it helps physically to keep you strong. I can’t imagine sitting around all the time & not being busy! I’m happiest when I’m busy😊 I’m cutting circles today. This is such a fun quilt! Thanks so much for organizing the quilt along!!

      2. Lynette

The last 10 years of her life all my dear mom did was sit in a chair. I do not want to do that!!!! I do some what my friends call crazy stuff but I’m like you and I’m not going to live in fear! No guts no glory!!! I’ve dealt with some AC issues last summer and this. I have a great HVAC guy (very small company) and I told him a was contemplating going to trade school to learn HVAC….. he laughed but I was only half kidding. Wish I had asked my dad to teach me more plumbing. At least he taught me how to hang wallpaper and wire in light fixtures. I’m single so I have no one the do the “honey do” list. I do what I can and I have a great handyman that I call when I can’t.

I don’t know how you do it, dealing with all those sweet animals, mowing, cleaning etc…you make me tired!
I can’t wait until tomorrow when I get to start cutting my circles.
