This farm pond was dug many years ago as just a play puddle for the geese and it’s time to get rid of it. Not many people would have agreed to step into this swamp to pull up the liner but Casey did. Yay for Casey!

Now the muck will go down and we’ll plan on filling it in. If we don’t get another thing accomplished this summer, I’ll be happy we did this.
We’re smack dab in the middle of perfect corn growing weather – hot and humid! At one point today I felt like I was hot clear to my center core. Ugh. And get a look at Tim’s corn!!!

Dean round baled the hay yesterday – the dogs love the open field!

I’m going to show you the fabrics that Connie bought yesterday. I have all mine photographed with selvages so you can see the fabric company. I’ll save those for tomorrow.
We certainly helped their day’s receipts – haha!!!

Now doesn’t that look like a pile of fun?
We talked about some things we bought last year and one was a panel I quilted for the porch table but where is it now? Sigh. I need to organize all the quilts so I can find them.
Sunflower in Michigan sent these fun pics:

For those readers who commented about Hoyas, I have many because they’re so easy to start. Here’s a couple different Hoyas in my collection:

And Connie brought me these starts yesterday:

Holy Cow! This turned into a novel! More tomorrow.

Marlene – I try not to think of winter because it spoils my beautiful summer days. Winter is why I hate fall.
Mary, what a great picture of you and Tim’s field of corn!
Will pray that the wind and hail will stay away.
Glad you had help with the pond project.
Hope you have time to play with your new fabrics.
Glad you got to spend time with Connie.💜
That shopping trip looked like so much fun. I can’t wait to see the finished products. Mortie & the look alike salt shakers are too cute. I’m glad the pond is getting filled in. I remember the very scary incident of Hazel & the raccoon. Keeper to the rescue!
I’m not sure I’ve ever been so scared as that incident with the half frozen pond, Hazel, the raccoon and thankfully Keeper! You have a good memory, Des!!!
will removing the pond effect your house insurance? Since there will not be a water source nearby incase of fire.
Oh, you don’t understand – the pond could not provide water in case of a fire. Thats what the fire engines are for. The farm pond is not close to the house and who would want to use that slimy water? And how would I get that water to the house which is on fire?
Barb and Connie did well on their selections. I’m looking forward to seeing yours tomorrow, Mary. The table topper underneath Mortie has such a pretty blend of subtle colors.
Watching Mortie grow took me back to high school when I walked home with a friend who had a feral pregnant cat land in their yard. She gave birth to several kittens and I was privileged to see the development of these little ones over the next weeks on my way home from school.
Keep wearing those masks. So many of you are in the wind current from those fires. Are you getting ash along with the compromised air?
Mary, I’m glad you are removing the pond. It served its purpose, and now you’ll create a new vision for that area – lots of curious animal residents will be interested in what happens, too! 🙂
I miss Joann Fabrics. I don’t know where the closest Quilt Shop is in my area. During Covid some closed down.
With my not driving I do a lot of online shopping. But visiting a Quilt Shop can’t be beat! Glad you and Connie had fun!
The Mortie salt shakers are too cute.
Hope filling in your pond will help cut down on mosquitos.
I have a back porch and sit out in the evenings and never have mosquitos bothering me. Weird huh?
I have skunk damage in my lawn. We had a lot of rain last week or so and the lawn is now filled with shallow holes. I haven’t paid for GrubX to be put on my lawn and this is the result.(I don’t want to attract the skunks to my lawn!) I don’t have any area that I think the skunks could shelter, but next door they have a shed close to my property line.
Air quality is bad here right now. Decided not to have my brother take me shopping. 305- hazardous.
Once again glad for my air conditioning and my home. I always say I’m blessed.
God bless you’all and stay safe.
Loved the novel this morning. So many interesting things.
Makes me want to go shopping at a quilt store seeing those purchases. But not happening! I am working on the long arm. The quilt is being custom quilted which I don’t do much of any more. I can only do so much a day and I don’t have robotics.
I am glad the DC pool did not get filled in but I think you are being smart with your pool. It’s just a breeding ground.
I’m working on a Lori Holt Christmas quilt, the one with the station wagons and a tree on the roof. A fun thing to do since it’s too hot to be outside! I just finished reading The Divorce by Freida McFadden, I couldn’t put it down. If you’ve read any of her books you know what I mean! I went to two quilters quilt sale this week, I got 5 quilt kits, some yardage fabric at 25 cents/inch. Absolutely didn’t need a thing, but the price couldn’t be beat! Everyone stay cool!
Twyla – I think I’ve read all her books and generally like them. My book right now is soooooo slow but it’s a hardcover thst I bought so I have to finish it. I know thst Lori Holt quilt and love it. I have to mow today!!!!!
The temperature is more tolerable and it’s not as humid as it has been but you can enjoy it for the Canadian smoke that has blanketed our area. I was surprised to see a lot of people wearing the N95 masks again when I went to an appointment to have some recall work done on my car then to the farm store to buy some of your fly traps and barn spray because the flies are driving me crazy. The smoke burned my eyes terribly, especially my right eye injury from my last bout of Bell’s palsy. My eye burned and ached and even the drops the eye doctor prescribed wouldn’t relieve it. It feels better this morning but I haven’t been to the barn as yet. And I need to change the furnace filter since the air conditioner is running, even with the house closed up tight the air conditioner is bringing in the smoke smell which cannot be avoided, but I want to try my best to keep the particulates out. I feel sorry for the wildlife, especially the tiny fawn twins we have on the farm, I would think it would be frightening to them.
Stay cool and safe all – blessings!
I looked at the picture of Mortie on the quilt laying beside two trays. The trays look like what I have sitting on my kitchen counter. I am going through my cupboards, getting rid of things – kind of like Swedish death cleaning. I take pictures of a few items and send to my sons, to see if they are interested. I have been surprised by one son’s choice. He loved some items – even if they were “girly” (his words). He said he is interested in much of my mother’s dishware as it is so well made. So, now I am filling a few boxes for him. He may be surprised what we bring him the next time we visit. Laugh.
Vicki – I just hate to take my stuff to the thrift store – I still love it all!
My stuff is beautiful, but not used. So, I decided I would save family from having to eventually deal with it. I will take a bunch to the Salvation Army. Now that I have started with cupboards, I realize I need to go through closets again. I last did a real “go-through” in 2018. I haven’t really bought much more, but I know there are now things I could get rid of. The heart strings won’t pull.
I know what you mean about loving all your stuff. I do too but don’t have the room to keep it all on display like you do. And so I hired someone to conduct a “downsizing sale” for me this weekend! It started today and will be half price on most items on Sunday. I spent all week pulling stuff out of boxes, cupboards and drawers and she priced it, arranged it, etc. and is running the sale. I don’t even have to be there! I figure if I haven’t looked at it or used it, it’s time to let it go. And I hate the idea of just donating it as you said. It was fun remembering things as I pulled them out and when/where I got them. So far, it hasn’t been too sad to see things go.
Tina – I don’t think there’s anybody around here who handles a sale like that but how wonderful!!! I know I’d price everything too high just because it was special only to me and it probably was just another piece of junk I collected.
What a haul! It’s so hard to pass up new fabric, no matter how much we already have. It’s a paradox; I want to use up my fabric and give away lots of quilts (and have room in my sewing room!), but I would be sad to have an empty room.
I love a good novel. Thanks, Mary.
Sunflower…. I grew up in Rochester! Loved your Lake Orion pictures!
– Suzanne in Michigan
That’s so fun! We moved here 4 yrs ago after 35 years in Rochester Hills. 🌻
Rochester Hills, really??? That’s so neat! When I was a kid, we lived near the corner of Walton and Adams. When I went away to college, my parents moved to a wonderful old farmhouse on Hamlin Road, between Rochester and Livernois Roads. They lived there for 20 some years until moving way up north at retirement. Bet you’d recognize it. ~ Suzanne in Michigan
Suzanne,
I know i would recognize it!! I lived behind the Hamlin School. I did a lot of walking along Hamlin and Livernois Rds. What a small world!!
Our son moved to LO after college and we did too, ten yrs later, after we retired. We love it here. 🌻
Can’t wait to see what Connie makes with those great fabrics! Looks like fun!
Is the hay part of your property
Dee – yes, there’s 2 acres of hay ground – my farmer gives me as much hay as I want, which isn’t much, and he gets the rest in return for baling it.
Curios how many acres to your property. I’m glad you have the hay field.
Carolyn – I have about 9 acres – 2 in hay ground.
Connie’s crow fabric is amazing! Crows are such smart, beautiful and obnoxious (!) birds. Hopefully she’ll share what she makes with it. It’s cooled off significantly since this afternoon when it was almost 100° and very humid. Ugh! Our small group will be sewing charity quilts tomorrow. It’s always fun to get together. How long will it take for your pond to be all dried up? I remember your saying you were afraid the goats would get stuck in it. It seems like we’re surrounded by fires. It’s very smoky and difficult to see very far because of it. I just pray they can get them under control and everyone stays safe.
Tina – I’m not sure how long it will take but they will
Also eat the young trees that are growing around the pond so what now?
Oh, what a fun day you and Connie had! Am glad that she didn’t move so far away as to not be able to visit.
Good to hear that you and Rick are feeling better as well. this getting older is hard work and “It Ian”t for sissies”! Take care. I love to hear all that you do and love to send cards to people.
Wow the corn is so tall. My corn in the garden is about three feet tall thought I bought some corn grown about an hour from our place and it was so good. We’ve been eating zucchini, tons of peas, radishes, lettuce, Swiss chard, beet greens and today had our first beans. I planted way too many beans and am hoping the neighbours like them. I planted radishes 4 times this year. We’ve finished the first two plantings and now the third will be ready in a few days.
Getting your pond liner taken out is a huge job. It will be so nice when it is filled in.
It will be interesting to see what Connie does with the crow fabric. The haul you two bought is great. Makes me want to go shopping and I don’t need to that’s for sure.
Big job to get the pond done this summer but you’re on your way. Will be nice when it’s all filled in and green grass.
Love those Mortie salt and pepper shakers. So cute.
Corn is ready here now!! So yummy.
Wow Casey! What a trooper getting into the pond! That’s a big job that I’m sure you will be happy to see finished. I can’t get over how high the Iowa corn is. I’m in central Maine right now and the corn I’ve been seeing looks to be about waist high. I love to see the purchases that you and Connie have made. I hope Connie will share her crow project with us. I haven’t been to a quilt shop in a while. I hope they don’t go out of business because of my absence! Ha ha!
