Frigid Continued, 1-17-26

Wind chill right now is around 20 below. Dogs had to pee before bed and they didn’t waste any time doing it. haha!

The ballgames were one big disappointment all day long. There was a ground blizzard most of the day – from my chair most of the time I couldn’t see the highway or the grove 1/2 mile away.

I was concerned about church tomorrow but the wind has died down now so I’m planning on it. We’re supposed to get another round of snow and wind starting tomorrow afternoon.

I’ve worked on the calendar quilt all day long – since I assigned it #12 I’ve got two weeks left to finish.

I’m working on the cat pictures – I got no news to talk about tonight. Just the frigid weather!!

Next December I’m going to ask for nativities because I love them so much.. Sunflower sent this one – she just got home from a trip.

Spent the day watching the Playoff football games and working on Project #12 which is a quilt based on the Kanas City Football team. Feel so bad for my Buffalo Bills. That last intersection call was wrong. Our Bill had it so we got screwed by the call. There was NO reason not to review it and call it correctly. I believe we would have kicked a field goal and won. Makes you wonder why the officials refused to do that. Josh Allen gave it his all as usual. I wonder if any fans showed up at the airport to greet the team like they usually do. My brother said it was snowing there and it would have been around 5-6 am Sunday.

Barbara – I was so sad to hear Josh being interviewed and he was in tears. I know what call you’re referring to – yes, you would have won.

Mary, Buffalo is a true football town. We call ourselves The Buffalo Mafia. The loyal fans deserved that win and Josh really tried to give it to them. I think some changes will now be in the air. Different coach? Josh moving on to another team? This will be interesting in the next few months for sure.

I love the farm animals quilt. Did you draw the pictures or were they from a fabric panel. Either was it is very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Marie and Mary, It appears the fabric used for the farm animal quilt came from a Moda panel: Farmstead Panel 20908 Porcelain – Moda Fabrics – Animals Farm Pig Chicken Geese Cow – Quilting Cotton Fabric. I found it on Etsy. Janice

Yes,it was a simple panel, with dotted lines between animals, about 11″ apart, by QT fabrics. Starched flat to square up at 10 1/2″. Used strips to finish at 3″ for a 42 inch square top for my church group as a charity quilt. Thanks for the comments!

Stay cozy and warm as you can! We are slipping into a stretch of cold days in Michigan, but likely not close to what you are experiencing. Be safe driving to and from church! We did not go out this morning – lots of snow accumulation and our little snow blower cannot clear our driveway. Love that nativity picture! I have a very old set that was my mother’s, so I’ll try to remember to dress it up special next Christmas to send a picture.

Our temps are in the teens this morning but, below zero temperatures predicted for the coming week. I just got back from taking down the church outdoor Nativity. Thought it best to get it done early before church goers arrive and before it gets any colder. We have had plenty of snow here already and winter just started. Snowmobiles are loving it.
I’m hoping to work on a quilt today that I’ve had ongoing for a while. I had run short on a key fabric of the quilt and, finally was able to get more to finish it. Now I have no excuse.

Connie – you got the job of taking down the nativity, huh? Cross that off your list. On to sewing,

We had low single digits of temps 2 days. 3 last night when I went to bed. I went to bed early as I came home early after 4 days at a retreat at a friend’s home. I was out on Friday but not very long as we had snow showers and high winds. More wind today but very little snow in SW Iowa. I love hearing about the weather everywhere.

    Photos make me smile!

Fran – I love the weather reports, too. Do you get lots done at the retreats you attend? I would chat too much and go home with nothing completed.

Feel bad this morning for the Bills but next year could have some good luck charms for them – a new stadium and Josh becomes a daddy. And today all the licensed merchandise will be on sale in the stores. My husband gave up on the second game and came to bed while I was reading “ The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell”. A principal lent me her copy as she had done a book review for a teachers group on it.
I have a Christmas theme to finish in 2 weeks so that’s my afternoon as we’ve got soup galore. Might be time for a review of some of our favorite recipes to get us through the cold days.

Kathy – Josh was in tears at the news conference – I felt so bad for him!

When I was a kid in the 1950’s and raised in south western North Dakota, we had temps at -20 or -30F without the windchill. It was a very small town of abt 700 residents and people would leave their cars running while they picked up their mail at the post office (no in-town delivery) or did any shopping at the grocery store, drug store, hardware store, etc. No cars were stolen! We all had head bolt heaters on the car engines that we plugged in at night. Everyone had jumper cables to help get other people’s cars started if needed. School was never cancelled as the “townies” get always get there (my mom was a teacher so WE both were always there) and it was rare when the buses didn’t run. There were road graders as all the roads were gravel, not paved, but no snow plows back then. But the cars and buses all had chains on, or then in the 60’s, used studded tires during the snowy time of the year. The streets became snow packed. There were several years when the temp didn’t get above zero during the whole month of January. I don’t remember anything ever being cancelled due to weather and people still showed up for any scheduled events. We knew how to dress for the cold and how to always be prepared.

Linda – I recognize those details from my childhood in the 50’s except maybe not as cold. I remember huge snow drifts behind our chicken house – we’d get up on the roof and jump down. And we weren’t allowed to wear pants to school – we wore them under our dresses. Brrr – as we waited for the bus outside.

I remember those days in north central Minnesota. A funny story. My boyfriend (now my husband) came up to see me over the Christmas break, and he had a new hot Ford car. Well, it got really cold, and on Sunday morning it was -40*. He went out in the middle of the night to start his car and warm it up a bit. Well, when we got ready to go to church, he got in his car to start it, and it went rrrrr. My mom had an old 50 something Chevy and she always picked up kids in the country, so we tried her car and it started right up, and it hadn’t been plugged in! We were engaged at that time, and he was so embarrassed that his new car wouldn’t start but my mom’s did. She ribbed him about that several times, but sadly, my Mom passed away when I was 30, so we missed a lot of good times with her. Like Linda said, school was never canceled when it got that cold in MN and we survived.

Well, in 1962, our school district didn’t have school for 6 weeks. Rock Rapids (I think) had the record amount of snow…134 inches! The wind blew and it snowed. The drifts were so hard. They would try to have school and the wind would come up, and home we went! The plows opened the roads and the intersections were square! Made for interesting turns with a bus. I was in the 7th grade and I do not remember being bored. I don’t think it was in my vocabulary then. 🤣. Then spring came and you could t get around because of the mud! What a year!

We have been unseasonably warm this year in northern California. It was almost 60 degrees today. I actually opened a few windows to air out the house this afternoon. And while that sounds good, especially if you are in freezing temperatures, the fruit trees and plants don’t know its not spring. Hopefully we get colder weather soon.

  9. Ginger S in New Hampshire

It has snowed most of the day here in New Hampshire . And It looks like more for Sunday. Thankfully we haven’t had the frigid temperatures that you are having. Our refrigerator bit the dust today. Ironically, I had just told my husband that I wanted to give it a good cleaning. Looks like that’s going to happen! Bummer.
I think nativities for December would be perfect!
