Gypsy Wife, Week 14, September 14

We are making more filler blocks – hourglass blocks this time in 3 sizes.  I had never constructed an hourglass block with this technique so I was happy to learn something new.  Each hourglass block is bordered in a different way.

Here is the 4″ block.

Here is the 6″ block.

And here is the final 5″ block.

I read ahead to next week and saw that we will be making 35 small blocks.  I’m going to gather my fabrics during the next week so I won’t be so pressured to pick and sew all at once.  You might want to plan ahead as well so you don’t fall behind.

Yes, Diane, that’s the book I loved so much – Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf.  I ordered his other books on Amazon and can’t wait to start the series of 3 books that starts with Plainsong.

Love your colors in the 6″ block. Would love a whole quilt in that combination. I have a question about the rug we will start in January. Is a frame required and if so, is there a pattern? Thank you, Peggy

Peggy – yes, a frame is required and the pattern is in the book. Frame is available from Farm Chick Quilts if you don’t want to make your own.

    Mary,
Very nice blocks with your assembly of colorful prints, patterns, plaids, etc. Can’t wait to see the 35 small blocks that are coming next.
Had a neighbor’s calico cat snoozing out on our front porch wicker settee cushion. It’s getting to know us so doesn’t dash off. Has quite a bit of white in the colorful fur. Think the cat was trying to stay out of the occasional rain drop we welcomed today. Just not enough here, but hopefully up north some real rain showers dampened the raging forest fires. Here it just cleared some of the pollution in the air. Someone flying a drone caused the fire fighting tankers to be grounded. So thoughtless!!

“Plainsong” is set in a small Colorado community of very ordinary/extraordinary people living their everyday lives caring about their neighbors. It is a gentle story that will warm your heart knowing there are really people like that out there. The characters are so real, especially the bachelor brothers, and they will all remind you of people you know.

Plainsong is an awesome book – read it years ago and still remember it fondly. You may also want to check out the book Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper. I thought it was a magical book. Love your blog posts!

Keeping up with my blocks with you. I am going to cut some squares out for the next 35 blocks so I will be ready for next week. Thanks for doing this….I totally do better when someone else is sewing along.
