Happy Fourth of July, 7-4-25

This is the view from Jo’s front door!

Why didn’t I ask for your patriotic quilts??? I so wish I had! Can you send them now? I’ve got some great ones to show you from readers but let’s keep it going. I’d love to see more.

Here’s the Country Threads Heath Bar Cake that we made for almost every occasion!

Knee high by the 4th of July!

Becky and I staged this parking picture – to add some humor to my rants about poor parking! Did you get that?

Here is a better example of spiral quilting using the width of my quilting foot.

We’ve had a quiet 4th – reading on the porch, some sewing, some long arm work as well as a nap. Tomorrow it’s back to work – the grass and the weeds all keep growing!

…….

Have you read the book about the brassiere strap that broke? By One Hung Low?

Mary, thank you for your blog about nothing. And belated birthday wishes. I have tried to comment many times, and I keep getting a screen showing error. Trying again.

Sharon – here’s your comment! I wonder why you’re getting an error. Have you reset your device recently? That might help.

All the patriotic wallhangings and quilts are fabulous! All are my favorites! Jo’s view is so pretty. These book titles are the best. Some must be new releases. 🤣
The Country Threads cake is so good! I have made it in years. Mary, I think you must have posted in the Gazette. Now I’ll have to make one soon. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Teresa – oh, yes, we printed it many times and it’s in our cookbook, too. Now it will be on your mind to make it!

50 yard dash by Willie Makeit and illustrated by Betty Won’t. Ha ha ha! Love all of these smiles!!

Mary – Nice selection of quilts. I have some red white and blue fabrics so there’s no reason I couldn’t make a patriotic quilt or wall hanging.
The raw egg issue could be altered by making a frosting of your choice (such as the 5-minute fluffy vanilla frosting) and top with the crushed Heath candy bars. I love Heath candy bars so my concern would be while waiting for the cake to cool, would there be enough candy bars left to crush? LOL
I’m going with a friend to a 5th of July potluck this evening. It’s put on by her HO, but the condo residents provide the food. I’ve never lived in a condo or a gated community so it should be interesting… I hope there’s laughter and music. We could all use some right now.
Pray for Texas. The flood in Kerrville area was devastating. It is incredibly sad. They had no idea it would rain like it did. I found one site where they’re accepting donations in Kerrville, but I’m going to donate to the Red Cross because I’m note sure about the other donation site as there was no name or phone number noted.

    Take care everyone!

Great quilt show today. I quilted my last full sized quilt in a spiral. It was so easy. My lines are about 2 inches apart. I used my walking foot. Today I canned peach butter. I had to use up some peaches. The alfalfa field next to our house is in bloom. The smell outside is amazing. Now if we can get some dry days in a row to get it baled. It’s thundering now.
    Have a great day everyone.

A couple other “books” to read. . .
Yellow River by I P Dailey.
Brown spots on the wall by Who Flung Poo
    😂

    Nice parking, Mary!!

Lindah, go for it! In six months America will be celebrating the 250th and you could enjoy your new quilt the whole year. Loved all the designs which are great inspirations for next year to create and celebrate.
    Thanks for the recipe, Mary.

Love those patriotic quilts! So many ideas that I want to try. I’m working on a patriotic quilt that I refer to as “The Monster”. Let’s just say we’ve had “issues”. But we will overcome!
Our 4th was fun. The MIL and I went to a small quilt show featuring vintage quilts. The local quilt group showcased a few of the charities they quilt for and another group makes patriotic quilts for the military hospital in Ramstein, Germany.
We had the traditional hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, and home made ice cream meal and a lovely fireworks display of a professional show with 4 additional sites shooting off at the same time.
Best of all, the evening was cool and the mosquito patches worked!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

DebMac – I’m so tempted to try the mosquito patches – the little round green ones I see online? I can’t even go outside they’re so bad here. Please let me know – I’ll order them if they’re the ones that work for you.

The view from Jo’s front door is beautiful! As are all the patriotic quilts. So far, my patriotic quilt collection consists of 1 table runner. But I have plans!

Quiet day here for the 4th, until the fireworks started at 9:00 and went on until 11:00. I couldn’t see any from our yard, just got all the noise.

  11. Pat in Michigan

Such a great assortment of red/white/blue quilts.
Love them all especially those with flags.
Very hot here today . We had about 1/2″ of rain in a surprise thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon. We needed it for the crops and gardens.
Doing some in the house crafts today, finishing a few cross stitch pieces and making a needlebook.
We’re going to watch fireworks set off on a barge out in the lake tonight. The barge catches fire almost every year!

Love the Patriotic quilts and the jokes! We’ve had a quiet 4th so far. We’re staying close to home as we offered to feed our neighbor’s three cats while they travel for a few days. Our youngest daughter came to visit and stayed overnight, that was fun. The weather here in Topsfield is just right, not too hot and a light breeze. We’ve got some mowing to do and lots of watering. Maybe go get an ice cream later. Happy Fourth of July Weekend everyone, stay safe and have fun celebrating this beautiful nation of ours! God Bless America! Jan in MA

Jo, You sure have a lovely scene at your home. Never would I have believed there was such a variety of patriotic quilts. Every one is stunning. Thanks for sharing.

  14. Fran Dixon

Thank you for the recipe. I love Heath bars! This would be a good cake to take to retreats.

The patriotic quilts are outstanding! Two of mine are on my porch draped on chairs. We just had a gully washer rain with some thunder and although the porch is covered I am sure the wind brought mist in and those quilts are damp. Wish I had my rain gauge up as I would love to know how much rain fell in the past hr.

Fireworks in the neighborhood done by 11 or earlier. It has been so very quiet otherwise. I spent a lot of time in my sewing room the past few days. Loving this quiet time. Monday starts a 4 day sew every day in a community building in nearby town. Sleep at home. I have a friend spending two nights with me. I guess I better straighten up around here and run Stewart. Means less time in the sewing room for me.

  15. Donna Sproston

Love the quilts and the book titles. My husband and I are sitting here laughing over the book titles and trying to remember more. Your birthday card is in the mail.

The patriotic quilts are fabulous!!! I had a quiet day on the 4th. My grandson’ fiancé came over to give me her dog for a few weeks. Can I make it? He’s a huge Golden Doodle that scares the cat. He’s friendly enough. They are in the middle of moving , but she said if he gets too much I can call her. Seems the least I can do to help. I’m afraid to let him loose because I can’t predict if he’d stay by me. Wish me luck.
I wondered about this raw egg yolks, too. Back in the day we had a raw eggnog after school every day. Mother was worried we weren’t getting enough nutrition. And liquid vitamins I remember.
Love the flag out front Jo’s place in Wyoming. Beautiful view. Lots of eye candy this morning! 🇺🇸❤️

How about Under the Bleachers by Seymour Butz or Over the Cliff by Ilene Dover! Haha I love those.
Our quilt guild makes patriotic quilts and gives them away to local vets at a Veterans Day program.

  18. Jean

Those patriotic quilts! They are beautiful. Makes me want to make one. There was one that I particularly liked. The one with light blue stars. Thanks so much for sharing!

  19. Charlotte in No. California

The patriotic quilts are beautiful!! I’m always looking for patriotic fabric. I piece wheelchair quilts for the veteran’s hospital. My church group ties them and then the backing becomes the binding. We deliver them by Veteran’s Day.
I was wondering why you parked Red like that. He! He! I’m sure it’s tempting to park like that. Red doesn’t want dings!

  20. Jay

Mary, I was all set to add the ingredients for your Heath Bar cake recipe to my grocery list when I realized it calls for raw egg yolks in the frosting! That seems risky to me. Is that correct? I want to make the cake, but I’m hesitant because of the raw eggs.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jay – well, we’ve been eating this cake for many years and we’re still here but you could just make a different frosting if you’re afraid. Also – I keep this cake refrigerated in the summer.

      1. Sharon F

Mary, you use the nice fresh clean eggs from your own chickens. Eggs from the crowded commercial farms are more likely to be carrying diseases.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – I guess that’s true – I’ll bet you could leave the eggs out.

Great jokes tonight to lighten the heaviness in our lives. Beautiful patriotic quilts. They inspire me to get creative. And yes Lindah in Northern CA, you need to start one now….even at 86. Who knows you might make it to 100 and then regret not making the quilt at 86. We only can live one day at a time. Mary, when you posted the red car parked cockeyed, I thought it was yours..I guessed right. We had a quiet day here. Being that darkness doesn’t come in ND until about 10:30, everyone in the neighborhood is shooting off their fireworks at 11:30 at night. I hope we can sleep.

I see you are having a great day Mary. Terrific variety of red white and blue ideas. The parking image is memorable to be sure. Nice touch.

  23. Jo in Wyoming

    I love seeing that flag.
The power company was changing out some poles and a few neighbors purchased the old poles, for $5 bucks, and added the hardware to make them flag poles. We had a flagpole raising 4th of July about 35 years ago. The kids were little and they paraded around the block with flags on their trike and bikes. It was fun.

The patriotic quilts are great. Thanks to all for sharing.
Big red gives me a chuckle.

    1. Janicce

Jo, What a great view. Did you mention a while back, that you had about 100 trees on your property? Did I remember that right? If so, are they on the backside of your property? Janice , Traverse City area.

Or the book “Rusty Bedsprings”, written by I.P. Nightly. Or “Five Miles to The Outhouse”, written by Willie Make-it and illustrated by Betty Won’t. Happy birthday, USA and belated birthday wishes to you.

  25. Lindah in northern CA

    Happy 4th to all!
Beautiful patriotic quilts. Makes me wonder why I never made one? Would I dare start one now at age 86? 🙂
Thanks for sharing the cake recipe. It sounds so good and not too complicated. What are Heath Bars like? I’m not sure I have seen them in the store. Maybe I could find a sub?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lindah – Heath bars are hard toffee covered with chocolate. You can buy these bits in a bag, too – find them by the chocolate chips. 86 is not too old to try most anything!! I love red, white and blue quilts!! I’ve made many but could always make another.
