Guess where Hazel went first thing this morning – yup, right back to the grove! I was drinking coffee in the porch (it was almost too hot at 6:30 am) and she came in to sit on the back of the chair.

When I got home from church she went back to the grove again and I followed. YES, the woodchuck was still in the log and chattering right back at Hazel and Keeper! Now why in the world wouldn’t that woodchuck have moved during the night? I don’t get it….unless it has babies in there? Wouldn’t that complicate things? Tonight she must be too hot because she’s in the house at bedtime. Hallelujah!
Right now at 10 pm our heat index is 104!!! WHAT? And inside the barn it must feel like 120. My poor chickens and Dottie and Sarah – nothing I can do but hope for cooler temps.
So, grab your coffee and tell us how your family is handling the heat. I don’t remember having the AC on for this many days but I feel very bad for those without it. I have a window unit in my bedroom upstairs, thank goodness. I did mow everything around the barn this afternoon – and yes, it was really hot.
This is our county fair week – I absolutely hate to see the animals in small cages and livestock tied up in the heat with just enough room to lay down. So I will go to the quilt show and come home.

Remember my 30s project? I made a few blocks tonight while I watched Primal Fear on my IPad. As you can see Three has taken Pammie’s spot getting close to me. Ugh. And he’s at least twice the size as Pammie. Twenty pounds of cat laying in front of me!

Here is Pam’s address again:
Pam Kerns

I stopped to see her after church today – I see fear in her eyes but she did say a couple words to me so I think she can still talk.
It’s time to cut some hydrangeas.

The word for the day was HOT!

The heat sounds horrible. We had great weather but the rains came on Sunday. A little drizzly rain yesterday and today. Yesterday we drove to Vernon, a town about five hours north east from us. We are staying with my sister in law and brother in law on Okanagan Lake. Very nice to be at a waterfront cabin. Slight glitch there are wildfires and it’s smoky here. It was really bad last night, I woke up with a horrific sinus headache. We leave tomorrow to go back home and are taking my mother in law home as well. Thursday we leave for camping with our son, daughter in law and granddaughter close to Sandpoint Idaho. They called us with happy news last night, they are expecting a baby in early February so we will have two grandchildren and Catherine will be a big sister. She’s very excited. After camping we are taking our granddaughter back to our farm for a week then we will drive back to Elko, NV to take her home. Busy two weeks we are having.
Keep cool everyone and I hope the temperatures drop for you all soon.
Teresa – does your mil live in the area as well? And how old is the granddaughter – wow! Sounds like a lot of work to me but fun as well as a new baby!!
Hazel is hilarious! Sarah and Dot are so cute; they seem to enjoy living at your farm. I love your 30’s blocks.
Your temps have been much higher than in Central IL.
Take Care 🥰
Sure, changed my email address and now it worked. I have not been able to comment. Lucky you! Haaha.
Poor animals at the fair. So stifling hot.
Those goats are so cut and so is Hazel!
Testing
Between glasses fogging up when I bent over, and the horrendous flies due to no breeze, I had to give up trying to weed the asparagus Saturday. Yesterday, DS & GD showed up with her new little 4-wheeler, so had to go out and watch her on that. She’s quite chuffed with it, all pink as are her helmet & gloves. All were drenched by the time she got too hot & sweaty to ride any more.
GRRR on groundhogs! We’ve been battling one that decided the hostas behind the house would be a dandy spot to put a den. We thought we had it run off last fall, but it was back late this spring. We thought we had it solved again, only for another to show up and continue excavation. Between smoke bombs & ammonia rags in the tunnel…we haven’t seen one again for about a week now. I’m NOT holding my breath, as the next step is to dig up the hostas when we know it’s in there. It’s tempting to ask if we can borrow Hazel if it shows up again 🙂
You need to borrow Hazel!!!! LOL
Yes. Hazel is the one to get the job done.
So Mary. What is Hazel’s favorite treat? Mud in a hollow stump? I need to know in case you decide to visit various places to lease out her spot on services.
Li – haha! Hazel cannot be tempted with treats when she is focused on any type of wild critter!
JustGail – she would simply love the job and would not quit until she got him. When “on the job” she is relentless and too focused to even hear me calling. A true JRT
Has been terrible hot here. Our county fair was last week-started Wednesday. It rained late Tuesday night so was cool Wednesday evening for fair rides. Each day after got hotter and hotter. Im sure those who went to the fair on Saturday were miserable. We mowed Saturday morning and stayed inside for the rest of the day-if you stepped outside, your glasses would fog up. My mother in law is in the hospital so went to see her yesterday. It was over 100 outside and the heat index was 126. Unbelievable! Walking on the tarred parking lot felt like you could melt. Going to cool off starting tomorrow.
Where do you live Cindy K? It’s helpful to put that beside your name or at least in the comment when commenting about your weather.
Martha – I love that you’re doing this – to see my blog readers become email or comment friends means the world to me! Thank you!
Hi Martha
I live in Kansas
Cindy – I just told Rick the same thing about my glasses – fogged up outside! I am very worried about our fair starting this week – those poor animals!
Beautiful clouds form here in the afternoon, and have been bringing rain for the last week or so – so grateful! Temps around 95 but this is cooler than late June, early July. Such variety around the world; take heart, as it all changes! Cute little goats, with big horns! Watch out, Mary! We don’t have woodchucks here, but the squirrels and chipmunks run amok over, under, within all the plants. Prayers for your old arthritic goat to not hurt.
I will get a card out to Pam today. It’s sad to hear you saw fear in her eyes, but that is understandable. Hopefully that stage will pass soon and she will find peace. I’ve seen that before in family members, perhaps it is because they are trying to figure out where they are or who you are, either way it is still very sad.
Those silly dogs don’t forget a thing! Mine do the very same, Sammie the Aussie especially. She and Hazel would make the dirtiest, diggingest and stinkiest team ever!! Smart as they come but stubborn and tenacious! I’ll wait to see if Sam and Nelson remember who they saw this morning at the barn. As we left the barn this morning there were about 8 of the cutest tiny little ducks in the driveway! I couldn’t count them all because Sammie and Nelson had to see who they were so little ducks where scampering everywhere and rolling around being pushed by intrigued noses. Those little guys were fast, I couldn’t catch any or I would have caught them and put them somewhere so the many hawks and eagles we have wouldn’t get them, much less fox and coyotes. I didn’t see or hear mom which really scares me and I have no idea where the little dolls were going, our pond is the opposite way of their travel. I know the dogs will be sniffing like crazy when we go back to feed the donkeys tonight.
It is hot and very sticky here too. We had about four consecutive days where it was beautiful and I had windows open but the house is closed up so we can live comfortably through weather that is getting more foreign to Michigan by the day.
Blessings to all, stay happy and healthy!!
Linda – No mama duck??? WTH? Your dogs didn’t grab those babies?
When my mom had a stroke and ended up at Concord her mind was sharp and she hated being paralyzed. We thought it would have been kinder to take her mind as well so she wouldn’t realize where she was.
How man goats do you have?
Dee – 2 very old goats and 2 babies, Dottie and Sarah
I saw an Iowa heat index map and some places had heat indexes over 120! I grew up in a big farmhouse in southern Iowa, and we didn’t have air conditioning. I remember my brothers, sister and I would sleep on the living room floor or couch when it was too hot upstairs. (My parents also made us sleep downstairs in severe weather.) All of my windows were so foggy yesterday morning, I couldn’t see out. I went out to water in the evening. It was so hot that when I went back inside through the garage, the garage felt like it had air conditioning!
I got my cards ready to mail. Our Dollar General burned down several months ago. I had to wait until I had an errand out of town to restock my cards. I’ve got a card ready for Betty Lamb, too.
Sheryl – thank you for sending cards!!! We also slept in the floor downstairs when it was hot.
I think you should write a book called”Hazel and the Woodchuck “. Dottie and Sarah are so darn cute!
I’m staying in my sewing room getting little things finished.
Margie – just wanted to say I look for Tim many times a day when I drive by the woodshed in hopes I’ll see him there.
Uff, we need rain! I’m staying inside and praying for rain.
We have been just staying in. Grands have swim lessons this week in the morning, then home for lunch and indoor activities. I told the kids they could paint pictures today and that will occupy maybe 5 minutes. Lol
Been working on items to sell at my church sale in November. 10 pairs pot holders, 8 car trash bags yesterday. Now on to zipper bags made from old quilt pieces.
Love your goats!
Diana, I remember those rural church bazaar that were popular in MN during the 60s-70s. They even had turkey dinners. Sadly most of those churches are closed now. My home church is surviving with about 15 members.
I am 76 and growing up in Ohio we only had a box fan and prayed for cool weather. Now I have air conditioning and would die without it. We haven’t even had a decent breeze in MD. The heat is bad but the humidity gets me more. So I hibernate in summer not winter. So lots of REAL ice tea and good books help a lot. We used to make dinner out of fresh corn and tomatoes on bread sometimes with bacon and sometimes just mayo and we were satisfied. The season isn’t long enough. Got my card off today hope it brings a smile to her face
Angie – Yup, sounds familiar and not even that many fans for every bedroom. I remember as a kid sleeping outside thinking it would be cooler and you’re right – no breeze! Hang in there.
The heat has been bad here for quite a few months now. I feel like it’s too hot to do much of anything. Yesterday I watered plants and repotted a couple and I was a drippy mess when I finished. So I sit and sew in the AC. I dread the electric bill…… ugh. I keep telling myself I’m worth it!!! I texted with a friend in England — even hot there. Just reaffirms to me that I don’t want to end up in hell……
I hope everyone is staying cool.
Lynette – my scalp sweats like crazy until it drips down my neck! I think my Prednisone is responsible actually plus the temps – bad combination is extreme heat
Mine too but I’m not on prednisone. I’m sure that’s adding to the heat for you. 🥴
Mary- I think it’s the humidity that’s causing us to sweat to the point our hair is dripping wet. When I was emptying cabinets & moving anything breakable from my home, I couldn’t believe how drenched I got so fast. Now I get to put everything back! This was to have the new flooring put down.
Mary I purchased a long narrow ice pak. It is made out of something like a light windbreaker fabric. Easy to place around my neck in such heat. Keep it stored in the freezer and use it often. You would probably need to rotate three neck wraps in a small cooler on ice while you work.
Hi Mary, chilly day(and night) in New Zealand, zero degrees Celsius, little bit of frost on grass,Bella was choosing where to go to the toilet when l took her outside! Three looks very cosy by the machine, hope she is helpful. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – helpful????? Hahaha!
Yup! You got that heat that we had on Saturday. I was with my daughter and her family at the ND State Fair. I was a wet mess! I looked as if I had stepped out of the shower. It was still stifling hot at 10 pm. Today was quite warm but not like Saturday. I did some bubble blowing with my grand daughter earlier Sunday evening. She loved jumping around and popping them. It looks like a “cooler” day Monday with only a high of 92. Good night everyone and think “cool.”
