Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig, 7-13-2

I got home last night around supper time. Keeper was in the front seat of the van with Rick and when I walked out of the hospital, I waved at him and he came to life – wiggling, turning, smiling and I was afraid he might jump out. I had Rick bring a pillow to put across my middle to protect it from his excitement.

Hazel sat on my lap all the way home and Keeper has hardly left my side. I slept in the big bed last night and Keeper slept waaayy too close to me! And of course I didn’t sleep – I had been sleeping in the hospital for 3 whole days for cryin out loud! I don’t ever sleep 7-8 hours a night. Ugh.

I don’t have that much pain today unless I hiccup and that hurts my midsection- not as much as Weds night but that was over the top.

The waiting game for biopsy results is on – and of course I’ll let you know. I will have a blood test Monday morning and if it’s gone down I’m probably bleeding somewhere still. You might as well travel this journey with me because the blog about nothing is daily life on the farm and my daily life is changing.

I didn’t get a picture today but Tim’s corn tasseled out overnight.

That’s all my news – I’m home using a walker, not bending, not lifting – watching tv and tonight I’m going back to my sewing machine.

Rick went down to lock the chickens up and he was down there for the longest time and I was just about ready to break the rules and go down there when he did come in. I asked what had happened and I quote Rick ETHERINGTON:

The sons a bitches wouldn’t go in!

.

Reader photos

And this is Hazel and me in the porch this morning – she lays between my legs.

And a good time was had by all!

My Klaus sleeps between my legs in the recliner just as Hazel is with you. The difference is that he wants to be under a blanket – he’ll claw at my legs until I grab the blanket to cover us. It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter he wants a blanket. Not always what I want though!
Rick and the chickens sounds like my husband and the cats. They ignore him for the most part and if I’m gone he only sees them when it’s time for food. Our animals definitely know who the important people are – the ones who care the most about them.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan k – my animals’ comfort and well being are my number one purpose every single day. When I have to leave them again I’ll be so worried especially about Keeper. What will I do?

      1. Susan K in Texas

I so know what you mean! They are so dependent on us and used to our care specifically.
With all of the trips to Iowa and back and people taking care of the cats, I’ve seen some behavior changes that worry me. Hopefully I’ll be able to bring them with me soon.

  2. Lora

Oh my gosh Mary! I am catching up on email and just read about your ordeals!!! I am so glad you are back home and hopefully on the mend. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Is there a food you are hungry for or outside work I could help with? Please let me know!! Sending you prayers and healing vibes!!

Hi Mary! I’m so glad you’re home! I will be praying for good test results and for healing for you. I know those pups are happy you’re home! Love the picture of the moose. Seeing a moose in the wild is a bucket list item for me!

  4. Linda K

Welcome home Mary. Please take care of yourself and let others do for you! Prayers are surrounding you from all parts so there is no escaping. If your animals are like ours- they ‘know’ when something is up and they will be your best support.

  5. Barbara Firesheets

Happy to hear you’ve made it back home and are taking it easy. I know you’ve got a good crew (Rick, Hazel, and Keeper) looking after you. Still sending love prayers your way for your complete recovery and good biopsy results.

PS: Funny how the kids (chickens) act up when mama isn’t there! Ha!

  6. Jeanne in Co.

Mary, you asked how long before my bleeding stopped.. It probably had stopped sometime during my 4 day hospital stay, but it was about a week after I came home before all signs of blood were gone. Drs. think I was bleeding two days before going to the emergency room. I did not have pain to alert me something was wrong, only a couple of days of just not feeling well. I am scheduled for another Gastro scope on the 24th to see if the ulcer has healed. Starting PT on Wed., hoping it will help with getting strength back into my legs so I can shed the walker. I’m praying your pain is gone and the biopsy is benign, but glad you are close enough to Mayo to have the mass removed there. Praise God for the “Sam’s” in this world. They are truly a blessing.

  7. Sharon G NE IN

So glad that you are back home! It’s hard to rest in the hospital. The Rick and chickens story is too funny!!! Your dogs really missed you and I’m sure the cats did, too, although they don’t outwardly show how much like dogs do. LOL

  8. Donna O from WI

Prayers for a speedy recovery and good news from your doctor.
I had to chuckle at Richards chicken roundup attempt.

  9. Joy B from Missouri

Oh, Mary, I am so sorry to hear of your health issues! Keeping you in my prayers for good test results and a speedy recovery.
Loved today’s post and the beautiful flower pics.

  10. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Mary – Praying for you daily. I know how hard it is to do nothing! I am like you; I have to be doing something all the time.
Patti in FL – I love your blue and white quilt. I may have to try making that sometime. I’m like you—I only want to work with squares and rectangles anymore. Do not like triangles.
Stay cool everyone. Suppose to get in the mid 90’s in Iowa today. That’s hard on crops and gardens.

  11. Pat Smith in VT

Poor Rick is like the substitute teacher. I always got tales I hated when I came back from being gone when I was a teacher. Hope he had better luck in getting the chickens to come out this morning. There is nothing more shocking than a sudden health emergency when it is completely unexpected. I’m glad the dogs are being loving and showing how much they care. We just arrived in Vermont last night after the miserable drive north from Florida. We survived once again and are now in beautiful Vermont where it still isn’t cool enough but will be soon. Thinking of you with positive thoughts.

  12. Mary Lou

Isn’t Home always the best place to be when things get out of order…Sooo wishing for a speedy recovery
and good results from the Dr’s… Our Dogs we call Fur Kids as they are some of the best medicine
for recovering from most anything.. – in our prayers for good news from Doctors… Take care and
rest and maybe sew a little if you feel like it – will take your mind off for awhile…

Wishing the best always and soon better

  13. Norma

Good to see you there on your porch with Hazel!
Praying you will feel better each day and that Monday’s report will be good.
My husband gets so frustrated with the chickens on these long summer days! There are a couple that love to stay out late!

  14. Carol Johnson

Praying all is well and you are on the road to recovery and getting on that lawn mower again! When you are used to being active, it’s hard to sit still. And you miss even the worst of farm chores! Glad he was able to get the chickens in, probably with a few explicits! animals have a mind of their own. Seems when my husband does something on his own something always happens. My son and I say we can’t take a day off, the whole ranch falls apart! It takes a tribe.! Rest and relax! You deserve it!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – how hard can it be? He won’t do it like I ask so it’s always harder. He’s not a happy camper and right now he’s mowing –

  15. Donna Jo

I’m late reading and commenting so I hope Rick had an easier time wrangling the chickens!😆 Glad you’re home and feeling better Mary. Good luck with your test today.

  16. Cindy

Praying for a speedy recovery. Hope you get your results back soon and they are good news.

  17. Kris in WI

I’ll add my get well wishes to those already expressed. Thanks so much for keeping us up-to-date.
Please tell Rick that my husband laughed out loud at the SOB chickens! The Parkinson’s may have slowed DH down, but he still has his sense of humor…even though Rick’s comment wasn’t meant to be funny! Updates from The Chicken Wrangler would be likewise appreciated. 😊
Lovely pictures of quilts, gardens, and pets today. Thanks to all who sent them.
Take care, Mary. Prayers for all continue. Kris

    1. Kris in WI

Oops–Mama moose and her calf are probably not pets, more like pests at times, but still so good to see
Mother Nature gives us a glimpse into her world now and then. Thanks, Chris. Kris

  18. Bonnie McKee

OH HOW I LAUGHED at Rick’s comment about the chickens who didn’t want to go to bed. I have felt his frustration many times! Danged birds!
Mary I’m so glad you survived the hospital stay and can be back home where your dogs and kitties want you!
We are all anxious to hear the results of Monday morning’s tests. When you feel up to it please let us know how it went.
    You’re in my prayers.
    Bonnie in Oregon
    P.S. I’m still chuckling at Rick’s comment 😄

  19. Connie in NV

You have been on my mind since learning you were in the hospital and had surgery. Thank you for letting us know you are home, that is a sign you are better.
I’m sure you enjoyed the basketball game today even though you couldn’t pace the floor! I told my husband they are becoming the comeback kids with their last minute wins.
Maybe Hazel and Keeper could help Rick get the chickens in for the night since they are use to the dogs as well as you.
We finally had a monsoon and the temperature dropped 13 degrees. We opened the house to smell the rain and let some moist air come inside, we had a good downpour.
Enjoyed all of the pictures today of the quilts, gardens and pets.

  20. Patricia

Wow Mary, I was wondering who Sam was. I didn’t even know they had such a person who checked in to remind you to take meds and eat. Great idea. I hope there is someone bringing you meals. I suspect Rick doesn’t really cook. I imagine the brain is a bit groggy from the pain meds, maybe the body too.
I’ve enjoyed all the pictures of quilts and flowers and your buddies. Love the pink robe!
It’s been too damn hot here so seeing you in a robe must mean it’s cool enough to need it. We complain about the cold all winter and now we are complaining about the heat. Air conditioning running continuously.
I still can’t post unless someone else posts. I sure wish I could figure out the problem here.
Continued prayers you’re feeling better and that all will be well. You need a caregiver. Hope Rick is able to help you out some. Appreciate you are still reporting on what’s happening.
    Pat in Md.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Patricia – I talk about my pretend grandchildren – Sam is their mother- she’s been a huge help!! Rick cooks some – enough to take care of himself but it’s not the kind of meals I want!

  21. Debra Reber

Mary, so glad you are home! Sending prayers for a quick recovery & a good biopsy report. Take some time to rest & relax so you can heal. Give those dogs lots of love!!

  22. Chris in Alaska

Mary so happy you are back home ! It’s taken me all week to be able to leave a comment so hopefully that’s fixed on my end 🙂 Hugs to you and Rick and your pets ❤️

  23. Jean Sherrard-Fifo

Oh Mary! What a time you’re having! And what a freaky/scary thing! Relieved you are at home recovering and sending prayers that everything turns out fine. Poor Rick! His trials with the chickens made me laugh out loud! Hang in there lady!

  24. NancyTD

Glad you are home. I found your Fri. and Sat posts in junk this evening. We had a bad thunderstorm last evening and lost power several hours.
I thought you were busy with your company and did’t post. Glad I was cleaning things out.
Take care of yourself. Let Rick wait on you. Prayers for good results.
Pics of the flowers and quilts were enjoyed.

  25. Beth

Hope you’re up and about soon and all the tests come back with good results. I’ve been following you forever when you and Connie were young whippersnappers and you feel like family. Take care!

Hi Mary, pleased to see you are home again, take it easy! Rick has a new title l think, !Rick the chicken wrangler! The family have gone to Rotorua for a few days, there are hot pools there, geysers, and it is rich in Maori history, so the girls should learn lots.l hope you saw the interview with Caitlin l sent you, relax and enjoy your fur babies company Mary. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy l

  28. Susan in AL

It’s wonderful to hear that you are back home with all who are near and dear or one or the another LOL

Are you feeling like eating? What sounds good to you? I’m guessing that hospital jello is NOT on the menu. Are you a patient patient, or are you anxious to be up and about?

When my husband had a test in the hospital and came home all groggy, he told me that they said that he should take it easy, so he was going to call and have pizza and wings delivered and take a nap. I just looked at him with the “You Must Be Joking” glare and explained that “take it easy” meant that he should not reshingle the roof but he was perfectly fine to make his own sandwich. Those men are always trying to get away with everything! We, on the other hand, don’t want to be a bother … but we should probably learn to let that go.

  29. Paula

Mary, you crack me up! You re still entertaining us even after a really horrible week! So glad you are home and I hope you heal quickly!

  30. Teresa from Port coquitlam, BC

So glad you are home Mary. It’s always better to recover in your own home. Take it easy and a speedy recovery. Thinking about you lots, take care. For the readers the two pictures of hydrangeas are my back yard. When I planted the white hydrangea between the two lace capped ones there was about a four foot gap. The two outer hydrangeas are supposed to grow 2 to 2-1/2 ft tall and wide. Well this fall I will move the white hydrangea and let the two purple ones close in the gap. They are so beautiful and will have these flowers into September. So far they are about 5 feet wide.

Glad you are home! And thank you for sharing about your recovery – we are here for you and want to support you on this journey! Sending love your way ❤️

  33. Bernadette in NE Iowa

Welcome home Mary, hope the biopsy is in your favor. Prays for a fast recovery, but obey the doctor’s orders. Enjoy the company of Hazel and Keeper. Don’t be too hard on Rick.

  34. Pattie from PA now CO

Sending many prayers for your recovery Mary. We just never know what the Lord has in store for us. Rest!

  35. Linda from Georgia

So happy to hear that you are home and being well cared for by Rick, Keeper and Hazel! Keep on healing.
It must have been quite a shock because I am sure that you were not planning on spending time in the hospital. You are one busy lady but take the time to heal!

  36. Janet Easley

    Mary,
So glad to hear that you are home with your family – two legged and four-legged. Keep us posted, but don’t feel driven to post something every day. Your health and getting the rest and answers you need are of prime focus. I loved the “jiggety jig” in your title – it made me smile. Recuperation at home is a whole different mindset.

  37. Kathy SW PA

So sorry to hear about your situation, Mary. Sending prayers and blessings for a speedy recovery and positive news about the biopsy.

  38. Kathy in western NY

Mary, what an ordeal you’ve had but so thankful you were there at the hospital at the worst time. Waiting for biopsy results is stressful but praying for a good outcome. So many miss you when you are laid up and I imagine the prayers were plenty at your church this morning too. Best of luck with your blood draw tomorrow to be good so you can rest assured.

We’re all praying for you, so you’re covered in that area.
Wishing you and dog buddies a restful night!😻

  40. Sharon G.

Mary – Glad you are home. So sorry you are going through this. Hang in there, Mary.
So glad Keeper and Hazel were there to greet you. Looks like thy are staying close and keeping an eye on you. Sounds like the chickens wanted you to put them up for the night, not Rick. They might get used to him but it’s really you they want to see. Maybe in a few days you can go outside and do a walk-about and check out the farm and what is going on.
    Happy sewing.
    Take care Mary.
    Hugs,
    Sharon G.

  41. Barbara in New York

Just spending a quiet afternoon on our screened porch. The farmers have been mulching their fields around here so the flies are bad today. Just realized that when I’m up North for the summer/fall, every quilt related project involves cats. When we go South for the winter, I do birds. The beautiful bird quilt made me think of this. Working on a 3-D cat quilt for our state fair next month. Hope you are resting on your porch. Just take one day at a time.

  42. Sherry Ware

So sorry you’re going thru this!!! Hope you come thru all this all good!
Know all about those pups. If I’m gone several hours you would have thought I had been gone for days. Haha.
    Hugs,

Sherry – nobody knows what that “winter” comment means – haha! But I’m glad you identify yourself that way so I know who I’m talking to. Those were the days, weren’t they?

  43. Debbie in SC

So glad you are home and feeling better! You are such a busy worker and it will be hard to stay still but-don’t do anything strenuous. Continued prayers for test results and recovery.

  44. Brendalynne

Glad to hear you are home and feeling better. Prayers for good news re results of tests.

  45. Margie from Ohio

So glad you are home! Please take it easy. Tell Ric I am sorry the chickens gave him trouble, but his words brought a smile to my face. My dad has been gone many years, but I can hear him saying those same words!

  46. Tanya T. In Houston

So glad you are home! Just. Be good and don’t try to do too much too soon! Love that Rick!
We went to church this morning. New pastor seems great. Many people only got power last night and many still without. Big church down the street was still without power. Garbage trucks are running, but no lawn refuse pick up since before Beryl. Some red lights still out. Huge impact overall. Glad you have tv and computer and sewing machine, too!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Tanya – my previous reply disappeared! I said we have forgotten about you guys when you’re not front and center on the news. And here your utilities aren’t even back to normal!!
Sam is my overseer and calls or texts me when it’s time to take pills, eat, etc. and it must be working because I do feel better today.

      1. Li

I swear that being sick and having to take medication is a full-time job. Empty stomach? Or, after a meal? Geez. The porch looks ultimately inviting. We trimmed the lavenders and I am crossing my fingers for a second bloom this year. The temperatures are perfect. Trying to decide between half square triangles or sashed blocks as a quilt top for the three year-old living at the corner house.

  47. Dee in Ohio

I got a kick out of Rick. My husband would have said the same thing. I hope he got an “ice tea” after that

  48. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

    Hello Mary,

Glad you are home with Rick and Hazel and Keeper and all. Nothing like a dog to aid recovery (as long as you can keep them of your lap!). Fingers crossed for the lab results, and may recalcitrant chickens be the worst of your problems going forward!

  49. Karen Cyr

Glad to see that your canine support system has you well in hand. The chickens will get used to Rick and him to them. Positive thoughts for steady and quick recovery.

Mary, I am so glad to hear you are home. Apparently, your chickens don’t want Rick putting them to bed. 🤣
    We both howled!
I continue sending love and prayers for a speedy recovery.

  63. patti

so glad to hear that you are home. laughed at rick having trouble getting the chickens in. must be kinda like trying to wrangle cats. they are not used to him doing it. naturally hazel and keeper are right next to you and will probably stay really close for a while. maybe it won’t be as traumatic for keeper when you have the surgery to remove the mass because now he’ll know you will be back. and of course, you’ll tell him.
jeanne, i love your bird quilt (crows?)? the blue/white quilt was taken off design wall many moons ago and is just the right size for one of the charities, someone else will quilt and bind it. the pinwheel quilts are very colorful. the flowers are always gorgeous. rest and take care of yourself. i’m sure you’ll get tired of hearing that but you need to hear it often. you are not used to others doing for you. quilty hugs, patti in florida

Yay! You’re home! Everything is always better when you are home. Sure can tell Hazel and Keeper missed you. I’ll bet the chickens weren’t cooperating because they were thinking “You’re not my mom and you’re not the boss of me “.
Lovely flower beds, moose family was special and gorgeous quilts.

  73. MarleneT in upstate NY

So glad you are home-what an ordeal. Just chill out for awhile and you should start improving. I can only do a few things outside (I’m 74) in this disgusting humidity. I get out the hose to water plants and do a few chores and that’s it. This getting older stuff is so annoying. I belong to a quilt group that meets at a Sr. housing complex in town. One gal is 91 and she is allowed to sign out the meeting area once a week. You would crack up over our health related discussions. Some of the gals crochet or knit and rest of us quilt. It’s such a great break to just get together and work on a project. We use big banquet tables and its air-conditioned. Please take care, I’ll keep you in my prayers.
P.S. love the two mini quilts, so colorful.

Mary, Yes, welcome home. Just take it easy and get better. Hope your results come soon. Hazel and Keeper look content now too. Like the quilts and flowers. We will be in the high 90’s today. Got a bad very
windy storm this am early . Got 1 3/4″ of rain with it. Has it gotten to you guys as seen from the tv screen
that it was heading east to MN. and IA. The wind would not be good for Tim’s corn and other farmers’ crops. Enjoy Caitlin this afternoon!

It’s good to see you back home with your loved ones. Poor Hazel and Keeper missed you. Take care, dear friend.

Glad you’re home Mary. Take it easy now. My husband had hip replacement this past Wednesday. It was same day surgery! Sure is different from the last one he had done 23 years ago. He’s walking with a walker , too. Hoping he heals as fast as last time but he’s older now so??

Mary so glad you’re home. The dogs sure missed you. They are your therapy. Take it easy. Ask Rick if the cussing worked to get the chickens in the barn. Maybe a recording of your voice that he takes out with him will work. Just a thought.
We have a family reunion today. Thank heavens they now have a building with air conditioning. It’s the Schrader side of the family, aunts and uncles cousins, first, second and third generations. Never know how many will come but fun anyway.
    Stay cool and safe.

    1. Cindy Sabinske

Yes, I thought about you doing a recording on Rick’s phone of you calling in the chickens or whatever you say to them to herd them in at night as well! Worth a try, anyway. I think life this year is one crisis after another for whomever it is applicable.

  83. Sue Bowers

Mary, Prayers are coming your way for a quick recovery. You must not feel very good or you wouldn’t be wearing that warm robe in the middle of the heat wave we are experiencing.
