Is it September Already? 7-5-23

It’s going down to 50 degrees tonight! What? Last night I used two fans – what happened?

Thank you for all the birthday cards! The Fourth of July always interferes with my cards – haha! Today I got a stack of them – thank you!

I’ve been fielding emails, texts and comments about the Oh, Susannah! book and I ordered more today. Thank you for your interest in my 75th birthday gift to myself. It’s been so fun! Becky and I are working on adding her singing Oh, Susannah! to my Facebook post but we’re not quite there yet.

I did post the cover on Instagram under marybetherington with singing by James Taylor and it adds a lot.

I planned to make valances for 20 windows this summer and I haven’t even started! Remember the gray long haired cat who belonged to my neighbor and I took in? Her name is FluffyBun. Well, she has disappeared – maybe just hiding out in the grove? I hope she’ll show up again. I’m worried.

And then I have another gray kitten in the quilt shop – her name is Lucy. She was dumped at my neighbor’s house and her dogs terrified the poor thing so she called me. This little stinker is up for adoption – when I find her as well although she’s in the quilt shop. I see evidence every morning – fabric knocked off shelves, things disturbed but she is hiding so well I can’t find her. I had her in a secure kennel – at least I thought it was secure. She climbed up the wire wall and wiggled under the fluorescent bulbs to get out!

See that space underneath the bulbs? Yup, that’s how she got out. Unbelievable. When I know I have someone who will adopt her I’ll take away the food and use a live trap. It’s my only solution, don’t you think?

I know you’re wondering “what was she thinking?” I don’t know what I was thinking – I assumed she couldn’t get out of the kennel. Sigh.

Rick’s getting along fine but it’s slow, so slow. I want to do everything in my life FAST! He has permission to drive tomorrow but really? How would he get out of the car, grab his walker, open doors? Not going to happen.

So here’s the Oh, Susannah! ordering info again.

If ordering by mail, price is $20 PPD. I’d appreciate an address label. cash or check only. No credit cards, no Venmo. I’m not in business here – I’m just making a simple children’s book available literally at my cost plus tax. I’ll bet your grandchildren would enjoy it!

Book is available at Junkin Gal in Garner for $15 – no postage involved.

This has been a labor of love – love that I experienced with Susannah and it might possibly be the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. Raising this 1.9# baby goat was my whole life for many months. I loved it!

I have books on hand and will try to fill orders promptly. Just seeing her picture on the front cover thrills me!

Oh, I am worried about both the kitties. The little one might be a total escape artist if it could get out of that small hole. They can be so wild! Bless you for trying to take care of it. Glad to hear your husband is doing better and closer to driving. My brother is having some setbacks. After having 3 heart stents installed and as a result of MRI, finding he had an abdominal aneurysm and lung cancer, well you can imagine he is in something of a state of shock. They put in the stents and not long after did the aneurysm surgery and now want to hurry the lung cancer protocol. His primary doctor thinks they are pushing everything too fast and he needs some time to get his strength back. It is not a good place to be in. Prayers for all.

Brenda – oh my, that is a lot, isn’t it? Poor guy – I’ll bet he’s just exhausted. Please keep updating us when you can.

      1. Brenda

Yes, he is definitely exhausted. I am glad his primary care doc said he should take some time to recover. He is having issues from the aneurysm surgery – bladder infection, taking antibiotics, nausea, loss of appetite, pain from the surgery, etc. He needs to build his strength up for the road ahead.
Thanks for caring. Have a good night! I can see you are a night person as I am.

We are in an rv park in Lander WY; it was the coldest/rainiest July 4th I have ever experienced. It did stop raining in the evening, so there were fireworks.
Sorry two of the cats are having trouble settling in. If I remember correctly, Fluffybuns has wandered off before and then returned. Fireworks can be a factor with disappearing pets, too.
I am mailing my order for Oh, Susannah tomorrow.
    Take Care, 🥰

Jeanie – yes, FluffyBun did wander one other time but wasn’t gone this long. I am so worried about her.

Hi Mary, l hope Brenda’s brother is improving, it’s no fun having health problems as we age! Both cats are settling well here, l am feeding them for a few days while the family is away, l was worried after much money spent getting them from Taiwan that they would get lost, but all is well.Pleased the book is going well for you!Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Good Luck trapping your elusive kitten Mary. My husband tried to get kittens into a live trap but they didn’t weigh enough to set off the trap. He was frustrated but it was hysterical.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet – oh, shoot – I hadn’t thought about that problem – no, her weight wouldn’t close the trap. Ugh

      1. Janice Brown

Mary, what about putting a sprig or two of catnip out in the open and see if the gray kitten will come out to it while your there.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janice – it’s worth a try – I am very worried about both missing cats – I’m always anxious just searching as I go to the grove but have found nothing of Fluffybun. I just hate it – the poor cat must be terrified. Or maybe not – she might be enjoying her freedom. Wish she could find the barn and move in there with Mama who comes and goes as she pleases.

  5. Diane, Squeak, Buddy

Weather certainly can be crazy. It is hot in NC and rained in the night. Buddy hates storms and fireworks. So sorry to hear Brenda’s brother has so many problems at once. It is very hard to have health issues. Good luck with the kitties, Mary. You are so good to help all little critters😃 I was so excited when you announced Oh Susannah!! I can’t wait to get mine. Take care.

Diane, did you read my comment in Mary’s last post about Buddy? Our pets struggle terrible with storms and loud noise like fireworks too. I feel so bad for them. Wishes for Safe journey home from NC to Ohio.

      1. Diane, Squeak, and Buddy

Hi Kathy, Not yet, but I will. Thanks for the support. Our neighbor took her 4 year old grand daughter over to make Buddy feel better.😃 She loves him❤️ We’ll be home tomorrow. He does have his safe space in the basement on his fleece pillow beside the freezer in total darkness. It helps to muffle the sounds. He is a Maine Coon stray so big ears😹😹

  6. Jeanine in Iowa

It is cool , too, here in south central Iowa this morning. (57*) Our son has been here all week, and has been doing many hard jobs for us as my husband is not able to do what he would like to do. It has been such a blessing to have him here. He lives in Ohio. I am looking forward to receiving your book. I sent my check on Wednesday I think. Have a great day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – so happy your son can help you out – it’s really hard to do it all when we get older – ask me how I know that.

  7. Kathy in western NY

Oh Mary I chuckled over the driving the car part….some days I don’t think I could move any faster either than Rick and his Walker ! These hot days are keeping me in sewing though! Hope the kitties all return back safely as it’s a big worry out there for them.

  8. Betsy Scurlock

I would love to get your book. I guess I don’t have an address for you to send money and PPE. So does the $20.00 cover the postage???
    Please let me know.
    Betsy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Betsy – please check my post again – the price includes postage – PPD. My address is in the right hand column of the page you are reading. I requested only an address label – please don’t send a stamped envelope because it probably isn’t the right size and cancelled stamps are still considered used.

  9. Beverly

I sent my order in an envelope with cash for 5 books, but forgot the address labels…so wait to send them until you get my address labels…
I have a few kids I think will enjoy them…
Glad you had a nice birthday—I send card to my friends, but they just text or email me on my special day—whereas I get address labels and stamps that are for birthdays…just thinking of how fun it is—as adults!
I’d adopt the kitten if I lived close…I always look forward to your newsletter…

Beverly – thanks for letting me know and yes, I will wait for the address labels. I’ll put 5 books aside for you. Thank you so much!

Rick is probably out of physical condition so his recovery will take longer. The good news is that a hip replacement is much easier to recover from as it is a large joint to hold the weight. On the other hand, the knee is such a small joint that holds up 1/2 of the body weight. His joints didn’t get this way overnight, so he won’t recover overnight either. Such is life. Patience!! Rome wasn’t built in a day either!
Take care. Sounds like the weather is nasty all over the place.

Betty – Rick hasn’t really walked well for many many years. Think how bad it had to get before they scheduled the first surgery 2-1/2 years ago. When I was struggling to get his compression socks off tonight I did say to him – I don’t want to hear any grumbling about fixing my mirrors! Haha!
