Let Me Entertain You! 10-21-24

Oh, I have so many pictures for you – first is the wilderness trail which has been transformed into a golden pathway.

Maddie

Sue in Indiana went to all the trouble of clipping newspaper articles about Caitlin Clark for me and I have spent several happy hours reading. Thank you, Sue- you went above and beyond and I will keep them with my collection.

And this lovely quilling card came from Mary K in Iowa – this art looks impossible to me even tho now it’s made by machine. Many people used to do this by hand.

Look at this silly pointer dog that I bought at an antique mall over the weekend – solid oak dated 1983.

Reader photos

Quilt top seen at the antique mall – is it familiar to anyone?

Teresa is sending these 4 quilts to North Carolina. I know the individuals receiving these quilts will just love them!

A reader asked to see the inside of the playhouse and I cleaned it as I put gardening stuff away.

Would anyone be interested in a couple small Christmas patterns?

Even though I closed the porch I sat out there today since it was 82 degrees. I just happened to find this sign at the thrift store – it’s perfect to hang in the porch next summer.

More tomorrow…..

Antique (almost) quilt pattern is very much like Around the World published in the Kansas City Star in 1940.

Mary, does the real Maddie know the Hickety, Pickety, My Black Hen rhyme??? A lovely picture of Maddie hen. The little scarecrow figures were unexpected, and I laughed out loud when they popped up on my screen. Happy little folk, perfect for the season! I also appreciated the more sophisticated fall/ Halloween decorations, and I need to put out some of my own before all the leaves are off the trees. Teresa, your quilts for WNC look so warm and inviting. I know they will be appreciated. Does anyone want to explore the Playhouse with me? So many treasures! Time to start another load of laundry. Thanks for the pictures, everyone, and to Mary for keeping things going on the blog. Prayers continue. Kris.

    1. Hank's Mom

Since I’m Hank’s Mom and Maddie’s Grandma I will have to teach Maddie (4) the old rhyme. THANK YOU Kris for reminding me of it. I will guarantee that the real Maddie will giggle when I read the rhyme. Thank you for the lovely idea.

Thank you, Theresa, for donating such beautiful quilts to NC’s victim/survivors of the horrible storms! I hope the recipients will appreciate the work put into them. The folks there seem to be so grateful to God and those doing His work in that ravaged area!

Love the playhouse, Mary! I always envisioned something like that in our backyard where we had a slab poured years ago! But recently my husband put up a metal pole building and it’s filled with a sailboat. Ugh. I’m going to plant lots of grasses and flowers in front of it as it’s the view from my kitchen window.

  4. Brenda in Georgia

This post has definitely entertained me! Mission accomplished! I loved it all and won’t mention everything, but I am in love with Hedwig and Maddie! Thanks so much for entertaining us!

  5. Jacque Broadfoot

Always need a pattern! Whether I make it or not is another story!
Love the playhouse. I have a small tool shed built by my grandfather 80 years ago.
For some reason my husband seems disinclined to remodel it to look like yours!!! Maybe because he’s older than the shed.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jacque – the story of the playhouse is funny – it was built in a high school shop class and taken to the county fair for a very high price can’t remember exactly now but I offered them a much lower price – delivered and the brought it. Unloaded it right inside the gate and I assumed, stupidly, that I could pull it in place with the lawn tractor. Haha! We had to get a backhoe to drag it! Then Rick helped me figure out the brick patio outside – he sat in the golf cart and I laid bricks. I love my playhouse – I have taken four separate seasonal pictures of it – it is a workhorse in the summer and I hate to close the door for winter.

    2. Brenda in Georgia

Oh, I know that story about having so many patterns that I will never make at this point of being older than the shed!

I am mailing a small quilt and a book to Barbara for the hurricane victims. Thanks for letting us know about this. I’m also a thrift store shopper. Yesterday wandered into one that I don’t frequent very often was thrilled to find a stack of Junie B. Jones books for my grandson – he loves them. I always say it is like a scavenger hunt – you never know what you will discover. I really love your playhouse – it is functional but also so cute!

  7. Kelli

Love the porch sign! Just yesterday here in NE Ohio it was 80 degrees so I sat on my sun porch with the dog and read! It’s so unseasonably warm here – seems like the weather everywhere haa changed so! Years ago by this time we were wearing coats and had had a killing frost. We’ve had a few light frosts but then it warms back up. The quilts are lovely and I love your oak dog 🐕

  8. Sue in Marion, IN

Hi Mary—so glad you enjoyed the Caitlin clippings! Boy, as soon as the Fever lost in the playoffs it was all football, all the time. IU is also 7-0 for the first time in years, and the Colts are finally hitting their stride after a bad start to the season and injuries. Now basketball is getting started. They call it Hoosier Hysteria for a reason! When I was at Marion High School in the early 70’s we had 500 kids in the booster bloc! Marion at the time had a population of about 40,000 (down to about 30,000 today) and even though there were a bajillion baby boomer kids going through the school system, they wouldn’t build a second high school. Why? We were a state basketball powerhouse and they didn’t want two rival teams! We won the state championship a couple of times. Love the fall pictures !

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – I love the story about not having two rival schools. I’m not much into football but as soon as it’s cold I’ll watch because I always have to have sports in my life. Iowa State is also 8-0 for the first time since before 1938 so they’re very excited. They have a well loved coach and doing well. I DID just love the Caitlin articles – I think I’m going to make a preorder for the next hardcover book – next year they won’t lose so early in the playoffs. I see Angel is still craving the attention of everyone – Caitlin is not visible.

  9. Vicki

Love the quilling card. What an art! Teresa’s quilts are wonderful and will be so appreciated. I am interested in your small Christmas quilts. I have purchased some in the past, so will be interested in seeing if these are different and I can add them to my stack.

  10. Erin

    Great pictures! They are inspiring!

Oh, how I’d love to have that quilt top to hand quilt and keep as an heirloom! I never find those in my area.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Erin – it’s 90 min to the antique mall but if I’m that way I’ll see if it’s still there.

  11. Meredith in Cincinnati

A wonderful post! Our weather in SW Ohio has been spectacular, although we really, really need rain. Love the pictures today, and YES to Christmas patterns!

  12. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

great post today. the trail truly looks golden – so inviting. maddie the chicken is such a beautiful black. hedwig looks stout and regal. and the kitties on their catio. loved seeing the blessing quilts laid out in the church – so impressive. teresa the quilts going to nc are lovely. how generous of you. the pointer dog and the porch sign are such nice finds at the thrift store.
have to tell you a story about the latest kennel quilt. sent foto to son in tx and his comment was ‘love the horse of a different color in a sea of lava.’ i got to tell him it was really a zebra over a southwest sunset. ah! i loved his description. the angel quilt was made by someone else, then basted, i brought it home and quilted it finally and got it bound.
today i cut more pieces in the 3.5×5.5″ size. now i have 31 of those blocks ready. made six more 9-patch blocks from precut squares. they are slowly stacking up. while watching ncis tonight i cut pieces and put together mary’s pumpkin. now the piece i cut for the border doesn’t go. so it might get a different border and i might actually have a fall wallhanging soon. yeah me. thanks mary.
all the discs and paperwork were delivered to the radiology dept at the hospital. they were excited. i suppose i’ll hear something sometime in the future. i meet with the insurance lady tomorrow since aetna is no longer going to carry my policy after the end of the year. fun stuff. i hate dealing with insurance. then mr ed tells me tonight that his insurance is cancelling also.
happy quilting to all, patti in florida

    1. Helen J (Tx)

Patti, BC is cancelling R’s insurance policy at year end. What is going on? I so dislike shopping for (hopefully) the right coverage.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Patti – so what’s the answer regarding insurance? Ours is still ok but who knows? I hate insurance!

  14. Marie C

  18. Angie from Baltimore

Loved the quilts going to NC. So pretty. Love your porch sign. My husband and I loved going to thrift shops and the Midwest has great ones. We were at John Campbell Folk Scool going to charity shops and we were trying OK I was trying to figure out what my husband was going to wear to this Horty torty wedding. We had checked out his SUIT and I stress SUIT that Moths just fell in love with. So here we at our third thrift shop of the day and I was sitting and shopped out and out of the corner of my Rug Hooker’s eye spies a black cashmere suit coat. Ok not done shopping. I go over yep Cashmere Brooks Brothers Price 10 bucks. Called husband over and it fit perfectly even the sleeves were perfect. Cashier I went. Got home went on eBay found BB black cashmere pants in husband’s size. 15 bucks. SOLD. Bought a cranberry turtle neck from llbean ( 20 bucks) and he looked fantastic and was really comfortable. The picture of him in this outfit is one of my favorite. Not sure if it is the look or the deal that makes it so special. Don’t ever underestimate the woman that loves thrift stores

  19. Jeanie S, Central IL

  22. Ginger S.

We had beautiful weather here in NH today too. We had a cord of wood delivered this morning and I didn’t mind stacking it al all. I’m dragging out that chore, though, as I don’t want to do any phyiscal damage to myself that might interfere with my quilting!!!! Great post today Mary. Beautiful quilts for NC.
