Meet Sarah and Donita! 5-13-26

Here is Sarah –

This is Donita –

I like to name new pets after the people I get them from so Sarah is named for Josh’s mom, Sarah. (Josh is the young man who cleans my barn out every year.). And Donita, a girl, is named for Don, Josh’s dad. Donita was injured early on and is lame – Don has MS and can’t walk well either. So they’re a pair!

I decided I wasn’t too old to get more goats – and I made an agreement with Sarah that if anything happens to me she will come and get the goats and the chickens.

And they meet!

I have been so busy today – I went to book club this morning, then I picked up the goats and tonight I met a cousin and his wife from Phoenix for supper. Now I’m waiting for the Fever game to start. I so wish the Fever coach would let Caitlyn play her game instead of sticking her in the corner. She needs to lead the play from the logo.

We have been talking about plaid shirts and when I started buying them they were $2. I stopped at the thrift store tonight – this is a 100% cotton short sleeved shirt. Check out the price!

I stopped at Larsons while I was waiting to eat and found this printed plaid – see the back? Blank goods.

Linda’s baby hummingbirds
This was outside Becky’s window today!

Looks like the Fever will win this unless they really screw up. I wish Caitlin wouldn’t argue with the refs!!! Sigh.

Good Night, Everybody!

Love your new baby goats & all of the animal pictures on the blog. I never made a shirt quilt because shirts are so darn expensive at our thrift shops.

Des – yes, I can see that – they used to be dirt cheap. Our thrift store is almost the same prices as Hobby lobby,

I’ve been catching up with the last few posts and enjoyed the plaid quilts. I remember matching plaids for folks sewing garments when I was working in fabric stores in the 60’s and 70’s so the comment about the plaid not matching on a blouse brought a chuckle. Then I remembered one plaid I never had the courage to actually sew and wear…anyone for lime green, lemon yellow, tangerine, and aqua? It went to LWR not too long ago!

It will be fun to follow Sarah and Donita as they grow and get into things. You have such a tender heart, Mary. We can all take a lesson from you. Becky’s Mama deer and fawn are so sweet, and I was glad to see Linda’s bluebirds again not to mention all the dogs (lap size and otherwise) and possibly mischievous cats. Thank you all for contributing pictures and comments and to Mary for putting everything together.

PS: Thanks for tip about ordering from Current! I have run out of nice cards and had forgotten about them. Kris

I finally caught up with posts I haven’t read. The princess and the pea. Oh, my! Hazel and Hank are ready for portrait. Keeper joins in too.
Does she know how much we enjoy seeing her fanny?

Great pictures of babies today. They all are so cute.
That shirt looks like a nice piece, a little high priced.
I know I have 2 quilts with plaid fabric…I should dig and find them. After seeing those magnificent quilts in Paducah, I’m so ready for usable, foldable, washable, lovable, snuggle up, doable quilts.

I admit, when a quilter friend told me about your blog, Mary, a year or so ago, I got the address & thought I’d check it out once in a while. I’m hooked! It’s the first thing I look for each morning! I’m a “crazy cat lady” so I always love all the pictures. I just don’t know how you get so darn much done every day! And still find time to quilt and write your blog! I have a card ready to send to Charlotte’s dad.
    Cheers!!

Mary, so glad you decided on getting those young goats! They’re so fun to watch! I remember you had goats when I stopped at your shop in ’07. My husband loved seeing all the farm animals! You can’t take the boy out of the country even though he lives in the city. I’m so thankful my children experienced a little farm life with both of our parents. Great memories for both of them! My daughter who lives in NC would love to have a small farm. Right now she’s raising meat rabbits. Certainly not something I would want to do! I just reminded her that rabbits reproduce rapidly…. Love those tiny Hummingbirds! We have more than enough deer here. The week we moved in here a momma had triplets in my back yard, that was 8 yrs ago. I didn’t know deer ever had more than one or two babies at a time.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – I could not be a producer – meat rabbits? Never. I had rabbits as a kid and yes, they reproduce fast. I run a retirement home – everybody lives here till they die of old age. If they outlive me I now have provided for them. That in itself is a relief to me. Gosh, I wish I had known my blog readers all those years ago but just too many people were here.

      1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, I can’t see her being successful with this as she’s an animal lover, too. I can see her having 200 rabbits & wondering what to do about all these bunnies! She’s already named them!! She’s nursing a tiny kitten that someone dropped off. Poor little thing has a badly infected eye. I’ll keep you posted on this bunny farm. I couldn’t raise meat rabbits either!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – can you remind her that she’s raising them to be killed and EATEN!!!!! OMG! I don’t think she can do this. And if she can, please don’t ever send a picture or tell me.

          1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, knowing my daughter, I don’t think she can do this either! I’m just glad she lives in NC & not here! I don’t think she has thought this through…..as I said I can see her having 200 rabbits as pets in the future!

Another great post Mary. I love your new goats and so happy that you are giving them a home. They are going to love it at your place. Beautiful quilts. The baby birds..humming birds i think…are so cute. i can’t imagine being squished in like that. We have a lot of deer here where we live. They visit almost every early evening. I wish they would bring their babies with them. Same with the turkeys. We have all kinds of them.. The Tom turkeys’ are all puffed up and strutting around. But only once have I seen a Mom with a bunch of tiny babies. They all come back when they are all grown though.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ginger – do you live in a wooded area? Becky also has turkeys. Do you also have coyotes? She and I are worried about that fawn!!!

Chris – I like to be very busy obviously and I don’t go much of anywhere – certainly no vacations. Who would stay here and take care of everybody? I’m probably no busier than my readers – it’s just that I tell you! Haha!!!

I love baby goats!! I follow a homesteader on Facebook in southern Illinois that just had 9 new baby goats born this spring. I always said I wanted goats and chickens, but alas – I have neither and prospects do not look good. lol
May has been a whirlwind around here. Drs appointments, yard work, and I did a talk Tuesday night at the Fort Dodge quilt guild on old quilts and textiles and how to repurpose them. Small guild, about 25-30 but the still have a quilt show every other. Need to make it there in October.
Our Ankeny Quilt Guild sells items at the Winterset Quilt Museum, and I chair that project. Airing of the Quilts is June 6th so need to gather up items to sell.
Leahs class is having an ABC party for the 4 year olds at school today, and her graduation is next Wednesday. I love her little class and they all call me Grandma!
Elliott has 2 more weeks. He ran in there his morning to see if there were new pics of Hazel, There were of course, and he said to tell you Hello Hazel!!
Sewing with my small group Saturday then stopping at the cemetery to put new flowers out for decoration day on my folks grave.
Loving this weather! Hard to stay inside these days. Garden is in and growing, so that is taken care of for now. Just needs water and sun!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diana – wow! And readers think I’m busy – nothing like you! I don’t go to any “groups” and you’ve got several huge jobs involving quilts. I’ll bet those 30 ladies loved your presentation. And I’ll remember to put Hazel on every post – just for Elliot. Did he see the baby goats?

      1. Diana in Des Moines

Yes he saw your post this morning before school.
I haven’t volunteered much because I had the kids all the time. They will both be in school full time this fall and my days will be mine again.

At our Goodwill Monday’s are 99 cent day for one color. Perhaps you’ll find a plaid shirt if you want to start hunting for those!

Sarah and Donita are precious and so lucky to have you as their new Mama Mary! Awesome hummingbird babies and deer 🦌 photos! I have not been able to find any cheap prices on shirts either. I hope Mr. Jack gets a shower of cards. It really touched my heart that he went into the Navy at 15! I guess people were more willing to put their lives on the line for their country back then. He was so brave and I told him so in his card. 🇺🇸❤️

I just love the goats!!! Wish I lived where I could have a bunch of animals — I say that but I can barely keep up with a dog, cat, horse (that’s boarded at a local barn) my house and my yard!!!! HA!

Beautiful quilts — love seeing them. Thank you for sharing with us.

Charlotte – glad to hear the cards have started! I hope your dad has a very special birthday!

Mary — I found rhubarb in the freezer section at one of the groceries near me! Yea! I still haven’t found the recipe for the cake, but I did find a rhubarb/strawberry cobbler that I will try. So far the strawberries have been really good this year.

  14. Suzanne in Massachusetts

Love Jeanine’s strip quilt. I have 2 huge boxes of 2” and 2-1/2” strips to use up (gifted strips!)
I love goats although I’ve only visited with them. Looking forward to goat stories.
Going into Boston today to get my new heart valve checked out. I think it’s working great.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Suzanne – Connie and I really enjoyed Boston!! Good luck with your appt.

  15. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, goets are so funny jumping around,l guess your lame one won’t,the other withMS, has she got multiple sclerosis? I made a small wall hanging with your goat pattern, hope l remember to take a photo of it tomorrow! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – those baby goats videos and so fun – these guys are 3 months old so not likely to be so lively. It’s very very windy today but I’m planning to let them outside this weekend. Please – send the wall hanging!

  16. Judy

Jeanine, This is the type of quilt I have trouble putting together. How do I decide where to place the blocks? My mathematical mind tries to find a pattern.
Mary, you have just added another topic to your blog….the new goats! We will enjoy hearing about them.

  17. Charlotte in No. California

Great pictures today, as always. I just wanted to tell you that my dad got his first card today and he loves the thoughtfulness of the idea of sending cards. Thank you Kathy from New York. You made his day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Charlotte – oh, don’t you just love it? A card can make someone’s day and it’s soooo easy! Thank you, Kathy – you beat all
      The rest of us!!

      1. Kathy in western NY

Charlotte and Mary – I’m glad it arrived so fast when the bills I mail say to allow a week to 10 days. I’ve been ordering boxes of cards from Current catalog as many are BOGO free and much cheaper per card than if I’d gone to the dollar store. Mother’s Day they had another free shipping day so I’m looking forward to using some patriotic styles I ordered. They said free shipping but there was a carrier charge which is something new for me to understand. My whole life lately is about understanding this or that.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I haven’t ordered from Current in years – I’d should start again. The cards themselves don’t really matter – it’s the thought behind the card and I’m sure all the card recipients will agree.

    2. Louverna Tomer

Charlotte. could you please send me an email? Regarding Jack. I wonder if we are related. I’m from West Virginia and Leep is my maiden name.

Oh, Louverna, I hope Charlotte sees your request! You must be related!! That would be so fun! Jan in MA

Are the goats full size? They look so little. Those baby hummingbirds are filling up the nest. When I saw the photo of the doe and fawn it brought back memories of the deer and fawns that visited my mom’s bird feeders every evening. She enjoyed watching them.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – the goats are about 3 months old so they’re not full size but I could not stand to take those tiny goats away from their moms – so I let them all get bigger before I chose.
