I am too busy reading to take time to write a blog post – ha! I’ll get to finish it tomorrow – oh, it’s very good!
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.
I loved a previous book by Hannah – The Nightingale — so I took a chance on her newest novel which takes place in Alaska during the mid 70’s and tells the story of a Vietnam veteran suffering from PTSD and his family who are victims of his domestic abuse. Living “off the land” in a remote area becomes a life threatening situation when his volatile temper cannot be controlled.
This does NOT seem like a story I would like but I have read into the wee hours of the morning just glued to this book.
Thanks for the review. Loved the Nightengale and thought the same thing you did.
Interesting i just ordered the book. Cant wait to read it
I have read all of her books. loved that last one so much, I couln’t pick up another book for about 2 weeks! I have this one, but finishing up another before I dive in, thanks for the recommendation
I am finishing another book before I start this. I love her books. “The Nightingale” was one of her best. You should give us a list of your favorite books sometime.
Just saw a review for The Great Alone. Will have to add it to my list. Thanks for the recommendation. Also, may I suggest A Hundred Small Lessons by Ashley Hay? Simply put, it’s about two mothers from different generations and how their lives intertwine. The book takes some surprising twists and turns, but I think you might like it.
I loved the Nightingale and couldn’t put it down so I’ve requested this book from my local library. I’m number 6 for their patrons but also am number 31 for requests for it. Thanks for your endorsement for this novel.
Thanks for the recommendation, I am reading an American marriage that Oprah’s Book Club recommended it is very good.
Hannah is an acclaimed writer.. just her name tempts me to read it.. but violence and anger are too much for me… I would be interested in anything you might write about your country life..or maybe you have .. your blogs are always welcome… sane .. sensible… caring. One of my all-time favorite books is Francesca’s Kitchen… an Italian-American grandma..who out of boredom..secretly ..from her own kids who all. live out of state…hires out to a single mom to watch her two school kids until Mom gets home… the resentment of the kids gradually fade when Francesca supplies them with home made spaghetti and upside down cake when they come home… but requiring them to clean their rooms, etc.. Don’t read this when hungry. How I wish Peter Pizzelli would write again.
Changing the subject – please help me

I was wondering about you. I thought maybe the weather was keeping you off the computer. lol. Forgot you bought all those books. Paula in KY
Always fun to read a good book
I liked the Nightingale too.
You feel you are right where the action is.

Just got the book but have to finish another one of hers first! I’ve seen post where some are not liking her new one so glad to hear you’re liking it. I have a lot of her others and have never been disappointed. Have a good weekend!
Glad you are enjoying the book. I have it in my reading wish list. I just finished reading “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.” It was marvelous, and I think you would like it if you haven’t read it already.
I loooove your postings on your blog. Love the pix of your farm and animals and envy your rural life. Now I am using your book picks as my go to source for a new book. Keep up everything you’re posting!!
Her books are all fabulous! She is truly talented–enjoy!
I read The Nightengale too – couldn’t put it down. Looks like I should read this one too.
I love it when I can immerse myself in a good book. The only requirement is that it captures my attention in the first chapter. Then I too, become one with the chacters!
I just added this book to my Audio library. Can’t wait!!
Just bought this book and can’t wait to start reading. Love Kristin Hannah books…The Nightingale, and Winter Garden I read recently. I think Firefire Lane was the first of her books I read. I still need to go back and read some of her earlier books.
Thanks for the heads up on the book. I love reading Kristin Hannah. Thanks to your recommendation I am now #143 (out of 15 copies) on the list for the ebook at my library. Hope I get it before Christmas!
How far along are you on your book by now? I am reading a Jane Kirkpatrick book called A Flickering Light. I have loved every and all Jane Kirkpatrick books that I have read and that’s quite a few. She tends to write them in series, but not always. And, they are usually about people and places from our past. She does extensive research about the historical facts.
I must try a Kristin Hannah novel. Maybe I already have read one but I am terrible at remember the names of books. I read constantly, but only in bed for awhile every night. When I end one, I start another. I kind of panic if I don’t have a new one.
Whatever would we do without books?
Sue – I have 38 pages left and have my next book chosen – I cannot be without a book and if it leaves my bedside table, I know it’s a good one because it comes to breakfast with me!
Know what you mean, except I slip back in when getting dressed and sit on the side of the bed and read.
I have this on my holds list at the library………. now after reading how much you liked it I am even more anxious.
I plan to read this one after I finish my book club book for the month. I suggest that you go back and read all of Kristen Hannah’s books as I haven’t found one that hasn’t pulled me in and kept me reading late into the night.
Thank you for the book recommendations. I am writing the titles for when I go to the library.
