Not a good day, 11-27-24

I’m going home tomorrow morning and my terrible day is all about nurses. It just doesn’t make sense for me to tell this story while I’m still here so Becky will be here at 9 to pick me up. When I get home and feel safe, I’ll post about my bad day.

So sorry you had a rotten day yesterday. Today is a new day and a perfect day to be going home!! May you and Rick enjoy Thanksgiving in your home and let the healing really begin now that you are surrounded by those who love you…people and animals. God bless.

It’s great to hear you get to leave the hospital, they normally try to move as many people out for holidays so that means you can’t go back to your normal, you need to rest and heal completely. You surely don’t want to do anything that puts you back in the hospital. I’m so sorry you had a bad stay, that doesn’t help with healing. Hospitals never have enough nurses, that would cut into their profits! and the poor nurses have more patients than they can handle. So get home, Nurses Hazel and Keeper will make you feel better, just keep them away from your tummy.

Happy thanksgiving. So glad Becky is coming to get you. Take it easy and recover .
I feel bad you had bad nurses. I thought care was their job!
Have a safe and enjoyable trip home.

I am so sorry to hear that……. You’re going home to the best place to heal….. sadly, when I had my surgery if my mom and son hadn’t been at the hospital every day I’m not sure what I would have done.

Travel safe to home. Be welcomed by all the animals…. enjoy Thanksgiving day in your own chair, bed and bathroom.

Happy Thanksgiving🦃So happy you are able to be coming home! Hospitals do not compare to Home Sweet Home!

Mary – I was so hoping you could be home for Thanksgiving and you will!!! You and Becky have always had each other’s back so I’m not surprised she’s picking you up this morning. Have a safe trip on your travels home.
Don’t forget we’re only a phone call away if you need anything. I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

I’m so sorry you had a bad experience. Thank God for Becky. You have been through a lot. I pray you can rest and recover. I even worry about the stairs for you. This too shall pass. God speed on your trip home.

So good to hear you’ll get home…and spend turkey day with those you love. You were missed…so expect jubilation!
I am saddened to think your nurses were the cause of discomfort, or made you feel unsafe…that’s not the way you should be treated. Get home,, in your own bed,, and breath a nice deep breath…I’m happy you’re getting out of there to start recovery. We should all have a Becky… relax, and enjoy everything!

Oh Mary, the fact that you didn’t feel safe at the hospital is very scary. I hope they get an earful.
So glad you are going home. I do hope you will have some help for a bit of time while your body is healing.
Part of me thinks you’ll be out feeding the chickens though soon.
    Take care and heal!

Good news that you are going home and that Becky is coming to get you! You’re nearly there Mary!

what a great thanksgiving. being able to go home. they are always so slow on releasing folks so try to be patience for just a bit longer. soon you will be in the car and on the way home. maybe you can turn the radio on to a fav station and sing at the top of your lungs on the way home. enjoy the freedom. you have earned it and deserve it. now you will have to be the one in charge of making sure you take care of yourself and allow your body the time it needs to heal. it has been through major stress. it takes time. that part is not fun but is part of the program. when you feel yourself getting a tiny bit tired, stop! and rest! you will be back to yourself in no time if you allow it. maybe you can sit and dream up quilts or plans for something else. maybe sit in your sewing area and take in all your treasures. sometimes i find that very relaxing and realize that i have plenty to occupy myself when i’m ready.
i’m so glad they were able to get the entire tumor. now just scans periodically and you’ll be home free. God is truly amazing and walking your path with you. hugs and blessings, patti in florida

Thank you, Becky, for getting Mary home so she can recover and on Thanksgiving no less, what a true friend. I recall the days when we had candy stripers and LPN in hospitals, now we expect RN to do it all and they aren’t adding any staff for those unfilled slots. It’s so sad. I know it comes down to money, but it also causes patients to relapse and return to the hospital. Safe trip home and be gentle with yourself.

Yaaay! So glad you are going home. No place like home. You have received a lot of good advice above, so I will just say “ditto!”

  14. Jeanie S, Central IL

I have nothing new to add; everyone before me said it just right. I am so glad you will be home, where you will be safe. With that huge incision, you have lots of healing to accomplish. Your fur babies will be so happy. Take Care & Hugs, Mary 🥰

Beginning to think Mayo isn’t living up to its reputation. Between what you have gone through, Rick’s issues, Jo’s difficulties getting answers, and a friend of mine’s experience seems like they’re slipping. So sorry you’ve had such a horrible experience but hope you’ll be home tomorrow.

  16. Helen

It’s ths same story everywhere with the nurses. Nobody WANTS to work. They’d rather be at home like all the other non-workers. I had the same issue. If my daughter and husband had not been there for me I don’t know how I would have survived my hospital stay. A very sad state of affairs. The problem is they can’t find good workers. And the “nurses” themselves are not taught “patient care.” I have 3 in my family and they told me that they are taught how to “chart” their patients, not care for them because that’s what the insurance companies require….charting! It’s a terrible situation and I don’t know if there is any answer to it.
Glad you are going home. Now you can rest, eat and be attended to by loved ones. God bless you dear girl!

So glad you are going home tomorrow and wishing you a happy Thanksgiving. I am disturbed to read that you feel unsafe in the hospital. I hope that you will be able to get the rest you will need to further recuperate and not be too hasty to get back into chores. Will you be able to follow up with a local doctor or will you have to make the long trip back to that hospital for other appointments? Will the 3 month scans be done there or locally? Best wishes, we are thinking about you and sending prayers for your speedy recovery.

  18. Gail in Ohio

Glad you are going to go home – please don’t overdo!!! SO sorry you have had issues while in the hospital – hope things look up from here on out. (Of course, home is ALWAYS better!)

  19. Sharon F

Mary, I’m so sorry you didn’t receive good nursing care. You will be more comfortable once you get home. But please, please take it easy and be careful when Hazel and Keeper want to greet you enthusiastically. You have told us many stories that illustrate your strong work ethic that you were raised with. So remember that healing is very hard work for your body, knitting all those muscles back together and regaining your strength. Even though you might think you’re being lazy – you are really working very hard doing very important work getting well. Take it easy! Please!

  20. Sue H

YIPPEE! Going home tomorrow is great news. So sorry about the care you didn’t receive. Sounds like the care my Dad didn’t receive twice while he was in the hospital too. It’s just an awful state of affairs in the hospitals. When we are at our most vulnerable, we deserve the utmost care & kindness. Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are actually released before noon. Sometimes that part is awfully slow too.

  21. Linda K

So sorry Mary for all they have put you through. It’s sad that the bad ones tarnish it for the good ones. At least you are capable of knowing what was bad. Take it slow when you’re home. You have got to think of yourself..Prayers and blessings on you as you recover .

  22. Jayce

Staffing and training have gone downhill.. you almost need a friend or relative there all the time to advocate for you!!! Glad you’re getting home 👍🏻

  23. Ann in PA

Mary, It’s disheartening to know that your nurses weren’t doing their job. I’m so glad you will be spending Thanksgiving surrounded by your loved ones. Those furry family members will be so happy to see you. No matter how tempting, don’t overdo it; let Rick and others spoil you.. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving ! Sending hugs & prayers for comfort and healing. 🦃🧡🙏🏻

I’m so glad you have improved enough to go home. As a retired RN, I am probably more critical of nurses. My husband was in and out of the hospital for surgeries and a month long stay for COVID in 2020-2022. There were some good but probably more mediocre. I remember him coming back from surgery and the nurse not looking at his surgical dressing. And when he was in icu isolation (and I wasn’t allowed to visit) he was transferred to a intermediate care hospital and arrived with his tongue coated – I don’t think they had given him oral care during the 10 days in the hospital. I had asked the nurse about if he had had a stroke because his speech on the phone was slurring. Once his mouth and tongue were clean his speech was clear again. You definitely can tell which nurses truly have the calling and which don’t.

I can almost predict what you are going to write. I was in the hospital for three weeks with my cancer surgery and the nurses almost killed me. I am not kidding. My friend had to come every day and write down names times and what they did. It was unbelievable. As soon as I got out, I changed doctors and hospitals. I will never ever go to Ascension again. I did make a report with names, dates and all the issues, but I highly doubt anything happened. I’m glad you’re getting to go home.

Jean Elliott – I remember your cancer surgery and am still so impressed that you handled it all so well. I’ve only been here 10 days but I’ve been alone for all of it.

      1. Jean Elliott

It’s terrible to be alone at a time like this. I’m glad you’re going home. Even though you won’t have care right at your fingertips, I think you will feel better. As far as I know, the doctors in Garner seem to be responsive. At least they were with my stepmother before she died. I hope you recover well at home. Stay strong!

  26. Dianne

Mary. So sad to hear this, they just get that almighty attitude!! Rick, Hazel and Keeper will be so excited to see you. Take care.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving, even though you probably won’t be eating much.

  27. Kathy in western NY

Home sweet home. No place like it. Hoping for rest in your own bed . A special thanks to Becky for taking time on Thanksgiving to come pick you up.
