Dear Mary, reading through the comments on this particular post showed me that “we” the readers are doing a lot of commenting back and forth to each other, not just to you! This, to me, is one of the wonderful aspects/results of sharing on a blog. Especially if the blog owner allows it, like you do!!
i really enjoyed the fall colors on the pineapple quilt that was hung up on the fabric stack rack!! It seemed like it already had borders on it!

RuthW – and my job is done! This is what I was hoping for – striving for! Creating a group of like-minded friends who all enjoy the same things as me – thank you!! Keep chatting with each other – I love it!

Beautiful pictures today! I don’t do much seasonal decorating for fall, but I enjoy seeing the creativity of those who do. Patti’s quilts are lovely too, especially the pineapple quilt.

I’m at my guild’s fall retreat this week. It’s a “sleep at home” retreat. We have a large room available all day, but go home at night. It seems to work better than overnight retreats for many people in the guild. I’m hoping to finish the top for a baby quilt, but today’s progress (lack thereof) indicates that’s too ambitious.

hi everyone. want to comment on this blog entry before i look at the next one. i had to visit to local emergency room in the wee hours of sunday morning and just got back a couple hours ago. nothing drastic just no strength, stamina and had a harder time breathing. home now. small issue with the heart and lungs. all okay now. just finished reading this entry.
thanks for all the comments on my quilt tops. the pineapple blossom pattern is at http://www.quiltville.com under free patterns i had fun with this quilt. did you notice there were two pieces that have’tweetie pie’ of cartoon fame? there are also cats, pumpkins, leaves, novelties (a bad habit i have as i’ve never seen one i don’t like). it was really very easy to put together and pull pieces. the only thing i really thought about what using the yellow (lots of them) for the centers and then the reds (lots of them) for the sashings. i would make a few one day and then later i’d make another small batch, sometimes a large batch and suddenly there are enough for a quilt. the potato chip tops can be used with various sizes. there’s a larger one which may be in the next batch of photos. rectangle checkers is all from scraps except the background. the fabric on the side, a view of portofino, is going to be the back.
i loved the expression of ‘curated abundance’ – that is what my fabric and quilting items are. great expression. that singer treadle is marvelous. did you all see the bandaid on it??? pat in iowa city, i love your quilts and that rug is fantastic. i don’t know how to crochet. teresa in indiana, that quilt is definitely a work of love. from your aunt and you to give to your cousin.
thanks to all of you for sharing your photos and to mary for making it possible for us to do so. fall is the most fabulous time of year. the colors are so wonderful and i live in florida where trees rarely change leaf color. thanks again. patti in florida off to read the most recent blog statement

Oh, Patti, you have certainly had your challenges! And yet you keep on keepin’ on. You are an inspiration to all of us. Best wishes for improving health.

Patti – I’m glad you’re back home and ready to start in again on all your wonderful quilts. You put me to shame!

      1. patti

no, no, no. no shame to anyone. we all do what we can do or what we are able to do. i believe that we all have a mission in life. mine is to keep on being positive and keep on fighting. as my sister says, you will die fighting. and why not?? why would i give up? what’s the fun in that? mary, you keep your grass growing and giving you time to mow, which you love. your love of dogs gives them more chances. you play the piano at your church. i think we all give back in different ways. maybe that is why i learned to quilt. maybe God knew i’d be homebound and i would need to know how to do this for both my sanity and to give to others. whatever i can do for others is good. it is also an inspiration to others. that is why i used to go to guilt shows and museums all the time. for inspiration. to spread the appreciation and love of quilting. even the nurses noticed in the hospital because i was remarking on the colors of the hangings/paintings in the hospital hallways. i’ll send a new photo of my visit to the hospital. you’ll love it. patti in florida (i just heard on tv. the only way to keep light in the world is to pass it on.) maybe i should be smart enough to pull all these thoughts and put them in a random book. probably more discipline than i have.

  4. Pat in AZ

Pat in Iowa City, I really really like your blue quilt!
I am so enjoying all of the fall decor, gardens and the quilts. They are all so beautiful. Where I live we don’t really get a fall so I have to live vicariously through the photos everyone shares. Thank you all for sharing and Mary for coordinating it all.
Pat in AZ where it’s been over 100 every day since May 27th

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat in AZ – I really don’t know how anybody can stand that extreme heat for so long – I couldn’t live there. Happy you can live vicariously through the rest of us during the fall!

      1. Pat in AZ

Mary. I also don’t know how you can handle the minus temperature you get in the winter. I guess we all just adapt to the situation we find ourselves in. BTW, Arizona was NOT my choice of places to retire. I’d rather put up with the heat for 4 or 5 months out of the year than a crabassed husband for 7 or 8 months out of the year because of the rain. Lol

          1. Pat in AZ

We were living in western Washington not far from Puget Sound. Before that we lived in western Oregon in the Willamette Valley. Both places were about an hour from the ocean to the west and an hour to the Cascade mountains to the east so any weather that came in had a bad habit of just stalling out right over us. If it wasn’t raining it was overcast or foggy. We would get more rain in a month there than we get all year in Arizona. To me it’s just 6 of one, half dozen of another. Hsha

          2. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat – I have a friend who lived in that area some years ago and always wants to move back there because of all those overcast drizzly days. Now she lives in Iowa where the sun shines – silly girl.

  5. Beryl BC

The pictures are great. I like the pineapple blossom quilt; I’ve thought of making one so I guess I should start. I guess fall arrives on Sunday, but it is already here. We’ve been traveling and saw many bean fields being harvested on our way home.

  6. Teresa from Port Coquitlam,BC

The fall decorating and quilt show is beautiful. I started fall decorating on Friday then was away for the weekend so back at it today. Will send a picture when done.

  7. Donna A Wyatt

Enjoyed each and every picture! Fall is also my favorite time of the year, spring is a close second. I have been down sizing my stash as well, I think my house feels better with alot of the clutter gone, too! I have 4-5 totes full of flannel and plan to give it to a local church that makes baby quilts. It feels good to get it out of the house. Don’t worry, I have lots more totes with nice quilting fabric.! I have 6-7 quilts that need binding for gifts for Christmas I really should be working on that project but its fun to look at all the pretty things people make. I’ll have to live as long as Noah to get all the projects finished!

    Have a wonderful week ~

Such beautiful pictures! Very artistic people, I’m jealous. Near us is a somewhat thrift store where we donate items which are sold for a super reasonable price. The profits all go to the needy in the form of maybe paying a utility bill, or partial rent, or maybe a gift card for some gas. Money is never given but they sure do a lot of good. This is where I donate anything that is still good. Of course, after donating, I have to shop. Recently, I found a pretty dish, when I picked it up, I realized it was cut glass (for $18.00). I brought it up to the counter and told the clerk what it was and that it was worth much more. She checked it out, came back and said the price stays. Of course, it came home with me. That was a ‘feel good’ day. They only want seasonal items so I will be going through coats and jackets for winter and make another trip soon. It’s pretty hard to think that way as the temperatures stay in the 80’s.

    1. patti

janet, i love the idea of this thrift shop. i would feel good donating to them. of course, like you, i would probably bring home something i couldn’t resist. thanks for sharing. patti in florida.

Mary–Love the Fall pictures–one of my favorite seasons (hope it lasts a while this year). The photos are spectacular!! I have an old Singer sewing machine similar to the one in the photo–love how she displayed it!
I look forward to your news every day and Thank You so much for sharing.

  10. Cindy K

Pictures are amazing-loved them all. We’re picking corn now so not much time for anything else. And I agree that the prices in the thrift stores are getting ridiculous. Goodwill prices for clothing here is crazy-rarely even look through them anymore.

    1. Susan in AL

In our area, Goodwill isn’t fun any longer. Most of the kinds of “treasures” that we used to find are now ending up on their online auction site; there they sell for silly high prices, and then the shipping charges are outrageous. We have found a couple of small, local charity shops to visit, although some are copying online prices and very overpriced. And technology was supposed to make life easier … 🙂

  11. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

The pictures of homes decorated for fall are fabulous. Thanks for sharing, I don’t decorate for anything anymore because I can’t carry things up and down the basement stairs without suffering with my back and everything is stored in the basement. And I no longer care to put things out then put them away, I’ve either gotten terrible lazy or just have way too much else to do.

I am in love with the postage stamp quilt! I can’t imagine how long that took and it looks big.

Enjoy your day everyone! Make yourself happy!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – I almost agree – hanging quilts every season is a chore – with a ladder and staple gun – and I love it when it’s done but…..what will happen if I’m the one who falls off the ladder?

  12. Barbara in New York

Love all the Fall pictures. Has anyone worked with Kantha Fabric? My daughter sent me several pounds of it from India for a Birthday gift. Having a blast picking out pieces to assemble a quilt. Pairing it with multicolored embroidered African animals I ordered from a lady in Estero Florida. It will be a Christmas gift for a dear friend who is vacationing in Africa for several weeks this fall.

    1. patti

i think i would definitely check a few of these fabrics from india for ‘bleeding’. my experience is that it happens alot. maybe it won’t happen to you. better safe than sorry at the end. patti in florida

don’t be jealous, jan. you can come help me use it up. i can’t sew fast enough. especially since i keep using scraps and half yard or smaller cuts. patti in florida

  13. Jan Hebert in MA

Beautiful photos today! They really make me want to get out all of my fall decor. Not that there’s a lot but I need to get it out before this season passes by! Theresa, I can’t believe that postage stamp quilt is hand pieced! That is amazing! And I love Patti’s Pineapple Blossom quilt. I love all of the quilts! And the schnauzers! So spiffy! And is that a treadle 201? I really hope to find a 201 to add to my “collection”! I know I should be downsizing but I really love old sewing machines! Enjoy the week ladies! Jan in MA

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jan H – downsizing won’t make me happier – I love my stuff and also love looking for it.

      1. Susan in AL

^ Same here! One of my boys just shakes his head and tells me that I should really think about downsizing. I just smile and tell him that it doesn’t need downsizing — it is Curated Abundance that I enjoy.

  14. Sue in PA

Wow, the pictures today are stunning! Love Teresa’s quilt! What a nice thing to do for your cousin. Can’t imagine your aunt hand piecing all those little squares into such a beautiful quilt.
I am in the process of continuing my Swedish Death Cleaning, working on my master bedroom closet right now and really being brutal with myself. I have held on to things for way too long and it is time for them to GO! If I haven’t used or worn an item for a year or more, it needs to go. We have a very nice thrift store that gives all its profits to children’s charities, so I like giving things to them rather than trying to sell to consignment stores or online or yard sales, which is a lot of work. It’s a good feeling to have less and my children will not be as burdened with my things when I am gone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – I have so much room that I tend to just keep everything – ugh. The thrift store I shop at has turned into a retail store almost – things are higher priced than when originally purchased. I have to find another one and take them a load. Or have a sale here and I can’t stand that thought.

      1. Connie R. In Wis.

I agree that the thrift store prices are getting high. You would think they would rather price things reasonably as to move them instead of high priced and then restrict donations because they are out of room because items are not selling. The Goodwill store I go to has so many clothes on the racks that it’s difficult to move hangers to see the clothes. Probably because most of their t shirts are $6.99 and higher. I love thrift shops but, I’m looking for a bargain.

        1. Cindy Sabinske

I agree on prices too high at thrift shops! I am usually shocked at the prices for items you show us, Mary, as around here nothing is a bargain. Those that price items think it is an estate sale or something, and those types of sales are typically too high. I agree, they should be priced so someone would snap them up right away. Everything is donated, so there is no reason to add to the price. At the nearby goodwill and thrift shop they are full of things, just think if the items were half the price, people would buy more, it doesn’t help anyone’s cause if the stuff sits around. There will be more donations, so mark items lower. This is my opinion, anyway. I loved the photos today, makes me think ai should get my fall decorations out. Mine are in the storage area in our garage up high in the rafters area, I shall be brave.

  15. Joyce from NY

Beautiful pictures, fall is my favorite time of the year. The weather has been more like summer the last week. Thank you for your pictures!!

  16. Kathy in western NY

What gorgeous pictures you’ve all shared. The decorations are nice to admire as I need to get busy doing mine. With these warm temperatures I haven’t been in the mood to think fall as summer is lingering on here. Last year I bought pumpkins and by Halloween they were mush all over my porch and steps from the heat. I’m glad Patti shared a potato chip quilt with us as I wondered what they looked like. I don’t do a lot of searching on the internet for many reasons so seeing it “in person” sewn up gives me a way to use some scraps differently. Everyone has been so kind to send pictures of fall and it’s very much appreciated.

  17. Janet in WV

Thanks for the fall decorating photos. What a great way to start my Monday. And Pat in Iowa City, your quilt is beautiful!

  18. Meredith in Cincinnati

Wow! Love Fall, and these pictures are great. Teresa, that is one beautiful quilt! Still hot this week in Ohio, and we need rain SO badly.

  19. Connie R. In Wis.

What a treat to see all the amazing fall pictures. From the pumpkins, quilts, and decorations, everything is beautiful. I especially love the braided rug as well as the bowl of gourds with the quilt as a backdrop. And, Patti, you’ve outdone yourself with that gorgeous pineapple blossom quilt!! Thanks, everyone, for sharing.
The canned tomatoes especially reminds me of fall as well as the smell of dill when canning pickles. Seems to be a lost art. Our garden didn’t do well this year but, sounds like more unseasonably warm weather will continue for the next couple weeks so, we may get a few more cucumbers. The leaves are just starting to turn color and , by the end of the month, should be at peak. I love this time of the year but it goes by so fast.

  20. Brenda in Georgia

This is a beautiful display of photos! I am just realizing today how much more vibrant the photos are when viewing on the blog rather than the email! Thank you so much!

  21. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

A quilt show and a fall spread. All beautiful.
Patti, your pineapple quilt amazes me. And I love the purple and green potato chip quilt, too. Beautiful in such a simple design.
The simple broken dishes quilt hiding under the floral arrangements with the hurricane lamp? is a nice simple accent.
All you ladies have outdone yourselves. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Bea knight

Thanks Chris, but I just quilted it. It was given to me many years ago by my Aunt. I’m regifting it back to my cousin next week. The workmanship in this top amazed me. It was hand pieced!
