Well, I stayed up very late to watch Iowa State but they lost to the better team, Ohio State. I’ve always loved these games because you just cannot predict the winners and it’s those higher seeds that can surprise everybody.
It does not diminish my interest in these games – I love them all! I cleaned and even washed some windows this morning but now I’m ready to quit cleaning and start putting stuff away in the quilt shop. Our weather went from just crappy to such nice days, it’s hard to believe. It’s like someone turned the key and winter was over. A year ago today we got 17″ of snow but today is 53, sunny and not much wind.
Just a review of available patterns:

The parade of Harveys has been very fun for us – thanks to all of you who made a Harvey and sent a picture.
A quick note about cutting the scraps. I have a huge collection of fabric and can always find something on the shelf to use for a bigger square or an appliqué piece. But I do understand that some of you prefer to keep the scraps as they are. Whatever floats your boat! I know Bonnie Hunter is going to be at the Minnesota Quilt Show in Rochester this summer – I think Reed and I should go look at the quilts. Anybody else going? We could all meet up for lunch or a cup of coffee! We have a wedding on the 14th – really, a Friday? It’s Rick’s friends so he’d better clarify that date.
Not much that’s new – just a regular Saturday. How about you?
I was surprised my nephew is getting married on a Friday, it’s all about the venue! Also can be overall less expensive on days other than Saturday. Personally, I’ve caved to the Harvey parades and all their cuteness. My order is on the way!
Roxanne – if you can’t beat em, join em! You won’t be sorry!
Where do we go to purchase the patterns?
Sharon Z – send your check to Country Threads, address under photo and be sure to specify what you’re ordering. An address label for us to use is very helpful!
I will be at the Minnesota Quilt Show here in Rochester, would love to join you, and any others as well, for lunch. What fun! The Iowa Women’s Team is doing well. Their star player, Megan Gustafson, is from my home town in Northern Wisconsin – Port Wing. Very tiny town. She is sure great! So nice to have this nice weather. We took a ride and went to see what ducks and geese were around. We had a surprise to see a large flock of Tundra Swans in the Wabasha area. Almost have all of the Bullseye quilt top put together. Sure took me a long time. I’m liking it. Thinking about cutting a number of my scraps into those strips, what a great idea!
Just finished teaching a Canadian friend the things she needs to know about quilting. I used visuals and will send her with her sample, lists of blogs (yes, Connie and you are #1), 3 of the best quilting magazines, the little yardage book for half square and quarter square triangles. She is a former decorator so she knows her machine but has to buy a walking foot and quarter inch foot for it. She was a quick learner. I had a list of must halves for her, discussed batthings and ways to press, etc. Will miss her a lot.
Deb, which is more fun, teaching or learning?
lMy friend’s child got married on a Sunday afternoon. Just wedding, dinner, cake and no dance, lots of visiting, they loved it. And it was a place they wanted to be but couldn’t get a Friday or Saturday for a couple years. It’s supposed to rain on Saturday night, into Sunday here, south of you, so tomorrow won’t be so nice. But hopefully no more snow.
Dreary gray skies here today with a chance of rain or snow. A friend called last night and asked if I had any interest in going to her cabin in Estes Park today for a work day. Sure! I’m all in! They had some frozen pipes and water damage but she’s got company coming and needed to go put rooms back together and make beds. So off we went this morning. It was fun to have a project. We shoveled, put together a log bed, moved furniture, made beds, and now we’re home again. Got to see some big horn sheep in Big Thompson Canyon and elk in Loveland (that’s really low elevation for them!!!). And now I’ve got the afternoon free to sew!
Diane-
Where do I find a friend like you??!! You’re a keeper!!
Thank you, Patricia!!
😀
Drove to Garner this morning to visit Junkin Gal then on to Mason City to order an Amish toy box for our grandsons first Birthday present. Honked, waved, and remembered our many stops at Country Threads 💕
My brother in law got married last July on a Friday in Bend, OR. I very seldom can be convinced to leave alaska in the summer but this worked out great! The next day was the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show!! It was hot but a great show!
First, Thank you, I thought it was Sunday all day! So glad I still have another day before Monday.
All the Harvey’s are so cute! I especially love the little ones! Thanks for sharing 😺
This comment is totally unrelated to your comments but I wanted to share. I like to travel and most of the time I’m able to take my dog with me but sometimes it’s just not feasible to take her with me. I have a quilting friend who comes and stays at my house. She loves animals and takes excellent care of my dog, cat, and bunny. She and her husband have a large farm and her daughter and grandchildren live close to her so she is always super busy. When she comes and stays at my house we call it “quilt camp”. She brings lots of quilting projects and sews to her hearts content without any interruptions. She loves it because it’s quiet and peaceful and because she can get so much sewing done. I love it because she takes such good care of my pets. It’s a win/win situation for both of us.
Nice! Great to have a house/pet sitter who is happy to do both while happily sewing!
Pamela in Missouri – you have a good friend in that gal! I’ll bet she thinks it’s vacation! What kind of dog do you have? When you travel is it by car so the dog can go along?
Thanks for the Harvey pictures. They are so cute!
Spring finally feels like it has arrived in central Indiana. My heart goes out to those dealing with the terrible flooding in the central part of the country. I don’t imagine what they are going through.
Thank you for your blog and all you news.
Mary, do you have any idea why some of us are seeing so few ads? I used to see four or five but now I rarely see more than two. I try to click on the ones that pop up but I would do more.
Ellie – I still ask but get no good answer. Thanks for being diligent on the ads that do appear!
When is the Minnesota Quilt Show? I’d love to go! Today is our 34th anniversary. Not much celebrating, because my husband’s back is bothering him considerably. We’re watching the games too. I just got back from a Sierra Club meeting. They are interested in helping to stop the building of a Costco chicken factory farm about a mile from our house. 190,000 chickens in four industrial “barns”, will only have an 8 x 10 inch size space before being sent for “processing” after 6 weeks. This will happen 6 times a year. Dead chickens will be composted outside under a roof, but no sides. This is just so wrong on so many levels.
It was 6 months ago yesterday, that my 94-year-old mother died. She did what she loved up until her fall–sewing.
On a brighter note, I got my order of books from Martingale’s warehouse sale that you told us about in one of your posts, Mary! I saved $172.91! I told my husband I could take him out to dinner! But he’s not up for it.
The only book I didn’t get on sale, was Nancy Zieman’s “The Flying Sewing Machine” children’s book. I love it! My mother had requested I decorate her casket and I found some flying black sewing machine fabric, with clouds, to use as the outer border on a cross-stitch piece I’d done for her 90th birthday. It has a black sewing machine on it, a sewing doll, a cat, sewing notions, etc. that says: “Love Sews a Bond That Can Never Tear”.
This ended up being a long comment, but it’s nice to share with my sewing/quilting family. Thanks, Pam
Pam Wakeman – MN Quilters is June 13,14,15 in Rochester. I hope somebody stops a chicken plant, a CAFO should be outlawed! CAFO stands for Confined Animal Feeding Operation in case someone doesn’t know. 8×10 “ is inhumane! And yes, wrong on so many levels – the people who have to live in the area with the millions of flies is another.
Pam Wakeman – meant to say your comment is never too long!
I’m wondering about the baby chicks that hatched a month or so ago. When do you find out if any of them are roosters? We still have a LOT of wind but the sun is out and it isn’t bitter cold. Spring must be close. The ski resort closes after this weekend. There’s still a lot of trails open and a lot of snow for this late.
I was married on Friday, August 27, 1973. It was hard to get a Saturday night wedding date in the summer (I was a teacher, best time of year to wed!), or at least during nice weather, as Buffalo gets so little nice weather.
So our church offered Friday night weddings and I thought, great. My sister and my cousin both got married in January and that was no fun… wind and snow and freezing cold temps, no thank you.
My husband and I got married on a Wednesday: marriages on week days are very common in Europe.
In the Netherlands, marrying on a Monday before noon is significantly cheaper than marrying at any other time (fee for marriage licence etc.), sometimes the license etc is free on monday mornings early. This means that having not much money is no impediment to getting legally married, so Monday morning is a popular time for young couples with little cash or couples who don’t want to make a big thing out of regularising their relationship.
Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts – so interesting, Fiona! Thank you! I learn soooooo much from you Readers!
Mary–I really enjoy your blog!! What happened in your quilt shop with water getting in?? I must have missed that post but saw where you were having to burn some things–Oh dear!! Your animal and plant pictures are great also!
Barb K – our storm during the “ bomb cyclone” was steady rain for about two days and the ground was frozen so the water could not get away. Snow was high against the building which forced the rainwater over the foundation and right into the building. It was running over the sidewalk and in the front door as well. All the rugs, etc are now dry but I doubt I’ll ever put anything on the floor in the back room ever again! Yikes!
Mary, I too only had 2 ads to click on, so I just kept refreshing my page!
I met up with my sister today and we went to a sewing festival. Such fun to be with her. Our weather is up and down. Snowed last night…mid 60’s this week.
My two very best friends from Gowrie and Traer merged at Aplington and had a fantastic lunch at the Peppercorn Panty then we traveled to Conrad to check out Hen and Chick Studio quilt shop. It was a fantastic friend’s day! Two of us are retired Family and Consumer Sciences teachers and one is still teaching. Upon going home to Charles City I stopped at Prairie Rose Fabrics quilt shop and luckily found a new Iowa State fabric (even though they unfortunately lost last night).
It would be so much fun to merge at the Minnesota Quilt Show in Rochester for a cup of coffee, see the quilts and Bonnie Hunter!
I also am like one of your readers and honk and wave when I go past your place as I’m going to Britt. You and Connie’s shop will always be my favorite!!
Julie – thanks for the honk – every time I hear a honk from the highway, I wonder if it’s a quilting friend! Your day sounded very fun! We will keep MN Quilters on the back burner – that sounds fun, too!
Watching ballgames, cut up another container of scraps and again it felt so good. Then started on another container. Finished binding on Harvey and label and hanger. Mary I will email my pic of him to your email address. I just love this Harvey guy!!! Are there other patterns for holidays, etc in this size? I really enjoyed making him and had all the fabrics in my stash. Glad it is warming up! Paula in KY
Paula Philpot – I will do some digging to see if we have any other similar patterns – most were full size for the outdoor hanger. Hmmmm…… I wonder. Keep up the good work on your scraps!
I have a snowman a friend made me, but I think it’s a Country Yhreads pattern?? I will look in my “ stuff” because I have many of her books and patterns from Country Threads as well as my own.
Diane in Central Ohio – we did quite a number of door banners but I think what’s so appealing about Harvey is that he’s little and we have some work to do if we want something else that size. Connie and I might have to go back to work – haha!
Can you make the wonderful Halloween door hangings smaller — Count Dracula, the witch, Frankenstein… a few just off the top of my head?
Betty Klosterman – only if we want to work very hard! And I’m not really sure we do at this point. We will see.
I remember years ago you all did several that showed up in the Goat Gazette similar size of Harvey and it looks really good on the back my door hope you find some. Have you checked your orange peelings lately in the vinegar. Mine is a little passed the two weeks but I am waiting to see how yours comes out. lol Paula
Paula – the jar looks so pretty that I hate to take the orange peels out! Maybe I like it better as is instead of an air freshener spray. What do you think?
I haven’t opened mine…I was waiting for you to open yours. lol Are we supposed to use it on anything in particular or just spray it around the house? PP
Paula P – I believe it said “air freshener”.
Hi, Mary, my Little Harvey is coming along he needs his feet and the borders. Yesterday late in the afternoon, I worked on the head, and I only made one mistake! Today, I was feeling so confident and then I had problems with the 1x 1 1/2 little pieces, kept sewing them to the wrong colors, cut the legs too wide, so I had to reap and trim and sew again. Your pattern is easy to follow, but I always have problems cutting and sewing straight. I kept thinking, I wish Mary was next door to help me. Anyway, a regular ”Comedy of Errors”. But I hope to do the borders tomorrow and find a piece for rhe backing. I am thinking that I should buy big Harvey now. Have a nice Sunday.
Felicia H – you’re doing a great job! Made progress and I have a mistake in my Harvey which I’ll show you when he gets binding on. Someday why don’t you come down and we’ll sew on something – it’s an idea and would be fun! Practice makes perfect! And I do think spring is here! Little cleaning projects lift my spirits and if you found a $5 bill you made money at the same time! Haha! Sweet!
You know, Mary, that sounds like a great idea! I let you know when I can do it. Little Harvey needs a little more work, I will send you a picture when it gets done. Have a nice week, Felicia
Mary,
I will be at the Minnesota Quilt Show Thursday afternoon through Saturday. Will you be attending one of Bonnie Hunter’s classes? I was too late to get a ticket. I’m excited to be going! It’s been a few years since I’ve been to the show.
Must be the time for doing some cleaning. Started on cleaning my bedroom yesterday. Washed windows on my back door. Decluttered my desk drawer. I do believe Spring is here!!!
When is the quilt show in Rochester??? Would love to add is to my summer outings… lol
Kate Schloemer – MN Quilters is in Rochester, June 13,14,15 and I don’t know if it’s on Sunday. Better go online to check for sure.
I spent the day at the Milwaukee Brewers spring training facility in sunny Phoenix. Too bad they lost. Then it was NCAA b-ball games for the rest of the day. I love that all too just like you.
Next week is the International Quilt Show in Chicago. Do you ever attend? I’m inspired by your scrap organization. I will be looking for Bonnie Hunter’s books at the show.
Kathy G from Oak Creek – we vended many times at that show. We attended the first one and then had 4 booths for quite a number of years following until we closed in 2014.
I will stay posted for more updates on a get together during the MN quilt show in Rochester, this sounds wonderful. I also plan to go to restaurant in Mantorville as well!
Cynthia Sabinske – you will love the Hubbell House! I have June 13 to go to the show as of now. I will keep you posted closer to that date – we old have a little chicken scratch board meeting! Haha!
