Saturday Update, 11-23-24

Things are not great – threw up all night so they put a tube down my nose to drain my stomach of yucky stuff. I’ve never experienced anything so awful – I won’t post a picture. They did give me a shampoo cap which feels so much better!

I can’t pretend to paint a pretty picture here. I’m praying to feel better soon – I know God will hear my prayers.

Sorry to hear you’re having a rough time. I’ve been trying to leave a message but for some reason I haven’t been able to. No worries though. Take care.

      Hi Mary,
I am so very sorry you are going through all of this. I am writing because I am hoping they did a CAT scan of your abdomen! My hubby has had serious health issues for 14 months with 4 surgeries. He had an ostomy for 7 months. When they put him back together in May he tolerated fluids when they let him have some but he was just like you with his very first meal, throwing up all night. The CAT scan showed a large hematoma pressing up against where they reconnected him. The Dr said apparently the body did not like that so his colon that is only 12″ long now went to “sleep” again. So he had the tube also & then the hematoma became infected & he had a drain in his side almost 3 months. It is 14 months of a ridiculously long story. IF they have not done a CAT scan please insist on one! Praying for healing!! Hugs & prayers.

  3. Pat Smith

That sounds really awful. I always throw up after general anesthesia and hate it more than anything else. The tube should help get you past this unpleasantness even though it’s unpleasant itself. You have a lot of people thinking of you and praying for your recovery. You have so many people and animals that need you!

  4. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

    Mary,
Oh, NG tubes are the worst and one of my least favorite things to ever have to give a patient. You won’t have it long and it will help. I know that doesn’t help how you’re feeling. Please rest the best you can.
The Lions 🏈 play at 1pm (my time.) Hope you can watch and cheer them on. Just heard our local (Detroit) sports guy say it’s been 70 days since the Lions lost a game. When I think back on all the bad seasons we’ve had here… especially the 0-16 season!! I’m so grateful for the team doing well.
Yesterday my son asked my husband and me to come help finish a few outside jobs before winter. We put a tarp up on the east side of the chicken coop where the wind comes off the lake and I’m sure they’ll appreciate that this winter. They used the blower and cleaned out his gutters. I couldn’t watch! He has a tall two story lake house up on a hill. I just prayed he wouldn’t fall off the roof. I emptied my trailer of dirt and looking in his garage I found a basket with about 60 tulip bulbs, so I planted those. Poor Biscuit got in the burrs and my husband got them all out only to have Biscuit go back wherever he was roaming and get more burrs! That dog can be a slow learner sometimes.
I’ve never heard of Runzas. Can you tell us about them and maybe a recipe if you make them?
Sharon G., aren’t sisters just the best!? I have 5 and love going to estate sales and fabric shops with them.
Patti from Florida, I wish I could have went to that fabric estate sale with you! I did go to something similar about 3 years ago and think I’ve finally finished up all that fabric and kits.
Have a great day everyone! 🌻

This was not the news I was expecting. I am so sorry. Hopefully things will be better. I was expecting you to go home today. A little set back but stay positive.

    Prayers for your healing, Mary.

  6. Gloria from CC

I was so hoping your next blog post would tell us you are going home. So sorry your recovery is so miserable. Keep praying to God because he does answer our prayers. I’ll pray extra hard for you this morning in Church. 🙏❤️

  7. Donna Albright

I’m so sorry you’re sick! I don’t know what else to say, but I really mean it from the bottom of my heart.
Sure wish you were home. It’s gonna be a beautiful day -almost 60 degrees! My son has promised that this is the day to put up the icicle lights. This is the last warmish day for a while, according to the weather guy. Not that we can always believe him but…… I guess I will dump my annuals today although some of them are still blooming. Believe it or not, the petunias are still blooming but not as much as when it was warmer.
Hang in there…you’ll feel better soon. God will care for you.

  8. Donna O from WI

Sorry for the misery you feel now. I’m joining the rest of the many people praying that you have a complete recovery soon.

  9. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

I’m joining you with prayers for healing and comfort.
Not much here. Football Saturday. Grateful for an Ohio State win. I watched Iowa State last night. It was a close game! And couldn’t believe it was 11 o’clock when I went to bed.I
Bitterly cold and we’re not even in the worst of it yet!!

  10. Sue H

Praying healing prayers for you. I’m sure God hears all our prayers and will answer soon. In the meantime imagine you’re in your quilting space and making the most beautiful quilt ever. And using up so many scraps!

  11. Carla

I’ve been trying to keep up on you, Mary. I may not comment, but you are in my prayers. You mentioned how reading the comments helps pass the time and then I felt guilty for not commenting. I’m in a big rush trying to eke out time to finish one more small quilt for NC. I plan to bind it today and mail it Tuesday. I’m cutting it so close. I have 5 plus one more, but I am not sure I can get the last one ready before deadline. I will admit that I’m very nervous to send them. I’m not a perfect quilter and all I see are the flaws 🙁 But I am hopeful that whoever receives them will like them anyways. Our Thanksgiving this year is a lunchtime meal cause the DH works from 6pm to 6am that day. Rotating shifts are pretty horrible. Can’t wait for retirement! I expect a full house. My sister is coming to take my mom to her house for their evening meal. Is it mean to say I’m looking forward to having a break? I don’t mean it to be, but she has been a particular challenge as far as her attitude lately. Boundaries are important. She’s crossing more than a few lately and much grace is needed. Anyway, it’s neither here nor there. I pray for your continued healing and for a great outcome. I hope you aren’t too stir crazy being struck in the hospital. Getting home will feel sooo nice!

  12. Jeanne in Co.

Oh no, another bump in the road, but maybe it is a blessing to get all that crud out of your stomach. We are all praying for a peaceful and restful night for you. As the others have said, I have heard too that the third day and night are the worst. Hopefully you are over the hump and are on the road to recovery. Please God, no more bumps in the road.🙏🏼 How are Rick, Becky and the furry and feathered animals doing? Probably wondering where their faithful, loving provider has been. Sleep well tonight, Mary. God is faithful and has you in His healing hands.
Upholding you in prayers, Jeanne in Co.

  13. Lorraine Troescher

So sorry you’ve had a rough time. I’ve heard them say the 3rd day is the hardest so getting past it I hope you start feeling much better each day. Know there are many out there praying for you to have a good recovery. Bless you

  14. Elizabeth P McDonald

Mary, I am pulling for you, as are so many others here! I have had the dreaded tube twice, and my poor hubbie had them on multiple occasions. Once the stuff in your tummy is out (maybe it is bile?) they will come with big smiles and take the tube out right away. Once mine was out, within a half hour I had practically forgotten the whole thing. Just hang in there and get better so that you can get home to your plants and chickens and kitties and dogs and quilts. We all care about you so much

  15. Vivienne in IN

I’m sorry to hear you had a bad night. It’s good that you’re still in the hospital where you are cared for. They sure know what to do. I hope you don’t have to have the tube very long and that you can get some rest tonight. I know it’s rough but try to rest if you can. And you know you’re right; nothing beats a good old pinwheel block so I’m planning my next one. Thank you for the encouragement!

  16. Sue in PA

Mary, I am praying for you to have a better night and a smoother road to recovery. I am sorry you are having to endure this suffering and hope it gets better for you soon. So many of us are thinking of you and praying for you. You have many friends who love you, many of whom have never met you but feel a kinship with you nevertheless.

  17. Elaine Nixon

Hope that the night brings a good sleep and that tomorrow you find some comfort. So glad that you are in good hands and that you are blessed with amazing support. Hang in there Mary❤️😘

  18. Jeanie S, Central IL

So sorry you are having such a rough time, Mary. I hope tomorrow is better.
    Hugs & Prayers, 🥰

  19. Sandra Fraenkel

I am so sorry you are going through this.
But, you are down with the surgery, no more dreading it. Just rest and healing.
    God’s peace,

Oh Mary – you know we’re all here for you and sending our prayers out like wildfire. It takes awhile for that anesthesia to get out of our bodies and then all the nasties happen! At least you are still in the hospital where they can handle it for you. Please put all your energy into resting up for your body to heal. We did the last of our outdoor work today and put up the few outdoor lights we do have . All inner back yard for us to see! No ladders required! Just light for the bunnies and squirrels to find the feeders and the deer in the middle of the night walking through town! We were coming home in the dark last night – something we RARELY do and a nice doe and buck trotted across the road in front of us! We’re very cautious in that area so we’re going really slow! Thus the reason for staying home at night! Peaceful dreams ahead.

  21. Karen in Hocking Hills, SE Ohio

Mary, God is listening to all the prayers being sent to him with your name front and center. He will take care of you Hopefully very soon. You are loved and admired from coast to coast for your creativity, determination, love of animals, friendship offered, and compassion for others. Thank you for being the beautiful person you are and may all our prayers be answered tonight.

  22. Jo in Wyoming

Oh, Mary. We all are praying for you an easy recovery. I’ve heard the third day is the worse. I had a night nurse once that laid my head on her shoulder while she rubbed my back. It was so comforting…I’ll never forget her. I wish I was there to put some lotion on and rub your back.
My neighbor put up his outside Christmas lights today. It was a good day for that. 62 degrees and no wind. He will work on them till Wednesday then turn them on Thanksgiving night. It’s a beautiful sight.
I did some laundry. Tonight, I should iron more pillow case kits.
Loretta was outside in the warm weather all day. She will snore and twitch all night!
Sleep as much as you can.

  23. patti

hi mary, sorry you had such a rough evening/night. maybe that was needed to get your digestive system back to where it is supposed to be. hopefully now the recovery will be on a faster track. prayers work so many miracles in our lives.
i ventured out today to a quilter’s estate sale. whew! wasn’t sure i could do it but it did wonders for my psyche! the woman running the sale got me a chair right away as it was a hefty walk from the street to the door and inside. of course, people are not really nice in a situation like this. but, lucky for me, most of what i was looking for was gone. when the lady found out i work so much with scraps, she gave me tons for free. i bought a couple books, a couple journal notebooks, fancy boxes for storing things, pieces that were really fat quarters or half yards. seller said the fabric sold so well that it will pay for this woman’s independent living for quite some time. always good to hear. the women who’s estate it was was obviously alot like me as it the fabric was stuff i would have bought, all quilt shop quality. only one baggie of stuff that i would call costume, slinky fabric. will donate that away. i spent a grand total of $25. came home with a business card in case we need that service in the future. already have bunches of it color sorted and can just wheel this thing next to the machine and get going. got enough reds/greens that i can cut the sizes i need for that quilt.
thought the idea of all that scrappy shopping would help cheer you up. like i really need more scraps. but they are different scraps. prayers continue for your recovery and feeling better, gentle hugs, patti in florida

Squeak, Buddy, and I are sending good thoughts for a better day tomorrow. That tube had to hurt. Hang in there. At least you are in a good hospital. Feel better!❤️

  25. Holly in Two Harbors

Oh Mary, I’m so sorry you’re having such a rough time! Throwing up against a big stomach wound is awful. I hope by the time you’re reading this, things are looking more positive. And I hope you got good news about your surgery results and prognosis. I’m thinking of you every day.

  26. Sharon F

Oh Mary, bless your heart! I hope you will feel better very soon! In the meantime, the hospital is the best place for you to be.

  27. Jo Anne Schnebly

So sorry. I’ve been through this with each surgery. Digestive system goes to sleep and takes several days to wake up. Just have to endure it. It will get better.

  28. Bea knight

Hi Mary, sorry you are having a rough time, and hope that things improve quickly. Don’t be in a rush to do everything when you get home, could you employ someone to do the chores for a few weeks? It will help in your recovery Mary, and we all want the best for you! Take care everyone, especially you Mary, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Deb in Ohio

      Oh, Mary,
I’m so sorry that had to happen! I’ve had that done and it is not fun that’s for sure. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone! Im sending good thoughts your way.

  30. Mary

God does hear your prayers as well as the prayers of all of us who are praying for you. Hope you are feeling better soon. Don’t rush trying to go home and when you do get to go home listen to what the doctors say and take care of yourself. Don’t overdo.

  31. Pat in AZ

Oh Mary, this just sucks! Sorry you are having to deal with this. Fingers crossed it resolves quickly

  32. marion epley

soo sorry–praying all this time–everyones prayers were working this fall when you were over achieving–will keep on keeping on for you and all the other great friends who are pretty worried when there are no updates

  33. Helen J. (Texas)

Hi Mary, oh! This hospital recovery sounds dreadful. I hope everything is being done to benefit you that is available. So many prayers are being said “so a turn for the good must be on the way”…to return you home and that will be a welcome event. Much thoughts and Prayers…

  34. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, I am sending many hugs and gentle prayers to you. We are watching the Iowa State vs Utah football 🏈 game and hope you are too!
We are thankful to have power again after 3 days without. One of our sons and family are staying with us as their area got hit very badly by the Bomb Cyclone. Power company predicts that the power will not be restored until Monday night, if then. That is almost a week without. Such a loss for so many…some grocery stores have been closed for 6 days now and this is one of their busiest weeks of the year. So much food had to be discarded by the stores and now homeowners are emptying their refrigerators and freezers.
Yet, we still have so much to be thankful for. Wishing Team Mary a Blessed Thanksgiving and continued healing and comfort for Mary.

  35. Carolyn Boutilier

Praying for a better evening. Not fun throwing up with a large incision. We had a cool November day. I checked out an antique shop looking for some old or vintage ornaments. I did find a mustard color Belsnickle and some Blue Shiny Brite ornaments to put on the table top vintage silver tree. I was putting the tree on top of a cabinet when it toppled on to the floor and broke a dozen or more Shiny Brite ornaments. I should have gotten on my little step stool but over it went. This afternoon I worked on my wool trees made from wool for friends. Monday we are exchanging gifts. We like to do it early and then we get to enjoy our gifts the whole Christmas season. In our office I put up the large quilted snowman I made from your book years ago. Prayers and hugs so you can get back to Hazel. I am sure she is missing you. Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va

    1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

      Carolyn,
You should send in pictures of your wool trees for Mary to post when she is home and feeling up to it. I would love to see what they look like as I’m sure others would too.

  36. Marcia-SW Ohio

Hugs & prayers for a better day tomorrow.

Weather has turned off wintry in SW Ohio. Had to dig out a winter coat yesterday😬.

Had a miserable day longarming. Spent more time ripping than stitching🤨
Finally got the small pieces done and shut the machine down for the night. Had planned to get other projects worked on but that didn’t happen -maybe tomorrow.

When you get home, watch Man on the Inside on Netflix w/ Ted Danson. I enjoyed it.

  37. Kelli

Oh Mary I’m so so sorry you had to experience a nasal gastro tube 😥 praying that can keep out soon and you feel better right quick! ❤️🙏Sending a gentle hug your way

  38. Elizabeth

Mary I am so sorry you are going through this. I am really hoping your recovery begins in earnest soon. I hope you can get some rest. Sending love from Wisconsin.

  39. Bonnie

So sorry you are feeling so awful. Surgery is NOT FUN! In a previous comment I said I had had whatever many surgeries. Not True. I have had five. Not a fun time but always a good result. Praying for you, Mary. I know God listens.

    1. Charlotte

Lifting you in prayer for improvement in healing and comfort minute by minute, so that by the time you read this you are indeed feeling better. Your husband and furry and feathered family miss you and so do we. Lots of love from your blog buddies!

  40. Sharon G. from Eastern Washington

Mary – Today, Saturday, is day 4. Soon this will all be but a memory. Hang in there! Thinking of you and sending a hug your way. 🙏
I went to 2 bizarres with my two sisters today. The three of us are 73, 75, and 78 years old, respectively. We are all 3 widows and aging gracefully or as gracefully as we can. We all bought a few crafts and gifts. I bought a mesh bag I’m going to use as a project bag even though the vendor kept calling it a “potato” bag! 😂 We followed up the outing by going out to lunch. It was a fun day!
I saw some quilts for sale but I didn’t buy one. I can’t justify purchasing a quilt when I have at least 3 I’m working on now.
I came home to a cold house so I turned on the gas fireplace. It’s nice and comfy now and my two cats are napping. Just as I wrote that one of them jumped on my lap! Cats!
Keep thinking positively, Mary. Remember to do what the doctors and nurses say or order. Before you know it, you’ll be home!

    Take care everyone.

  41. Jeanine from SE iowa

As many have said, I am praying for you and hope you are turning the corner to better health after last night. I have had that nasty tube down my nose once, and it is definitely not fun and very uncomfortable. I pray you have a restful night, and feel much better in the morning.

  42. Rosalie in Texas

Your gut will wake up. I’ve never met anyone who liked a nasogastric tube but throwing up is not good- hard on abdominal muscles and sutures.
    Prayers continue.

  43. Cindy from Minnesota

Mary, by now I am hoping you are feeling better. My mom was a nurse and she always had sayings about things, usually day three after surgery can be a tough day, here is what I read when ai asked (Google) about day three after surgery… Mild or moderate pain and swelling at the incision site are common. These symptoms usually peak 2 to 3 days after surgery and then get better. Many people also feel a little dizzy, sleepy, or drowsy. Nausea (feeling sick to stomach), and vomiting (throwing up) are also common. But your medical team can give you the why’s, what’s. Glad you’re still in the hospital, they are keeping an eye over you and your health. Take care.

    1. Heidi

Not fun at all, but once your bowels get going you will feel so much better. Better days are ahead. Just hang it there.

  44. Marcella - Northern IL

Evening Mary, Sorry to hear today has been an uncomfortable day for you. I keep thinking of you with well wishes. I am sure the nurses are watching you closely. They probably are monitoring and charting information for the doctors. We say you are tough but that’s not what you want to hear right now when you are feeling miserable. Wish there was something we could do. You are tired and the shock of this surgery has been unnerving. You are right to put this in God’s hands and ask for healing comfort. Your church services are available to watch on Sunday mornings so maybe you will be able to attend church that way tomorrow. Glad you got you hair done! There is hope and you know what? I better be still.

  45. Jan Hebert in MA

Oh, Mary, that does not sound fun. I pray they can help you get through this recovery and send you home soon. I hope you sleep better tonight, and that tomorrow is a better day. Love you! Jan in MA

  46. BRENDA

so sorry you are feeling so poorly. So far you have not had dry heaves in a really good friend
s face that turned out not to be so dry in the end, Yea. guilty…..

  47. Angie from Baltimore

They say it is always darkest before the dawn but when you are going through it you really don’t want to hear it. Getting rid of the sludge in your stomach will be a gift of a clean slate to start fresh and stop your vomiting. Each day I hope starts a little easier than the day before knowing you will be stepping back before plunging forward to healing. You have a lot of people cheering you on. Can you hear us. Listen hard we are all shouting “GO MARY GO”

  48. Barbara (in MO)

Thanks for the update, Mary. So sorry that things aren’t going better. However its good that this happened while you’re still in the hospital rather than leaving and then having to go back.
We’re all praying for the best recovery for you and to get home to see your dogs, cats, and hens as soon as possible!

  49. Anna M

I’m thinking he’s hearing all of our prayers for your recovery.
Hopefully every day will bring something better.
It was fairly nice here today. Didn’t do anything outside. Me and my sister went to a holiday open house at a quilt store in a neighboring town and to an antique store. I still have to patch some holes in the plastic on my chicken run before it gets cold next week. I made runzas tonight for supper. First time and oh were they good! Take care Mary. Hope you feel better soon!

  50. Gloria in NC

Oh, Mary, I know how horrible you feel with the vomiting and nausea! Tomorrow should be a better day. Prayers for your comfort and recovery.

  51. Elizabeth

Like everyone else I am hoping for better days ahead and quicker healing. I am sad that you have to go through all this, but know you will come out in the other side soon. Much love to you.

  52. Mary Rhodes. SW Ohio

Oh Mary , having it rough right now does happen. Hoping tomorrow b better for you. No need to send pictures seen it lot over the years. Praying to get better. Get body working again.

  53. Cindy LeTourneau

Praying for a speedy recovery and healing for you. I’m sorry it has been such a difficult road for you.

  55. Mrs. Goodneedle

Praying for God’s healing touch. I’m so sad to know that you’re going through this. Tomorrow will be a better day.

    1. Janet Beyea

I’m so sorry you are going through all this. I can relate because I had a very similar experience after surgery. Having the tube down your throat is just horrible, but it really worked for me and got my bowels working again. I was never so happy to hear my stomach gurgle. I hope you have the same good result. I’m keeping you in my prayers.

  56. Lora in Clear Lake

Hi Mary- so sorry you are having such an awful time. My husband had the same with his bowel blockage and the stomach tube and anti nausea meds helped him- I hope they help you too. Sending you lots of healing vibes and hugs!

  57. Ann in PA

Oh Mary, I sure hope they can adjust your meds so you don’t continue with an upset stomach. There are many prayers going up for your recovery. May you have a good night and a better day tomorrow. God bless you! Hugs xxoo

  58. Sandi

Mary, I’m so sorry you are having such a rough time. I am hoping you turn the corner any day now and start to feel better. Make sure they are giving you medication for the neausa, they have some excellent ones. Hugs,

Oh Mary, so sorry you are having issues. Throwing up with an incision has got to be awful! I sure hope you start feeling better soon. 💕

  61. Kathy in western NY

Keeping you close in prayer and asking for a little more from God doesn’t hurt.
We want you feeling yourself as much as you do.
So we went to our camp this morning and dropped off some clothing and blanket donations to their local church thrift shop. The ladies volunteer every Saturday in this resort type area till mid December and then close it down. It reopens in April. Families sell lake places, etc and donate so much to this church so it’s worthwhile to spend time looking. We were asked by several of the ladies, “ now where do you winter?” And we said at our home west of here about an hour away and they were surprised, saying “good for you to stick it out here”. I thought it’s not that bad for winter here cause I have so much to do inside, I never mind January and February. I don’t need another area to be away from home to go to for winter. And if I want to walk, I have a community center we can use as well as indoor malls we can walk if we chose. It’s all easy to drive to.
Our medical insurance is adding a rider that we can go to the Y too but I get enough socializing, enlightenment and fulfillment with my church involvement in mission work helping families and my other usual activities. It was a fun bag of treasures to buy like all cotton cloth plaid napkins, a nascar mug, snowman tree topper, and a lighthouse snow globe. You get well soon! Thrifting awaits you too!

  62. Gail in Ohio

You are in our thoughts and prayers – hopefully this will rectify itself soon!! Many gentle hugs to you…

  63. Beverly in Texas

Praying for each day to be better. Healing takes time & we mortals are impatient! You have such a great support group in your church & community friends.
All the worries will take care of themselves in God’s timing. He is faithful 🙏🏻

Sending prayers that tomorrow is a better day. Been thinking about you all day and how you were doing. Thanks for keeping all of us posted.

  69. Jean

Oh Mary! I’m so sorry you have to go through all this. Turn around day will soon come. You had a really big surgery and the body needs time to recover. Hang tough. Prayer is the answer and many are praying for you!

  70. Katherine

Oh, Mary I pray you will start to feel better soon. I’m praying that this surgery has been successful and you can heal and back to all the things you love to do. I’m sure you are missing your pets . They will be so happy when you get home.
Today we had our family Thanksgiving at my small house. Was such a nice day especially having the youngest grandson that’s five months old. Luke is such a delight. Next Wednesday I’m off to Camp Verde in Arizona for another Thanksgiving with my two brothers and their wives. Looking forward to some warmer temperatures and maybe some sun. There are horses on both sides of my brother’s house so I’m looking forward to feeding them lots of carrots.
When I get home I need to make that five month old his stocking. I’ve made 12 Xmas stockings in all , one more to go. I wish time didn’t go so fast, it’s tricky getting it all done in time.
    Get better soon Mary!

Mary, I feel so bad for you, this does not sound like a easy recovery and your headed for home. I will say a few more prayers for you to get better quickly. Hopefully everything is going well at home with the animals.

    Dear Mary
You are tough. They will get it figured out and you will get better. Many prayers for you today and into the future. 🙏🙏🙏
I am working on a little embroidered candy cane ornament for my friends package. Trying to stay ahead of the game.
My hubby and I drove over to Sisters and their 4th Friday Art Walk. Could not have asked for a better evening. It was 60° yesterday and the evening was calm and warm. We made it through 4 galleries of art, enjoyed a little “ice tea” and crackers with cheese and even strolled through the bookstore looking for gifts. November evenings are rarely this nice but we lucked out and so will you with all those paying attention to you. It is your turn to be pampered. Enjoy it!
