Starting Early, 1-12-26

More very fun cat photos came in today and with the ballgame tonight I’m starting early. Gosh, I love these cats! I have a couple young friends who do not like cats and I’ve made it clear they are not welcome to visit if they aren’t kind to my cats.

And today:

Finn, Ivy and Keeper

Finn
Barney
Keeper and Three
Thank you, Gayle, for this sweet picture!!
Becky and Hazel – hilarious!!
I’ll bet this is a great book!

And an update – no sign of my missing goose. This picture was taken January 3 – it shows 5 geese. Becky walked the pasture with me today just in case I was missing something. Not a feather anywhere. So unsettling in my mind.

All the cat photos have been pretty, but today’s are extra interesting–the variety of colors and poses is so neat! I’m so sorry about Becky’s mom falling and not getting timely help. I hope I never have to go into a facility like that (and it seems they are all like that from what I’ve heard, and experienced with my brother). Sad, angry, stressed — because I know there is nothing I can do to make things better. Finn and Ivy gave you a fuller house with lots of doggy activity– glad they all get along! I put ‘Making the Best of What’s Left’ on hold at my library. Was able to read a sample on my kindle and already got a few chuckles, so looking forward to reading the entire book.

Those pictures of Keeper and Three are priceless! What a pair. I do hope you find your 5th goose. I know it is so bothersome to wonder where it is or how it might have met its end. I love your blog!!!!!

The cat pictures are all so cute. It’s funny how they can find the darndest places to rest – in Christmas trees, among knick knacks, on tabletops, in cake pans or out in the middle of the floor. Glad your readers have captured some of those moments and shared them.

The kitties are all so pretty. The fur babies are so beautiful!! And then there is Hazel who does not like your phone Mary! Our great granddaughter does not like to FaceTime with me! She is 3 months and scared of it.
    So sorry about your goose.
Today is a girls day out to the quilt store in Dell Rapids! Yay! Love that store,
It is suppose to be in the 50s again today! Love this weather!

Becky I would be furious with the facility where your mom lives! The purpose of that cord is that immediate attention is needed! Being independent should have no bearing on getting help, anyone can fall. I guess after this she should call 911! I would be making this clear to the director since they were so slow to respond. Even though I don’t have a cat, but a dog, I sure have enjoyed these beautiful cat pictures! I have a friend who owns Maine Coons. Those cats are gorgeous! She just bought a camper to travel to shows & is doing very well with them. Mary, could the goose have found a place in the barn somewhere to hide?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – I have also searched every inch of the barn interior – had Becky help me look yesterday. If I find her in some corner that I’ve walked by 100 times I think I’m going to faint. I gotta try to move on – the mystery will rank right up there with – where did Mortie come from. Sigh. I thought about Becky’s mom falling and recall Mom’s very lightweight mattress that easily slid off the bed because of plastic mattress protector. Those mattresses had to raise and lower like a hospital bed which I remember well – lightweight, no support. I’m enraged FOR Becky and her mom.

Oh, Alice, I just don’t think that there is an easy solution.

My mother-in-law was in memory care for quite a while, and when she was bored, she would dial 911! Apparently the excitement entertained her? The care home was required to send her in an ambulance once the call was made or any time that a resident complained of chest pain. After a couple of false alarms, and some very expensive bills added to the monthly cost, the care home people disconnected her phone from the switchboard. We worried ourselves sick that she would need help and wouldn’t get it because of her crying Wolf. On the other hand, we could barely manage with the limited funds available, and the several hundred dollars added to the bill was overwhelming. She was in a shared room, and those two ladies caused So Much Trouble! LOL

Susan – I think this is a pretty funny story actually – it’s not but the entertainment value is right up there! Ha!

I love looking at all those sweet faces. God made them just right. Something for us to cuddle and love. BTW, Medicaid patients could not be in assisted living. I can assure you no state pays $11,000 per month per patient.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

France’s – you’re right – only self pay is charged $11,000 per month – at the care center here. When my mom was there it was $7000 and if she hadn’t had farm rent I don’t know how we would have paid it.

Each day i see the cat photos and I go to comment on one – then I keep scrolling and find it like them all! Such fun and so many have captured such amazing photos!

So sorry about the goose 😢

That book looks great- i was just thinking yesterday when I was out with the dog how I should “fix” some flower beds but don’t have the energy to tackle things like that anymore- I’d rather be quilitng!! Guess after decades of life I have my priorities straight! 🤣

Happy belated birthday to sweet Hazel. I came down with that respiratory flu that is going around so haven’t been on my phone for a few days. So far Tylenol and elderberry syrup seem to be keeping the worst symptoms under control.
Love all the cat pictures. I too am a cat person. Everything seems cozier when there’s a cat in the room.
I don’t know if anyone remembers me telling the story of my niece having Whipple surgery for pancreatic cancer a year ago. Well she’s had a rough year with lots of complications. Yesterday she was admitted to Hospice. She fought a valiant battle but in the end she lost. Keep her in your prayers please.

    1. Kelli in N.E. Ohio

So sorry to hear about your niece’s! That is an mind boggling surgery and such a difficult road. Praying right now for all of you

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – sadly Gloria said she’s going to die in a few days. Isn’t that awful?

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – oh, I’m so sorry about your niece! I remember you talking about that procedure. Pancreatic cancer never seems to have a hopeful path. And youve been very sick? I’ve heard that flu is rampant around here, too. Hope you’re getting your strength back! My love to Caitlin!

  9. Linda

Oh…I hope the goose comes home….

Keeper and three are adorable….so sweet… my Zoe Rose is still an imp…

  10. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

Lots of great cat pictures again. Mary not sure if you are inundated with emails of cats, I sent you one earlier today with our Patsie snuggling in my son’s coat.

Hope the goose is found soon.

The rains were crazy today as predicted. Lots of road closures and people on alert in case rivers spilled their banks. A lot of people had flooding in November. It must be so hard for them, barely recovered from the last flood and another flood alert. Praying it doesn’t flood and the rains stop soon.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I will double check but I don’t remember Patsie in the coat – please resend!

Oh Becky I am sorry to hear of your Mom’s ordeal this morning. Thank goodness she did sustain any serious injury that may have required “prompt” assistance.
My question to the director of her facility would be are 911 calls reported to some angecy where it would reflect negatively on your response to response to your residents?

Perhaps Mary will choose your mom as our next card recipient. Just sending good well greetings to her.

  12. Sandy

Hi Mary, impossible to choose a favorite cat! They are all beautiful! Can’t believe how good keeper is with cats and dogs, Bella wants to chase any cat she sees and doesn’t like dogs! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

The poor goose, I hope she’s found a safe spot to shelter.

A couple days ago I mentioned my 94 year old quilting mother. She had a fall first thing this morning—was feeling a little unsteady getting out of bed so leaned on the mattress, which slid towards her and pushed her on the floor. Needless to say I have a mattress gripper on order (who knew there was such a thing?). EMTs took her to the hospital and their scans showed no damage beyond a ferocious black eye so she’s back home. Most upsetting was the lack of care at her assisted living residence. All residents are instructed to pull the emergency cord rather than calling 911. Which she did, and it took them over half an hour to come to her! When lodging a complaint, the first person told her that because she’s on the independent plan it “takes a minute” to respond. So I guess they look at your payment plan before deciding whether to help. I’m outraged (can you tell?) but Mom wants to speak with the director herself so I’ll find out more tomorrow. What a world.

Anyway, got a smile looking at the cats, especially Three and Keeper cuddling. Better than humans sometimes, yes?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

That hardly deserves a comment / independent plan means leaving her on the floor for 30 min? Does that mean if the resident is Medicaid – government paying their way – that they get prompt service? Maybe I got that wrong. My mom was not in any type of assistance in the care center and we noticed many times that help did not come. Putting your light on meant nothing. The current price per month here is $11,000 – and for that amount of money I would think the service would be exemplary but it’s not. I am so sorry for your mom! I hope you complain – loudly. “Takes a minute “ to respond????? WHY????

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Becky – a suggestion was made to send cards to your mom – what do you think? Yes?

      1. Becky in WA

Mary, thank you and others for the card suggestion. On the one hand, I think she would enjoy seeing where everyone is from, and on the other hand she’s a private, stiff upper lip person. Let me think on it. Sorry I didn’t explain better—independent means she doesn’t receive any nursing or health care assistance, just meals and some housekeeping. There are levels of additional assistance such as meal delivery, bathing help, medication management, etc. She fortunately doesn’t need any of that. And indeed will be calling 911 directly if ever needed. Learning about all this has become eye-opening in a negative way. I have no children, lost my husband a few years ago and am the youngest sibling by quite a bit, and honestly have no wish to live into my 90s. Maybe that’ll change when I’m my 80s, lol.

So sorry to hear about your Mom! I took care of 3 aging parents for 15 years and can say unfortunately I dealt with similar issues. It’s so frustrating/angering/stressful!! I could never wrap my head around the answers I was given and like Mary said – the prices you pay for assisted/full care facilities 😱 so sad and im so sorry you and your Mom are having to deal with all of this!!😢

      1. Becky in WA

Thank you, and what a great daughter to take care of your parents for so many years! I consider myself fortunate that Mom has needed relatively little help for her age.
