Sunday

No church, no anything but snow. I’ve had several incidents I could tell you about but you’d be convinced God is punishing me for something . So if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!

I thought maybe you’d like to see Rick’s ankle x-ray with all the screws and plates.

Looks like something out of a horror movie!

I baked cookies this morning and now I’m going back to my good book “The Nest” – thank you, Tanya!

And then it’s back to this mess.

April 15, 2018 – one for the books!

Wow, for a Sunday morning in Iowa,
Your not being punished for anything, his way of telling to meditate, read and enjoy those cookies..
You give of yourself in many ways at church, and your life style with the animals…today is your day to relax..🤗

  2. Deb

Oh my! I feel so bad that you have had to deal with multiple awful weather events by yourself while Rick recouperates. Hope his progress is coming along and you have enough beer and chips to get through the next few days!

  3. Launa

    Mary,
We had big flakes of snow up here in Idaho earlier this morning…it was 31 degrees then. Is 37 now and snow quit. Noticed we had some snow same day last year. Sun is out now giving our solar panels a treat.
Poor Rick…all that metal holding him together. Looks painful. You might need some strap on cleats in your snow. Tread carefully, Mary.

  4. Martha

Looks like some mighty fine metal work in that foot/ankle!!
I’m glad you are giving yourself permission to read and relax.
The snow will melt at some point …… or at least, that’s what I’m telling myself here in Maine
    where we’re having winterspring.

Blessings upon you and upon Rick’s ongoing healing and rehab.

Wow 😳 what an ankle sure to set off airport security
Here’s a wish from me to you that all will be well and fine with you, your husband and all the furry and feathered ones you love and care for.

  6. Marie M

Praying for you Mary, and sorry it has been such a hard time for you lately. Everything cancelled around us today too in West Michigan with ice storm. Feels like a day to just relax and do nothing, and that is what I have done. Watched very interesting PBS show about Calder Kamin, Plastic Planet. She makes sculptured animals out of recycled plastic bags that people send her from all over the country. Was very interesting. Hope things improve soon for you. Spring has to be almost here!!

  7. Marian

Oh, Mary, this has been a very long winter for the books. I feel bad that you have to forge on by yourself while Rick recuperates. I am sure he is wishing he were back at the house helping out but not yet. You are a trooper up in the hay mow but be safe while doing all your chores. Winter snows certainly have a grip on us here in Rochester. The winds are furious. Hope your animals are all snug in the barn. Thank you for all you do on your farmette! Take time for yourself, too.

  8. Diane

Yes, please, do be safe and careful. I’m sure you are. Rick could be part of a barbed wire fence, poor guy. The cookies were a great idea–nothing like a good book and warm cookies. Stay warm. 🙂

  9. Jean Elliott

Amazing what they can do…hope it gives him relief and better mobility. It’s been snowing all night and still is here in Glendale Wisconsin…it’s the soft fluffy beautiful stuff! But I don’t have to shovel and my car is in the heated garage…..love condo life!

  10. Angie

Nothing smells better than cookies in the oven. Warm cookies tea and a good book. Forget the outside and relax, coffee can be substituted for tea.

  11. Patty McDonald

Are ;you sure these aren’t pictures of the north pole?! It would be so cozy and romantic but I know you have barn chores…bless you. I’m realizing it is so eeeeeeasy having farm animals in southern Calif. even if I’m pushing 70yo. If anyone wants to see a REAL super woman, they just have to view your picture.
That ankle terrifies me. Glad these Docs are specialists and know what they’re doing or I’d guess this was a ‘do it yourself’ job.
Happy April 15th….your spring can’t be too far off. Hugs and a prayer, Patty Mc

  12. Sandi

Your right the ankle looks terrible. I can’t believe all that snow. Cookies and a good book sound wonderful. Hugs,

  13. Betty Klosterman

If it is any consolation, someplace in eastern South Dakota got 22″ but I didn’t hear where. That doesn’t count the drifts from the 50 mph winds. Records were broken all over the place. Now in wonderful Rapid City, our snow is melting very fast. As soon as the sun comes out, look out, water and mush all over. Sioux Falls has drifts with heavy mush on the bottom. And where do you start? Tomorrow and on top. It just doesn’t need to be all done in one day. Be easy on yourself, even if you have front-end loaders, etc. It will look better after good night’s sleep. When you get tired, go in for a rest. If nothing else it will melt and just think of all this wonderful moisture, and of course, the mud. We need all we can get out here. Remember the big fire in Custer State Park just before Christmas 2017? The new grass is growing already and more is being planted, plus trees and fencing.

And be very glad that Rick is in the nursing home where he is being taken care of and you don’t have to do it. And recovering from his surgery. Looks like they had to break the whole foot and put it back together right. It will be good in the long run, but it is a long road. He must have had a lot of pain from it over the years.

Take care, this, too, will pass. Betty

The snow will melt very fast.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Betty – thanks so much for that encouraging news about melting. I have no place I need to go and I can talk to Rick on the phone so I’m all for letting it melt!

  14. Tanya

You are so welcome! Nothing helps our feelings like great books and fresh cookies! Hang in there! Rick’s foot looks like something the king on Games of Thrones would sport! Hoping he will be up and around soon and back on that tractor and out in the fields.

  15. Sue

I can hardly bare to look at that X Ray photo. Like something from a horror movie. They can do marvelous surgical things now, though, so we shouldn’t dwell on the look of it. But…OH-h-h- My.

I can’t believe that snow can just go on and on like it has this year. My family in Montana is experiencing tons of spring snow, too. My granddaughter posted a photo of it on FB with the caption…..Grrrr

We are having unending heavy rain here on the Ore. coast. So, I am going to pin the Hospice quilt I just finished.

Enjoy your yummy cookies and good book.

  16. patty

My Goodness! You are a Strong woman!
Thinking hopeful thoughts for you SOON to have things back to GOOD!
So glad you are safe and warm, with a good book to keep you company. I can lose hours in a good book!
God bless you two and all the furry, feathery friends there.

  17. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

Mary, so sorry to know you are having such a tough time. Have faith, it will pass. We got a sunny, warm day here yesterday (our first) followed by rain overnight and all of a sudden tiny leaves are starting to show on the teees and the grass is turning green. Spring in Iowa won’t be far off, either, even if it feels like endless winter. What kind of cookies are they? They look great. I have a new chocolate chip cookie recipe to try this week.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Fiona – chocolate chip – recipe from my friend and neighbor, Darlene who is no longer with us – makes me think about her!

  18. Paula

I am passing the names of your books to my friends. What kind of cookies are those, they sure look good?
Will b so glad for you when your weather warms up and ours too. Lot of spring cleaning to do!

    paula in KY

  19. Jo

Oh, Mary! That X-ray looks plum painful, and the snow, geez. Now those cookies look like something that could keep me inside for a while. As all the posts have said, hang in there, this too shall past.

  20. Kathy

Spring isn’t showing up any time soon in western New York either! We got ice overnight and today the ice drops off the trees onto the roof of the house making a loud bang but I am grateful we didn’t lose power. I had my hand stitching items all prepped yesterday afternoon waiting in case. Like you I am staying inside with my blueberry beer from Trader Joe’s!

  21. Gayle

I feel your pain I’m in northern Michigan. We were dumped on with snow yesterday. 14” at mid-day and it just kept snowing. Did finally get power back late yesterday. Today it was continued high winds and sleet. Many roads closed yet idiots still venture out. My husbands fire chief so he’s been out on multiple runs since 3 a.m. Saturday. I’ve dug in and read,a little sewing today.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Gayle – blessings to your poor husband who has to rescue the idiots who were told to stay home!

  22. Beryl BC

It reminds me of mid-April 1973. A foot of snow and a blizzard and then it all went away. Your cookies look great.

  23. Janie

Funny…bad weather in Wisconsin too, and I also made cookies. Got to have some sort of comfort I guess!

  24. Kate

I don’t know what to tell you. My husband and I are driving south today to get to warmer weather and it’s getting colder the farther south we get. Praying all the snow will be melted in a day or so. God loves you and is not punishing you. He may be playing a little joke though.

  25. Saundra Handy

Dear Mary, I normally don’t comment on your posts but I enjoy them very much but I felt drawn to do so today. I know you’ve had a long winter and I can’t imagine all the snow you’ve had to deal with but I don’t believe for a minute God is punishing you for anything. You are a kind and loving person who is constantly giving of herself. God loves you and will give you the strength to get through all these trials. There will be sunshine again soon and we all are praying for Rick and I believe he will be strong again soon. God bless you.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Saundra – you are right – I was sorta joking – I know better!

  26. Nina

I grew up in Iowa on a farm, near Garrison- Vinton and your snow pictures bring back many memories.
Be careful in all that, hopefully it will melt soon, just leaving you with mud !

  27. Kathy Niemann

UNREAL!! re: books. I read The Great Alone on your recommendation. good one. I just got ‘Killers of the Flower Moon”. Looks very intriguing. I’ll let you know.
“what goes up, must come down” (and vice versa… Here’s hoping)
It’ll happen.. “For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.”

      1. Sue Davis, Argyle, Texas

        Kathy and Mary,
This is a beautiful quote. I don’t know where it came. Please excuse my ignorance.
My brother in law passed May 10th and without going into details my sister has had an extraordinary amount of work in his “office” that could not be cleaned for 30 or more years. Finally she has come to the end of this ordeal to a cleaned out room, and can have the painters repair and paint the walls. Then she can have new flooring of her choice. I have made her a quilt of the serenity prayer. It is quilted and ready to go to her from her one and only sister (me). I guess to make a loooonnnnnggggg
story short this quote will be perfect for her on the label, if you don’t mind me using it.
Thank you, Sue Davis, Argyle tx.

  28. MartyCae

Thanks for sharing the picture of Rick’s ankle. Isn’t is amazing what they can do with screws and the body?

Love the kitty snoozing under the tarp! Glad it was a kitty and not something else!

  29. Ann Barlament

OUCH…that looks pain. But on the up side, wouldn’t it be fun to take him through the airport and set off the alarms!! Hahaha

  30. Carol T

Please don’t worry about that snow….as Betty said, it will melt and the guess what…mud galore! Stay in and read and sew! At least you’re not scrubbing doggies! Please take care of YOURSELF! You do not want to fall…..❤️

  31. Sue Davis, Argyle, Texas

    Hi Mary,
One last note to you. My husband is 8 weeks out from 360 back surgery. I showed him ricks ankle. He said he thought he had a lot of bolts! Gary said his back is so much improved and he knows Rick will be up and around in no time. He said the Drs now days are amazing. Gary mowed our 1.50 ac today for the first time!!! He’s tired but the yard is done, that’s a load off the old wife!!! Have a beer for me🐩😉

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Sue – I can look forward to August/September when Rick will be out of his casts and walking without pain. His non weight bearing cast wont come off till nearly July 1 and then he’ll get a walking cast – if all goes well. So glad your husband is much improved! And I agree, that quote is lovely.

  32. Becky from Texas

Oh my that does look like a horror movie…..hope that he doing okay! With the weather the way it cookies and a book are good!

  33. Felicia Hamlin

Kathy, Mary and Sue, this beautiful quote is from the Song of Solomon 2: 11-12.

Mary, the foot looks like a complete hardware store. Yikes! I am sure things will change for the good for your husband and for you also, once this crazy weather improves. Stay strong and be careful.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Felicia – thank you! You’re a wise woman – must have been reading Solomon, huh?

  34. Felicia Hamlin

Not recently, Mary, but I remember it was from that book. So. I looked it up to see the chaoter and verse. More snow today and it was wet! Did I tell you that I am going to Paducah for the Quilt show? We leave tomorrow at seven in the morning, will be there on Friday a little before noon. There are 41 going. In all my dreams, I never thought that I will ever got there, so I am so happy.
Let the snow melt, Mary, don’t shovel more than a path, I hsve been feeling sorry for the birds, especially the robins!

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Felicia – I have never been to Paducah either and probably never will – have a wonderful time! I’ll bet the weather is much nicer than here.
