Can it be over now? There were still acceptance and concession speeches today – here are my thoughts:

Reader photos

Since I’ve been doing some death cleaning it’s not surprising that I come across things I’ve had for years. This magazine spread from the early 80s still takes my breath away. I love everything about it – the color, the plants, the thrift store finds, the quilt above the fireplace, the WHITE couch, the blue enamelware – the blue walls with white woodwork. I loved it so much I laminated it! Haha!!! Am I the only one who saves magazine pictures?

And now it’s after midnight – oofdah! I’d better go to bed.

Great photos and discussions in this blog today! I too have a few quilting magazines, I will be looking thru them and deciding what to keep as I am working on getting rid of excesses. I love your quilt on your chair, Mary, do you have a pattern fit it? I believe it is half square triangles. I would love to make this! I got backing for two quilts going to the quilter on !monday. I am working on my ufo stash and soon it will be new items. It is oh so tempting to purchase something new or do a block of the month project but I am determined to get the backlog done first with small time-outs on something fun like a table runner or two. Anyway, I hope it is a goal I can accomplish before I fade into the sunset. I understand your comment about politics, my uncle used to say when you have a business stay out of that arena it could put you out of business, especially in a small town. I went to Walnut Grove yesterday and took a card-making class. Great projects and conversations. Going again in December. Four hours and we make six different cards. I will send you an article I saved from Country Living, I have this one taped to my outside shelf wall so I can see it often! Stay well. You are checking off a lot of projects before your surgery. Tell me, what was it you liked the most or best about Country Living magazine? For me, I loved every word, every article of Farm Wife, later Country Woman magazine, one of the many magazines Roy Reiman did each month or every other month. That whole genre of magazines is gone now.
Cindy – I will “attempt” to find the drawing of the quilt block but make no guarantees – you’re right tho’, it’s just two sizes of triangles
I absolutely love it, your fabrics are fantastic..Soon I will be working on current projects again. It was not wise for me to be so impulsive…I am going to make your pattern called Sea Glass Stars from the book Scrap School Sisters..
Mary – love the quilt photos. Keeper and Three look comfortable together! Cozy even.
Another family member is undergoing medical issues. My younger sister has a very large cyst on her kidney. I went with her to the urologist appointment in early October and today to the CT Scan. A MRI was done on her back after she complained for months about the pain which started in March. The 12cm cyst was noted in the MRI report and she was referred to the urologist. And, here we are 8 months later! Unbelievable! The cyst is bigger and her back pain is not better. The only thing the doctors have prescribed so far is physical therapy. Not sure if a biopsy or what procedure will be done next. We assume the urologist will want to see her sooner rather than later. We’re all in disbelief and hoping and praying for a positive outcome. 😢
Take care everyone.
Sharon – no, not another family member with serious health issues! Physical therapy? Really? Will it never end for you guys? I was also given every excuse for months – now it’s been one year with a malignant tumor in my abdomen.
Mary – My family is sticking together through all of this but it is not without other issues going on. It’s been one crisis or one illness – one right after another for months.
To top it off, Dementia was just outside for another family member and now it has opened the door ever so slightly… it is unbelievable and very worrisome.
I moved back to my hometown in April to be close to family. It has been a heartbreaking 💔 journey. But, some days are better than others so I’m praying a lot. And I just take it one day at a time!
Take care everyone.
Sharon G – oh no, not another setback for your family? Sounds like you’re the one holding it all together – it’s hard.
This post is an absolute feast for the eyes; all the quilts are just beautiful.
I love seeing Keeper and Three snuggled up together in a comfy chair-sweet.
It was sunny today, but did not get too far into the 60’s. We ran errands; a heavy sweatshirt was perfect.
Yes, I also save magazine pages, Mary. Thanks for the blog. 🥰
Great pictures today. Mary Beth, I love your quilts especially the large leaf quilt. I’m not politically neutral but believe anyone has the right to their own beliefs. It’s always interesting to hear why people believe the way they do.I’m pretty excited today I got a digital pressure canner. I’m looking forward to learning how to use it.
Love all the quilts on the couches. Oh, I remember the day when I would just sit and enjoy my magazine, but the print is getting too small for me to really enjoy them. Switched to large print Reader’s Digest this year. Magazines on my tablet just isn’t the same. I get nostalgic for things of the past like magazines and cookbooks. The last cookbook I bought I couldn’t use the print was so small.
I, too, think the blue and white room you saved is classic and very beautiful. I like the look of a neutral couch covered with quilted pillows. I had that look once but my dog has claimed the couch as his own with all his dog blankets. Lol
This November is turning out so mild. I think my leaves got mulched today by the lawn mower.
Thank you all for sharing your photos.
Carolyn – at one time I had a lovely white couch with two white chairs which gave way to a husband and several dogs. I miss my white furniture.
Lucky you, Carolyn, with your mild weather! We’re still out in Colorado for my husband’s work, and we have had more than 20 inches of snow in the past 2 days and sub-freezing temperatures. I am so done with winter, and it’s still the first week of November LOL
My problem is I save the whole magazine even though there may be only one quilt pattern or photo I need to save–lol. I could move right into that room:)
Lots of beautiful. bright quilts today, thank you, Mary. I do enjoy the blog!! Keeper and Greta(?) not sure, look comfortable together. We never had trouble with our Irish Setter and kitties. He just let them run all over him or sleep on him. Great dog:)
NIce here again today. 64* now.
Lots of beautiful quilts over the last few posts. The big leaf quilt was especially striking!
I was lucky enough to attend the Houston quilt show a couple of years, the quilts are absolutely stunning and executed perfectly. No missing points or mismatched seams! And of course the vendors are plentiful with beautiful quilt kits for sale. I still have many of the kits to complete, God willing I will get them done.
Yes we have freedom of speech but the two subjects we should never discuss are politics and religion.
First night of frost on our lawn and our air quality has gone into the unhealthy range. We must have something trapped close to the ground and no wind to move it out.
Today’s quilt show was outstanding. So many color combos, patterns, sizes, and designs stitched in. I love seeing how others take time to decorate.
Thanks for the neutral site. I am so glad it is finally over. Too much bashing and too many ads. Your blog is a reprieve, a safe zone.
Today I am delivering 38 lap/warm hug size quilt tops, backings and bindings included, to a local group that supplies them to shut-ins, foster care, Ronald McDonald House, etc. They finish and distribute where needed.
The magazine picture seems to be a timeless look. That blue and white combo is beautiful and I am glad you kept the picture and preserved it.
Laundry and errands, then having dinner and beverages with friends. Husband is having a Subway sandwich for his meal. No cooking. I get a night out!
Not my best day yesterday, but the time change has also kicked my behind. My granddaughter moved to Texas and forgot to change her registration, so flew home to vote! Good citizen there. I got to have supper with her on her 2 day visit. I’m rearranging my sewing studio, found shelves that will work with my sloped ceiling, bought the good wheels for them. I’m just starting, but I’m liking the results. When husband retired he realized that being home was not what he thought it would be. We lunched out, visited quilt shops, I had fabric but he helped increase it! So now I’m going into it with a vengeance so I can really see what I have. I was able to empty 5 totes of backing fabric onto one of the shelving units. I try to not do more than a couple hours of straightening at a time, don’t want to burn out before it’s done. I love the magazines, I worked in a bookstore and read alot of them. But they’re not what they used to be. My biggest time for them is now, when the Christmas decorated houses are showing up. The sun is shining. Have a Great Day!
Dee – somebody raised that granddaughter right if she flew home to vote! Was this her first election to vote in?
Loved the picture of Keeper and your cat cuddled up on the chair together!
I spent a good part of yesterday in the ER after fainting in a restaurant. It’s a long story, but my blood pressure went way low and I passed out on my way into the rest room. Fortunately my husband was with me and was supporting me on the way down. (He doesn’t usually go with me to a public rest room lol, but did this time because I was feeling faintish.) I have lost seventeen pounds, on purpose, and I think my blood pressure meds need to be adjusted because my pressure dropped to a very low level. In the process of all that, I pulled a muscle in the back of my knee, so now it is difficult to get up out of a chair or off the toilet. Ugh!
Our guild is having a quilt show this weekend. I will have three quilts in it and will be working in it both days. It’s always so much fun.
Sue – I hope they give you a “sitting” job and not a standing or walking job. I’ll bet your weight loss might have cancelled out your high blood pressure. I think that possible, isn’t it?
hi all. the quilts are all beautiful. thanks for sharing. so many ideas for decorating and just for making. i love it when mary does this.
i’ve been a bit discombobulated this week. i’m sure it’s the time change. hits me worse in the fall than in the spring. i think it is the fact that it gets dark so soon. i guess i work better in daylight and tend to wind down as it gets dark. it gets dark too soon. i am glad to see that the numbers of emails in my inbox and on my phone have decreased by hundreds. really glad about that.
still have another challenge quilt to work on (blue/cream pineapple blocks) but i don’t really know what i want to do. probably part of being off so far this week.
looks like mr. ed will retire at the end of the year for real. he could probably fight it and win. my question was ‘do you want to retire or do you want to keep working?’ the answer ‘i don’t know.’ work has pretty much been in his life and i don’t think he knows what to do. i suggested he take up cooking lessons so we can eat better. i’m still not cooking yet. so quick sandwiches i can do while sitting or take-out.
i’m seriously considering downsizing my fabric collection. i mainly work with scraps and or smaller cuts so i don’t need all these pieces that are 5+ yards. maybe doing that will help me feel better. i don’t mind sharing the ‘wealth’ with those who need it. it’s just a question of being able to get upstairs to stay and work. maybe as it cools off it will be easier – it is still in mid 80s and they are predicting 90s again. it’s cooler downstairs.
off to figure out how to occupy myself. have a great day all. patti in florida
Patti – I wish I could come and help you get that fabric downstairs. What does Mr. Ed do for work? Retirement is hard for men – women just keep working as usual.
mary, if only it were so easy to get my fabric downstairs. there is nowhere to put it down here. my studio consists of a master bedroom, a bedroom (for the longarm) and a huge open area that is larger than my living room. there are shelves on all the walls, etc. i have more than enough for several lifetimes. thanks for the offer tho. patti in florida
Patti, do you have a closet or a place to put a shelving unit so you could have some fabric nearby? If only you could have an opportunity to have your fabric closer. You are the most creative and determined, plus, you are doing so many projects to completion! I envy your ambition! Where there’s a will maybe there is a way for you. Take care!
Oh, wow. Tumbler blocks? The layout for the large maple leaves is a winner for sure. Gray and aqua is a fetching combination. I wish I had a full view of the checkerboard. I am making two now.
I actually googled Montgomery Ward— it does exist. I really didn’t believe it.
Lots of nice quilts for show today. It is so fun to see what everyone has made!
I have saved a lot of magazines and clippings too. Never made anything so decided to get rid of them. I did save all my Quilt Sampler magazines- many shops are no longer in business. It is the memories and how styles have changed.
I’ve gotten rid of most of my quilting magazines, but still have every Quilt Sampler magazine. I’m not sure what I’ll ever do with them, as I rarely look at any of them. It’s true, many of the featured shops in Quilt Sampler are gone now.
Love the quilts today! Such a nice fall display! I for one am so happy there’s no more political adds on TV! I resent having to pay for TV & have these adds on one after the other! I used the mute button on the selector a lot! I finally have a day that I can sit & sew all day. I spent one day opening a few boxes that have been packed away since I moved here 6 yrs ago. I threw away 3/4 of the items in those boxes! Still looking for all the nuts & bolts that go to my quilt frame! Friends didn’t pack things like I did! No rhyme or reason to many boxes! But I appreciated the help. Certainly not something I could have done by myself! Sigh….
We got back from Iowa Tuesday evening. We closed up the house for the winter. We spent yesterday at the hospital as my MIL had hip surgery. She is a month from turning 90. Now the recovery process begins.
Today my youngest grandson is getting tubes in his ears.
The blog is a good distraction for me. Love all of the quilts today. Lots of eye candy.
And the cats and succulents card is great! And pets curled up together in a chair – so cozy!
I need to work on an email to Mary with pictures of the Iowa house. A good thing to keep me busy while doing laundry and hospital visits.
Susan k – yes, I can’t wait to see the Iowa house – our weather is so nice right now that it’s hard to believe it will soon be winter – actual winter.
Haha, not neutral but I try to be quiet. I hate confrontation. Anyway, I’m glad it’s over! I love all of the quilts today, so many that I’d love to know how to do. That one on the back of the couch, with all of the triangles, wow! And Keeper looks as if he’s listening – “what’s Hazel up to?”. What a cute card that is, I wonder if the sender made it? Love the blue room! It’s still warm here in New England! Jan in MA
Dense fog this morning!
I am having sew day here since I wasn’t home for usual Tuesday sew day and our group sew day at the church was canceled. Lunch out.
Loved the quilts today! It’s the best part of my morning with coffee to see what everyone is doing. Actually my tastes vary and I enjoy seeing how others decorate, what you all read, and eat, etc. But have to say one thing–I am not neutral! ha
Good for you Mary being neutral! Me on the other hand had a crappie day yesterday and neutral is not something I can be! But the bright side to this is all the political TV ads are gone YAY!
It’s been beautiful weather here in Michigan! Crazy warm for November. Everywhere I look I see work, outside, inside 😐 Sometimes there’s not enough energy in my day to accomplish what I really want to get done. I miss my high energy days lol
I too have magazines that I love. I have a stack now that I need to look at. I look at them and rip out what I like and recycle the rest. Magazines l’m afraid are almost a thing of the past. Everything is electronic but I love getting mine in the mail or going to the grocery store and looking at the magazine rack. I’m old school lol
Have a great day everyone! Be kind to yourself and carry on ♥️
Jo – I, too, love magazines and have stacks of them! Do you remember my collection of Country Living magazines? Every copy for over 30 years!! On the subject of neutral – do you remember a few months ago there were some political comments that caused dissension? It wasn’t a good look for this blog – this is the blog about nothing – no drama and I hope to keep it that way.
Mary, I do remember the discussion a few months ago on politics. I understand why you are neutral. You have to be for the well being of the blog. I was always taught growing up in certain circles never talk politics or religion. I try my best to follow that golden rule. Sometimes I fail. Your blog is a wonderful place to chill and drink my coffee. I feel a connection with the blog family. Thank you for being there ♥️
Great quilts again today! Mary Beth, what a super collection of fall quilts. I especially like the leaf quilt. Mary, the magazine photo of the BLUE room would have been one I saved too. It is so fun to look at and full of ideas. I recently cleared out many of the “idea pages” I had saved through the years and it was interesting to see how my style and favorites had gradually changed.
Sandy, I hope you sleep well tonight!
Neutral is also my middle name. Thank you for keeping your blog politics and controversy free! Your blog is always a safe place to be.
Sheryl – thank you! Another blog owner chided me when I wrote that I wouldn’t touch politics with a ten foot pole – she reminded me of our freedom of speech. So what’s right for me may not be right for someone else.
Yes! Thank you, Mary, for the neutral zone!
Love the 2 quilts together Mary Beth from Missouri. The contrast is beautiful.
I arrived in Austin area yesterday. Here for 1 week visiting my stepdaughter and her husband.
Has anyone participated in the Missouri Star’s Christmas box? One of my girlfriends saw the contents last year and we decided to buy it this year. I had it sent here to my stepdaughter here and she brought it over yesterday. Can’t wait to start opening it next month.
Pattie – and how are the dogs?
You were not the only one that saves magazines and magazines I have so many pictures of rooms that I love or quilts that I love, and then the whole Magazine itself.
The quilt in today’s post are beautiful too as far as the election neutral to
Morning this sunny chilly morning to all. Love the picture of Keeper and the kitty I think may be Three. I love when my Bette curls up with Nelson. They are both black so you can’t tell where one ends and one begins.
Mary, your fabulous quilt with your favorite red fabric and nine patches has possessed me, it’s one of those quilt patterns that I need to have and hopefully make sooner than later. Is that one of your patterns or can you give me a name so I can try to find it. I have plenty of fabric!
Love the quilt photos this morning. Curling up on the couch on a chilly day wrapped in a quilt is a real treat.
When Magnus and Klaus lay together it’s just one black blob. I know exactly what you mean. 🙂
Linda – the red quilt does not have a pattern – it’s just 9 patches set on point. Squares for 9 patches were cut 1-1/2”
You’re not the only one who saves magazine pictures. I have a couple dozen three ring binders with magazine pictures and articles in saved in page protectors that I have had for years. (My form of Pinterest before Pinterest.) I love looking at the binders of quilts and craft projects and decorating ideas.
So many inspiring quilts again today. Thanks , everyone, for sharing.
I used to save pictures of quilts I wanted to make and rooms I loved and put them into binders. Then I realized I never made those quilts or decorated like those rooms, so I have gotten rid of all of that as part of my Swedish Death Cleaning, which I have been doing quite earnestly since we moved to a 55+ community seven years ago. It feels really good to clear out the unwanted and unused. I am trying to do the same with my sewing room. I have a large shopping bag of fabric for my monthly philanthropy quilting group, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface. It will take some time to really tackle my stash, but I will do it a little at a time. We have several people in our guild who also sew philanthropy quilts and need fabric. I like to give it to them also.
Love all the quilts today! Mary Beth, would you mind sharing the size of squares in your leaf quilt? I can chart it out but I’d like to know how big that square is. What a great quilt that is, and I’d love to make it!
Mary Beth, I’d love to have the pattern name & designer for that gorgeous leaf quilt on your sofa. Your quilts are so beautiful!
So many wonderful quilts today. Love the picture of Keeper and Three. They look so comfy together. We hope to clear off the hosta beds today, after dealing with tree leaves again yesterday. Our neighbor has pine trees with lots of fallen pine needles that we want to gather for our iris bed as mulch. Yes, pine needles have worked as mulch for several years. I worried that they would change the soil pH as they decomposed, causing the irises to not do well. But we continue to have bountiful blooms each spring and it sure helps with weed control and moisture retention. The same has worked for our peonies for years.
The last rainy day I had hoped to quilt, but just didn’t have the motivation. I put a small quilt on the longarm frame, but that is as far as I got. That was last Sunday. I use as my excuse that I was tired because of the time change to standard time. We are to have rain on Saturday, so maybe I will be motivated then. Enjoy your fall days.
Hi Mary, just been and had wires strapped to chest, legs, finger, watch on arm, nose tube’s and recorder on chest for sleep test, will l sleep tonight, l hope so!Fed up with falling asleep all afternoon. I had a friend visit for the afternoon, so that was nice, lots of looking at old quilts. Three and Keeper look comfortable together. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – your sleep test! I should probably have one – I don’t sleep well. Will you tell us the results?
If I eat sugar it will make me fall asleep. So rather than waste a half hour in the afternoon I eat a few ounces of roasted chicken instead. Fasting blood sugar levels have always been 95 or less so it is good to keep an eye on it.
