The Day Just Disappeared

I’ve been trying to write this post all day and it’s nearly 9 pm! Just got home from choir practice so I’ll write a few things and save the rest for morning.

I had a Medicare Wellness appointment this morning. I didn’t realize I was this old – I was asked if I could take care of myself, if I had fallen recently and if I had a formal exercise program. I said not unless you call carrying feed, pails of water and bales of hay a structured exercise program. Hahaha!

Reed had an early out today so he got here right about 1 pm and started sewing his log cabin blocks together.

It’s beginning to take shape and he’s pretty excited! He doesn’t know if he’s going to add borders or not but we’ll have to piece the back either way.

I think I’ll kick back and finish this post tomorrow morning.

I found a couple of ads to click!! Yay! It always puts a smile on my face when I see a Country Threads email. I had a busy day – son #3 Tom had a dr appointment yesterday to see what kind of knee surgery to have and they said they had an opening for this morning – so scramble…and mom (me) ended up taking him and bringing him home to our house after to rest before going home to his 2 and 4 year olds. Tomorrow I am back at Mayo clinic to take hubs in for a stress test. The week started out with nothing going on. Last Wednesday/Thursday we (hubs and me) cleaned off our roof – good thing, it looks like we will have another big bunch of snow this weekend too! Al has been cleaning out a neighbor’s driveway since he has been getting cancer treatments and can’t manage, now with Tom’s knee surgery and 6 weeks of crutches, likely he will be cleaning that driveway as well. Today our other next door neighbor said he was going to Mississippi to work on tornado cleanup – could Al clean their driveway when it snows? Yikes. LOL – as the saying goes when it rains it pours…or rather when it snows, it blizzards!!

Well darn. I clicked some ads – and then wrote a long comment but it disappeared!! This is a test to see if this one posts.

Tell Reed his quilt is awesome! Really great job!
My Dr. didn’t think gardening was exercise either. Ha!

I’ve had the same Wellness appointment. I have to laugh at those questions. I’ve been clicking on ads when I see them. I was looking at some older posts and clicked on those ads, too. I look forward to the post tomorrow. Reed’s quilt looks great. I like his choice of colors. Looks another blue ribbon winner! Good night.

I love reading all your posts…having run a kindergarten and pre-school for 31 years called Yankee Doodle Farm we have a bit in common…feeding and caring for farm animals..growing and cooking with the kids and actually teaching them to sew (not on a machine but creative yarn and burlap pictures) Just wanted
to thank you for your blog💝

mary, go ahead and take the rest of the night off. haha reed is doing great with his log cabin.
i managed to get into your pinterest account to look for that one project from probably quite a bit ago. did i write a date down? of course not. i think i may have forgotten something. so today i took my long pieces apart at the halfway point. they had been 9.5 x 16.5″. i will press them again and cut them into 4.5″ squares. i will be sure to take a picture when i get it going further. i also may be mixing up two different patterns in my head. it’s easy for me to do that. off to hope for sleep. patti in florida

WOW! Reid is quite an excellent piecer. How lucky he is to have you as a mentor, Mary. His quilt will be the hit of the fair this summer.

  12. Ann Barlament

Reed has become an accomplished quilter! Love the colors in his blocks!!!!

  13. Nancy

Do you and Connie still do programs? We are a guild on the Kansas -Oklahoma boarder

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Nancy – anything we might have to say is old news! But thanks for asking!

  14. Arrowhead Gramma

Totally understand about the exercise. I told my doctor I shovel snow and emailed photos. LOL. There are so many different and unique ways to get your exercise. ❤️🧵❤️

  15. Linda James

Mary, did they ask you to remember three words and draw hands on the clock face? I’d say you have an over the top exercise program!!
Reed’s quilt is really looking good. He should be excited!

  16. Sharon Lowy

I had my wellness test on Monday. They make me feel so old. I hope you came out without problems. Did you remember the 3 words? I did. Wondering what they will think of next to make us feel so useless.

I love Reed’s quilt!!! I adore log cabin quilts cause no two are ever alike using scraps. I kept wondering when we would get a sneak peak at his sewing adventures with you. Thanks for sharing. And yes Mary you get more exercise than most women do paying membership to a gym! I once had a wise woman doctor who has since left and gone to the VA as she felt compelled to end her career in that part of health care but I loved her attitude. She said if I didn’t hire a cleaning crew to clean my own house then that exercise alone is all I needed at my age! I am sure you can attest to that after this week.

Kathy in western NY – I also love her attitude! I don’t think I ever sit in a chair for an hour straight!

      1. Launa

Mary, I saw the physician’s assistant pre my last cataract surgery and she pulled out THE TEST, asked if I was ready to take to take it? I told her no! I thought it a waste of OUR time. A friend of mine took her’s home! That wasn’t possible so I passed on the test!

Reed’s quilt is really coming right along and looks great. A treasure for sure!

A snowy 30 degrees this morning. Pepper has been out numerous times playing in it!

  18. Jeanne H

Wow! Love how Reed is setting the blocks. It’s going to be an amazing quilt! : )

  19. Dianne Cook

Looks like Reed got a haircut. He sure is growing up. The quilt is starting to take shape on the design wall. Very nice.

I think you and Reed’s relationship is amazing !!!
Mentoring is such a long lasting part of a person ‘s memory when we get older. I cherish the time I shared with a teacher I had in 2nd grade who came to my wedding and I loved her in so many ways. As I was dating I would take men I was serious about to meet her. She would be cordial and then next day I would go see her and tell me why good or bad. When I took my further husband she said,” you should marry him because he drinks tea even though he didn’t like it to make us happy”. She was right as we were married 47 years before cancer took him. They were both very special.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Angie – loved your story about your mentor – gave me goosebumps!

    Sandy

  24. Frances Carter

Oh my what an awesome job Reed is doing in his life cabin quilt! It is beautiful! Can’t wait to see it finished.

    Hi Mary –

I am sure somewhere it was mentioned how you and Reed are related – but I either forgot or simply never knew. Is he a grandson or ??? He seems like such a neat kid and such a fun adventurer to have with you on your excursions! I absolutely love your blog and the pictures you share!! Those of yours and Connie’s “stash” are simply amazing!!!!!

Tell Reed his Log Cabin looks great so far. I have yet to make a log cabin quilt yet I have always loved them. I must make one this year. What are those two white patches on the left side of his quilt?

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Sue in Oregon – white patches are row numbers written down.

  27. Starrla Opferman

Reed’s log cabin is beautiful. Love the setting. It is a wonderful relationship you two have.

  28. Sue in Oregon

Good Morning, Mary. Tell Reed his quilt is stunning. He will surely win a blue with it. Higher, if they have them there. He has given me the inspiration to make one too. I am curious about those two white squares on the left side of the quilt? Are they post-it notes?
The Medi-care wellness visits make me feel old, too. I am old, but that just reinforces the fact.

  29. Jane Busby

My grandsons love to sew!! Ages 11 and 9. Their sister age 5 also loves to sew. They can all thread machine, wind bobbins, change feet, and sew a perfect quarter inch seam. They are currently working on a joint project of a strip quilt for their mom for her birthday! All their idea! They come once a week and work on it. They love seeing the farm pictures you post.

  30. Kathy Hanson

What a beautiful quilt Reed is making!! He is amazing and how fortunate for him to have such a wonderful mentor! Do tell him that you have lots of messages telling him how beautiful it is!! He will get a purple ribbon at the fair with this one for sure!!!

  31. Brenda archambault

Reed’s quilt is beautiful, and you are beautiful for mentoring him so nicely. I still remember my 4-H leader from 70+ years ago who taught us how to sew, and my home-ec teacher from almost that many years ago who recently passed away, but was my mentor and friend to the very end. My daughter has told me that some of the 4-H girls in our own club tell her they appreciate what I taught them 50 years ago. What goes around comes around.

    1. Kathy in NY

Brenda, I too hear from my daughters friends all the good memories they have of our 4-H meetings when I was their leader. It makes me so happy they remember our activites and hands on lessons with sincerity. All that preparation for deadlines of fair, public speaking, cooking contests, camp applications, etc pays off as they go out into the real world.

Mary, I’ve been meaning to take time and let you know how much both you and Reed benefit from your relationship, and to thank you for taking the time to find fun things for the two of you to do. I’m a retired 5th grade teacher who still gets tears in her eyes to hear of what you do in your time together. It is truly win/win for both of you. I miss my students more than I can tell, and always found some special friends in my classroom who needed a bond with a loving, caring adult. I coordinate our homebound ministry at church and find that people of all ages and kinds need people like you in their lives. I find that God puts us where we are needed; it’s up to us to recognize and act on that. Blessings coming your way.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Pam Nichols, Waterloo – thank for such encouraging thoughts!

  33. Jackie Baumhauer

    Mary
Reed’s quilt is beautiful! I’m sure he will be getting a blue ribbon. He could be your grandson…you two look like your related.

  34. Felicia Hamlin

Wow! I love Reed’s quilt. Of course he has a teacher extraordinaire, good for the two of you! Yesterday I couldn’t post a mess@ge, so I am glad I could do it today. Hope your hand is better.
