The Wedge Quilt, 3-19-25

We’ve been living inside a blizzard all day giving me lots of time to finish this project … which is questionable as to how I feel about it right now.

When piecing the wedges, there’s definitely a right way…

And a wrong way.

See how the top and bottom don’t fit nicely? They hang off the edges. Not good.
See how the bottom points are the same? The 1/4” seam will intersect right below the pin.

12 wedges across by 7 rows down

My charm pack had 42 squares.

Everything was fine until I finished piecing the wedges leaving this odd shaped piece left from each charm.

In my quest to use every inch of each charm, I cut the 1-1/2” square from the corner leaving these two goofy pieces leftover.

Now what?

So here’s where the quilt goes off the tracks – because I didn’t know when to quit. Haha! I pieced those two odd triangles leftover from the last cut.

I had to add the 1-1/2” strip on the lower right side to finish.

And after I looked at it I hated it and changed it to blue.

This became an improv quilt – I cannot write directions for those borders. If I could have seen the finished quilt before I sewed the borders I would have done things differently but this is how it ended up. If I had quit after the wedges I’d have been happy with the finished quilt but you do what you wish. And then show us what you did!

Here is today at our house. The highway that goes by here was completely closed today because of a garbage truck in the ditch and a semi jackknifed – at least that’s what I understand. We couldn’t even SEE the highway so I knew roads were not good. Don’t know why people think they should be out driving in weather like today. And any picture I would have taken would have turned out to be just white!

After the storm

Not really too much snow but heavy and wet and will be a mess to clean up.

Just a word about the previous March Madness quilt. A pair of charms RST yields 2 blocks. I don’t know how many charm packs because some did not contain 40 charms. Figure out how big you want your quilt and figure from there. I can’t/won’t do all the figuring for you.

March Madness tomorrow – see you then!

I love that improv quilt, I wish I could have the confidence to just try something new. I have become so anal that I dont stray very much from the patterns I have.

I love seeing all the quilts that others make. I am going to start doing some 3 yard quilts for donations.

Clever use of charm squares. So creative. I love what you share with us. And your improv designing.
That blizzard must have been something. I lived in Cedar Rapids during record breaking years, and in Conneaut, Ohio (northeast of Cleveland) when the snows were blown up to the the roofs in some areas. That was back in 1977 and 1978. I was young and adventurous. No more! My husband was from Grand Rapids MI and never afraid to drive in the snow. He drove a BP gas truck. I miss having his bravery beside me.

Your snow is probably disappearing already, right? We didn’t get a flake or a drop. That was a nasty storm. We did get the wind!
Those wedges aren’t the easiest to sew, it looks like. Looks nice when it is finished!

Joy – yes, it’s muddy and puddles all over – Hank and keeper have found every one! Ha! What a difference between two days!!

Mary I hope you didn’t waste time scooping….jay always says the ‘girls’ will take care of this time of year…April, May and June😂
We would have liked the precipitation but not sad we didn’t get the terrible storm causing downed lines etc.

Joy – nope! Just down the sidewalk so I could get to the shop – love the “girls” – I gotta remember that. Buffalo Center got some ungodly amount like 12” but I don’t think we had 2-3 even.

I’ve always wanted to try an improv quilt & your quilt makes the best use of incorporating every last bit of useable fabric. Warm & cloudy here today. I spent lots of time working on my indoor plants. I can’t wait to move them all outside again where they thrive.

I really like how your improv quilt turned out . Truly one of a kind and the muted colors are beautiful.
We got about 6 inches of snow out of yesterday’s storm. Bright sunshine now on this first day of spring. Robins came too early once again.
I’m thinking of doing some sewing today instead of continuing on my decluttering. I just got the Country Threads Split Squares pattern and may start on that. Your Bullseye quilt is still is my favorite quilt that I’ve made. Thought I would give your squares version a try. Thanks for the tips on sewing wedges together.

Love that quilt. Good advice. I like what you did with the border too.

As for the storm, only lost power for an hr or so. Not much snow here. My dental appt canceled as Dr. can’t get into the office. Ha So I get to play today at home. I was actually pinning and ready to sew a seam yesterday when power went out. Not sure I will continue with that or work on the long arm.

Those dogs of yours are gonna love to play outside today. I know I would if I was a dog! We have sunshine today.

I’m hoping we had all our snow when you were bone dry. It was 77 record high and sunny here yesterday. 60 today and drops through the weekend to our normal March temperatures of 44.
I have a bag of gray and orange flannel pieces to cut wedges from for a camping themed quilt. I appreciate the points tip for lining up. Didn’t occur to me till you showed the picture of the difference. I’m a visual learner for sure.
Thanks to everyone who helped me decide I will be looking into making my own fruit filling for recipes. We have so many fruit farms around us to shop at. My grandmother always had kuchens/ danish for breakfast so I like having them for remembering her but $8 is a bit much to pay if I can devise a base recipe and my own fruit topping. It sounded like canning a jar is the best route.

It didn’t start snowing here until 3 pm or so. The wind is horrible again. It’s now 10 pm, appears the snow is done and there’s about 2″. I was out earlier, pushed snow off my ramp, but it’s just at freezing so with the wind the ramp and deck are slick. I’m hoping to go to town tomorrow to meet friends for lunch, and dinner with stitching friends.

This is the best example of a “no piece left behind” quilt top that is colorful. Good charm pak to start with for sure.
That snowfall was the most wet and heavy ever on Tuesday. Had to stop using the snow blower because it was blowing out 6″x6″ and larger chunks of ice at 22 degrees. Now it is melting fast. Wretched driving conditions.
