Here is Diane’s, of Diane and Squeak fame, memory from 1999:
The first time my friends took me to an actual quilt shop in Columbus, OH, they were talking about wear warm clothes. It was January so I asked if the shop was not heated!! They still talk about that and it was about 1996!!

HOT here this whole week—no need for warm clothes:)
Such a great story, DIANE!

Our good friend Moe Baly from Illinois organized a group of quilters to visit Country Threads for a class at the Ed Center to make Wear Warm Clothes. They certainly must have had part of it done when they arrived!

Did you know we wrote a quilt book called Dear Emma?

The original barn when I moved in – looks pretty shabby so it took lots of restoration, inside as well as out. I’m glad to have this picture for comparison to now.

Reader photos

Today I took a picture of the original Wear Warm Clothes – and I still love it!

Here’s one of my new favorite pictures!!

This afternoon I let Dottie and Sarah explore the pasture and they loved it. They have the same grass in their pen but you know the old saying – the grass is always greener on the other side of the street! Or the fence in this case. Haha!

I wish you could have seen them run! Dottie’s ears were flopping up and down with each gallop. I’m going to let them out tomorrow, too, which means the chicks will be free to go to that area, too. Makes me nervous.
I got a thank you card from the Lovelaces that you so willingly sent cards to – 137 cards to date! THANK YOU for making this card ministry so successful – they were overwhelmed by your generous spirit and well wishes.
Diane sent me this Metropolitan Museum of Art card and asked if this would be my next quilt. Hahaha! In another lifetime maybe. Made in 1850 – unbelievable.

And Judy in AZ included a bandaid in my birthday card! Haha!! It’s pretty obvious I need it. I have a dr. appointment in the morning about my leg. I’ll let you know what he says. It has started to hurt and it hadn’t before.

So Wear Warm Clothes has been locked into Country Threads since 1993 and to the best of my knowledge has not been copied. The other quilt that is 100% Country Threads is Bullseye but I can’t say the same regarding copyright – it’s been copied hundreds and hundreds of times.
Say Good Night, Mary!
Good Night!

Ask your doc about DuoDerm CGF dressings. Pricey but terrific!
I loved the photos of Wear Warm Clothes. And enjoyed Diane’s story.
So very warm in southeast Michigan as elsewhere. Heat index 112* today.
Looks like the goats were having a great time!
Take care. 🌻
Mary, I’m allergic to adhesive tape, too, and it’s been added to my medical record. I’m not allergic to any medications that I’m aware of, but the rash I get from the adhesive tape that’s normally used is awful. When I remind them of my allergy, the “other” tape comes out — no hesitation or comment.
Well this is a post I am going to save. Wear warm clothes pictures are as fun for me to look at as is your Bulleyes quilts. So unique and different color choices. I like your border. This morning after reading your post I had to go looking for my wear warm clothes pattern book and sure enough it was in a container with the fabrics I already pulled for it. My favorite part of making a quilt. Just not cut out or sewn so I need to get better about my UFOs. I have a nice piece of your fabric titled Barn dance I believe. So one thing led to another and I have sewing stuff on my floor I need to go pick up before I go to bed!
Kathy – oh, I do understand! My sewing room looks like it’s under construction right now – I have to clean before I can sew. Ugh. And since I hate that I’m stymied!
They also did a love offering for them at the commmunity reception and they received a nice amount of money. That will really help with expenses driving to and from her treatments, and sometimes they need to get a hotel as well.
Hi Mary, I’m glad you enjoyed the photos…like Diane I was in Columbus OH on a quilt bus trip with my sister Geri. 1992, the shop was the Daisy Barrel. We saw your original book about your farm and shop, we told our bus leader, “We want to go to Country Threads next bus trip…It’s on a FARM!” Nora made the arrangements to go, then WWC book came out, so I told everyone who signed up for the bus trip they had to buy the book, then for a year, every month I snail mailed a note to say, “Make This Biock This Month”, not realizing I had invented the BOM. Ha ha ha! You can see a third of the bus made the WWC quilt to bring to show you and Connie. We were so excited to visit your farm, show you our quilts, and take a class too…which was the star quilt Emma is sitting on. I am still friends with everyone from that bus trip, we went on 20 bus trips over the years, and went to a retreat in MI for 25 years, and now we are doing 2 retreats a year at a local shop. You could say that Country Threads WWC pattern bonded up as Friends Forever.
What a wonderful memory you all share.
You were lucky to visit the Daisy Barrel. I didn’t know it attracted bus trips. It was located in the town I live in. I was so lucky to be able to visit the Daisy Barrel about once per week, and to visit Country Threads a few times per year. Daisy Barrel has been gone for some time. The group of women that owned it retired. I took several quilt classes at Daisy Barrel.
Hi Beryl, the Daisy Barrel was a fantastic shop. We were all so excited to go there from Chicago on a bus! I remember we went into a book store across the street where I bought the book “Chocolate Covered Cherries” about a famous chocolate candy shop in OH. I ordered chocolates from that store many times.
BerylBC – you should explain how we know each other some time – I think they’d be interested.
Moe – your “story” bring tears to my eyes! Yes, I do believe you invented the BOM!!! Haha! Somewhere I have pictures of you getting off the bus and strolling around the farm. I guess I had never heard that the “farm” is what tempted you to come here. Thanks for the memories!
I forgot to say that I love that picture of Sophie. She is a hoot, but she sticks up for her teammates. Thanks for sharing it. I had not seen it.
Jeanine – you can get it on tshirts now and much more! She’s great!!
Love Sophie!! I have lots of your books, but don’t think I have Wear Warm Clothes, but right now I can’t get to my books to check. You & Connie really put out some wonderful patterns & books! You both are very talented. Your goats are absolutely living their best lives on your farm. What a beautiful transformation on your barn! It did look a bit rough when you bought the farm. Love the red siding & the flag you had painted on the front. Love all the quilts that have been shared, always great eye candy. You’ve done a lot of work on your home as well. Beautiful & peaceful! So glad you saw the Dr about your leg & glad all you need is an antibiotic. Happy Birthday, Mary!
Happy Anniversary! Happy Birthday later in the month! So much happening! Heal up that leg and put on your dancing shoes! 🙂
I just love seeing all the Wear Warm Clothes quilts. They are such an inspiration. I don’t have that pattern but have so many quilts all set up I need to get those done before adding more.
It’s a chilly 56F here today, a week ago it was 90. What a difference. I’m sitting on my covered porch, with a blanket on, our overhead heater on, and a coffee. We have two hummingbird feeders on two of the posts for the glass roof and I am watching about 8 hummingbirds jockey each other to have a drink. They all could be on the feeders but none want to share except just once this morning two went to one feeder opposite of each other and both drank. They are so tiny and so cute. Mama Junco is sitting on her eggs in the nest she made in my hanging basket. I try not to look too much so she doesn’t fly away. What an enjoyable morning, even if it is cold.
Mary the antibiotics should work soon on your leg.
Today is Canada’s birthday. Too cold and rainy to go to any festivities.
If ever there was a quilt that perfectly depicted why I no longer live in Iowa, Wear Warm Clothes is IT!
So glad you went to the doctor and got an antibiotic. I’ve been thinking about you and hoping you were mending from all of your calamities.
I was going to look online and find your book but decided to search my stash first and lo and behold-I already had the book. Yeah! I have all of my Country Threads books stored together. I’ll never live long enough to make even a fraction of them, but I sure enjoy looking through them. You and Connie were a very creative team,
Enjoyed all of the photos today. Loved the picture of Sophie. If it were made into a poster, it would be a hot seller.
Hot and windy here today. Should be our last day of harvest if the day goes as planned and Im looking forward to eating meals in an air conditioned kitchen instead of a hot field.
Mary, what a great post! I loved reading about “Wear Warm Clothes” and seeing all the fantastic photos. It made me wonder what your favorite quilts you have made over the years would be. I am thinking that “Wear Warm Clothes” would make the list!
Have a wonderful birthday!!!
Thank you for the memory trip!!! Your shop/farm was so amazing when I visited so many years ago! I absolutely loved it. I hope your leg isn’t in serious difficulty! I love all the Wear Warm Clothes that they all made. Take care and keep us informed regarding your injury.
I am so glad you are going to the doctor about your cuts. Shouldn’t take those lightly. Always hard to remember when you’ve had a tetanus shot last.
My visit with my sister came to an end yesterday. She came for two weeks from Colorado. Got stranded in Salt Lake City because of high winds in Denver. Too many planes diverted and she said their plane was running low on fuel.
My daughter’s wedding was June 27 in Cleveland. Lucky it was before the heat wave. It all went smoothly and was fun to share with my sister. My daughter sat me next to her at the head table. I was so surprised. She didn’t have bridesmaids as such, just 8 friends who all wore black and crowns of flowers. She called them her bride tribe. Since my daughter Sara is 48, most of her friends are older, married with children. All very sweet. At the head table it was the bride and groom’s family. The groom’s family are all from Ireland. They were a fun bunch!
Wow, Mary, I’m happy you are going in with your owie! Mary, you and Connie are so cute! And yes, i would like to weigh what i did in the 90s too. And have thick hair. But, life happens.
I’m going to the doc this morning too. My top cover on my incision is really burning my skin. When I had back surgery, it took about this long for that to act up then too.
Rain report! We had a lot of heavy wind and rain and another 1.8 inches! So that is about 5 inches since Sunday morning! The creek is full again. Brother-in-law in spirit lake had .4. He said there was some damage along west side of west lake Okoboji. Hope Connie is ok.
Storms every night are wearing me out!
Sandy (daughter) was here with Ranger the golden. She took him to the vet again. They did an ultrasound and blood work. Bloodwork was fine but there is a big lump about the size of a cantaloupe pressing on his stomach. He does not appear to be in pain. He thought it was great stuff to be at grandma and grandpas all by himself. They gave him some Zantac thinking he may have heartburn from it. And said to allow him all the treats he would like! 💕. Ranger is 9.
So much for today. Hope your wound isn’t serious Mary! I can almost see those ears flopping on the goat 🥰
Joy – at the pharmacy now picking up an antibiotic – no big deal. Such a nuisance!!! Oh, we have both aged big time but what could we expect???? It’s a shock to see those pictures . I’m always allergic to the incision tape/covering. So what’s going to happen with Ranger? Surgery or just know it’s terminal? Ugh
Well, I got pt on antibiotic too for the reaction to the tape! Then I had therapy! He’s not really tough on me, but, my body has not been able to do good exercise like walking and normal things for 6 years with first my back and now this. It will take! My legs are a real wet noodle! And I get light headed after therapy.
I’m glad the doc thinks he can heal up your owie with antibiotic.
I doubt they will do surgery on ranger. He does not act like he’s in pain. Still goes for walks and rides in the golf cart. His blood work is ok so it would seem it is benign. They could do a biopsy, but that involves a lot of complication’s because of where it is. He is 9 and a purebred so his lifespan isn’t real great. If he would be in pain, it could be different. The other yellow they have is 10 and does not want to walk anymore. They were like born from the same mother with different fathers. You’d think we r talking about kids. But they are their kids! 💕
Whatever that adhesive is, it eats skin and burns like crazy. When I reported it to the doctor and medical staff they acted like I did not know what I was talking about. Could not dismiss me fast enough. Worried about infection.
Mary why didn’t I include a bandaid with my goat card…clever idea but I’m not that clever ( ; Let us know what doctor says about your wound.
Henners – I thought it was pretty clever as well as funny!
The pictures before and after pictures of your barn are so interesting. Look at the difference in the trees over the years.
I have the Wear Warm Clothes book too. I may give it a try when the weather cools down some. Still working on my Hometown USA quilt which won’t be finished by the 4th but, getting close.
WOW, what a blog today! I think I have all of your books, but maybe you could list them here someday?
I made Warm Clothes many moons ago but gave it to a non quilting friend who admired it whenever she came to my house.
Glad you ae having your wound looked at, looked pretty deep. Hubs has many issues with wounds on his feet and ankles from his ankle braces. No feeling in his lower extremities so if he has a sore, he doesn’t usually feel it. Those pesky little things can turn overnight into a major problem!
Also a question – if the person who made the pink bordered quilt could please share the pattern name?
My new favorite hero – Sophie Cunningham!!
I know I have the Wear Warm Clothes book and possibly a kit? Hmmmmmm maybe a trip to my storage unit is in order…….🥰
Sandy
Your barn looks so good now. It must have taken a long time to do all the work on it and money, but it was definitely worth it. Those goats must be so happy living there.
Calling Dr.Keeper, calling Dr. Keeper Mary needs wound care! If only it were that easy 🤭! Love the warm clothes pattern!
I saw a few short clips of the Caitlin abuse and Sophie videos on YouTube. How has this gotten so violent? They should be banned and jailed! 🤬
I enjoyed the photos of “Wear Warm Clothes” this morning – I remember when the book came out (I was working in a quilt store at the time). Such fun!
It’s hot here this week – heat advisories are up and only pop-up showers are predicted later in the week. My plants will need extra water now and the cat has been scouting out all the shady places – when he is outside and not enjoying the AC inside.
Please take care of that leg!!! Hope it heals quickly and completely!
Wear Warm Clothes is one of my favorites still. I think I may have all of your books and will never get rid of them. The stories in them are as much fun as the patterns! I still have a few pieces of your fabrics as well. I had quite a bit of this line and think it may be gone now. But I also have some of the other line with the barns and the chickens. Love it all and wish I could get more.
Ruth – thank you for that vote of confidence!
Hi Mary, we need warm clothes in New Zealand today! Very chilly, oil heater on, 3 layers of sweaters, fluffy slippers, 2 quilts on my knees as l hand stitch a dresden plate block for a cushion before making the quilt! At least it wasn’t raining! Happy birthday 🎂 for the 3rd Mary! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – as I always say, I like hearing about your opposite weather on the other side of the world! Stay warm.
You and Connie look like teenagers! Love the pictures of all the different Wear Warm Clothes quilts. You really put a lot of work into your barn. The red barn is just beautiful.
Love your blog!
As I was going through my Christmas stash today I found a 1/4 yard of green material from Wear Warm Clothes. I inherited most of my stash from my mom and grandma. I will have to check those salvages closer.
I was so inspired by the pictures I just ordered the book used on Amazon. They have a “new” one listed for $49.00. However, the used ones are way more reasonable priced. Be sure to check that it says the pattern pieces are attached. Made that mistake once.
It will be a great winter quilt! Love the pics of the goats.
Brenda – you found a book!!! Good idea to warn people about those large pattern pieces / oh, I’m just tickled you could find one. I wish I had 200 to sell!!!
Mary you have done amazing things at your farm and made amazing patterns with Connie.
Happy 4 th and happy birthday.
Our country is so blest to have you in it.
🥰🥰🥰🥰
I started Wear Warm Clothes when the book came out. Still hope to finish it one day. HA!
Loved seeing all the different versions. Inspiration for me!
I too got a Thank you today. She sounds very upbeat, no wonder they are beating this terrible thing. I love the goats, my great granddaughter told me they are getting a goat. They live on the edge of town, they have chickens, did have ducks, but they disappeared, who knows? They could fly, so they may have gone in search of deeper water. Good luck at the dr, maybe he will send you to the wound clinic to get that thing healed up.
Dee – did you send something to the Lovelaces? I sure hope she isn’t sending thank you notes for each card!!! Too much work and expense for her.
No, Rhonda is not sending a thank you to all the card senders. She told me what you sent and also that someone else sent her some stamps. She was just overwhelmed to get that many cards from complete strangers. She has her third “harsh” treatment today. She finally was well enough to go to church last Sunday, but tried not to get hugs etc. She hadn’t been to church for 10 weeks as she was so sick all the time. She is dreading today, knowing what she might be facing from the treatment.
Thank you to everyone that sent them a card. It was mind boggling to her to get over 25 cards a day in the mail for three days. I told her I wanted to see them as well.
Rhonda’s mom
Jeanine – someone called this a card ministry and it is! I hope it’s not as bad as she’s expecting. I know they had a community reception for them which was so nice!!
