Yup, it’s cold everywhere! 1-18-25

I wonder if church has ever been cancelled because of frigid temps. I doubt it – I’ll dress warm.

So does anybody watch TikToc? Is it a big deal that it’s outlawed? I have no idea.

Here’s your first question:

The Hankster turned one! Look at those eyes surveying the treats.

Keeper loved the RediWhip, too. Hazel could not be bothered with eating but Michele brought her a ball and frankly I’m sick of playing ball tonight.

Here’s today’s binding finish – very small – but done.

A reader asked about my supply of backgrounds and low volume fabrics. Here’s one shelf:

And a stack I’m using in the house –

They’re wearing TURTLENECKS!!!

From Judith’s greenhouse –

Refreshing to see those blooms.

Another great quilt –

Me, you ask? I’m working on those red and white strip border sections shown here.

Here’s a laugh for you – I hope the person who said this isn’t reading this blog – well, no, I guess I hope they are.

“You mean if I win a $25 gift certificate, I’ll have to come back here to spend it?”

I found some notes of things customers said over the years. Things that were ridiculous.

Here’s another one. Today I got a request for a donation from Country Threads to give away at a quilt show in California. Somehow I don’t think that guild is very interested in Country Threads if they don’t know we closed over 10 years ago. Duh.

I’ll be going to church in my warmest coat!

Don’t forget to answer the question in the comment section. This will be fun! My favorite dessert would be a tie between Heath Bar cake and pecan pie.

What fun reading thru the favorite desserts! As I am reading – I’m thinking ‘that’s my favorite. No – that’s my favorite. No wait – that’s my favorite… So then I thought I will think about what dessert I DON’T like – I couldn’t think of any dessert that I don’t like!

We are going to Gulf Shore in a few weeks – unless it keeps snowing there! I was watching the weather and some live cam videos – wow. This morning in Kasson MN it was 16 degrees and in Gulf Shore it was 13 degrees and they have way more snow than we do lol.

Our church has canceled Mass when there is ice on the streets. They’re afraid the elderly who go to daily Mass will try to get to church and be hurt. I think on Sunday they have never canceled.
My favorite dessert would be brownies with ice cream if I had to choose just one. I love anything chocolate and have chocolate pieces in my sewing room. I also love pecan pie, coconut cream pie, carrot cake from a place in Whitesboro Texas, a churro/sopapilla dessert at El Fenix, and so many more. I can no longer eat my favorite BlueBell ice cream as I’m lactose intolerant after menopause so miss my daily bowl of yummy.
It’s cold and today I get to bring the cats to the vet. After a vet visit I have to keep the cats apart for a while as they will hiss and fight since their brother smells like the vet. We missed last year with all of the Iowa house goings on so I don’t want to miss another year especially since I plan to bring them to Iowa this spring and summer.

Susan – this is Magnus and Klaus, right? Wonder how they’ll like Iowa. Do they go outside? Hope they don’t decide to find their way back to TX.

      1. Susan K in Texas

Yes Magnus and Klaus. I wonder how they will do on the long drive. My friend drove from Texas to Maryland when she moved. She said her cat settled down and slept for the two day drive.
They do go outside here in Texas. I always go out with them and they’re only allowed short times outside. Klaus goes over the fence and will sometimes wander off which always worries me. They’re trained to come to my whistle but they are cats so he ignores me. Magnus stays in the fenced backyard and comes to my whistle.
I may have a catio built for them in Iowa as there are no fences and I’m worried about them wandering off.

Chocolate Sheet Cake. Its a wonderful cake with chocolate icing & pecans on top. I got the recipe from my MIL when I first got married. I’ve been making it since l973. Its always a winner. They now have one called Texas Blond Sheet Cake. It’s a close second but my favorite is still the chocolate one.
I’m heading to a quilting retreat with friends on Thursday. It’s rather cold here in North Texas. It will be a wonderful time to stay inside with friends & sew.

  4. Lindah in northern CA

Interesting question. And the responses! I was salivating before I was half way thru reading them.
I like most any dessert. And I enjoy making desserts. But if I can only choose one, I would have to pick ice cream because it is so versatile and can easily stand alone. And I like it so much. Too much. 8)
    Great collection of photos today.

  5. Kim from Wi

My favorite dessert would be rice pudding, for me it’s the bomb. We spent a few days helping our son clean his new construction home and then on Sunday we started to move his stuff from our home to his. (Just across the street). We hope to finish moving tomorrow but the weather has been brutal and with the windchill we all have chapped hands at this point. I made a huge pot of chili to feed us all for the weekend and it was a hit. I loved the cute chicken picture, so sweet. Happy Birthday to Hazel and Hank, a couple of handsome dudes.

  6. Paula Nordt

Do chocolate covered nuts count as a dessert? Doesn’t really matter which nut – peanut, pecan, almond…. Add caramel for bonus points. I live southwest of Houston, Texas. It is 32* at 10pm Sunday.. We are forecast to have snow and ice Tuesday and Wednesday for the first time in maybe five years or more. So school has already been cancelled for those days, because we don’t know how to drive on ice and snow! LOL!
I, also, love your little quilt. So bright and cheerful!

  7. Cyndy Frey

Jamaican Mystery Cake: White cake with a coffee syrup (like a poke cake), a custard filling with rum flavoring, and whipped cream frosting. It’s the best!

  8. Jan Smith

For favorite dessert I am not going to be so specific – I’m going with cake!
Love the funny comments from your customers. Keep ‘em coming. I’ve read some good ones that came from booksellers, and libraries.
Stay warm! I have to walk my dog Sparky, and normally enjoy it, but we just make a quick round the block when it’s so bitter cold.
    Happy Birthday to handsome Hank!

  9. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

    Mary,
My favorite dessert would be Texas Sheet cake. My husband says carrot cake. Fun question!
Spent the day in Fort Lauderdale, FL. 86* and mostly sunny. We wore a lot of sunscreen as our skin is certainly not used to that! We board the cruise ship tomorrow. Going to several stops in the south Caribbean. Looking forward to the warmth. Take care everyone. 🌻

  10. MJ

My favorite desserts? That’s easy: old-fashioned red velvet cake with butter icing (not the cream cheese stuff). I have that for my birthday every year. My Mom made it for me when I was around 9 and every year since then. My sister makes her recipe for me now. My other favorite is an almond croissant. They help celebrate the good days and provide comfort for bad days.

Love the mini quilt that you just finished. Stay warm! It’s cold here in Texas.

  11. Debra Reber

I think if I could only have one dessert, I would get sick of it pretty quickly! So I guess I’ll go with the Cookies category, since there are lots of different kinds! I love the little quilt that you just finished binding! Most of our dogs have been rescues, so we usually don’t know their birthdays, so we usually celebrate their “gotcha day” instead of a birthday!

  12. Deb / CA

It would be a tie between bread pudding and chocolate cake. I enjoyed the pic of the chickens in turtleneck sweaters! We’ve had 2 nights where we hosted an overnight stay for our grandpup #1 (6# blind chihuahua, our daughters dog) and the next night we had grandpup #2 (30# pharoah hound/terrier, our sons dog). I’ll be glad for a quiet night without an extra dog tonight, as much as I love the 2 grandpups…
    Stay warm! Deb / CA

  13. Jill Klop

You hit a good topic Mary…it took me forever to get to the bottom of the comments!! I even asked for a recipe along the way! I am a cake girl! Right now I like a butter pecan cake with buttercream icing. I also make something called Krispie Scotcheroos. We love those! I live in south central Texas. It was 27 degrees when we woke up but it felt like 7. That’s it…just 7 degrees! I dressed in layers for church!

  14. Cynthia Arneson

Love the chickens in their turtle neck sweaters! It’s so difficult to choose just one favorite dessert! I love custard pie that my grandpa used to make. I make every once in awhile, but his tasted the best!

  15. judith

Only one—-Favorite dessert—-well I would say a good homemade peach pie with vanilla ice cream. But right now I only have a pan of brownie just out of the oven so that will have to do.
    Stay safe a warm. judy.

  16. Sandy

I love the finished small quilt. It is always a good feeling to have another finish.
I am amazed and envious of your low volume prints. I never veer that direction so have not many on hand . I have to concentrate when shopping to make myself choose them for any projects.
As to desserts, I make Wacky Cake with dark chocolate cocoa powder so that dark chocolatey cake with any topping, …… frosting, whipped cream, or ice cream is top of the list. Yum. Second would be pumpkin raisin bars with cream cheese frosting. Why stop with two? Third would be mile high layered carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. With age and blood sugar issues these are usually just daydreams and wishes!

  17. Jeanie S, Central IL

Favorite dessert: homemade chocolate chip (semisweet) cookies w/walnuts. Not that I am particular. 😂
The birthday party looked like fun in spite of the cold temps. RediWhip has always been a fave at our house for both pets and humans.
Mary, I love the little quilt you just finished binding; it is so bright and cheery!
That star quilt you are making is wonderful. I was surprised it has more stars in the border.😳 You work so quickly; it would take me forever to make it.
    Take Care/Stay Warm, 🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanie – this doesn’t feel like quickly to me but I can’t stop now. To give up because I’m sick of it would be a travesty! Haha!!!

  18. Gloria in NC

I absolutely love desserts. I would rather eat desserts than a meal but of course, I don’t do that if I want to be healthy or not fat!!!
My first thought was Pecan pie but then I thought of ice cream and then I thought of chocolate. I love ice cream and could eat it every day.

  19. Charlotte

Favorite dessert: anything my mother made. To narrow it down: a fruit pie with vanilla ice cream.. My mouth is watering as I think about it!

  20. Dee in Ohio

My mom could make pies like no other from coconut cream to fruit pies and they were filled to the brim. I would say my favorite is a 3 berry pie

  21. Connie in NW Ohio

I just love the chickens and their sweaters! How wonderful to have a greenhouse with flowers blooming.
My very favorite dessert is Tiramisu.

  22. Christine in AZ

I love the chicken turtlenecks! As for dessert, I can’t decide between ice cream and milk chocolate chip cookies. I love them both.
I dug out a couple of oooolllld flimsies and this year will be the year I finally finish them.
Happy birthday to Hank and Hazel – my boy Moo turns 11 on Tuesday.

  23. Kelli in NE Ohio

Love Hank’s birthday picture – it looks like he’s smiling at the Reddi Whip and treats 😁 my dog goes absolutely crazy when I pull the Reddi Whip can out of that fridge

One dessert I’d eat forever?? Chocolate cobbler! Old fashioned recipe but oh so yummy!😋

It’s bitterly cold here with wind chills way below zero. Stay warm everyone!

  24. Jeanine from SE iowa

If I had to eat it every day I would say ice cream, but what I do eat almost every day is a pice of dark chocolate candy, and that satisfies my sweet tooth. I especially like the dark chocolate truffles.
We had church this morning, but our attendance was down. It was -5* with wind, so very cold.

  25. Doris in Alabama

Mary, My favorite dessert would be bread pudding with caramel sauce on top! Yummy! Love your blog and read it with my coffee every morning! Thanks for all you share with us!!

      1. Doris in Alabama

Yes ma’am! The temperature is not going to get above freezing this week until maybe Wednesday! It is really cold for us!!

  26. Roberta Etherington

    Roberta in MN

Schaum Torte with fresh strawberries, you might also know it as forgotten cake.

We had a good church turnout- it was the budget mtg!!

  27. Sharon G NE IN

Question answer: ice cream with pecan pie!!! LOL Loved the chicken turtlenecks!! Fun post today. I don’t do Tik Tok so I don’t know anything about it. I don’t think I’m missing anything though.

It’s getting colder as the day goes on and I hope everyone has a warm place to be.

  28. Marlene Clausen

Favorite dessert is a tie between my aunt’s (long deceased) Waldorf Astoria Red Cake she always made for my birthday and my cousin’s (other side of the family) German Chocolate Cake she made for everyone’s birthday. Why her’s was so much better than any other I’ve had, I will never know. Will never again have either one; but, that’s OK. They are part of precious childhood memories making those two desserts even more special.

  29. Vicki in Iowa City

Favorite dessert: creme brulee followed by rhubarb custard pie and cheesecake. I like the plain creme brulee – no berries or flavoring added. I once had blueberry lemon creme brulee and did not like near as well as plain creme brulee. I make the rhubarb custard pie multiple times each spring/summer. I don’t tackle making the creme brulee, though someone said there is an instapot recipe for it that is quite easy.

  30. Rita in Iowa

Ok so my most favorite dessert is German Chocolate Cake with homemade pecan frosting. Then it would be berry or apple crisp, heated with a scoop of ice cream. Then maybe carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. It’s so much fun when we have family gatherings as we have plenty of desserts.
Love the treats made for Keepers and Hanks birthday.
Mary your small quilt is so cute. Thanks for those sharing the makings of quilts. It’s like attending a quilt show every day. You never know what you’re going to see.
The greenhouse pictures have me wishing for spring. I guess we have to get through the cold weather before it’s spring time. I do have the Christmas cactus blooming a little and the African violets that I repotted this fall. Have a great day and for most of us stay warm.

  31. Beryl BC

The four patch quilt is so pretty; it sparkles.
I put ice cream at the top of my list. The local ice cream shop’s current flavor of the month is The King, a banana flavored ice cream with peanut butter and chocolate all through it. That followed by ginger or chocolate chip cookies.

  32. Dee from Shell Rock

I loved the birthday party. Only had one dog whose birthday I knew, but she was old and got whatever she wanted to eat, so we didn’t party. She was a “can you keep her while we find a new place” dog, who stayed with Grandma. Tiramisu is my very favorite dessert, I seldom get it, and my favorite one is one shared with the friend who introduced me to it. And I think the chickens are lovely, and that we are all ready for spring always.

  33. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Favorite dessert is homemade pie. Love pumpkin pie with ice cream and homemade apple pie.
Football was great yesterday. Couldn’t believe the Lions Commanders game. But I had to stay up til the end!
Chiefs fan here, great game. Love it that Kelce played well! Mahomes is always great!
I’m looking forward to the Bills game, too!

    1. Kris in WI

I agree! Homemade pie as a type of dessert because there is such a variety. Favorites include Apple Pie with a nice slice of sharp cheddar cheese and Pumpkin Pie with real whipped cream (whipped in a bowl).
I almost forgot Lemon Meringue and …

2* here in SCWI, our high for the day, wind chill of -17*. Lunch is what my husband calls Ham Soup with barley and rutabagas along with the regular veggies, plus ham pieces and stock, of course.
Stay warm everyone. Kris in WI

  34. Li

Those roosters in turtlenecks are the best chuckle. Homemade hot fudge on any kind of ice cream. If I could eat pecan pie that would be it, or german chocolate cake, or lemon meringue pie. This question is making me really hungry.

  35. Sharon F

One kind of dessert? Ice cream! No wait, cookies, no ice cream it is. But don’t make me pick just one flavor.

The chicken warmers are so cute and funny. The small quilt you bound is beautiful, such a pretty mix of colors.

I’m heading out to the Road to California quilt show next week. Looking forward to seeing the beautiful quilts and all the great vendors.

  36. Pat Smith

I would have to say ice cream in almost any flavor is my favorite. I can hardly get through any day without some. Loved seeing the happy celebrating birthday dogs. Hazel who just never tires, must be the most driven dog I’ve ever seen. Yes, it’s going down in temperature here in Florida too, and we will be really cold.

  37. Jan in AZ

Agreed – ONE choice?! Homemade cookies fresh from the oven.
All the comments about pies reminded me of my Mom’s knack for crust and pies, as my Dad loved pies. But, as a youth I loved her left over bits of the cut- off crust she’d covered with cinnamon sugar and baked.
    Jan

    1. Mary Lou

OHHH Nothing better than hot from the oven chocolate chip walnut cookies so soft and
      yummie… can’t eat just one…

    2. Susan from AL

My grandma did that too with the pie crust — what a treat that was! My sisters and I argued over who got the biggest piece. Shameful behavior LOL but treats were rare!

    3. Jan Smith

My mom did that, too, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone else mention it. Sometimes it would be butter and brown sugar, which would crystallize and be crunchy. Yum!

  38. Lisa

Only one dessert, too difficult. Iced molasses and iced sugar cookies, blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream, white cake with homemade buttercream frosting, pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting. I love to bake!

I did see Caitlin at the game. I had read that Caitlin was on stage with Taylor when she did her Indianapolis concerts. Maybe they got acquainted then.

Love the question game! Stay warm!

  39. Kathy in Illinois

So hard to pick just one. I guess any candy made with dark chocolate. My favorite breakfast is lemon Meringue pie:)

  40. Chris in Texas

It’s ice cream right now, but my favorite changes from time to time. BTW, my BIL said his church in Central Iowa was canceled today because of the cold.

  41. Nancy from W. PA

The only time I ever flew first class, they served cheesecake with the meal and I don’t like cheesecake!!!
So I didn’t eat it and the stewardess asked me if I would like something else and I said Sure, not knowing I had an option. She came back with a plateful of chocolate chip cookies and I was in heaven because that it my absolute favorite. She won stewardess of the year in my book. They may be considered a snack, but I’d take them over anything.

    1. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

I would want chocolate cake – no frosting. It is -18 here in St Croix Falls, WI with a -35 wind chill. Very cold. Dogs do not like it!😂😂. Stay warm and dress warm and drive careful to church.

  42. Jane Phillips

If I am going to choose only one desert it would be carrot cake with vanilla ice cream on the side.
Now I want to go make some.

  43. Barbara (in MO)

10 degrees here this morning. Brrrrr
    Love the dog birthday party!
My favorite dessert would have to be ice cream because there are so many different flavors 😉

  44. Fran Dixon

Chickens in turtleneck sweaters! Love it!

-4 this morning here in SW Iowa! But that’s nothing! Ha I lived in Alaska 35 yrs and went to work in -40. Yes our vehicles were plugged in to keep the fluids in the engine . well just that–fluid! Warmest boots and coats! Living there in winter could be a challenge and you stay prepared.

Enjoy seeing the dogs and what they are up to. And of course, the quilts are eye candy with coffee every morning. Thank you.

  45. KathyG from Oak Creek, WI

    Good Morning Mary,

I just love your daily weather reports – haha! By the way, it’s 5 degrees here (near Milwaukee).

My favorite dessert, in fact the only one I ever order when we go out is creme brulee. There is nothing better.

I never had a tik tok logon id. I will be happy when my granddaughters have to look up from their phones because of no more tik tok!

  46. Sheryl Harrison

Happy birthday, Hank! You are so beautiful!

The chickens in the sweaters are so cute!

I thought I could answer the dessert question but it’s kind’ a like asking who is your favorite child. My 1st thought was anything cheesecake. Then I thought of the Cosco cakes with the wonderful filling. And pastry! and the Java ice cream shakes from the fast-food places. I love dessert and my favorite is what is available. I’d probably pick cake if I could only have one kind of dessert because there are lots of varieties of cake.

  47. Angie from Baltimore

As a dessert I have to say Lemon Meringue pie with Mike high meringue. My Mom would make one and if there was leftovers the next morning the meringue would be gone as my sister would eat it but “saved you the pie”. Really irritating .
In Baltimore we are getting ready for the Playoffs but next week we are going to have single digits temps at night and teens during the day. REALLY cold for us. They are begging people to bring in their animals and checking on neighbors

  48. Teresa in Indiana

Hi Mary- my dessert choice would have to be Devils Food cake with white icing. My favorite since a child! I love the quilts and chickens today. And Happy birthday to Hazel & Hank. So cute seeing those eyes! I’ve been working on a “coat of many colors” for a great neices birthday. I’ll send pics later. They went to Dollywood this past fall and she loved the story. Stay safe and warm everybody.

  49. Viv in Idaho

    Good morning!
It is hard to pick one dessert.. I look forward to strawberry shortcake when the fresh berries are on. I think I will go along with Shirley and call cookies a snack 😂.

    Viv

  50. Diana in Des Moines

Happy Birthday to Hank and Hazel!
My dad worked at Meadow Gold while I was growing up so definitely ice cream tops my list. Vanilla with Hersheys chocolate syrup.
We have church this morning, but a no go for us. We had covid over New Years, and the cough lingers.
Still on my cleaning binge so breaking down boxes today, sorting fabric for donations and emptying walls and patching nail holes before the painter comes next week.
    Stay warm, Mary.

  51. Tanya T in Houston

Let me wipe the drool off my face from looking at those light fabrics first! Then, I would have to agree with GOOD plain vanilla ice cream. Love that chicken photo!

  52. Holly Vogltance

How can you choose only one dessert for FOREVER!! Oh the agony! Haha I supposed I would go with ice cream as long as I can have a variety of toppings to change it up.

For people clicking on the ads in the blog. Todays’ is for a blissy pillowcase. I was gifted one and they are wonderful. In case anyone is interested.

  53. Barbara in New York (currently in Columbia)

My favorite dessert is anything with chocolate in it with chocolate chip cookies at the top of the list. This has been a great weekend for football and sewing. Working on a wall quilt for my daughter Becky. A few years ago she gave me a stack of assorted wool fabrics she brought back from Scotland as a Birthday gift. I started a top for myself with the beautiful fabric and somehow she talked me into making it for her house in Hendersonville, NC ! It will rest on the face of her 2 storied stone fireplace. So excited about the Bills game later today. The Bills Mafia is alive and ready to support our team here in Columbia, SC. Glad I can watch it on TV because it’s gonna be COLD up there but that never stopped a true Bill’s fan to get out there and support them.

    1. Hank's Mom

      Barbara,
I’m with you. Not sure I’ve ever NOT liked a dessert but my favorite list would have to include chocolate-the darker the better-and agree that chocolate chip cookies are at the top. Can I add some pecans to that cookie?? :

  54. Ginger S in New Hampshire

What a great post today Mary! I loved seeing the dog’s celebrating birthdays. My daughter-in-law always makes something special for our granddog on her birthday and of course she wears a party hat. I love it. The;Chickens in turtlenecks was so cute. And your quilts!!!!!!! Beautiful. I sent for the pattern for the red, white and blue quilt and waiting anxiously for it to arrive. i hope I have enough variety of fabrics. You would think I would never have to buy more fabric, but of course I do!
Only one desert?????? That would be very difficult as I love so many desserts. I think it would be chocolate chip cookies (we call them Toll House Cookies) with nuts . They don’t last long when I make them.

  55. Debra J Oscarson

Homemade vanilla ice cream. Big bowl, no toppings. I know, I’m fairly boring. Don’t make it very often, but it brings back memories of being a little girl and helping my Dad crank the machine.
Thanks for this blog and the memories it draws up.

  56. Donna Albright

Three degrees below at 6:30 this morning! Pepper, the dog, went out but didn’t stay long, that’s for sure.
Nothing much going on here today. I think I’ll go to my sewing room and put together the sashing strips for my Christmas tree quilt. Or maybe I’ll cut the parts needed for Oopsie Daisy quilt. We’ll see when I get there.
If I could only eat one dessert for the rest of my life, I think it would be my mom’s apple crisp…..but it needs to be freshly made because that’s when it’s best I think. It’s quick and easy and my whole family loves it too.
Keep yourself warm today and the next couple of days. I’ve been to the grocery store for not very much so I only have to go out to feed and water the birds. They are very happy to have a heated bird bath.

  57. Carolyn Boutilier

Raspberry pie with ice cream or whip cream. Happy Birthday Hank.We are expecting snow and then a deep freeze. Happy Sunday. Carolyn b Shenandoah valley Va.

  58. Joy in NW Iowa

I should have answered the dessert question before I end all the comments! My mom made a raisin cream pie with meringue that was awesome! It was not made with sour cream or tons of cinnamon. It was sweet! And the memory makes it really sweet.

Yes, it is cold but it has been colder! Put a warm scarf around your neck so you can cover your mouth outside! Helps you breathe when you’re cold. We are a bunch of whining chickens these days. Now days we can start the car from church….think about people in the horse and buggy days. They didn’t miss
church . They probably were so excited to get out of the house!

Love all the pictures! How do you take such lovely photos? The ‘funny’ comments’ are hilarious but have actually been said! Chickens with turtle necks. Cute!
Better get my warm clothes on!

  59. Karen Cyr

Favorite dessert? Has to be something chocolate and I think the best would be chocolate mousse. So rich and not hampered from eating it too fast like chocolate ice cream. Love the dogs different reaction to birthday “treats”. And chickens are clearly having a moment. Sharp looking in turtlenecks. I’ve seen such cute patterns for knitted or crocheted chickens, I’m going to try again to learn to crochet. Cold here in MD as well. My sewing space is in the basement and it’s been too cold to spend much time there. Go Commanders!

    Karen C in MD

  60. Paula in Kansas

Fave dessert is pecan pie but I also love ice cream! It’s so versatile and I can make floats, milkshakes, and just a nice bowl of it!

Very cold here in south-central Kansas this morning at 7 degrees with a windchill below zero. Ice on the roof is cracking this morning which is unnerving!

  61. Cindy from Minnesota

Good morning, Mary! It’s a two-quilt and comforter cold morning here in SW Minnesota this morning. It was -12* a while ago. I loved the photos today and I would like to get the dimensions on the blocks on the very cool scrappy little quilt with the blue binding. This would be fun to make! I have thought a while about the dessert question and I think a two-crust blueberry pie would be my favorite dessert with a side of ice cream, of course! I am reading ‘The Women’ and they did a survey on the most read book’s at the Plum Creek Library System, and this was the most read book in 2024. I hope to finish this today. I am enjoying the photos of the chickens with the leashes, but truly, the turtlenecks are the best! I plan to stay warm today, thank goodness for cuddle duds!

  62. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

My favorite dessert… I’m going full on group and claiming COOKIES! The only kind I don’t like are snickerdoodles, so boring, I can’t taste the point of them. I’m sure someone will disagree so if there’s a good recipe worth the bother, I’ll keep an open mind and you can share it!
My favorite cookie is my mother’s cut out frosted sugar cookies, I could eat them all day, with a pot of tea and a good book. My sister has taken over the sugar cookie baking and they are just as good.
I love the chickens in turtlenecks! Real, or AI, who knows anymore, but they are fun! And valuable these days at 50 cents (plus) per egg! Good girls to have around.
We are going to have negative number temps this week in Western New York, but it’ll be balmy today (teens!) for THE BIG GAME! Go, BILLS!

    1. Barbara in New York (currently in Columbia)

Hi Carol, The Bills Mafia is alive and cheering down here in Columbia, SC. Of course, the game will come down to the final few minutes as usual !! I don’t envy the fans sitting in the stands but the weather NEVER stopped our enthusiasm for our beloved team. GO BILLS !!!!!!!

  63. Linda from central Iowa

I was raised in far western ranch area of NORTH Dakota in the 1950’s – often got down to -20’s or colder not factoring in the wind chill. Had headbolt heaters in the garages. Very small town of 800 people and it didn’t take very long at all to do the any shopping and we had all the essentials – grocery, hardware, drug, department stores – so people would just leave their cars idling while shopping. Never once was church canceled – the town people could always get there and my mom was the pianist.
A sweet dessert is a rare thing in our house but caramel swirl frozen yogurt would be my choic as I wouldn’t have to fix it!!!. But we do have a lot of sliced apples with a thin slice of a hard cheese – that I could eat every day and not get tired of it.
Feel sorry for the animals that have to be out in this weather – but my goodness, are our little squirrels chuncky this year!!! They don’t seem to be suffereing.

    1. Kathy in NY

Yes sireeee Sandra! Bills sweatshirt is ready to slap on after church!!!! Many will be donning bills attire at our church today and I’m sure our young pastor will be cracking a sweet smile looking out when she begins with her welcome. We once interviewed for a new pastor by weekly with different ones and this wonderful lady said “ please don’t even consider me for a permanent position because I have seasons Bills tickets and would rather be tailgating on Sunday morning home games. Too bad as she was a good speaker but loved her honesty.

  64. another Shirley in Illinois

My favorite dessert. Like many of the comments, that’s a hard one. I love creme brulee’ and cheesecake a close second. I stayed in my house for 12 days because of the snow, sleet, ice and snow again on the long lane to my house. (sigh). Spent the whole time working on a quilt. Bonnie Hunter’s mystery. (not colors that I would pick but that’s why I do her mysteries, the colors are the challenge!) (but I’m loving it). I enjoy all your pics in your blog. Fun!!

  65. Ann S.

I bake pumpkins every fall and freeze the puree. Pumpkin pie is my favorite dessert and l make it year round!! Mmmmmmm!! I recently found a pumpkin pudding recipe that tastes just like a pumpkin pie. It is yummy too.

  66. Karen near Daytona FLarea

Hmmmm…just one dessert is very difficult. My very favorite would be spumoni ice cream but it is very hard to find in stores or ice cream shoppes here in the south. Then there is flan with caramel sauce. Oh, and then there is coffee chocolate cake with homemade chocolate frosting. LOL. As I said, “very difficult”
Our temp this morning is 69* but it is going up to around 74* later in day. Rain most of the week and temps will drop into 40’s. We live just below where snow is supposed to be in FL.
Enjoyed the pictures in today’s blog. The chickens were cute and looked cozy.
Have a great day everyone and stay warm if it applies to your area

    1. Kathy in western NY

I’m with you Karen- flan would be my one forever dessert. I get it at Mexican restaurants here. So creamy and yummy. If it wasn’t so cold, I would go out to eat at one of the many Mexican restaurants around here after church to have flan but maybe start with a margarita with salted rim first.

  67. Carmen M.

Strawberry Ice Cream or anything Strawberry!
The chickens in turtlenecks are adorable.
Love your Star quilt! You sure have a lot of small neutral prints which I also have a lot of, of course not as much as you do!!! 😊

  68. Deb from Iowa

Favorite dessert would be homemade vanilla ice cream, covered in chocolate syrup. Cranking the ice cream maker as a kid was such fun. Love the chickens in their sweaters. Stay warm everybody.

  69. Shirley Andersen Smith

Hmmmm, desserts. Ginger molasses cookies, cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, brownies, ice cream, key lime pie and strawberry rhubarb pie( my grandmas recipe).
Nope, I cannot just name one.
Cold here, sunny days. Tons of snow on mountains but barren down here in the high desert, but not complaining.
Working on a Sarah Fielke applique quilt called Growing Wild…..will take forever but am enjoying it. I will send photos as soon as I get a few things on it. Prep is killing me.
    Shirley from central Oregon

  70. Lynette in Orlando

The cold is coming to Florida…. ugh…… the rains have started and the cold front is behind them. Possible snow in north Florida!!!

Favorite dessert? That’s a tough one, but if I could only eat 1 I would have to say ice cream. Start with chocolate……

For a “blog about nothing” Mary, I have say I really look forward to reading it every morning. Helps start my day with a smile. Love the pups, love seeing peoples creativity (and yours Mary). Those chickens in the sweaters! LOVE it!

I hope everyone stays warm! A good day to spend sewing…….. but then that is everyday isn’t it???? LOL

  71. Susan in VA

I can’t possibly imagine just one dessert for the rest of my life! I love sweets way too much! As I was reading through the comments I’d think — oh, yes, cheesecake, then someone mentioned carrot cake, then there was pecan pie, and chocolate chip cookies, and lemon meringue pie…..
    Sorry, can’t do it!!!

  72. MAUREEN Mullarkey

I love pie and my favorite is lemon meringue but my mom made the best crust and I have not had a good piece of pie in a long time.

  73. Judy in Oregon

Picking just one dessert would be difficult. It would be either New York style cheesecake with raspberry topping or Chocolate peppermint trifle. The chiefs game was great!

  74. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

The chickens wearing turtlenecks is so cute! I always think good luck keeping those on!

My favorite desert is cherry pie but the crust must be good and there must be an abundance of cherries, which there never is. Close second is carrot cake with cream cheese icing but just a small slice, it is usually so rich I don’t finish it. I’m really not a fan of sweets and unless everyone else is indulging I will pass it up.

For the first time ever I have heat on in the barn for the little donkeys, Albert and Norman. Lows for the next three days will be -0 so I built them a tented area in their stall to keep the draft down and have two heat lamps in their tent. It won’t be warm but hopefully keep the severe cold away. They used to stay close to Bear for his body heat, I think they still miss him.

  75. Beth Laverty in NEPA

I am pretty sure I should say Chocolate Ice Cream is my favorite dessert!! When ever we go out to eat and dessert is offered it is definitely what I choose…. even on the coldest day.
Where we are in Pennsylvania it is still not horribly cold but that is set to change as the week progresses… going down to near zero for several nights in a row. And a bit of a snowstorm today.
I enjoyed seeing Caitlin in the stands with Taylor Swift while watching yesterday’s KC Chiefs game.

  76. Shirleyf

It is so hard to choose just one dessert. I love pie, all kinds, but especially cherry or apple. I love strawberry rhubarb, too. I’ll just say pie in general. Then there’s cookies and whoopie pies. I’ll call them snacks instead of desserts.

  77. Carla

Ladies, I have a request. My DIL asked me if I could recommend an embroidery machine. She recently started quilting and does fabulous work. But my newest machine is from the 80s and I have No Idea what to tell her! I figured with the wealth of knowledge represented in these comments one of you all may know of a good machine/ brand. I really want to encourage her. Thank you all for any advice you may have!

    1. Carla

I’m replying to myself because I forgot to answer the question lol…. favorite dessert? Pumpkin pie. Maybe. I do look forward to it every fall and often make it off season just because I like it! We will be single digits with wind off the lake for a few days. Brrrr! But I love a good fire in the stove so we will be warm. I wish everyone could be warm and safe. Take care.

    2. Lynette in Orlando

I have a Bernina and I love it. I did get the stand alone embroidery machine – it’s the 500 as then I can sew and embroider at the same time. When I made my purchase I had a shop that was great about classes and helping you, but thanks to Covid, sadly that shop is now closed. I would purchase one that you had access to good help and instruction as well as good service. We all have our favorite machines, but I think service is most important. All the best to her!!

      1. Carla

Thanks Lynette, I didn’t even think of her having a choice between stand alone and, would it be dual use? Good advice about buying from a shop for the support. She’s probably looking at Amazon! I’m direct her to the local shop. Thanks again!

        1. Beryl BC

I got a Bernina when looking for an embroidery machine. Mine is embroidery to attach to the sewing machine. I wouldnt have space for two machines at a time. I had a difficult time deciding between a high end Brother and the Bernina. I mostly made up my mind based on the local shop.

  78. Sharon Ray

My favorite dessert? Lemon Meringue pie (made with milk). It’s probably a good thing it’s a pain to make or I would be larger than I am already

  79. Tina H.

My favorite dessert would be a yellow cake with dark chocolate frosting. A close second would be something like a really gooey lemon bar.

The star quilt is looking great. Sometimes I feel accomplished just finishing one or two blocks!

  80. Denise

Mary, no snow where I live and my best dessert choice reflects that, fruit salad including watermelon.
Love the quilt you are making, is the pattern called America.?Also your blue table cloth looks lovely too.
Always fun to read your blog, thanks

  81. Jamie in AZ

If you asked the question 2 weeks ago I would have said crème brûlée. However, 2 weeks ago my friend brought me a cronut from a Parisienne bakery nearby. It was to die for! A donut made from light, flaky croissant dough, stuffed with custard and a drizzle of orange glaze on top. She got a strawberry croissant, a huge croissant stuffed with custard and very huge strawberries. Good thing that bakery is not quite close enough that I could go there on my own, I would end up on one of those fat people reality shows. I’m too fat already!

Glad the fur babies enjoyed their party. The roosters are too,too funny.

  82. Sandy

Hi Mary, my favourite dessert is ice-cream, boyesnberry or passionfruit, chocolate dipped at the movies, or sharing it with Bella at home(not chocolate dipped). I love the blue quilt on your table, might have to add that to the list.Lovely, sunny day, put on Bermuda shorts even! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – oh, this is killing me – Bermuda shorts!! Such fun to hear about your climate – I love it! Our wind chill this morning is 34 below zero!

  83. Candy

My dessert would have to be New York style cheesecake, with any kind of fruit topping … but I wouldn’t refuse any dessert! Looks like the dogs had a good birthday party … and they even got dessert!

  84. Martha W in WY

My favorite dessert would be my mother’s Strawberry Beauty Pie. It’s not a pie at all. There is a crust, then a whipped cream/marshmallow layer. The topping is strawberries in a strawberry glaze. It is so yummy.
I had to chuckle when I saw the chickens with sweaters. I even sent a photo of them to my daughter who raises chickens in ND. Their “high” today was -7! They had to go out and check for eggs every couple of hours so the eggs wouldn’t freeze. Ugh!

  85. Patricia

I have so much to comment on.
Anything dark chocolate would do it for me. Definitely a chocoholic.
Your chickens are amazing. I thought this was the time of year the hens stopped laying until the days get longer and perhaps warmer. The fly larvae don’t look bad but the thought that they’d turn into black flies makes my stomach turn. I think they like stink bugs too. Stink bugs are disgusting because they are pretty bad smelling.
Your productivity with quilting is amazing. I loved your rose colored quilt and you always photograph your quilts so well. Love the star red white and blue quilt. Your current one is fun!
I do have a question for you and I’m in no hurry and I know you have many other things going on in your life. I sent a check for your 30 stars for 30 years pattern in December and I don’t want to miss that pattern. Just wondering if you’ve started to send out those patterns?
Your photos of the eerie tree was just that – eerie. Last Sunday just around sunset I finished a walk and the full moon had risen in a clear dark sky and the great horned pair of owls were hooting. It was magical. I tried for pictures with my I phone but just couldn’t get a clear sharp picture of the moon as I saw it.
Happy birthday to Hank and Hazel. I just love the antics of Hazel.
Last week was our quilt retreat in Pa. Lots of fun.
We are supposed to get snow here in Md tomorrow so no one will be going anywhere and it is to get cold here too. Perhaps not as cold as you.
Thanks Mary. Always enjoy the blog!
    Pat in Md

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat – all the patterns were sent by Jan 1 so if you didn’t get it, please send me your mailing address again and I’ll resend. You’ll have to blame the postal service. Did your check clear your account?

  86. Sharon G. (from eastern Washington)

Mary – Love the blog today – a variety of colors, topics, etc. Loved the turtleneck sweaters on the chickens. Too cute! 😂 And all the quilts are beautiful.
I love this blog about nothing. 😂

Looked like the birthday party was a hit. So glad Hank and Keeper got to enjoy it together. Hazel (if she’s like every dog I’ve known and owned) will wear you out tossing a ball! Where do they get the energy?

The dessert I’d eat every day if I could is a Jello pudding recipe called Lemon Lush. It sounds like a decadent alcoholic drink but it’s a delicious dessert. Yum!

    Have a nice Sunday everyone!

  87. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

I too love dessert and don’t know if I can name just one – really good apple pie (it’s the crust that is important). My grandmas cherry pie – her secret was to dot with butter and sprinkle almond extract on the fresh cherries she had picked and pitted before putting the top crust on, no bake cheesecake. So light and tasty. My family favourite is called apple rollups. Made with a biscuit type crust with grated apples placed on top before rolling up like a cinnamon bun, then you make a syrup with butter, water, sugar and cinnamon. Heat it up pour it over the rolls before baking. It ends up like cinnamon buns with apples. It is so good. I could keep going…..now I want dessert!

  88. Cindy K

I heard the Chiefs playing today but didn’t watch much as I’m reorganizing my sewing room-what a mess!!
My favorite dessert is Chocolate Swirl gave to me by grandma many years ago. It’s layered with a crust on the bottom then a layer of cream cheese w/ cool whip-next layer is chocolate pudding and then topped with cool whip. I make it every Christmas and it doesn’t last long.

    1. Linda in Red Wing

I’ve been making this for more years than I can count – but the name of my recipe was/is “The Next Best Thing to Robert Redford”. It’s a big favorite with my family too – they shorten the name to just Robert Redford… 😉

      1. Linda in Red Wing

Oops – forgot to add my (current) favorite… chocolate lava cake – made in the air fryer! It’s so incredibly rich that you really need vanilla ice cream with it – and it’s quick and easy to make!

  89. Vicki in Seattle

Custard pie is my favorite because it brings back so many memories of my youth and my mother trying to use the eggs!!
Hope you all are staying warm!

  90. Jo in Wyoming

Happy Birthday to all the pups.
It’s real cold here…-11 in Laramie.
The Sugar Mouse Bakery makes a fantastic German Chocolate cupcake. When my son had a coffee wagon at the farmers market, he made homemade vanilla ice cream, folded in a cherry pie, dished it up then topped it off with a shot of espresso coffee. To die for. Every week it was a different pie. I think the rhubarb raspberry became a local favorite.

  91. DebMac

Just eating one dessert for the rest of your life is a horrible idea. I could maybe do a category like cake or pies or cookies or chocolate but not just one. That’s cruel. I would never eat my veggies then. Too bad I’ve already brushed my teeth or I would go have dessert just to calm my nerves.

    1. Brenda in Georgia

I totally agree with DebMac. Just one for the rest of my life?! I couldn’t choose just one from the custard, pudding types even – crème brûlée, tiramisu, egg custard, rice pudding and I also feel like going to eat ice cream to calm my nerves! This was fun. Thanks for doing this game!
Love the quilt you just finished. All the animals are great. Those roosters are beautiful. Are they yours?

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – no, the chickens are not mine – a reader sent me both pictures but I loved them.

  92. Mary

Favorite dessert has always been the kind I was eating. So, this is a very difficult question, but I do make a very good carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Really like the little piece you put binding on. It looks different in the bright light than the last time you showed us. I made one of the blocks, sew, I would remember it!

  93. Kathy L

My favorite dessert would be Haagen-Dazs pistachio ice cream,
the quilt you are working on is one on my list to make, just love it

  94. Donna Sproston

Bread pudding with praline sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.
    I love your table topper.
I grew up in KC so I am a happy camper tonight.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – great game! I’m also happy for them. Did you see Caitlin was there with Taylor?

  95. JanetB

Chocolate… any kind. My absolute favorite were the homemade chocolate caramels my mom used to make. She would cook them on cold sunny days. If it was too humid, the caramels were sticky. She put English Walnuts in them. I have her recipe. Just thinking about them might be the catalyst for inspiring me to make a batch.

  96. Carolyn in NE Illinois

Probably a pastry. They are my downfall! Love the chickens! First leashes and now sweaters 😍

  97. Patty

Oh that is a hard question. I would probably say cheesecake. But I’m thinking of the variety like at the Cheesecake Factory. I couldn’t possibly limit myself to just 1 flavor.
We have had church cancelled because of blizzards, but I don’t remember if it has ever been cancelled because of cold. It’s going to be very cold in western Iowa. I’m not looking forward to going outside.

  98. Sue Smith in OR

I guess I would have to say chocolate chip cookies. Even though I make a pretty good apple pie, I still love chocolate chip cookies more.
It’s cold here too but not as cold as your part of the country. Today got up in the low 50s but started plunging after the sun went down.

  99. Wendy P

Favorite dessert is New York style cheesecake with strawberries. Yum.

Thanks , Mary – this will be fun. Love the Rooster jokes. Can’t imagine trying to put a harness or turtleneck on a Rooster. Stay warm, it’s cold out there.

  100. Bonny

The Sioux City stations had many announcements of cancellation of services. Have you listened to local news or tried calling the church office for a recorded message? Or Facebook??

    Dessert: Butter Brickle ice cream….yum!

  101. Nan

Did you watch the Chiefs?? Caitlyn was at the game with Taylor Swift!!! Caitlyn said she had always been a Chiefs fan!

  102. Carmen

That’s a tough question, because I love dessert! I think I would pick Rhubarb Delight. It has a shortbread crust, middle is Rhubarb arb custard filling on meringue on top. So very good. Churches around here are canceled due to the cold.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – our church would never cancel so as the pianist I will never miss either due to weather
