A Second Saturday Post

Let’s hope this goes better than my first attempt. It’s been a great Saturday for college football!

Now I’m watching Iowa State vs. Kansas State being played in Ames, Iowa. Several of you have mentioned our upcoming weather of heavy snow and blizzard conditions. We are the lucky ones this time – it’s all going south of us. Des Moines is predicting 13″ of snow there tomorrow but we are 2 hours north.

Remember when I showed you these pictures of my leader/ender project last month?

picture or red and light squares sewn together – it still won’t post!

While I’ve been watching football today I’ve been working on Mystery Clue#1 from Bonnie Hunter and the pieces I was using for my leader/ender project will be able to be used in Good Fortune. How lucky is that? Is anyone else going to make this mystery quilt?

Wish I was able to post the pictures. I can operate this blog when everything works but when it doesn’t I’m not just confused — I’m LOST! I’ll try to get help as soon as possible!

Starting on Bonnies mystery. Was able to take classes from her in Indianapolis earlier this month.

Mary Ann Platt – I think you’re lucky to have taken classes from Bonnie!

  2. Susan the Farm Quilter

I just decided to dive in, but not being home with my stash, I orders fabrics that should be here soon! I’m using grays as my neutrals, greens, teals, corals and yellows…I hope it works!!

I tried to reply TWICE yesterday, and crashed! {#%**>##|.Darn, and that’s saying it nicely.
Looks like you’re coping with the weather and still at the sewing machine. I finished two projects yesterday so gave myself permission to start something new tiday.
No football today but maybe tomorrow. This season just hasn’t grabbed me.

Brenda A. – weather has improved drastically for us -it was 42 today! Makes my animal chores so much easier!

  4. Jackie Baumhauer

I’m in on the mystery. I did last years mystery too. I I finished the top but now needs quilting.

Jackie Baumhauer – was that On Ringo Lake? I didn’t do it and I’ve loved it ever since I saw it finished – I’ll put it on my list. Jackie says HI!

  5. Peggy

Yes on College football!! Minnesota beat Wisconsin!! Woo hoo!! About time!! Been about 15 years!!

  6. Diane Bauer

Working on another quilt being made from a photo–my typical way of working. This one is a variation on a Sophie Car Seat Quilt I found on Pinterest, using Moda’s Hazelwood One Canoe Two layer cake pack that I bought last summer.
The big deal today was a bald eagle sighting close to my house. I am always on the lookout for them and forever in pursuit of the perfect photo. I’m not there yet, but got some nice shots this morning before the clouds rolled in. We are supposed to get snow, but so far have just gotten a few sprinkles. That’s fine with me. I’d rather quilt than shovel!!

Diane Bauer – you are very lucky to have bald eagles around you. My sister, Becky, lives in a wooded area in Forest City and sees them occasionally -as well as live turkeys in her trees!

  7. Sue in Oregon

On that subject…..My husband and I went to Oregon State University. From there it is about a 45-minute drive to the Oregon University campus. Oh, my. Years ago OSU had great football teams and U of O…not so much. Now the tables have turned drastically. So sad. And, this shows my age. Been a very long time.
Any Oregon win, though, is a good one.

I’m working on the mystery too, putting a dent in my cache of 1.5 inch squares. (Yes, I save every scrap of fabric!) I’m using green, purple, red, gold and neutral. It can be either a Fall quilt or a Christmas quilt. I tell myself I have no business starting a NEW quilt, with too many UFOs, but I always start the mysteries anyway.

  9. Sherry Whalen

Hi Mary – I am doing the mystery as well. I have about half of the 4 patches done. I finished hand binding On Ringo Lake last week, just in time to start a new mystery. I has been nice having more mild weather for a while, getting rid of the ice layer to make walking safer and missing a snow storm – yay! We were in your ‘neighborhood’ – in Forest City for Thanksgiving on Thursday. We were at Majopa, the house that the founder of Winnebago built – what an interesting house!

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Sherry Whalen – why were you at Majopa? I’ve never been inside. I didn’t do the mystery last year as I wasn’t feeling well but every time I see On Ringo Lake I just love it! Is yours the same color as Bonnie’s original?

      1. Sherry Whalen

Mary – my SIL works at Winnebago. She decided that we were getting to be a big enough family that we have out grown any of our houses, so she rented it for the day. It is quite a place – lots of wood, stone, windows, and great shapes. Very ’60s/’70s I think. While I was there I kept thinking about what a nice place it would be to set up sewing machines to sew by the windows! On Ringo Lake is my favorite of all the mysteries that I have done. I did do the colors she suggested as the aquas are a favorite of mine, besides – choosing colors is the hardest part of quilting for me, I can sub out colors if I know the end product but not knowing what it looks like would be too stressful for me. I will email you a picture – if we ever have a nice day, or at least a dry day to take a picture outside!

  10. Launa

Mary, I watched some of the Harbaugh Michigan loss today while my husband and son were out in our Polaris Brutus blowing snow. Our private road is two miles from the hiway so it takes a while and it kept snowing.
I tried to access Bonnie’s site when it was mentioned, but it had crashed so I am finishing Temecula Quilt Shop ‘s Secret Santa sew along.
Back to the NotreDame / USC game. It’s 23 degrees here in Idaho near Lost Trails Pass.

Launa – OSU really put the kaboom on Michigan! Oh dear, blowing snow – yuck!

  11. Linda

I worked on the mystery quilt today while hubby and daughter watched the OSU/Michigan game. Go Buckeyes! They were so happy with the win! I finished all of clue 1. This is my 6th Bonnie mystery. I took a class with her last year when she was here in Columbus.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Linda – I won’t be able to finish the first clue tonight but I’ve got a chunk done. We watched your game, too – until the score got so lopsided and Michigan fell apart.

  12. Beverly

I’m doing the BH mystery. This will be my 3rd one. Love scrappy quilts & your latest with the Stars/plaids is just wonderful!!

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Beverly – I worked hard to finish that batik/plaid quilt so I could start the mystery.

  13. Judy

I just started getting Bonnie Hunter’s blog about 6 weeks ago and the week before Indy I heard that would be her last workshop this fall. I missed it! Only about 50 miles away. Darn. Her workshops looked like fun. I have reds, blues, and greens laid out for the mystery quilt. I need to work on oranges or golds and my neutrals. Probably won’t start for a couple of weeks. Need to do some Christmas sewing first. You may keep all of the snow in Iowa. We don’t need any in Indiana. Yes, it was a good day for college football. Purdue over Indiana in the Old Oaken Bucket game. Go Boilermakers!

  14. Diane in Central Ohio

Lots of college football today. Ohio State beat Michigan. I didn’t grow up here in Ohio so cheer for them because everyone else does. Some of the fans are WILD. I finished a table runner for my daughter’s in laws and am working on three more for gifts and two bindings. College football games are great for finishing quilts:) I am anxious to see your quilts:)
