So this was Hazel’s excitement for the day – digging in the barn floor.

I continue to think about the people in the hurricane aftermath – the smell of dead bodies, destruction everywhere, no power – the pictures on tv are like something artificially created, like AI.

Thank you, Becky! You have not only provided useful information but have also shown that these areas and people are not forgotten.
Becky, Thank you.
In regard to hurricane news, from a quilt shop in Ohio I learned of the quilt shop, “5 Little Monkeys Quilt & Sew”. This shop in in the Asheville area. I’ve listened to her on Facebook posts. Yesterday, she shared a link to a shop in Michigan that is accepting quilt donations for those affected by hurricane. I expect she will share when the time is right to send quilting supplies. In addition to her Facebook page, she has a blog on her website https://fivemonkeyquilts.com/blogs/monkeying-around
Before the rain last week, the farmers were busy picking corn in SW Ohio. Today we saw two combines harvesting a bean field. Leaves are starting to turn color, although many have just dried up and fallen.
Barbara, I would also like to donate quilting supplies. Looking forward to a follow up as to where to send things.
I am from a small town that used to be comprised of 90% dairy farmers. It was the main livelihood here. Now, I can’t think of one dairy farmer in this area. Sign of the times. Dairy farming now seems to be for very large companies, not the family farm.
Connie R – I will coordinate something with Barbara – keep watching the blog for details.
Great. I will watch for the details.
Mary, Hazel is such a hunter! I think we need some kind of dog to keep out the coons. Jay said they destroyed two big patches of corn in the field to the east of the house! No sweet corn so when the field corn is in the roasting ear stage they attack that! I loved all the pictures! The chickens are so pretty! Biscuit reminds me of our granddaughter’s dog, Bella. She sat on my lap a long time at the lake last evening. She doesn’t have the best balance since birth but is such a sweetheart and puts up her cold nose to touch you for a kiss.
Our grandson got engaged this week, this is so exciting as it is the first wedding in our family. 💕
Have a safe weekend everyone!
Oh, Hazel!!! How we love your antics!
I’m partial to terriers anyway, but Miss Hazel delights me to no end 🙂
I have a honey farm within a mile of me so I definitely want to know how she makes lemon honey! I drink a cup of hot tea with honey every night in the winter to ward off the cold before bed and lemon honey would be a treat. On toast yummmmm.
I love the Hazel butt, that little stinker is too much fun. I hope she doesn’t smell a rat!
My son that lives in Durham NC called me yesterday, they lived in Ashville for years and he was driving to Ashville for the weekend to help a couple of his friends who have lost their homes. He was emotional while driving into the storm damage, he loved Ashville and would not have ever moved had it not be for career advancement. There is one small town north of Ashville that is completely gone and no one has heard anything from people who lived there. He will help however he can, he’s such a good man.
Hazel, stay clean for mom today!!
Linda – I didn’t know you had a son in NC – my question is always the same – where do these people go if they don’t have a home anymore? Will he help clean up their property? I’ve always heard Ashville is the place to live in that area – a fun area with lots to do. Are all those people in the small town dead? Hazel needs a deep cleaning bath !!!
I spoke with my daughter in law this morning to see how Scott was, I didn’t want to disturb him. That was around 11 and he was on his way with a couple of friends to Marshall, the little town that no longer exists. They were going to help a friend in Marshal that had a small coffee house dig out the mud but they said his shop was destroyed. I will ask him where everyone is now. The arts area was my favorite part of Ashville, so alive and beautiful art everywhere, a fabulous farmers market, magnificent restaurants. everything is destroyed,
Oh that Hazel is a hoot! And Keeper is right there supervising. They must give you so much entertainment through the day.
Sunflower, your chickens are awesome. But how do you tell them apart??
Have a fun weekend everyone
Pat,
Easy, I can’t tell them apart! My only white hen is called snow white and the others are all Henrietta! When I first got the chickens, my sisters and cousins named one after themselves so I have Henrietta Ann, Henrietta Karen, Henrietta Peggy, Henrietta Diane….you get the idea! With five sisters and 13 first cousins who are female, they’re just about all nicknamed. They are very entertaining.
I would like to contribute to sending quilting supplies and will watch for details. Have a great weekend.
Go Tigers ⚾️
That’s hilarious! I like how you think lol
Watching Helena devastation on the news brings tears every time. The best story is the mules delivering medicine & supplies to people in the mountains. That reminds of a historical fiction book about library books being delivered by mule/horses to people in Kentucky as part of Eleanor Rosevelt’s literacy efforts.
Marcia – yes, history repeating itself. It’s hard to imagine what it really looks like there.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. really good book. i haven’t read the sequel yet – think it is the daughter of the book woman. thanks for making the connection. patti in florida
I truly enjoyed both of the books which then lead me down a research hole on not only about the project but also about the blue people of Appalachia.
Hi Mary, busy day, my neighbour gave me some lemons, so l have made lemon honey, delicious! Luna enjoyed it on a sandwich and l am going to have it on toast for a few days. Tomorrow I will make lemon cake, then lemon biscuits during the week as a thank you gift.Afternoons are for quilting and a nap! Hazel is a character, did she find anything? Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
ok let me show my ignorance — what is lemon honey ??? everything lemon is always a treat at our home. thanks
Brenda – I don’t know either so I’ve asked her to share the recipe.
Sandy – please tell us all how to make lemon honey!
well, i just learned something. you can’t start a comment, then leave and go look at yesterday’s comments. when you come back your comment is gone. where did it go? argh!!!
i learned so much about farming equipment. good grief. these farmers spend so much on equipment just to plant and harvest their crop. i will not be complaining about prices for these products in the next little while. a least i’ll try not to complain.
the pictures today are so nice. the chickens, the upside down hazel with her head in a hole. biscuit. i love the picture of the eagle. we have lots of those here. i love watching them swoop down and grab fish out of the pond behind my house.
i am tired tonite. everyone loved the big pieces in that potato chip quilt. imagine i’ll see others soon. it does eat up fabric. found out we are losing three of our angel members. one is very prolific with her machine quilting. moving to michigan. two others have health issues that are causing them to drop out. we will miss them all.
i’m going to bed. hugs to all, patti in florida who loves all the conversations
Having grown up on a large animal/grain farm, I know the labor that goes into our food. The risk w/ weather and cost of equipment is ever increasing. Here in Ohio, we had a drought then Helena arrived and ruined crops. Many farmers will be going bankrupt or at least selling out. The family farm is becoming a thing of the past which is disheartening. Mega farms or corporate farms will be left standing which is not good for any of us.
Marcia – I grew up on a family farm – there aren’t many left. Farmer Tim’s is a family farm however – I was good friends with his mom.
Patti – well, I did know this – from the posting part. I’ve written a post, left to find some details, and my post has disappeared. I would have written such details only to find them gone. It’s heartbreaking for me and I’m usually writing the post late at night so I just delayed bedtime by probably an hour. I even make notes about what I’m going post about so I don’t have to leave the page. Grrr… I know how you feel.
