Here’s a picture from my backyard – evidently I missed a pumpkin last fall and it grew in the grass more vigorously than any vine I’ve ever tried to grow in the garden – and it has several pumpkins on it!!

It’s made mowing pretty challenging however.
This was their fun yesterday – probably a mouse smell in this old railroad tie by the garden fence.

I didn’t bother watching the debate last night – I’m still watching Dexter and by the sounds of the news this morning, the debate was equally as bloody.
My friend Marline is having knee replacement surgery tomorrow after suffering for many months with a painful knee and, like me, she tried the cortisone shot one more time. It didn’t help and consequently she had to wait 90 days for surgery.
Today is book club – I have missed the last 2 months because of appointments. I’ll take notes and tomorrow I’ll list the favorite books. If you recall my favorite new author is Sally Hepworth.
The Fever play the Aces tonight at 6 – for those who are interested.
This is my view this morning.

Mary. thanks for the book list today. Angie, who was your rughooking teacher that passed? I used to do hook rugs and attended retreats. I was just wondering. I also read The Persian Pickle Club.
I saw the corn maze on the news. Very unique and I’m sure it will be a big hit with everyone that lives close to it.
Your volunteer pumpkin vine looks amazingly healthy. I once grew volunteer gourds in our front yard, a pleasant surprise.
I love seeing dog buddies on a mission. Hazel and Keeper are just like little kids on their adventures.
A few trees are starting to turn, and pumpkin spice time is here! 🍁😊🍁
This year we had a pumpkin plant show up right by our back deck. Years ago we used to carve pumpkins on our back deck, but we haven’t carved our pumpkins there in 3 yrs. It is a huge plant, and it’s about to take over the steps up to the deck. There are currently 3 little pumpkins growing, it seems a little inefficient to me to have such a giant vine for only 3 pumpkins!
Debra – well those seeds must have hibernated for 3 years and they decided to wake up in 2024 – haha! I think there’s 2 or 3 pumpkins on my vine but I think it will freeze before they mature.
Mary,
Thank you for keeping this a politics free blog! While I think most of your readers and commenters are all ladies of a similar age, we probably all have different political opinions. But I appreciate that this blog gives us a space to enjoy discussions and pictures of the things we have in common, like quilting, sewing spaces, flowers, pets, farm and home life. So much more positive to celebrate the things we have in common than to angrily pick at the differences we may have.
Sharon – AMEN!
Mary, thank you for a “no politics” blog. We all hear & see enough of it elsewhere to appreciate quilting, dogs,
recipes, gardening & day to day activities of our blog friends.
Joan – my tongue in cheek statement about the debate was poking fun at it rather than anything serious. I wish she hadn’t been offended because it was all meant to be casual
Gee whiz, where is this all coming from! We are nice people here! Sounds likes someone needs a piece of chocolate. What do you think, Mary?? 😁🥰♥️
I thought she was a bit spicy! 🌶️ a casual comment by Mary. No need to be offended as we can do as we please.
Getting back to book reviews. One of my favorite authors is Sandra Dallas who wrote THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB. about quilters during the depression. My rug hooking teachers daughter wanted our group to read it after our teacher passed because it reminded her of our rug group. After reading it we agreed. She slso wrote PRAYERS FOR SALE. These books are a quick read that makes me feel good after reading them.
Anxious to hear about some new book titles to read!! I am not a big Halloween decorator but am thinking about doing a cute fall pumpkin table centerpiece. Love your surprise pumpkin!
Hi Mary, if you think of it, please post that New England soup recipe for Joy that I sent you. If you can’t find it, I will resend it. Thanks so much. I love a good recipe as much as another homemaker.
I’ve been to church this morning to pray alone- it’s a very hard day for me on 9-11. I wish we could all think back to times when we came together to support every human being.
What a beautiful morning sky! And i love the volunteer pumpkin vine – how fun! Yes, a challenge to now around but I’m so glad you let it grow! I’m so ready for fall – it’s been so hot and humid this summer in NE Ohio – and we lack rain terribly. My crabapple tree has lost all its leaves – not because fall is coming, but due to lack of rain. The farmers are struggling so – 22 Ohio counties in drought disaster. Love the nose sniffing picture 😍 I always wonder what my pup is getting sniffs of 🤣
Wow – I’m very political, but do not post things about my view where it is not appropriate. That being said, I DID watch, and I agree – quite bloody on BOTH parties.
Heading to Denver tomorrow to visit my sister in law and family. Haven’t been there for awhile and I need a break. Leaving my mom and the grandkids in my husbands very capable hands. There is a little bit of antiquing and quilts shop hopping lined up for me. Heaven!
The weather has been gorgeous lately but pulling up tomatoes soon. The deer have been eating my ripe ones. I go out to pick and they are just gone. Piles of deer scat back by the woods tell me it’s not raccoons.
Praying for you daily as you navigate your path. My sister in law across the street has been having chemo for about 3 weeks, surgery in November , then 3 more months of chemo. I hate cancer. I’m a survivor and will stand with you gals currently fighting. Take care.
And now, back to the blog about nothing and pumpkins…I had one of those show up in my garden years ago. I couldn’t figure out what it was going to be until two lovely pumpkins showed up later. A beautiful day in northern Vermont and 8 more to come. This is one of the few places I can go and not read anything about our politics. I’m hoping it stays that way.
Pat Smith – I can’t hear anything in my porch either – except the rustle of the corn leaves and some Hwy traffic. And that’s all I want to hear
I love to hear the wind and through the corn fields would be inviting especially with the sunsets
There is some crisp in the morning air. Autumn is coming.
This year I had 1, yes 1 raspberry! Last year I got a pint every day.
I have 1 medium size tomato. Not yet red, but one from that plant is better than none. Last year, I harvested about 6-9 everyday. So much for my green thumb!!!
The sunrise is spectacular this time of the year. I love waking up to them.
Loretta has gone to the beauty shop this morning, I’ll wash all her bedding this morning. She is such good company. She’ll come home looking like a puppy again.
I hate that politics is tearing families and friends apart.
Jo,
One raspberry! Oh, no! I just picked 8 cups this morning and I saw the most incredible spider web on the raspberry bushes. I sent a picture to Mary. I’ve made two pies already and am giving today’s berries to my sister. I will have lots to freeze, too. Take care!
Wow…sounds like someone should have had a few iced teas this morning instead of coffee
Mary, what a beautiful morning view you had. Of course the pumpkin grew so well. I was commenting to my neighbour about lawns, why is it they are so lush in the cracks of cement yet we struggle where there is dirt. Oh well. This year I tried to grow pumpkins in my garden and butternut squash. We had a cooler may and June and I think the neighbours trees are blocking to much light to my veggie garden so I didn’t get anything, very long vines but no fruit at all on the butternut squash and the pumpkins at the end of August were smaller than a golf ball so I pulled them all out. Have a wonderful day.
Teresa – I planted25 hills of assorted pumpkins in the garden and they did nothing – too cold and rainy in May and June so I mowed them off. $65.00 of seed wasted. I really planted them for the kids to share with their friends.
My son and I planted a whole lot of seeds in the composted manure field at the farm where he keeps his horse. So many came up. When I go to get a pumpkin I will try to get a picture and send it to you. They have all different colours orange, orange with green , white and many others.
Teresa – I’ve always had such good luck with fancy pumpkins until this year.
I loved Dexter. It is interesting how much I came to cheer for a serial killer.
I know, we did too! There were a few anxious moments but with the magic of tv he always gets away successfully 🤭! And….he was so handsome so that helped! I wish we had Dexters in place to take care of the evil!
Gwen – well, ain’t that the truth? I have to keep reminding myself but I watched him in another series about the funeral home and just loved him.
Mary not sure where it is but there’s a huge Caitlin Clark corn maise and it was cute. I think it’s in Indiana (where she plays I assume) Google if you can. It was a lot of work for whomever made it
Henners – yes, it’s in Indiana and it’s fabulous!!
How crazy is that pumpkin vine, I do hope you find pumpkins. I didn’t watch the debate since I know who I plan to vote for. Inviting all that rhetoric into my home isn’t necessary. The morning news called it lively. We continue to have some rather cool mornings but beautiful days, fall is coming since the trees are changing color. I hope to finish working in my new sewing space today. Was able to get a few things mended and now I can quilt if I can find where I packed some of the tools.
You should have watched it, it was NOT equally bloody! What a terrible thing to say, about something you didnt even bother to watch.
Vanessa – I listened to the late night shows and the news this morning. Please remember politics do not interest me – I’m just repeating what I heard on the news this morning.
And that is the worst excuse Ive ever heard. Then maybe you shouldnt comment on what you are “hearing” because you couldnt have been further from the truth. Change the channel and maybe ask your Pretend Grandchildren, its their future.
Vanessa, even though you obviously feel very passionate about your responsibility as a voter, the tone of your messages does not fit this blog. An apology for your tone to Mary would be appropriate now.
Wanda, “equally bloody” was a very inappropriate thing to say. So no, Im not apologizing for calling that out.
Vanessa you are coming across very angry and maybe just step back and calm down. Have a few iced teas….😌
Wanda – that’s ok, I don’t need an apology but this is exactly why I won’t discuss politics here on the blog. First of all I don’t understand or know enough about politics to speak intelligently about it.
Pamela, bless your heart, Im not angry at all. However you seem to be. Enjoy your iced Tea, hope it makes you feel better.
