Another Late Night, 8-21-24

I was so engrossed in listening to the speeches last night that I just couldn’t think about writing a blog post. And I remembered to watch Colbert afterwards – a late night for sure. I refuse to discuss politics on the blog about nothing BUT I’d vote for Michelle Obama if she were running for president. Loved her speech!

How do I feel? Many have asked and I’m not sure if I should be worried that I feel so good or just say thank you, God. The three month wait for surgery is because of that hemorrhage in July – all that blood needs to be absorbed – that’s the way I understand it. I have another scan on September 4 and I meet with the surgeon on September 5. I’ll know more then. So, how do I feel? Perfect! Having a malignant tumor in my abdomen would be the furthest thing from my mind.

Which brings me to a mystery package in the mail. Did one of you mail me a bunch of clothes? I hope I don’t end up seeing a bill for these clothes (by mistake) but I also hope one of you did not order them. I get packages in the mail regularly but never anything like this. A sweatshirt, 4 T-shirt’s – they are all size 4XL!!! Rick said I should put one on and take a picture and caption it -“It’s sweet corn season in Iowa!” Those pounds I lost last summer will be found again by the end of sweet corn season.

Are you finding the blog layout changed again?

Time for my second cup of coffee on the porch.

Mary I have always enjoyed the non political blog. I didn’t take this blog as political either. It was just you sharing your life and your view of a speech. I understood that you enjoyed the speech and the way it was given. There was nothing that said you believe the same political leanings or anything. Just you sharing your life as always.
Sending a hug as I feel you need it today.

Mary, You had a great idea with preventing any political discussions in this blog. You should have stuck to it yourself but now YOU have opened up a big problem. A speech (written by a staff of writers) does NOT make one qualified to become President of the USA. Your job as an American is to check out both parties before being lead blindly into fantasy land. The democratic party has turned to a dictatorship which our grandchildren will be paying for. Please, everyone, check out AMAC and other political platforms to get another perspective and open your eyes. By the way, Walz is absolutely destroying Minnesota and we can’t stop him.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet – you’re right – I didn’t realize Walz was disliked and I will check out AMAC.

    2. Carla

I watched her speech. What I heard was an extremely wealthy person who lives in a multi million dollar mansion in the Hamptons trying to sound like she is a regular person. That bit about her parents being suspicious of people who had “more than they need” while other kids were in need…. all the while expecting us to forget that they have more than they need. That paired with the anti white person talk, and the anti generational wealth ( from a couple who will most certainly be passing their wealth down to their daughters), told me all I really need to know about the Obamas. Just my opinion. I’ll leave if I make anyone uncomfortable. Life’s too short and I have real concerns for America. Trust in the Lord everyone! Blessings

Carla – no need to leave! We can all
Have opinions and still be friends, can’t we? I believe Freedom was the subject last night and isnt that what a democracy is? I’m terribly sorry if I offended you. Please feel free to unsubscribe

Thank you Mary, I ,too, believe we can have opinions! I’m a teacher by nature, so it’s very hard for me to not point out errors in logic when I see them. I really try to do it with kindness, though because I want to provoke critical thinking. I appreciate all you do to create this community of what I’m sure are some very unique people!

Janet – I am more than willing to listen – please tell me how Walz is destroying MN – I have no idea what you mean – answer if you choose. I don’t believe what I said was very political – I went back and read the blog and comments. I said I liked Michelle O’s speech – what’s wrong with that? I hate confrontation on this blog and I’m glad there isn’t much of it usually. This blog is free to you – l pay the bill. Please feel

Mary, There is quite a list of things Tim Walz has done. The democratic party is in the majority so they are passing a lot of programs that can’t be addressed. In the years 2022 & 2023 he announced the citizens of Minnesota overpaid our taxes by 16 & 17 Billion dollars. Instead of refunding it, he spent it on sanctuary programs AND raised our taxes. The state is refurbishing the governor’s mansion so his family had to move elsewhere. Instead of moving to his personal home, he decided to move to a mansion on a lake for $45,000.00 a MONTH. When the riots and burnings were destroying Minneapolis because of George Floyd, Tim Walz REFUSED to call in the National Guard (after the Minneapolis mayor and then President Trump called him). Our crime rate in Minneapolis is off the charts – shootings daily. Unless you’re going to a big venue with a big group, you stay away, too dangerous. Last week, 4 kids ages 11 to 13 were shot (will recover). They were DRIVING a stolen car. Being a sanctuary state is awful with homelessness and crime. Our town of six thousand has a homeless encampment down by our river – we have to stay away. Walz claims he achieved a rank of Command Sergeant Major which is a blatant lie. Sorry, I hate to be so negative but this is a reality and there’s more. I expect our governor to support the police and good values for the safety of citizens – he doesn’t.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet – thank you for the explanation. I, too, would have trouble with a leader choosing to pay $45,000/month rent with taxpayers money when he has a personal home. I do believe there is a middle ground where we could all work together. I live a very secluded remote life compared to most people and I prefer it that way. That also means I am not informed about what’s happening just 150 miles from my home.

Use a credit card–it’s the bank’s money. If there is a dispute the bank or credit union has practices in place to act quickly.
A debit card is your money.
—If a credit card used for a fraudulent transaction it might result in $50 cost to you or $0 if you report the loss before the credit card is used. If a debit card is reported lost or stolen within two days you’re liable for $50. Waiting longer than two days may result in $500 liability. If longer than 60 days, the full amount.
—Use a credit card to book hotel deposits. With debit cards hotels charge the debit card immediately withdrawing funds from a checking account. Using credit card only places a hold on the card’s available funds.

    1. Cindy Sabinske

Li, I agree with your info, this is exactly what my son told me. He is my go-to person.

      1. Li

I like the way your son thinks. Many people these days miss out on credit card protection in regard to questionable charges or fraudulent transactions. I also avoid Venmo and such. Cannot imagine tapping my phone to pay a retailer. I am such a klutz who knows where my money would go? I find payPal quite handy (from my laptop).

I am sorry you have to wait so long for surgery but now understand why. It is wonderful you are feeling well and are not in lots of pain. Thanks for the blog, Mary.
    Sending Hugs & Prayers, 🥰

Mary I have to agree with you about Michelle Obama. I’d certainly vote for her.
I really like your new little quilt and all the quilts. The flying geese one is a favorite.
So your cleaned up space looks great but I kept looking for the parakeet cage but it really wasn’t in view. Gosh Mary you have all the animals and a bird too. How did you acquire the parakeet?
I’m not familiar with Judy but she has a great studio. I especially like her table runner with the birds.
I’m glad you’re feeling as well as you are. Still praying that all goes well with the surgery when they schedule it.
The last couple days we’ve had glorious temperatures. In the 60’s in the morning and cool and not humid during the day. The 90’s are coming back but en joying what we’ve get right now.
Hope you’re enjoying some nice and warmer weather.
Did those hens lay all their eggs in that one place.? It made me laugh and think of the saying about not putting all your eggs in one basket.
    Enjoy more convention time.

      Pat,
I am so envious of your temperatures! It was 99 here today. It’s 10:30pm now and 79. The humidity is killing me. Usually we have a nice wind happening, but it has disappeared. Good news though. The forecast is for cooler temps in the mid or lower 90’s. Whoohoo! Plus the cotton farmers are loving this weather.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Patricia – about 10 years ago a fellow in town advertised free parakeets. He raised them and I got two. By the time I got all the equipment my free parakeets cost about $60!! About two years ago I must have left the cage door open because all I found was feathers and two feet on the floor! I was just sick! I will miss his chatter and chirping when he dies but honestly I won’t miss the mess! I’ll put the picture on the blog. I really wanted him to have a pal but then I still would have had only one parakeet in the end. He loves his little green plastic bird pal!

      1. Patricia

Oh gosh Mary, I’m sorry you lost one of your parakeets. I do understand the mess but would enjoy the chatter as well. I’m content to watch the birds at my feeder and all of he busyness of them flitting about in the yard. Thanks for responding.
        Hugs and prayers.

Yes the blog layout now has a comment section where before I did not have it. I know you said to go online but I was too lazy to go out and get online.

Glad you are feeling better. Bob – my husband – has a severe case of shingles in his eye, face and scalp. Reacted to meds and ended up in ER with dehydration and lack of oxygen. Never a dull moment here.

On the good side, I had my cataracts removed and have waited out the healing time. I now have new glasses and prescription polarized sunglasses. My double vision is no more and I can see better than I have seen in years. Sewing is so much easier now! I will take any small blessings I am handed. Still GI issues but I can deal with one thing not a bunch of things. I feel very OLD!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Polly – I also feel very old! Poor Bob! I understand shingles is very miserable. And yes, I know that feeling of being able to see again!! It’s wonderful!!

I love the saying, “We never know how much our bad luck has saved us from our worst luck.” Mary, trust that God has you own the right path and that he’s right there with you keeping you strong. Sending love, prayers and blessings!

Please watch your credit card for any purchases that are not familiar. There is a scam where items are sent ,and then they place a review in your name on their website to increase sales .The charge may not be big ,but they could access the card later. Just be vigilant.hopefully you just received someone else’s order by mistake,or someone mis-judged your size. I am glad you are feeling well-hopefully that will be resolved soon and you won’t have the surgery to think about.🍁. Take care.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

      S. Lenz – I’ve read about that scam. Called the number today / it’s being investigated / I’m getting rid of that credit card and requesting a new one. Otherwise I’m changing to a debit card from my bank!

      1. Judy1522

Mary before switching to a debit card check out the reimbursement for fraudelent charges. Usually a credit card is better for reimburesement. A debit card can have a smaller amount for reimbursement and sometimes a shorter time limit. It really just depends on your banks policies.

I have two of Michelle Obama’s books that were gifted to me by 2 different people who knew I adored her kindness and lessons on life. I agree with Jo on the beautiful words that were said on the strength their mothers played in their lives. I have a good quilting friend who told her 2 boys and 2 girls that they could go to college only after they had done service work someplace for at least 6 months after they graduated from high school. She said that would teach them about caring for others and had learned of it thru Michelle Obama. All 4 are exceptional children, not cynical for having done what they did and such a delight to have conversations with when we have seen them. The last child just became a Marine.
Stay positive Mary all will work out as it’s just as important in your well being to keep yourself healthy. My oncologist told me attitude is everything.

That bunch of clothes in a 4X! Sure made me laugh out loud! The picture of you on your lawn mower would look a lot different!!
I’m happy you feel so good!
We have had so much fog this summer, which makes me wonder about the winter! You know the old wives tale! I hardly want to mention it!
I have been struggling with a musical instrument panel to make a quilt for my granddaughter who is very musical! But the fabric with the panel are gold, black, tan! Not girly pictures at all! I’m putting it back in time out in the closet!
I have 4 loaves of zucchini bread in the oven and then will go to the freezer!
Jay is mowing the lawn. We had .46 of rain yesterday. The heat is going to come back this weekend. We need it for the crops!
Now that I decided to put away the music panel I can do the binding on a couple of quilts and clean off my leftover stuff in the table. That would be a good thing! Ha! There’s more than two quilts (hahaha).
    Have a good day!
Watch your credit card for an infringement! I had that about a year ago so I stopped that and about 2 weeks later I got a shipment of several pair of black tennis shoes that were all the same size?? Not my size but! No return address, nothing! So I waited to see if there would be a bill. But never received one. So I donated them to the foster children’s place in SF. Crazy!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – could you find her favorite color in a metallic fabric? You’d be tying into the gold plus making it more feminine. I’ll be donating these 4XL clothes, too!

Glad you’re feeling better but definitely understand the worry. After going through breast cancer and all it contains (surgeries, treatments, etc), I think the waiting part was the hardest. I know meeting with the surgeon next month will give you some answers (and hopefully they’re all good)!

I’m so enjoying the DNC convention – it’s bringing such energy and hope and joy back to the country. Michelle’s speech was wonderful, as was that guy’s who followed her 😉. Can’t wait to see what the next couple of nights hold!!

Sixty- nine degrees this a.m. in northwest GA, what a treat as it gives us a little taste of fall. Glad you are feeling well during this waiting period, wanted to see my primary doctor but she doesn’t have an opening until January so will see her nurse/practitioner. Gets to be a real song and dance as you get older. Thank goodness I am in good health and hope yours will be restored in the very near future.

My wildlife treat is seeing a young red fox going along the tree line at the back of my boyfriend’s house. The mother fox had three kits and they do roam the neighborhood.

I read about a “brushing scam” where they then can sign up for accounts on various online platforms and post fake reviews in your name to falsely boost the ratings of the seller or online marketplace and thus increase sales of dubious products. This is illegal
1 – Never call or contact the seller.
    2 – Never pay.
    3 – Keep it.
    4 – Dispose of it.
5 – Return it if it is marked with a return address.
6 – Notify the e-commerce platform – if the unsolicited goods arrive via Amazon, eBay or other third-party sellers
7 – Monitor for suspicious activity on your accounts.
    8 – Change your passwords.

This one confuses me. Sometimes it is cheaper for the company to mail out merchandise rather than restock a return. They don’t have the storage space or the personnel to process so they just send an order anywhere.

RS in Iowa, thanks for telling us about the critters you see at wild life area. I, like Mary, worry about not having a pet after Loretta is gone, but will the next one outlive me and who will take care of them like I do?
Loretta is a rescue, I know she was an older dog when we got her. She will celebrate 10 years with me at thanksgiving.

Mary, few people can deliver a message like Michelle Obama! What a tribute they gave to their moms.
I’m so glad you’re feeling good. It is worrisome to feel that way after your diagnosis, and to wait so long for treatment. Medical has changed a lot in the last few years.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – ah, Loretta is living the good life, too! I do believe I have found two people who would take Hazel if she outlives me but if she dies before me, can I really live without a dog? I would consider senior foster dogs. Then there would be a plan for the dog if I die. Yes, I so enjoyed Michelle’s speech and I’ve been hearing those two zingers all day – she’s got my vote! Haha!!

Glad to hear you are doing okay, enjoying the porch time! It has been very pleasant weather here for a few days. We have been to a local wildlife area several evenings to spot the pelicans, swans, and deer. Last night we watched muskrats gathering (eating?) reeds, and last week there were a pair of otters to entertain us as they ate. I don’t have animals at home like you do, but sure enjoy these.
Good luck with the mystery package!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

RS – is the wildlife area very active right now with animals migrating? My bird feeders are nearly congested with birds passing through.

      1. RS in N. Ia.

The ducks are starting through, there were about 15 great blue herons near each other, and a batch of 30 large white egrets in the long grass on shore. We’ve had goldfinches and more hummingbirds than earlier this summer. Hubby said there was a huge flock of robins on the golf course Sunday evening. So, my opinion is it is the start of migration!
Most of this is at the Union Slough wildlife refuge, Kossuth county, open for drive thru tours until Sept. 20.

        1. Cindy Sabinske

I consider the start of migration when our many robins just leave ever so quietly towards the end of July. This year I have not seen many hummingbirds coming and going either. I saw two robins early this morning, it is so quiet with out them. The Dickcissals and Chipping Sparrows are gone too. I did hear a Song Sparrow yesterday which surprised me.
