Blowing Away In Iowa, 11-12-24

WIND! From the southeast so we have nothing to stop it – the barn has no protection either although I know the chickens are fine – they were outside most of the day.

I just got a very sad email from Bonnie McKee’s daughter in Oregon. Bonnie passed away yesterday and we had just had a long conversation on Sunday afternoon and evening. Readers become real friends and I counted Bonnie as a faithful reader and correspondent – I am in tears thinking about the many things we talked about over the past months, years even. She put my email address in her book and that’s how her daughter knew to let me know she passed away. Bonnie told me her husband suffered from dementia and she had serious heart problems but she didn’t complain. I know her pets, too, and they’ll miss her.

Photos

The pin….. I cut it off as close to the head as I could and left the head in the quilt. End of story. Thanks, Everybody!

Sorry to hear about your friend Bonnie. I love the red quilt but that dog pillow, is wonderful. Did you make it?

  2. Kim from Wi

I’m so sorry to hear of Bonnie passing, I recall her posting from Oregon. May she rest in peace and may her family find comfort in their memories of her. Mary, your red quilt is charming on the chair, and it should be used after all the battles with getting it done. I admire all the items that Patti gets done, yowzer! The bird bath had a sheet of ice on it this morning and the grass with covered in white frost. I do hope the snow doesn’t show up before turkey day. Traveling to Spring Green this week to meet friends and do some touring.

Sorry to hear of the loss of our friend Bonnie. Rest in peace. Mary your red quilt looks great on your chair. I love it! I know you’ve had some struggles with that quilt. I think of all the positives that has come of it, all the advice on getting the pin out (or leaving it in) and all the offers on your blog from your friends offering to bind it for you. It truly takes a village. I sometimes put a project away out of frustration, but not you. Patti, you must have more than 24 hours in your day. You are amazing in what you finish & what you gift to others. Thank you for your inspiration.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – I thought it was less trouble to just bind it myself than ship it to someone. And it wasn’t bad – I think by the time I get to the binding on any quilt, I’m just plain sick of it and this one was nothing but trouble! Haha!!! Done now – moving on.

So sorry to hear about Bonnie McKee’s
passing; my condolences to her family.
Patti in FL, your projects are all great. I love making pillowcases.
Mary, your red quilt is wonderful, and I like how you handled ‘the pin.’
My mom bought a tied baby comforter at a church bazaar for my second baby. I had him wrapped in it while I was feeding him and was horrified to find a pin in the border. This was before I was a quilter, so I try to use very few pins when making baby quilts.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

I have a comment section! i have missed seeing everyone’s comments. My daughter and granddaughter were here for a few days. I got to teach her the sewing portion of the home economics class. Home schooling allows them to chose some things that schools nowadays do not offer.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Polly – you mean you haven’t had a comments section???? What changed in your system that you’re aware of? There’s been no update on my end – I do not understand do you?

  6. polly perkins

i have a comment button I have missed seeing everyones comments My daughter and grand daughter were here for a few days. I got to teach her the sewing portion of her home economics semester. They do home schooling and is so great that they can pick things like this to do for credit. Nowadays they do not do the important life skills that were available in the “olden days”.

Dear Mary, I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your long-distance friend, Bonnie. Somehow, losing friends is nearly as hard as losing a family member. Family knew you “when”, but friends know you “now”. I don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to call my friend, Jana, and tell her, “I cooked today! Boy, will you be impressed.” or “Your quilt is bound and ready for you.” She knew how I hate to cook and loved to finish her quilts for her. I hope pleasant memories of shared conversations will keep Bonnie in your mind and heart and bring a smile to you when you think of her.

No sun here, just a cloudy sky, but not too cold. Our neighbor is blowing leaves for us and that should be the end of fall cleanup. I was tempted to rake but decided to follow “orders” instead. Dh has had one eye done (cataract surgery) and the other set for surgery tomorrow. We have the eye drop situation down to an art! I’m hoping that with better sight his coordination and balance will improve a little. Darn Parkinson’s!
No sewing for me lately, but I’m itching to get to the nine quilts from church the ladies brought over to finish for LWR. Glad the red quilt vs pin situation worked out. I’ve had to work a few pins to a seam, but I’ll never forget my mother telling me to “watch for pins” while trying on one of the many dresses my Nana made for me when I was a kid! It was good advice. Nana sewed with the peddle to the metal and overlooked more than a few pins in the process. Ha! And I’ve been told that I sew like my Nana…Vroom!

So sorry to hear about Bonnie 😥

Absolutely LOVE your red quilt – it looks beautiful on the chair and I’m glad it’s done for your sake! Kudos 👏

  9. Janice

Mary, this is sad news indeed about Bonnie’s passing. My condolences to you and to Bonnie’s family. I love your red quilt, especially with the red flower print. And, it looks so nice on the chair. I love seeing Three in your photos. He seems to get along really well with all the other animals, even sharing a chair with Keeper. Sunny here today, but the wind is very strong and cold. Glad I wore my heavy parka when I did errands earlier today. Patti you are a very prolific quilter and your quilts are really wonderful. I need to go into my sewing room and make some scrap quilts too. Janice Traverse City area.

  10. NancyTD

Sorry to hear about Bonnie. Thoughts go out to her family
The red quilt turned out great. We are all hard on ourselves—no one notices things but the maker herself. No one has ever told me there was a mistake in the gift I gave them.
Patti the pillowcases are a great idea for Christmas gifts for kids.

  11. Vicki in Seattle

So sorry hear about Bonny’s passing. Condolences to her friends and family. I felt like she was a neighbor as we both were on the west coast.
Patti, keep up the amazing work. What a blessing you are to many.
Fran, prayers to you and your granddaughter as you wait for the baby.
Rita, my prayers will continue for your family.
It is a very rainy day here and a great one to be in my sewing room. I’m working on a Majestic Mountain quilt,
It is a free pattern on Bonnie Hunter’s site. Also watching the golden ginko leaves fall or blow off.
    Happy Wednesday, everyone!!

  12. Ann i PA

I’m so sorry to hear about Bonnie. I’m sure connecting with her just before she passed meant a lot to both of you. My condolences to you and her family. Patti’s quilts and pillow cases are wonderful. Glad you resolved the pin problem and can now enjoy that gorgeous red quilt. There is something about scrappy fabrics and red that I love! No rain here, but the extreme wind died down. It was 23* when I returned the bird feeders to the yard early this morning. (they come in at night because of raccoons, possums and an occasional bear) The birdbaths were frozen. Way to go Patti-you are an inspiration! I’m trying not to buy new fabric unless I need some to finish a quilt. I like the idea of quick quilts – I’m trending from small table toppers and wall hangings to large throws incorporating larger blocks to use up as much fabric as possible. Keep up you wonderful blog about nothing. Stay warm, stay well. xxoo

  13. Jan in AZ

Condolences to Bonnie’s family. So hard to have made contact only to hear of her passing two days later. Sorry for the loss, Mary.
Rita, so sorry for all the health challenges in your family. Prayers for comfort. Numbers 6: 24-26. That passage I sang in the church choir at the end of service when I was in high school. Just recently it was brought back to my attention. May it be of comfort to you.
Pztti, I like the idea of using more yards in quilts than yards purchased. That will be part of my sewing resolutions for 2025. Maybe that will help make a dent in my stash. Mary, your red quilt is on my list of projects to do which will help make a huge dent in some material I’ve had for about five years. Thanks, ladies.
Love the red quilt!! Loved seeing Hank in an earlier post, too!

Mary, you can take something and crush the head of the pin and never know it’s in there. Have a good day.

  15. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, so sorry to hear about Bonnie, but wonderful that her daughter let you know of her passing. Patti you are an inspiration to all of us! I’m amazed at all you are able to accomplish each day! I’m sure your pet quilts will be so appreciated! The quilts you made for your sister & friend are beautiful! I’m sure they’ll love their special gifts! I just finished piecing a top that I started at our recent retreat. I’ve never had fabric fray the way most of this did!! I did starch each piece which I hoped would help. I’m hoping to get it ready to quilt later today. But have to get my outside fall work done first. Update on Ron, to date he’s received over 30 cards & he’s loved opening the cards & reading the messages! It certainly has put a smile on his face! He’s amazed that cards have come from all over the USA!! My son & daughter in law joined us for dinner at a very nice restaurant. My son is a 23 yr retired veteran with the Ohio National Guard. One deployment to Germany for 18 mo. Ron was selected to take the Honor flight in 2014 & said it was amazing! I know some of you are Veterans & or married to Veterans, so am hoping you all had a wonderful Veteran’s Day. It warms my heart to see our men & women who’ve served our country being honored for their service!

  16. Sue in Marion, IN

Mary, I know that red quilt was a PITA but I just love it! Gorgeous! I just finished a quilt of honor for our VA and it was lovely when finished but it too, was crazy-making. It was a giant star made of HST’s in the center, some of which I got turned around and had to rip and re-sew. Then I tried to quilt it on my new Janome, did 2-1/2 rows and ripped that out—I’m just not familiar enough with that machine to quilt on it yet, so I went to my old Pfaff with the built-in even feed. Was 2/3 done, it was looking great. I had it rolled, so unrolled and pressed it to make sure it was nice and flat, and pinned the edge. Finished the quilting, got ready to trim, and……GIANT PLEAT.🤬. At least it was near the edge, but had to rip 4 rows about 18” to redo. I hate ripping out quilting. Well, anyway, it looked good when done and was presented to a vet this week.

So sorry to hear about Bonny!

    1. Jo in Wyoming

That much ripping is a labor of love!! It’s vert frustrating, but once you get the machine to understand who’s the boss, the quilting process is a lot easier, and a lot less ripping!

    2. Cindy from Minnesota

I had to look up the definition of the PITA quilt! Hilarious, very true! I have been working on a few of those, and it’s a struggle for sure! Just about done with a sampler quilt from 2007 or thereabouts…soon I will be working on newer items! Not ready to give up just yet, I am suffering a bit from burnout tho. Stay warm everyone! It is a gray rainy day here in SW Minnesota..we need the rain desperately so just dress warm! Sew on! Condolences to Bonnie’s family in their loss.

  17. Fran Dixon

We have rain and wind here in SW Iowa today.

People are busy I see. I esp like the potato chip quilt. I enjoy all the photos

I am in the midst of reading a Sally Hepworth book “The Mother-in-Law. Second book I have read of hers. I learned of this author through this blog.

I am anxiously awaiting for news of a granddaughter who has been induced to give birth to her first child. Taking a little early as granddaughter is having some health issues. This does not help the anxiety issue. I will be hand delivering the last few things I made for baby over Thanksgiving if the weather holds.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran – I loved the Mother-in-law!!! I bought Sally’s newest book called Darling Girls – good so far but pretty “dark”

  18. Joyce from NY

So sorry to hear about Bonnie. Your red quilt is beautiful, I love it! I’m working on a tree skirt for my oldest grandson! We got a hard frost last night, it has been so windy the past few days.

  19. joy in NW Iowa

So sorry to hear about Bonnie in Oregon. My sympathy to the family and friends.
Patti there are two hobbies! One is buying the fabric and one is using it! 😝
It is raining!!! Yippee!! There are puddles!
I am suppose to have my toe checked today but it looks fine and I feel like staying home 😊. Ever have that?
Mary, I love your red quilt on that chair! So petty! It just brightens up the whole place and makes it inviting to come and sit a spell. 💕

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I put the red quilt on the big chair before I washed it for the first time. It doesn’t fit as perfect as I had planned but that’s just because it’s the _______red quilt! Haha! What a long ordeal with one simple quilt – I can’t wait to start something else.

  20. Ginger S in New Hampshire

I am so sorry to hear of Bonny’s passing. Sending sympathies to you and her family. Your red quilt turned out so nice in spite of all of the problems . Sometimes that just happens. Patti amazes me with all of the projects that she produces. A good heart in that woman for sure!!!! My book club met yesterday and we have picked most of the books that we want to read for next year. It’s always fun to read things that I wouldn’t pick if on my own. Our November pick was By Her Own Design by Piper Huguley. It is about the woman who designed Jackie Kennedy’s wedding dressed. We all liked it very much. We had lots of wind yesterday too Mary. Take care and enjoy today!

  21. Kathy in western NY

I do remember Bonnie in Oregon posting comments so it’s sad to lose our friend. Thank you to her daughter reaching out in her sadness to let you know.
    My sympathy to her family.
Your quilt is beautiful and will bring warmth during these next few months when I like to see red out for decorations all the way through Valentine’s Day.
Today my husband is helping a couple others from our church by bringing up items from our former pastors basement as water caused an issue and repairs are needed. They will do assembly line as I see my husband struggling more and more with stairs since his stroke so he’ll be put at top of stairs and putting items on a table in garage. The pastor is the same age as us and caught Covid early on before medication or vaccines and never fully recovered. His lungs and heart were damaged so on oxygen 24/7, was in the hospital for 6 months but PT did help him to walk slowly with the aid of a walker again. It was touch and go for so long with his recovery, speech is slow, but he will somewhat comprehend why help is there today for him and his wife. They lost their only son. It makes you appreciate every good day we have on this earth.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – now there’s a sad story – Covid did all that to him? We’ve heard of some new cases around here – I am staying home. Yes, I will keep the red quilt out through Valentines Day although I
Iike to switch to blue and white in January so we’ll see.

      1. Kathy in NY

Yes catching Covid did the damage to heart and lungs as he was still working till he was striken. Viruses can attack organs. That’s why when my husband was in ICU in 2021 with an unknown virus, which led to Afib, liver damage and a stroke, the ER team explained the virus was the foremost item to address. I was so thankful he could walk after 5 days as it could have affected mobility too. No you don’t want any virus.
I too like to think blue and white in January!!

        1. Jo in Wyoming

Oh Kathy, take care. I think it’s extremely hard when our guys can’t resume their much loved activities after an illness. My husband had a huge shop, we called The Barn. His whole body was ecstatic when he spent part of his day playing with all the toys out there. It was devastating to him and me when he got so sick he couldn’t walk that far. Now when I go out there looking for something, I can see him at his different stations fixing things. Using a saw, pulling an engine, cutting tractor gears, making an old sewing machine work. On and on.
          Sorry, I’m having a bad day…again.

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – I’m sorry you’re having g a bad day – Rick did the chores for me this morning and after 40 minutes I went down to check on him. I was afraid he had fallen. He can do so little of what he used to do – yes, it’s sad

          2. patti

jo, i’m sorry you were having a bad day. look on all these memories and the joy it gave to your husband to be in his barn doing things. that is how i feel about my quilt studio areas. i am in heaven there and can do anything. yes, it is hard on us because we miss our spouses and others so badly. try to remember that they are now in a better place and free of any pain. plus we will see them again. hugs to you, patti in florida

I love all of Pattis quilt and pillowcases!!!!

  23. Linda in central Iowa

I love, love, love your red quilt! When I look at all the projects I have made, the ones that gave me the most problems seem to be the ones I like the best. Go figure. We still haven’t had a killing frost here, much less any flakes in the air. Flowers are still blooming. Hubby had to mow yesterday – the grass is still growing, especially after the rain we had last week. But thankful for the rain to put some moisture in the ground before winter sets in. Sorry to hear of Bonnie in Oregon’s passing. It’s always hard for the surviving family and friends, but seems even harder near the big holiday/family time seasons.

  24. Carmen

Your quilt looks lovely on that chair, I really love the color and pattern! So glad the pin issue is a done deal!
Very sorry to hear about Bonnie, my condolences to you and her family!

  25. Rita in Iowa

Mary so sorry to hear about Bonnie, Thoughts and prayers to her family also.

The pictures of nature, pets and animals, home decor for the fall and the beautiful quilts have been stunning. I’m still working on Hexie pieces and have 37 blocks made. Will have enough to make 3 lap size tops as the blocks are big.
As far as family health updates, my brother will have some tests this week to see where he stands with the cancer. After having his stroke he has recovered quite well and continues with speech therapy twice a week in his home. He isn’t supposed to drive so one of my brothers has been his driver to appointments. Will keep you informed as how things go.
My husband’s skin cancer when removed came back with clean edges. He is doing fine and no restrictions. Cancer was on his shoulder.
My total knee replacement in September went well, I am done with going to PT and 6 week checkup was all thumbs 👍. I will continue with doing PT at home and doing lots of walking. I am doing pretty much everything and only hesitate with going down the basement steps as they are not the standard rise. I keep working at it though.
My daughter in Texas who has been dealing with breast cancer since the beginning of the year has made the decision not to have radiation treatment. She already has had chemo. The decision was because there was know way of knowing if the radiation would help or not because if there was any remaining cells they were too small to pick up on the scans. It would delay her reconstructive surgery for another 7 months. She just wants to move on. She called last night and said her surgery is scheduled for end of January.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. You are an amazing bunch of ladies.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita – I am so glad to hear about your daughter and her decision to not have radiation is right on! I’ve had to make such a decision recently and I decided sooner rather than later.

  26. Jean

Mary I just love that red quilt of yours! The shade of red in that fabric is perfect! So glad you used it. I’m starting to use up my treasured fabrics also. What good are they stored in a bin someplace?
Sorry about Bonnie. It’s tough losing a friend.

  27. Sharon G.

Mary – Sorry to hear about Bonnie!
I spent the day with paperwork and then off to my sister’s house to watch over her and her 3 dogs. Her son bought us soup and sandwiches for lunch and made us dinner, too.
    Take care , Mary!

  28. Patricia

I’m so sorry about your friend Bonnie. It’s so upsetting especially when you had just talked to her thinking everything was all right. We lost 2 of our quilting friends this past year. One was only 68 and the picture of health. She had a fatal heart attack in her home all alone. She had called 911 but had passed by the time they got there. We were all shocked and devastated. It’s hard getting old when your body just doesn’t want to function well anymore.
I’ve been out of touch the last month, but have enjoyed all your pictures and stories. I’m terrible at getting myself to bed and your notice pops up around 1:00 AM or 2:00 in the morning
Loved your red fabric quilt but so sorry for the pin issue. I hope you figured out what to do.
Patti in Florida amazes me. Love all her quilts especially the one for her sister.
We had a quilt guild meeting tonight and presenters with a short program. We had a small wool appliqué ornament to work on. Have never used the staple method to secure the appliqué while cutting out each piece. I don’t think I like it as getting out the staples is a bear.
We have such accomplished quilters who do such quality work. They all amaze me.
Tonight we will have the first hard freeze of the season. All greenery will be gone.Temperatures have been very moderate though up and down. And has been breezy here too. Danger of fire because of haw dry it’s been.
    I better go to bed.
    Hope your day is sunny.
    Pat in Md

Mary, I’m so sorry about your friend, Bonnie. Your red quilt is a lovely in preparation for the holiday season.

i am sorry to hear about bonnie in oregon. i hope she wasn’t in too much pain and is now in peace. it’s always hard to hear of a reader and/or friend passing.
did you decide to put your red quilt on the couch for the animals? i thought you would want to wrap up in it yourself. maybe you will rest on this sofa with the red quilt?
i’ve told you all that my daughter lives in the middle of nowhere in new hampshire with her ducks. she sent a video tonight of several super big ducks parading across her backyard and a bit later here come her ducks going as fast as they can trying to catch up to the big ducks. as if wanting to be with their own. i found it comical. she was glad they didn’t catch up.
it was a slow day today. i had brought an older book downstairs not too long ago. flipping through it tonight i found lots of great ideas for quick quilts, always concentrating on contrast. that is something i always tried to teach my students. without contrast, your quilt ends up mush.
also found out that mr. ed tracked that big quilt. it will probably be delivered tomorrow instead of friday. opps. well, it will definitely be a surprise. will let you guys know.
i’ve been tracking fabric in/out this year. as of today i’ve used 44 more yards than i’ve bought. that needs to change or i’ll never get this fabric used. but the joy of purchasing fabric is so satisfying. then deciding what to do with it. ah well. happy dreams to all, patti in florida
