Checking the Chicks, 4-14-26

All day – go to the barn and check the chicks – of course they’re all right. Why wouldn’t they be?

And here are some of the oldies but goodies:

Rocky and one of his harem
Dot
Alyssa
Bearded Lady
Our first trip of spring to the hay ground
No stick is too big for a JRT
Terrible picture of more road construction in town – ugh
Just finished this book that Connie recommended. Pretty good but maybe a little “tame” for me? ha

Great post today, Mary! What inspirational and fun quilts. Those little chicks and bunnies (on the quilt) are too cute. I love Cindy’s blue and white quilt.

Teresa, I will be anxious to hear about your new colt!

Jeanie, my prayers are with you and your family.

Ah Mary, the blog about nothing but variety! That is for sure! The chickens and the dogs and the quilts! Oh and the cats blocking the TV. The cats what you to pay attention to them!
Jay has been sick since Friday/Saturday with what we thought was a horrible cold. But, he has all the symptoms of type B flu. He did go to the doc on Monday and got amoxicillin but oh the cough! Awful! Constantly day and night. You know how that goes, neither of you sleep! Last night he didn’t cough as much, so we slept in a stupor! You don’t want this crap! Sue hope I don’t get it!
Went to Sioux Falls to my doctor appointment today….thats a switch, right? Then on to Costco and home. Enough!
Those bunnies on that quilt are just so cute!

Joy – ooh, Influenza B – I’m sure he’s very sick. And that coughing is exhausting, isn’t it? One time someone told me to put Vicks on the soles of my feet to stop coughing at night and I did and I remember it worked pretty well. I told a friend today that the only place we go is to the dr. Haha! Seems that way although I’m really good now and no appts coming up.
The blog keeps me on the straight and narrow – ha!!!

    Mary,
Oh, what a great post! Loved all the quilts shown. Your rooster is one stunningly handsome boy. I love Dot..great name for her.
We are getting sporadic rain here today. Worked in the garden and yard yesterday and was hoping to continue but I will wait. I have my seeds planted and am now in the “potting up” stage as the seedlings are growing and need a little more room. So I have been working on that today. If you remember, my son was married last year and I grew flats and flats of flowers. This year I am so happy to be planting what I want and no stress of a wedding! I am planting lots of vegetables too.
Take care everyone. And Jeanine, I am saying a prayer and thinking good thoughts for your daughter and son-in-law. 🌻

Ohhh! I sew LOVE the idea of using a patchwork of a state in “HOME” instead of the “O.” Must, must put that one in my “idea” book. I recall those days of chicks in the brooder house so well. My collie always kept an eye on them to make sure they were OK, especially when they were old enough to come out. Can’t imagine a better way to grow up than on the Iowa family farm. Even my daughter, who was a “city kid,” spent a two months every summer and the month of December on her grandparents’ Iowa farms.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Marlene – yes, a great idea! I consider myself lucky to grow up as a farm kid and want to live in the country now so I can still enjoy things like new chicks!!!!

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Marlene – forgot to say I grew up with a standard collie, too – makes me sad now to think of him laying outside with his matted coat. My folks weren’t really dog lovers and I was just a kid

Great pictures! Love the chickens and the quilts. A book recommendation came over the Internet to me. I’ll pass it on to you. “Go Gentle” by Maria Semple. Might be up your alley. A humorous thriller.

Oh, Boy – I’m new. It’s day two and I love to get acquainted with you all, and the chicks, cats, and dogs! I visited your shop way back in the 1980’s -” Wear Warm Clothes” times, such fun! I see a few posts from AZ and I’m here too, and still quilting. Thanks.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Judy – welcome! We’re a chatty group and it’s so fun to have a little coffee group in the morning or whenever. I try to post every night so feel free to join in the conversation. Wear WRm Clothes was a classic quilt – I hang it every year after Christmas

I had a good laugh at those cats sitting in front of the TV, not only is it hard to watch but changing the channel is tough. The chickens are looking good, and I bet they are loving being able to spend time outside once again. The quilt with those cute bunnies is just adorable and I have so many blues fabrics and now I have seen one that inspires me to cut some rectangles and sew them together. Easy but oh so lovely. We are getting lots of rain here and now we have lots of flooding. The ground is still frozen, so it has nowhere to go. I’m glad our home is up high and so far, our sump pump hasn’t been needed. Daffodils are starting to pop up, spring is coming.

Loved today’s photos: quilts and cats and dogs and chickens – nothing better. My mother raised chickens and my sister and I each had our special hen. Mine was a Plymouth Rock and hers was a Rhode Island Red. We’d go to the chicken yard and cuddle them in our laps. But we never named them.

Jeanine, I’ll pray for your daughter and son-in-law. I’ve walked that path myself, and it’s not easy.

  9. Jeanine from SE iowa

I enjoyed all the pictures today. Some very beautiful quilts. Thanks, ladies, for sending them to Mary.

I just wanted to let you know that right now, our daughter is in surgery in Sioux Falls, SD, having a double mastectomy done. She found out in February she had breast cancer, and when she found out her husband was going through treatment for cancer. It was a double whammy. I know I have many family members and friends from church and beyond praying for her recovery. Any prayers from the blog members here would also be appreciated. We have a strong faith and are trusting God to get them through this huge bump in the road. I will let you know tomorrow how everything went. Thank you all.

We had some rain overnight. Sounds like we could have more later today and maybe Friday with some talk to more severe weather on Friday……just not sure what part of Iowa will get that yet.

I also love the little chicks. Maybe I will have some again someday in the future!

    1. Deb in Idaho

I’m so sorry to hear about your daughter’s breast cancer. Such a terrible cancer. I’ll be praying for her. I’ve had breast cancer twice so I know how hard it can be. There is so much that can be done now for treating cancer of all kinds.

    2. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Prayers for you and your daughter. This blog is filled with prayer warriors. Will continue to pray.

    3. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – oh, I’m so sorry! What a terrible set of circumstances for your daughter and husband. Keep the faith and your blog prayer warriors will join you in hope of a speedy recovery! Please let us all know.

    4. Rita in Iowa

Jeanine so sorry to hear about your daughter’s breast cancer. My daughter at age 40 went through breast cancer two years ago, also a double mastectomy. She is doing well and cancer free. She lives near Dallas, TX so it was very hard to be so far away. Thank heavens she had a network of close friends to keep tabs on her and her family. Will definitely keep her and her husband in my prayers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to help with the stress.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita – I thought about you when Jeanine told us about her daughter – I’m glad you offered support and answers if she had questions.

  10. Suzanne

Oh, that bunny quilt…. so darling! And the Dresden Plate quilt was also very special. I have some DPs in a box with all my mother-in-law’s quilting things that her daughters allowed me to keep after she passed. Been wondering what to do with them. Now I have a little idea brewing! Thanks for all the pictures – today and every day, Mary. PS Love the chicks from yesterday. ~ Suzanne in Michigan

  11. Des

Beautiful quilts today! Rocky is a fine looking rooster. I’ll be anxious to see your pictures of the chicks as they grow and develop their feathers. And who wouldn’t rather watch Mortie & Three instead of what was showing on the TV.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Des – today the chicks are running and flapping their little wings!!!

  12. Jeanie S, Central IL

Glad the chicks are thriving; the dogs find them quite interesting.
    The quilts are beautiful.
Mortie and Three are both beautiful and pretty cute the way they parked themselves in front of the tv.
I hope the Midwest weather is avoiding Garner.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanie – so far we have had no bad weather, knock on wood. We could use more rain and then dry up so we can clean our yards. Yes, I want the dogs to know these chicks as just part of our everyday routine.

  13. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

Great quilt show today! Glad your chicks are doing well. I know what you mean. When we got day old chicks we checked them all the time-I’m sure it was every hour. lol. We have a pregnant mare that is due in about a week so a camera has been set up in the barn so she can be checked on all the time too. When the foal is born I will send you a picture Mary. We are very excited.
Enjoy your new chicks, they are so much fun.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – a colt!!! How exciting! I’d want to witness the birth if at all possible. Yup, first thing I do in the morning is go to the barn in my bathrobe to see the chicks!

      1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

We will be watching the birth for sure. We were able to see the last foal born about 4 years ago, different mare last time. My son had to hep pull out the foal as mom had backed herself into a corner and he couldn’t come out without help. We are so excited.
