Correction, 1-24-25

It’s Patti Leal – TYPO when I typed her address. I try so hard to proofread and I sure missed that one. Patti is our next card recipient. Complete address in 1-22 post.

A reader is in Hawaii and sent these wonderful pictures from the market where she saw fabulous quilts as well as shirts. Her husband owns the vintage shirt.

Isn’t this great fabric?

And this is what I bought at the fabric sale today when fabric was sold as full yards only. The blue and white is a Minnick and Simpson to use on the back of Yes, We Can America and the others are just fill ins.

Weather is much better. Tomorrow I’ll let the chickens out again since this was our most recent snowfall and it’s gone. I love watching the Southerners enjoying their recent snowfall.

My apologies, Patti, for typing your name wrong. Hope everybody takes note.

And Millie is so much better today – calmer and no longer digging at her ears. So glad.

Hello. Love the quilts! I don’t always proofread very good. Like Jamie in Arizona. I’m in a hurry. Ha isn’t everyone!
I’m not sure if I mentioned the kids gave us money to do a meal plan. So we joined Hello Fresh. It has been fun! Jay likes to help cook and chop, etc. I will continue until grilling season, I get so bored with cooking when you cannot grill. If I was single, I think it would be just too much! But, to each his own. I. Thankfully not single and it is fun together.
A sweet little 5 year old in our sister congregation passed away this past Tuesday with flu symptoms. Please pray for his family!
    Have a good Sunday!

Joy – 5 year old died of flu??? Oh, how terrible. I hate cooking, too – Rick is a much better cook than I – last week I asked if he could start doing some baking, too.

I think it’s a fair price for the kits. There are a lot of things that went into the finished product. The design of the quilt, picking appropriate fabric, writing directions, printing the pattern, hiring someone to cut the fabric, not to mention the quilt was probably made numerous times to test the pattern and fabric choices. I’ve only used a kit two times. One time I made the kit exactly as written the other time I used the fabrics included as a starting point and added many more. I considered the kit as a way to get new numerous fabrics at a good price.

Am an 83- yea-r old southern gal and we had a little over 2 inches of snow during the first storm and another inch or two a few days ago. Do not like cold weather but the kids and dogs had a ball in the snow on the bluff behind me the first time, but really did not appear the second time as it was so cold. My hat is off to you hearty Iowans.

The Hawaiian quilts are very unique and pretty. Mary, you’re finished quilt will be a stunner! Which leads me to the Shark Tank quilter. Perhaps he feels a repeated design is boring. Personally, I don’t. I’d rather invest that money on material to make designs that appeal to me. Not that I have any business buying more material!! There is beauty and strength in structure and color choices are unlimited. Wish him the best of success. His artwork might be just the style some people are looking to find. I wish him well.
Like Martha, my endeavors are for the quilts to be used and loved for the comfort they bring.
    Millie is better! 🙂

I love the Hawaiian quilts. I’ve made one and it’s challenging.
As for the Legitkits, if all fabrics and the pattern are included in them, it’s a fair price. Designing and testing and pulling fabrics together all deserve to be paid for just as we deserve to be paid for making a commission quilt. If I want to make one of those quilts I would pay for it.
I did pay that much for a king size quilt kit that I made for my son and his new wife. It was a time saver for me that the pattern and fabrics were all together. And it was a good kit as there was extra fabric built in

The Hawaiian quilts are beautiful. True works of art.
Mary, you certainly found the perfect backing fabric for your latest quilt. When buying fabric for no set project yet, I rarely look at the white and off white fabrics. I love your selection so, will concentrate more on getting some background and basic fabric to add to my stash.

Connie – I just told someone that when you’re shopping for fabric always but a background. We’re all drawn to colorful fabric but for every 3 or 4 colorful fabrics, you should also buy a background for your collection.

      1. Connie R. In Wis

I’m going to remember that formula as I have lots of colors but very few background fabrics. I always admire how your quilts always have subtle variations in the background colors. A good reason for me go to the nearest quilt shop for some new fabric. Thanks for the tip.

Jamie, if I wanted such an artsy detailed quilt I’d buy one. But, I quilt for the utilitarian use of my quilts. The Hawaiian quilts are beautiful. I’m glad Millie is doing better.

Brenda, if you’re looking for a recent post, just before the comments start you’ll find an arrow on the left that gives the previous day’s date and the blog title. Click on that and then scan down that previous blog post to find the next previous date. So on and so forth. Also, you can go by months if you scroll down to the end of the blog page. There it says “Archives.” Below that is a rectangle that you use to find the month you’re looking for. I hope this helps.

Brenda – I’m not sure because I’ve never looked. Someone, maybe you, should do some investigating on your own device. My IPad acts a bit differently than a desktop computer.

    3. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – I found it – on the bottom of the right hand column it says archives and a search box for the month.

I find it easier to proofread a typed paper page in my hand instead something on my phone or iPad. Guess I haven’t quite transitioned to the digital age.

I googled Prosperity Hens and fell in love with them. I bought a really beautiful one on Etsy for only $10.

Did anyone watch Shark Tank tonight? They had a man who loves to quilt but finds it boring (Huh?). He created kits to make it easier, He has 50 designs available but only showed a couple of them. He sells the kits for $399.

I’m curious as to what all of you quilt experts here think about it. Is $399 a fair price? Would you buy one of his kits? Curious minds want to know.

    1. Terri S

I watched that same episode! While his quilts were beautiful and I’m sure a lot of time goes into it coordinating the fabrics. I felt the price was a Little steep. I was actually a little surprised he got a deal. It doesn’t seem like something you go on Shark Tank with.

      1. Jamie in Phoenix

I agree. But there have been several things this season that surprised me. Especially when the sharks were competing for them.
