Duesey Day, named for the Duesenburg Brothers who had a bike shop in Garner way back when, was held today in Garner – a local celebration which is very fun for families, class reunions and vendors. The rest of us like me, are old, and it was very hot! Becky and I had a pork loin sandwich at our church’s booth, talked to a few people and went home. That’s enough for me.
Someone asked about the blocks in the basket.

Here they are – the log cabin blocks I’m working on but need hundreds more.

Yes, we celebrated Betty’s 99th birthday last year and here’s an update from her daughter Donna.
Mom, Betty Lamb, will be 100 in August. This past year has brought many changes in her life. In February she was very ill and we were thinking end of Life Care, but I brought her from Indiana to Kansas City to stay with me and she is back to her normal sharp, witty self, but still needing a little daily attention.

In August, we are going back “home” to pack up her belongings to make the permanent move to my home in Missouri. It will be an emotional month, to be sure, but if her birthday cards are sent now (I get the mail.) I will take them with us and give her a few cards each day and they are sure to bring a smile during this difficult time. She no longer has mail service at her home. I promise to send a photo with Mom and her cards when we return to Independence. I know your cards will brighten her days. Thanks to all of you for your thoughtfulness. My address is.:
Donna Maglinger

Since we have already had a card shower for Betty last year when she turned 99, I would not ask you to send another unless you want to. I don’t mean to burden you with card requests so it’s your decision. Betty’s story of a new life living with her daughter is exciting!
More card chatter:
Lori – got your card today and I let Rick read it so he’ll know you asked about him. Readers, here’s what she said: Can we have more of Rick? haha!!! I’ll leave that up to him.
Someone asked about my wound – well, the Prednisone is keeping it from healing as fast as I’d like. Not only slow healing, I can’t sleep – even with a sleeping pill!
Here we are, Girls!

And I’m going to start a list of Ten Hymns For Older People. This is #10:
10. It is well with my soul but my back aches a lot.
Thank you, Liz!
And now a little snarky remark – I can get snarky after people keep telling me what I should do with this blog. Several years ago I tried PDF patterns, remember? Kayla helped me, we worked hard at it and you know technology doesn’t make any sense to me. When we did get a pattern to post, readers would “buy” it and then send me panicked emails because they couldn’t find it – as if I had kept their money and not sent their pattern. Remember this? So then we had to email back and forth to figure it out. As it turned out, the buyer was responsible for sending their purchased pdf pattern wherever they chose – it had nothing to do with me really.
So…..when people send me an order for a $5 pattern and then suggest I offer PDF patterns I want to scream! It will never happen if I’m the one doing this. It certainly would be cheaper – no copier lease, paper, mailing, etc. but just think about entering all those patterns and drawings – hours upon hours of work. So …. NO! It isn’t even in the realm of possibility.
I do know the majority of you get it but there are still some………

I will absolutely send Betty a card, what a lovely lady! I noticed that Ron still has all of the cards that were sent to him from his card shower. He absolutely loved the card shower. By the way Ron just turned 93 on 7/2! We’ve all had this upper respiratory virus that’s going around. I went to urgent care, his is still hanging on..I told him he would be over it if he’d go to urgent care! My thinking about the patterns is that it’s no big deal to send you $5 & a stamped self addressed envelope, but spending hours listing all those pattern would be torture! I personally would have better things to do with my time! I can manage my phone, tablet, & most of the time my computer. I’m as tech savvy as I want to be, I don’t want to spend all my time on any of them. Too many other things I enjoy doing. There’s light at the end of the tunnel with this plumbing situation. The plumbers found the waterline break & it’s been fixed. Flooring must be fixed next. Note to all of you, Do not waste your money having a leak detection Co to come find a leak on your home. They were a good 6 ft off on this one & I have 2 unnecessary large holes in my flooring to prove it! And a water heater that has been removed twice! Very expensive!!
Alice – your leak problem has been a nightmare for you and I hope you can return to normal now. New flooring and your poor water heater. We all have household maintenance expenses that come up but yours has exceeded a normal case, I’d say. Good heavens! Glad Ron liked getting his cards and yes, if he’s so stubborn he won’t go to the dr, he can just put up with being sick. Haha!
Turning 100 definitely deserves another round of birthday cards! I sent Betty a card last year and am so very happy to send another this year. I hope this time next year, Donna will report that her Mom is turning 101!!
I have enjoyed getting your patterns in the mail! Plz don’t change a thing!
Rita – thanks – rest assured I won’t be changing.
I have a card ready for Betty. Turning 100 is a big deal. My dad sure loved getting your cards when he turned 98 in May. You all are wonderful to send the cards. I’m going to see him this week. He saved all the cards so I could see them. Mary, I loved the card you posted today and the log cabin blocks. Can’t wait to hear the Ten Hymns for Older People too. Love this blog!
Re: your converting patterns to pdf: To quote a past president, better forgotten “Let me just say this about that.” Seemed to fit.
Marlene – haha! Love it!!
Hi Mary-
I just want to say that all you do in a “routine” day at the farm is much more than most people are up to. I for one am grateful for the pattern availability that you ARE offering to all of us. As for you not being good at technology – you far out pace me in what you have learned to keep this blog about nothing going. I think for someone who did not grow up using technology from the get go, you do just fine and it is a lot of work. You keep doing what you do – I look forward to your pics and stories and just general chit chat everyday! Thanks again.
Wendy – thanks but the blog, email and Facebook is just about my limit. Haha! I can’t even imagine growing up with a tablet as a little kid. And I’m not eager to learn more. I would much rather feed my chickens – ha!
I will make sure to send Betty at least a postcard from Greece. If you live to 100, you derserve a big cheer and cards. How nice that her daughter is with her. We left Wisc for Ohare at 6:30am and did a park n ride at a local hotel. Shuttled to the airport, boarded at 4:30pm, flew 10.5 hours into Athens. No sleep for either of us but we watched plenty of movies. Spent the 1st night in Athens, got on our boat the next day at 3:30. We were completly spent by the time our heads hit the pillow. We did wander a few streets in Anthens, love local markets. Plenty of fresh fish for sale, (the smell was NOT pleasent) but i wanted to see octopus for sale. Went into a local spice market and bought some Greek Oregeno (its more earthy than our Italian Oregeno), clove sticks (for making Baklava) and some Mountain Tea ( it has flowers dried on long branches, that you seep). Its great for inflamation and is literally found on Mountain paths. We are settled on the ship, finding our way and our 1st stop is the Island of Santorini (famous for its white buikdings & blue roofs.
Kim – I love this travelogue! It’s the closest I’ll ever get to Greece! Thank you so much. I cannot imagine flying for 10.5 hours
I agree with you Mary. I can hardly do 5 hours to Pittsburgh, PA. I’m leaving Wednesday night to spend 2 weeks with my dad. He’s excited and my daughter is flying in next Tuesday to spend 4 days there with us.
Mary, with all the farm work on your plate it’s up to you to make things easier for you. Some people are too demanding. I was a manger at a fabric store in the 80’s and learned I could never be a store owner. What you have done in your life amazes me. You are so gifted. You do life the way you want now!!
Betty is amazing, too. I wish her the best in moving. I will love to send her a card. What a beautiful woman!!
People….ugh.
Could you tell me when Betty Lamb’s bday is, please. Thanks
Becky – I don’t think she gave me the date – just August.
August 29
Mary, I do get it! Ha ha. Totally understand the frustration. Why repeat the same thing that drove you to frustration. It is what it is!
Oh sending a card to Betty Lamb of course! What a celebration! I wonder if I would look that good in 20 yrs She is an amazing lady and deserves to be celebrated.
I hope to be in the sewing room this afternoon. I have things that need attention this morning. The guy doing the finishing work in the bathroom is painting the bathroom today==He has two days of work in but he is a perfectionist! Don’t know what my bill will be but I will gladly pay it since I did not have to do it (not that I even could–ha ha)..
Tell those who want you to do PDF patterns that they can set them up for you and deal with any problems/people, tech, etc. All for NO PAY of course!😆
Paula – now there’s a great idea!!! Thanks!
I am with you on PDF. I miss newspapers on paper. miss the phone that I only heard when I was in the house. I miss hearing kids playing outside! Apps, passwords, Amazon customer non existent service, the list goes on.
Donna – Ditto – am tied to my phone as well and sometimes simply leave it in the house when I go outside so I don’t have to talk to anybody. I hate passwords more than anything.
I will definitely get a card sent out to Betty to celebrate her 100th. Not a burden at all when you send out a request for cards. It’s gratifying to see how that simple act is so appreciated by the recipient. Betty looks great!
I also prefer getting a paper pattern instead of a pdf. I’m willing to pay the extra to have it sent but, so many are going to all pdf now when you order online.
Thanks for showing the log cabin blocks you’re working on. You always choose the perfect fabrics. They will make a beautiful quilt.
Connie – and pdf patterns are usually $10+ which means your sending in the envelope etc is worth $5 minus your stamp.
I will definitely get a card off to Betty. I’m so thankful to everyone who sent cards to my mother for her 100th birthday. It meant alot to her. She read them over and over. The log cabin blocks look very summery. Oh, Mary, at a thrift store today I saw a really dark silver piece of tableware. I thought of you. I couldn’t find any markings on it (although we were in a hurry and I couldn’t spend too much time inspecting it). It did have several places where it was shiny- kind of like the dark area flaked off. How does a person know if a piece is a quadruple layered piece?
Martha – I’m not sure how to recognize it, I just do. It’s never ever shiny. If ever in doubt it will say quadruple plate on the bottom. Silver plate is my guess on what you looked at. And once again, you’re right about sending a card – so simple yet means to much to the receiver.
Denise:
Betty is eating ground beef tacos with a generous portion of cheese on them at Dixon’s Chili in Independence, Missouri where President Harry Truman also enjoyed dining. She has 3 in her basket & two portions of taco sauce in the cups. They are delicious & all you can eat!
Oh cheese. Now I see it ! Thanks
At 76 I don’t apologize for refusing ANYTHING. I tend to cuss more and my tolerance level is very low. I have no issues with people that have a lack of education some are more street smart than those with PHDs but can’t deal with incompetence. I often want to tell some people not to try for a higher position you are lucky to be employed.
You are doing a great job and I look forward to reading your blog daily. If people want change they can start their own or delete this one. I won’t miss them.
By the way my son calls the farm THE LOONEY FARM. I call it green acres like the tv show.
Angie – yup! This farm is the looney farm – there are days I wonder if I can keep my wits about me – haha! But I wouldn’t change a thing – thanks for being such a faithful reader for so long!
Angie! You might be my twin! I like your spunk. I also love Mary’s blog. I give people the respect they deserve most of the time. Surprisingly, with age, I don’t always express what I am really thing either.
Thinking 🤔
Hi Mary, what is Betty eating out of the taco shell? It’s not familiar to me. Happy birthday to her and best wishes for continued healing, cheers
Denise – Liz answered – I wish I had one right now!
Oh, your log cabin blocks are beautiful! They are so much fun with the fussy cut ones standing out. I am inspired to make some! I will definitely send a card to Betty right away. My birthday is in August also. Betty deserves as many cards as possible. I just love those photos of her. She is lovely! Thanks so much for all you do. I for one like holding patterns in my hand, plus me and computers and I don’t always get along!
Brenda – I want the pattern in front of me, too! You must be old like me 🤣
I am old, but older than you! I will be 86 in August, hopefully!
Brenda – well, if you’re still reading patterns and sewing I’d say you’re doing great!
Seeing that there is to be many more blocks I cannot help but wonder what the layout will be. Sure are pretty.
Li – and because I didn’t use a light and dark side of each block, it will likely be no rhyme or reason – like I do a do a lot of things.
Hi Mary, watching
Little house on the prairie on Netflix, setin independence, Kansas, enjoying it ,but the dog looks like an Australian cattle dog! Chilly day,but sunny. Same tonight, but l am cosy with double glazed windows! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
