Fabulous Friday, 8-11-23

We celebrated Becky’s 70th birthday last night at Thursday on Main and we ran into little Libby again who squirmed so much I couldn’t get a nice picture. Deb, I told Libby’s mom about Augie!

Our cousin Jill is home from California – you might remember her as the recipient of the red and white quilt called Farmer’s Daughter a few years ago. Friends in the restaurant sang Happy Birthday and the waitress joined in.

Jenny, Me, Becky, Jill and Joy

The band was terrible – jazz. Tell me who in this crowd wants to listen to jazz? Nobody – everybody left early. Where are the Kraft Brothers when you want a nice evening of tunes???? There’s one Thursday left and if I remember correctly we like the band named Bear Creek.

Thank you for all the compliments on my pink quilt – it was very fun to make – no expectations, just relaxed sewing of leftover pieces. Save all your orphan blocks and leftover borders. Sew something and then send me a picture.

Yesterday Mr. Schroeders picture didn’t post so here he is!

Today is lawn mowing day but I’m just not sure I should mow my dry grass. No rain in sight and I don’t want to kill my grass. Summer life is at a standstill right now – everybody going on vacation before school starts and just preparing for harvest. Many are going to the State Fair but it’s just so much hassle for me to go although I’d love to see the quilts. I’m going somewhere tomorrow and I really don’t like going. I’m happy to be at home with my dogs.

Later today I’ll post that list of books. It will take me awhile to copy them. Also – someone asked for a favorite recipe and this is what I always make when I have fresh tomatoes.

This is Ina’s recipe found in the Goat Gazette cookbook

Love the photos of the Girls’ Night Out! Christie, that Halloween quilt is darling! And, Mary, you definitely need a Porsche like that, but in RED!

  2. Beamer's Mom

Mary, I instantly thought of what that Porsche would quickly look like with 3 muddy dogs come Spring.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Beamer’s mom – haha! Yes! And they’d all want to ride at once! Isn’t that the cutest little vehicle? Don’t know if it’s a car or a golf cart?

  3. Brenda

I love Gracie and Greta. It is so sweet to see them eating together! I am looking forward to the list of books.

  4. Karen Pidcock

Patti – I’ll bet you’re right because someone drove their Porsche uptown for the evening entertainment. I can’t imagine what it cost. I think I’ll look it up – now I’m curious.

  6. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, all the pictures are great but Nellie and her chickens is OUTSTANDING!!!🌞

Love the blue and white quilt! Two of my favorite things for a quilt, sawtooth stars and blue.
    Ve Roy nice work

Hi Mary! I’ve been reading your blog since a friend and I were at your’s and Connies’s last sale. We weren’t able to visit with you but did chat with Connie. I love the blog and many times I’m ;iving vicariously through
    you! Keep it coming!!

Please tell me what Thursdays on Main is. Sounds so fun and I’d love to make it down for what I think you said is the last one. Would love to hear from you!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – the crowd was not there last night and I suppose that many of the seasonal lake people have gone home. Some of the vendors weren’t there either. It’s lots of food vendors, arts and craft vendors, entertainment at the park and bandshell, car show, and at 7-9 there’s a live band downtown. We take our lawn chairs and grab a beer and enjoy – except for last night when we all hated the jazz band. Give us some country music or ‘50’s/‘60’s. Many people bring their dogs which I think is a mistake.

  9. Carrolyn Vidal

Fun pix and great quilts! My opinion on jazz is that those who like to play it are the only ones who enjoy listening to it!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carrolyn – you got that right – only person enjoying jazz was the guitarist playing it. People left – us included.

  10. Linda In UK

Oh I like jazz, a shame you didn’t enjoy your evening. Not sure who Nellie is but she looked a happy girl. Nellie was my Mum’s name. Hope your little Nellie loves her name more than my Mum did!

  11. Chris

I usually stop what I’m doing and read your post as soon as I see it, Mary. You are my favorite!

Thank you for posting my granddaughter quilt, and I love the Linda Brannock quilt you made and she would love it too..the way you just whip up a quilt is so amazing.. I sure hope you get rain soon, we too are lacking in it..
thank you for inspiring us all..

The sweet picture of Nellie and chickens is just over the moon, so cute. Love the blog about nothing & everything. We are hoping for some rain tonight, the gardens need it.

  14. Mrs. Goodneedle

Augie’s double!! I love this. ❤️ A Porsche?!! That precious little girl and her chickens are just priceless. The only thing I’m hearing regarding the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is about the politicians that are planning on stumping there. No thanks!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Mrs. Goodneedle – I have no desire to listen to any of them! Aren’t we all glad we never discuss politics? Yes, Libby could be Augie’s little sister. We will miss seeing her every week.

  15. Lois Ann Johnson

I love your blog, Mary! I enjoy hearing from all of the other ladies who also read the blog. Your recipe for the Corn Bread Salad is much like the one I’ve made for years. I first tasted it at a deli in Clear Lake. Can’t remember the name of the place, but it was several years ago. It is one of my favorite recipes to make for a potluck. Our area (north central Iowa) had some nice rain again last night. I slept through the storm, but I am told it was a noisy one. Bailey, of course, was ‘in t he closet’!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lois – and now I know why Hazel was laying around my head – I did not hear it thundering but obviously she did. We got .4 rain. That deli has not let anyone eat inside since Covid – stupid.

  16. Kathy in western NY

Well as soon as I win the lottery, I will buy a Porsche for both of us!

      1. Kathy in Western NY

I better hold up my end of the bargain then and start playing mega Millions as I only buy scratch offs as card tuck ins!! I do occasionally like to buy the crossword ones for myself to challenge my brain and hope I win but the most has been $20 on a $2 card. Twenty dollars might afford us some gas for the Porsche to use in our yards.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – we’d have to keep our old faithfuls for the messy jobs!

  17. Susan

Thanks for the recipe, instead of a blog about nothing I would call it the blog about everything.
I really enjoy everything you write about.

  18. Vicki Ibarra

A cat question: Do Gracie and Greta ever overeat their dry cat food? When we had a cat, we used to be able to put a bowl of dry cat food on the floor for her and she would only eat when she was hungry. My youngest son has cats and they OVEREAT! A bowl of food left is eaten until it is licked clean.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – no, they do not overeat – food is left for them 24/7. What does the vet say about your grand cats?

  19. Diane in Maryland

Happy Birthday Becky! You all look fabulous!
The Porsche is cute but I really do like Little Red more!
Nellie is adorable with her chickens! All the pictures are wonderful! Thank you, Mary.

Linda – keeping you all entertained is my calling! Hahaha!!!!

  22. Denise

The picture of Gracie and Greta made my day. So glad to see them happy together. Also loved the picture of Nellie and her chickens. That grin on her face is so cute. Love reading your blog.

Other than the jazz it sounds like a good evening celebrating Becky’s birthday. That Porsche looks like a fun vehicle to drive. The kitties look like they’re getting along and enjoying the all-day food service. I really like the applique quilt with the ladies on it. I like the Halloween quilt and blue and white quilts too. Nellie and her chickens are just precious.
My son and his fiancé want a blue quilt for their wedding. I found a picture of a quilt online and asked if it was the color they wanted. She fell in love with the pattern so now I’m on the hunt for the pattern and fabric as it was a BOM from 2019. It’s a large one too which is good as they want a king size quilt. I’ve got til next July to get it done but better get started on it soon.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – just tell the bride you can’t find the pattern!!!!

      1. Susan K in Texas

Mary I found the pattern and actually found one kit also. I think I’ll get the pattern and choose my own fabrics to make sure I can get enough extra fabric just in case. I’ll send you a picture of the quilt.
