Friday Night, 10-13-23

Happy Friday the 13th! And how did it get to be Friday already? We had another rainy windy day today – lousy weather but the farmers are getting a break.

I bought this “cat condo” from an online ad which came in about 100 pieces from China – Rick earned a gold star in his crown for putting it together. What a nightmare – I promised I’d never order something like this again just like I had to promise years ago that I’d never ever buy anything from IKEA again.

It was worth it!!!!

HOW Adorable!! Yes, it was worth it. She will be entertained and so will you. She seems to already know it’s hers. I can’t remember the other kitty’s name. Was she too shy to play on it? She will get over it, I bet. Tell Rick Good For Him to put it together.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – Gracie is the other kitty and is simply too shy to come in the house. In fact once again I don’t know where she is – when the weather is nice I leave the door ajar and they play outside. This time she didn’t come back. I’m worried sick but will try not to panic.

That was worth it!! I love your kitties…wish I could have a Gracie but am allergic to them. They will be entertained for hours!! Rick, you are pretty special to do that…lots of Thanks for doing it!!

I am ready for some sunshine now, we had rain all last night and a good share of the day too. I need t get the rest of my flowers cleaned up, the frost a couple of nights ago finished them off. Maybe tomorrow.

    Thanks for sharing again, Mary!!

Beryl – I will show Rick your comment – I know he just groaned when he saw the box!

Happy cats! That should lessen the sting of going through the assembly process, just watching their fun with their new equipment! We had the same problem today. Ordered an industrial looking small table (12″ x 15″ x 29.5″ tall) which arrived; you’d think it would be EASY to assemble, huh? It took both of us quite a while to put it together as the holes were so small we really struggled not to cross thread anything and still get those bolts through. Finally got it together & it looks great but still…. Love IKEA because of all my Billy cabinets but I won’t buy anymore there — their hardware is very cheap now. So our older Billy cabinets will have to last till I use up the quilt fabric (I’ve been told I’ll never see that day — too much fabric). I miss the old days in SO many ways…

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Deb E – I love IKEA furniture but it’s just pressed wood and not easy to assemble. I haven’t been in the store in Mpls for many years – I would be too tempted.

Hi Mary, l hope Gracie is back home by now and enjoying the cat condo! We have had a couple of windy, rainy days too. New Zealand elections today, fortunately we voted early in the week, but l think we will get a change of government. I finished and washed a special baby quilt today, will send photo soon. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Rick earned a lot of brownie points, with you and the cats! They look like that love it.

  6. Rita in Iowa

Rick did a good job on the cat condo. HEY! How is his hip recovery going? It was certainly a gloomy day with the wind and the rain but was definitely needed so won’t complain. No sewing on this end but hope to get some in next week, also need to get things buttoned up outside. Not much to do but time consuming. Have a great weekend everyone.

Will be attending nephews wedding this evening. Finished a quilt to give them.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita – Rick’s hip pain is gone but his back is really crooked which means he still has pain elsewhere. How are you? Hope you get all the outside chores done – I hate how lonely it looks outside now. Don’t over do.

I have two cat condos, I call them kitty towers for some reason. I got one from Amazon when I first rescued Bette and Olivia and they loved it, Bette slept in one side of the highest towers and Liv slept in the basket at the same level. Bette got big and was hanging over the side of her tower so I found one just as tall with bigger basket like platforms. I intended to get rid of the older one but they liked both so now they are side by side in my dining room window! I did move one to my bedroom and put the original one out on the porch when my cousins were here because I didn’t was them to eat with cat towers at their shoulders!

I hope Gracie is home by now, I know how disturbing it is when one of your babies is out of site. I have to walk to some neighbors because I found a beautiful declawed cat in one of our tall grasses. I have had her for a few days but it’s been raining and I have been working so I’ve waited until good weather to see if anyone is missing a beautiful long haired kitty. I am calling her Rita for Rita Hayworth because she is orange gray and white. Of course I am hoping someone dumped her off and she will be mine. We are 1/4 mile off the road and strays don’t come back to our house which leads me to believe she was dropped off. Bette is having a royal fit but if Rita stays she will get used to her.

    1. Kathy in western NY

Linda, bless you heart for helping the poor kitty who doesn’t understand why she was dropped off somewhere unfamiliar to her, if that is the case. My vet said when I brought in our cat who walked into our house one cold night, that a cat finds you. I’ve always felt that way when I hear cat stories. Keep us posted as it sounds like she is a beauty. And I had to chuckle over your cat towers and moving them when your cousins visited. It’s funny how our pets take over our houses but at this stage of my life, I find it rewarding to give them good days.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – I understand! FluffyBin bullies Gracie so right now she’s locked in the garage. I can’t let her keep scaring Gracie so what to do? FB is gorgeous and would be a perfect companion as an only cat.I don’t know what to do!!! But I can’t live with this anxiety.

  8. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

Oh, Mary! What a great kitty condo of fun! Gracie would be home in a hurry if she knew it was waiting on her. Greta is having a great time 😻. Cudos to Rick for getting it together 🥰 just back from a 3day retreat with sewing group. Had a great time. Sister and her husband are coming in from upper Michigan tomorrow night so busy cleaning and getting ready. Then we follow them to Knoxville and then up to Michigan for the first time. Hopefully get to Mackinac Island, only an hour away. Daughter will be coming over to care for Penny and Lucy, it will be hard missing them!

Cats have their own schedule. Our son’s family had a 22+ year old house cat. One day someone opened the door and cat bolted and ran. They looked for days and finally had to tell the kids the cat probably went to cat heaven. A few days later, he opened the door and cat walked in like nothing had happened nor an explanation. Cat lived to about 27 or so. Go figure.

  10. Gloria from CC

What an adorable cat condo and the cats already love it. Thanks Rick for putting it together! Everyone have a great weekend.

  11. Bobby Sutton

Is that Greta playing in the condo? How cute. Yep, definitely worth the fuss putting it together. How lucky you are to have a “Mr. Fixit” around to help. I want one for my cat now! I think I’ll take your advice and buy one already put together !

Gracie’s probably hunkered down someplace because of the wind & rain! I’m sure she’ll show up soon! Wonderful job on the cat condo, Rick! One kittie is sure enjoying it!! Yesterday was spent cutting back my huge patio tomato plants & potted flowers. My friend across the street came over & put all the trimmings in a garbage bag. So nice to have everything done! Still have two huge geraniums that continue to bloom. Earlier yesterday I helped my friend clean out the salt bin for his water softener. A job he had been putting off for months! It makes quick work of things when you have someone to help! We both feel so much better having our fall cleanups done! Now I’m preparing projects to take on a quilting retreat to north central OH with 12-15 other gals. We’ve been doing this retreat for 20+ yrs! Such a fun time!

  13. Sandy D’Angelo

My cat has two tall ones and loves them both. She sits by the window and watches the bunnies that live in the ravine. My neighbors feed them carrots every night and they are quite tame and even feed on the sweet grass by Amelia’s window not two feet away from her. She loves them.

  14. Lynette in Orlando

I bought one of those cat condos years ago but fortunately it was already assembled! Mine is tall and I got it so Miss Kitty could lay and look out the window…… I will echo — well worth it. She’s there 80% of her day and sleeps in it. Hope everyone has a great day!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – I have a tall one, too, that came assembled – it came from Fleet Farm and I’m going to buy another one for the shop.

  15. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

Hey, Mary, you bought a cat condo? We adopted a cat! She’s a black declaw, named Scarlett, we picked her/she picked us yesterday, Friday the 13th!
It took a year and a very big heart scare for my husband to say, “I think my heart needs a kitty.” So now we are complete.
She has a little cold, needs the vet as soon as we get home. I hope she has no other issues.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – oh, that’s such happy news this morning!!! When we watch little Greta playing on her new cat condo we realize how much we would have missed if we didn’t have her. I can’t to hear an update after your new kitty settles in! I bet your husband will feel better now!

      1. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

More likely, we need to settle in around her kitty ways. They have a way of running a household! I’ll send Mary a photo when she’s home and comfy. She seems to like to hide. My son and daughter in law visited her twice and had to play hide and seek to find her.

      1. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

We went to Columbus Ohio for the weekend to visit our son and daughter in law. She sent us a photo of Scarlett Thursday, I filled out the adoption papers, we drove to Columbus yesterday and went straight to the shelter and checked her out. I was able to cuddle her to sleep. Well, she’s got a cold so perhaps it wasn’t Cat Mama magic but it was sweet. They are getting her boosters caught up today, we pick her up tomorrow and drive back to Buffalo NY tomorrow.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – oh, what fun you will have with Scarlett when you get her home! Just watching them explore is entertaining – be sure to send a picture!

  16. Angie from Baltimore

Rick’s hard work looks much appreciated. I bought one that was supposed to be “easy to assemble “
For whom? Not me and the cat must have looked at it for days before she tried it out then she decided it was fabulous.
So glad your kiddies appear to
    Love it right away

  17. Kate Schloemer

I love that the kitty loves it!!! So it was worth all the work Rick had to do. I lost my husband 9 years ago so I have know one telling me I can’t buy things but I also am the one to put things together. lol
Lots of rain here in Minnesota. Close to 5” yesterday when I looked and still raining off and on.

  18. Diane Deibler

Glad he is able to be up and around. I bought a new grill a couple of weeks ago and it gave Bob something to do for a week! Makes them feel useful. He is doing much better.

  19. Launa

    Mary,
Looks like the cat tree is already a popular, comfy place! Good choice!
37o up here in Idaho….9:30 am….overcast….lots of college games today!

It has rained for 2 days here in Wisconsin and this morning its windy and the leaves are falling, but the sun is out. We spent yesterday shopping for winter boots and cold weather coats, hats & gloves. Decided to shop at the mans mall for the hubby (Fleet Farm) and he got everything he needed and on sale. I’m still looking for good warm boots. We spent the last 10 years in TN and cold gear wasn’t necessary. We had lunch at a great place called the Wooden Chair and hit the library to see about some books for the week end read.

  21. Joy in NW Iowa

Jay checked the gauge this morning and there’s 1inch 5.5tenths. Still dark and dreary! They fixed the combine so when it dries up, they will be ready to go.
I am sure Gracie is hunkered down somewhere and will be back! Greta is loving her new tree! That is so cool! Maybe I should get come for the shed where the kitties stay. Haahaa

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – your kitties would love it! And you could throw a blanket over it to keep some of the cold air out. My mama kitty in the barn has a plush bed and her own heat lamp.

  22. Connie Tesene

    Yea Rick!!!
Oh Rickie you’re so fine- you’re so fine you blow my mind… hey Rickie, hey Rickie.
Glad to see you up and about Rick. Next stop IKEA!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Connie – haha! Roy is more forgiving than Rick – just think of how many IKEA projects he has assembled!!

  23. Carolyn Barnett

That’s not a cat condo, it’s a cat castle!! What happy kitties they must be… And another thing… I DREAM of a Rick at my house! I have been married for 45 years and my husband botches up every assembly piece of furniture or repair in the house! You would think he was a girl! I thought the art of assembing was on the Y chromosome!! No such luck!

  24. Diana Stanfill

The pictures cannot compare to the cost or time and labor to put it together!

    That is one happy cat!!

I love cats, but my lungs dont. My asthma doesn’t take a day off!

  25. Rose Mikulski

Rick can now be a Condo Star as well as a Corn Star (big wink here). Prayers and fingers crossed for Gracie to come home soon to enjoy the cat condo.

  26. bobbie rumler

Yes, it was and the kitty is adorable on it…..I bet you enjoyed watching kitty play thanks for the sweet smile I have right now….

  27. Jeanie S, Central Illinois

Love the cat condo, as does Greta. So sorry Gracie and FB are causing you stress. I hope Gracie shows up soon.
    Take Care, 🥰

  28. Peggy S

Oh, my. What fun your kitties will have with their new tower!!
Saw a FB post one time of an IKEA log cabin for sale. When you got to the picture, it was a trailer load full of logs!! 😂

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Peggy – that sounds about right! But I would love to go to IKEA again – I’ll bet I can find all sorts of things that don’t need to be assembled. Their largest stainless steel bowl is one of my favorite shower gifts to give!

  29. Betty Klosterman

I firmly believe that God gave me my cat. I had no choice. And don’t forget, Gracie survived before she came to your house. Maybe she has another family she visits? Rick, you did good on putting the “jungle” together. The cats are completely happy with it. Cats make do with whatever they have and have a lot of fun besides.
Even better, Rick had the table to put the jungle together. He didn’t have to bend over on the floor. And even if the table didn’t go to together right, the cats would love it anyway.
Glad you moved the two cereius cactus inside for the winter. They are worth saving.
No, Frank and I were never sports fans. We always liked movies and a bunch of the old TV programs.
Starting 1AM Thursday thru 5 PM, we got 2 3/4″ rain, which promptly ran into the south sump pump. I was going to call the roofer and ask when they planned on coming to my house. Good idea, but the phone was OUT for the 4th time since Labor Day! I think they might have figured out the problem, but time and rain storms will tell.
You’ll be able to sit on/in a chair in my living room again. My 2 nieces will be coming Oct. 26. BUT I can’t find where I moved a pattern that was on a chair ……… It will show up?
Take care, everybody. There is a lot of good out there, but you can’t tell by the news.
    Betty in Rapid City

  30. Kathy Hanson

Look how happy the kitties are! Thanks to Rick! those things are a pain to put together but when you see how happy the cats are I hope he feels ok with doing it ! Good work Rick!!

  31. Kathy Duval

It was worth the effort to get it together and see the enjoyment of Greta playing on it. Good job!!!
