Sam to the rescue! I have wanted to juggle some furniture for some time now and Sam came to help – I couldn’t have done this without her!
This couch was “free on the curb” many years ago and I am just plain sick of it. Look where we moved it to – the barn!!!

This fabulous old table was blocking a path thru to my laundry room – because I had no place else to put it. So it’s here for now.

We were going to move this but then I remembered Rick screwed it all together instead of leaving it in two pieces – too heavy for us to get it up the steps.
This chimney cupboard has lived in a corner of the piano room for years and years and it’s one of my favorite pieces and I wanted to see it ….so it moved to my sewing room.

This table and divider are in this spot temporarily.

There are three more major pieces in the shop that have to go. And more for me to cull.
That leads to this – next May when Garner has their city wide garage sales I’m going to haul all of this to town and join Sam in her garage! So if you’re within driving distance keep this in mind – it’s time to downsize. Come to Garner and shop!! I’ve rarely gotten rid of things because every time I do I want it some time down the line. I wish I had such and such to put here, etc. and I have places to store things – so I do. But …. it’s time to get rid of some stuff. I’m too old to keep it all. It needs to come and live at your house.

Too many things to do tonight – choir practice, World Series, ISU basketball – go Yankees!

P.S.
Congratulations to the Dodgers! I was sorry they had to win it all AT New York.

How nice of Sam to help with the furniture moving; it can help one feel so much better about our surroundings. You have wonderful wood pieces, Mary.
The dog quilt is so lifelike and just amazing!
That rolling pin with the red handles is so cute. My mom’s rolling pin had green handles at one time, but I only knew it with one handle. 😳 My sister has it in her kitchen, which is great. We made lots of cutout cookies with it. I have Mom’s sugar scoop, which has a red Bakelite handle; it’s cute, too.
Thanks, Mary 🥰
Loved all the beautiful quilts– the dog collage quilt is amazing!! Also loved the picture of the rolling pin, I have one exactly like that I inherited from my Mother-in-law. I’m not sure when she got it. Had a rainy Halloween here, but it didn’t stop the kids from trick-or-treating! So much fun to see all the cute costumes!
what a lovely selection of quilts today. thanks everyone. i had to do a double-take with the child and bucket at the door for halloween. great job, barbara. had me fooled.
mary, all that furniture moving must have been tiring. i’m sure hazel wasn’t the only one feeling it. but those chickens are going to feel so good having that sofa there. i agree with all the wooden furniture. i just love it. had never heard of ‘howard’s feed and wax’. will have to send mr. ed on an excursion. i’m sure my old ‘hoosier’ cabinet could benefit.
i’ve been feeling a bit down – just not my usual self – no energy. did manage today to build the back to the ‘going places’ quilt so i can take to angels tomorrow. i will also give them the four pillowcases. i’m hoping i have the energy to make it there. may have to use my transport chair. it is my social time so i really don’t want to miss it,
got a new book in the mail yesterday – kim diehl’s new whatnots book. really like it. the largest quilt is 25″ square, i think. easy for me to do but they are just such small pieces. which i normally like. doesn’t use up fabric though. i tend to make these type quilts for myself or gifts to famiy or friends. bonnie hunter came out today with her winter mystery intro. i always follow but don’t always follow through.
am trying to have the energy to do some downsizing in my fabric stash. following a conversation on whether we use yardage or scraps. i tend to use scraps up to half yard pieces. but have tons of pieces that are major yardage. want some to use for backings but know that i won’t finish 100 quilts in the next two years. plus as i am reminded, they do make more fabric. right now i’m using my fabric money to pay for house cleaning.
still being still. no energy. so nothing else will get done today. hugs to all, patti in florida
Patti, Hope you’re feeling better after resting. Your quilts can wait until tomorrow. Take care.
Gettng back to the topic of Mary Ellen Hopkins. You mentioned that your favorite saying of hers is ” every quilt has to have a piece of ugly fabric and if you still don’t like it you haven’t cut it small enough. So true. My favorite “every red goes together” echoes every time I look at an Amish reproduction that I have just emailed you an image along with the log cabin I made. When I showed it to Mary Ellen at a lecture some years later, the shocked look on her face followed with the comment that the logs were supposed to be 3/4″ finished, not 1″. There was no pattern so at the time I wasn’t aware. I liked this crazy quilt so much I hand quilted it with a nice woven on the back. Still one of my favorites. It shouts “not so pretty fabrics”.
Your chimney cupboard is beautiful. I can see why it is one of your favorite pieces. I’m glad it’s not painted and has the original wood finish. What treasure now to enjoy in your sewing room.
Another day of beautiful quilts and pictures. I love that little ghost by the front door. I’ll have to remember that for next year. The dog collage is awesome. I wouldn’t know where to begin on something like that. Mary, I’m sure your chickens will love their new couch.
It is so nice Sam (and Finn) helped you move everything. That last photo looks like Hazel did most of the work and was worn out–lol. There are again so many lovely quilts. I am still working on Honor Flight quilts–bindings, labels, kits etc. Next is a baby quilt for my hairdresser. We have Trick or Treat tonight and it is SOOOO WINDY. I had to move some of my decorations back from the edge of the porch. It might rain before it is over–ugh. I still love it:) The little dog collage quilt looks identical to the little dog. It is so stunning. Cleaning out–or Swedish death cleaning. I am doing it bit by bit. Our garage now has 9 boxes full of lots of fabric, notions, and stuff. Mostly all mine. “Someone” is not interested in cleaning out. It is a lot of work, but I feel rejuvenated every time I fill another box.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone. This is also the neighbor dog’s birthday. Her name is Sunny and she is a 1 year old beautiful Collie. She brought most of the neighborhood cupcakes yesterday. She is a sweet girl.
Diane – love to hear about Sunny!!
Isn’t it great to have help, it keeps you motivated. I know you gals could unscrew that top piece from that buffet, use your power drill.
Lori – yup, we sorta ran out of time.
So glad that couch got a “home” about the downsizing. …..
I have some health issues and thought 🤔 might have to move and began going thru my stuff and it was so freeing to let go of stuff and getting rid of stuff ! I can’t do dusting as much as I have in the past and realized (on the other side of the purge) how great it was not have to deal with all that! Yes, it was hard and yes, I wish my house looked like it did BUT it has been so helpful and I’m glad I did it! Kudos to you for beginning!
Beautiful quilt on the porch, Barbara. I thought that was a grandchild at first and then figured out its a doll.
Collage quilt of the dog is awesome. What a talent.
Getting things moved with help from Sam is a good idea. Makes your house feel like new, I bet.I
Sunny and warmish today. Rain not expected until the trick or treaters show up. I hope it holds off till after 8.
Watched the Dodgers win last night. I just like to see everyone play hard. Freddie Freeman is awesome. Haven’t watched baseball all year, but it was fun to catch the World Series.
Carolyn – like you I only watch baseball when the fall series comes around. Wouldn’t you know I missed that exciting first inning because I was still at choir.
Carolyn, the little ghost was made with 2 noodles from the $ Tree Store. I picked up the sneakers, a white sheet , & toddles jeans at the Thrift store. Spent less than $5 for everything . People keep asking me if it’s my grandson Wilder !!! Hahaha.
The Aussie picture, oh my so beautiful!!
Your chickens will think they have been upgraded to a suite😂😂.
The seat belt thing is so funny, I’m still chuckling. Have to share with Jay!
BIG NEWS: it rained! Not sure how much but it is wet!
Had the nail removed from my big toe yesterday….now I have to soak it every day. This is the third time. Hope the third time is the fix!
Take care!
Joy – WHY? What happened to your toe? Oh, it sounds painful and a nuisance to soak. Three times?
How nice to have help moving furniture around, makes your space feel new again. You have some great pieces, and that corner cupboard is amazing. I’m hunting some skinny tall end tables for our guest room, and I know they are hard to find but I will find them. Hope all the kids have fun trick or treating tonight, the weather is going to be cold and rainy.
Congratulations to anyone who can take on the challenge of downsizing. Mary, you will feel so much better getting rid of stuff you don’t really love and being able to highlight your favorite pieces. Personally, I don’t like too much clutter but find myself holding on to stuff that should go elsewhere. Oh well! Minnesota is finally starting to turn cool but the great thing is the rain which we so much need. It’s supposed be done by the time the little ones go trick-or-treating.
The colorful quilt you see on my front steps in the pictures is one that was sent for or NC Mountain give away. I bought a handmade quilt rack to place it on but I didn’t place the quilt on it very well so you can see it!! I left it in it’s natural state so it can be painted or stained at a later date. I plan to put both in Earthfare about 2 weeks prior to our event to advertise it. I’ll put raffle tickets with it and we’ll raffle the set at the end of the event. The quilt is one of the larger ones sent and is colorful, beautiful, and extremely well made so It represents our hope for Asheville ‘s recovery. Thank you to our member who sent it in for our giveaway.
The collage quilt was so Awesome, such talent!
I have gone to watch my grandchildren’s baseball games and now Lacrosse but we never watch sports on TV.
Good thing I don’t live close as I love anything wood especially something old and to bring out the beauty of the wood especially wooden bowls I use Howards Feed n Wax, my friend and I were at an antique shop one day and the owner shared that tip with us, we now use it on everything, it’s that good!
Those chickens or any other critter are going to love that couch, what fun to put it in the barn!
Carmen – I also use Howard’s – it’s the best!
Wow the college dog quilt is fabulous!!! At first I thought it was punch needle. I am in awe of anyone who can do that. I’ve made two small collage quilts but they don’t compare to the dog.
I can’t get one more thing in my house. If it makes me smile, then it stays. 😊. So I’m smiling everywhere I go.
I can honestly say that in my 75 years, I have never watched a baseball game. Hard to believe isn’t it?
Gloria – and I won’t get rid of the things I still love – I don’t want to live in a bare house! I would be so depressed!! I only watch big contests it seems so I’m not a baseball fan until the fall playoffs and World Series. Now that it’s over what will I watch??
Hi Mary, poor Hazel looks worn out after moving all that furniture! The neighborhood kids have had a lot of fun trick or treating at houses decorated for Halloween. Bella enjoyed meeting all the children, and behaved well. It’s a big job downsizing , like eating an elephant, one mouthful at a time! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – eating an elephant! I love it!!!
My sister loves the Dodgers. I’m very happy for her.
I’m glad you have help moving things around the house. It makes a world of difference.
How did the interview for a new cleaning lady go? Mine is a wonderful gift to myself.
We got a itty-bitty amount of snow. Just enough to wet the grass and Loretta’s feet.
Not much to report today.
Jo – my new cleaning lady will start next week. Rearranging makes me love my house again
I stayed up to watch the game too. It was a great game. I’m happy for the Dodgers. My husband wanted the Yankees to win. I love the medallion quilts. A great way to use up some stash. I have my Mom’s rolling pin which is just like the one you pictured. I would say it was about the same age. She and dad were married in 1941. Lots of pie crusts were rolled out with it.. I need to start purging too, Mary. i’m just not motivated and yet I don’t want to have my kids have to deal with everything..
