Hazel’s Late Night Adventure, 10-1-24

Bedtime last night and no Hazel or Keeper so I go out and call. Keeper, being the sweet boy that he is, came running but no Hazel, of course. I wait another 10 minutes and go out and call again – I hear a faint Hazel bark way out in the grove.

By now it’s nearly 11:15. Oh, good, here she comes tearing into the house because she knows it’s treat time. She grabs the treat and is out the dog door before I could holler stop. So by now it’s past 11:30 and I want to go to bed so I call again and yes, here she comes with dirty mouth and feet so I get the washrag and she runs away from me upstairs. Ok, fine, I’ll go up to bed. Before I could get my pills taken she runs down the steps again and out the door. This time I go out with the flashlight and follow her. Good grief, she’s right behind the shop building in the base of a hollow tree trunk – inside of it barking and I’m sure I can see other gray fur in there, too. I think it’s a possum. I step back and call her again and again, getting more desperate each time. I turn around and there she is! What? I’m standing by the hole – where did she come from? How did she get out of the tree trunk? With my flashlight I look around. Oh, yes, now I see there’s another hole in the opposite side. Oh my. This time I praised her to get her to come with me to the house. As soon as we get inside the house I close the dog door …. and go for the washrag again.

Hole doesn’t look all that big, does it?
Opposite side

Good grief! I am too old for this – I didn’t get to sleep till after 3 and didn’t sleep well at that! I was too mad at her … yet there she was at the foot of my bed sleeping like an angel.

Today I closed the dog door with Hazel outside so she didn’t sleep the day away and then come alive at 10. Somehow I did not raise her right.

And here’s my rant for the day. I went to the store for spray starch. Enough rows of bleach on the shelves to supply all of North Iowa – rows and rows – but no spray starch!

Such a great example of color value and placement – same pattern but two completely different looking quilts! Well done!!!

On the longarm today
Pencils

A recent finish compliments of a friend who loaned me her pattern. I wish I had been able to make this for Becky when she was teaching. I have to say I found this very challenging – so many long strips each one a tiny bit different size.

And the last unbelievable photo from Florida – so sad.

One game down, another one starting.

Oh that Hazel and her late night adventures. I had to look really hard to see that the two quilts were the same pattern. I hope you’ll post a picture of the quilt on the longarm after its quilted. Hope you get a good night’s sleep tonight.

Hi Bloggers, I just read this in the Columbus Dispatch and thought I’d send it along. It said people are receiving packages on their porches that look like Amazon or other mail order companies, but they have not ordered anything. The packages do not have return addresses or any identifying info. The info on the package says to scan the QR code to see who sent the package. DO NOT do that. Once the QR code is scanned the sender has all the info from your phone as in medical info, financial info, etc.
Mary, there is a new article on Caitlyn in the paper. Would you like me to send it?

    1. Renae

      Diane-
Thanks so much for the info!
I took a screenshot of your post and sent it in a text to family and friends. Sure wish people would stop doing mean things like this.

Diane – would it be too much trouble to mail the Caitlyn article? I’d love to read it.

      1. Diane and the gang

You’re welcome Renae. I sent to my family, too. We have 4 grands—20,20,22,23. Just wanted them to know!
Mary, No problem at all. It will be in the mail tomorrow😀

Hazel you’re a stinker!! 😡 You behave better or the treat jar may be empty 🤣 love hearing about her escapades but not when she causes you Kate ight distress!

The color placement of Marie C’s quilts is amazing 🤩

    Hope you recouped today!

Hazel is a character! Love to hear what all she gets into, but I would be frustrated at night if I couldn’t get to bed!! We live an hour southeast of Nashville, and got nearly 5″ of rain over 3 -4 days, but no wind or other bad weather. Can’t imagine what others are going thru. So devastating.

  5. Joy in NW Iowa

Mary, that Hazel keeps you young! What a stinker! I’m just happy Hazel didn’t get tangled with a skunk!
It looks like it will be a beautiful day! A day quite like the day we got married 54 years ago. Warm and windy! Of course, we made a lot of farmers mad getting married during harvest! But, we weren’t farmers then and had no idea we would be in a couple years.
The quilts are pretty but I sure didn’t realize they were the same pattern!
Have a good day! Mary, take a nap!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – Happy Anniversary!! Yes, I know all about farmers that are obsessed with harvest and they should be but with today’s huge equipment it doesn’t take long. 54 years ago it was lots more work and I’m sure they couldn’t imagine why you would have picked that date! Haha!! So when did you actually start farming and how did you do it? Unless a son can get into farming with his dad, we don’t understand how they could afford it.

Hazel! Doing the best at what dogs do!

Marie, two dif quilts from the same pattern! Good job! I often say to myself I like this pattern I hope to do it again then I think of all the patterns I have that I have not done and desire to do, and then think just forget that pattern. But I have one I have done 4 times. To my defense two were wedding quilts. LOL

Very cool in SW Iowa this morning. Turned on the heat. But it’s supposed to very warm today and next few days again. I need to tend outside flower pots but I have two things in the sewing room that are on deadline. Then I need to get ready for a retreat next week in Schuyler, NE. I was hoping to cut a new project. I emptied two project boxes so why not, right? Open to discussion ha ha. Not really!

Enjoyed today’s blog and pics were great!

Hazel! She and Sammie would be a pair that would drive anyone nuts! Sammie does the same thing, here comes Nelson, looking back for Sam, but no Sammie. Call as I do, no Sammie. She starts whining around 9:30 every night, I tell her to hush and hold her off until 10or later then tell her not to run off, stay by the house and sometimes that works believe it or not. Other times, here comes Nelson, looking back to see if Sam is coming. Call as I do, no Sam. So I go to bed and wait until she comes barking to get in, sometimes with an opossum playing dead, or after being skunked (3 times this summer!!) or just dirty. I do what must be done and try to get a couple of hours of sleep. The vet confirmed it is the breed and they know at night is when the other critters are out for them to hunt. Love them to pieces but they are stinkers!

Today is sewing day with my three friends. During the summer we go to a lovely park with spotless restrooms and we sit under the pavilion and enjoy. This morning, I need to call my local library to see if our winter room is available for sewing. It is low 40s, in the 30s to the north and expected to be only mid 60s late afternoon. When I stepped outside to let the dogs out this morning I found I need mor than my sweatshirt to go to the barn – it’s cold out there. There is heavy fog above the pond so the air is really cold compared to the pond temperature.

    Have a blessed day everyone!

Linda – chilly here, too, but I’m persevering in the porch with a blanket over my lap. Hazel will keep me on my toes for sure and Keeper is the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. I gave them a treat last night for supper – canned food – and I obviously shouldn’t have because Keeper had an accident in the night. He tried to wake me up but I didn’t understand so now I have that mess to clean up. I know he’s just humiliated.

The hurricane was the worst destruction i have seen in awhile. So much damage over a wide area. And then being cut off from everything without power. Hard to get word out that you are in need of help, or that you are safe. Can’t even image that sand. Oh my.
The pencil quilt is so cute!
Marie, I couldn’t tell you used the same pattern. I love it in black.
That tree looks like a play house made in heaven for Hazel! I don’t know how you keep up with her!
That hurricane was so widespread we had rain for three days, major power outages in South Dayton! All my dead grass is green again. The rain started by 6 am Friday morning and the winds by Friday afternoon. And that’s Central Ohio. The satellite images told the story how widespread the damage would be.

  9. Kathy in western NY

Hazel is going to keep you young well into your 80’s Mary!
The quilts of Marie are a good example how colors can give different looks and I like that for a quilt lesson. I lack color know how so appreciate the visuals.
I wonder what’s worse using a pay loader for….moving piles of sand or piles of mud. Such a stark contrast of what this hurricane has done to our lands.

  10. Lynette in Orlando

Oh my sweet Hazel!!!! We love them but oh how the aggravate us sometimes!!! Mary, I feel your pain — been there…… but wouldn’t give up my animals for a million dollars. Beautiful quilts…. I’m starting to see photos from friends over in the Sarasota area…… breaks my heart……. messaged with a friend who lives outside of Asheville….. our brains cannot fathom the destruction up there. It’s going to take ages to rebuild power grids, etc. Prayers for all those affected.

  11. Barbara (in MO)

Love all the quilts today. I would never have thought that Marie’s quilts were both made from the same pattern. Really had to look twice! I agree with your rant, its next to impossible to find anything at the stores these days so you have to do without or order online. Frustrating!

  12. Sharon from Ohio

Mary: regarding not finding spray starch….I did find it in my local Dollar Tree of all places! Of course, I was looking for liquid starch which they didn’t have..lol! Has anyone made the ghosts that I am seeing various places made with liquid starch and cheesecloth..so simple, but adorable.

Hazel is a pill, but adorable!

    1. Lynette in Orlando

Sharon — totally agree with you. Found many an item at Dollar Tree when I couldn’t find it anywhere else.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – we made those ghosts years ago – I should try it with the kids. Thanks for the reminder.

  13. Jo in Wyoming

I was so focused on your story, I missed the ads! It took the 3rd reading to remember to click the ads. When Loretta’s nose is engaged, her ears turn off. Hazel is quick, but she does listen.
I got Loretta a runners light. She has to wear it as a collar after dark. I’d never find her in the pasture and if her nose is engaged, it could be hours.

I demonstrated bullseye quilt to the inmates today. They were excited to get started on their “ruffled flower” quilts. I hope they will have great show and tell next time.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – I hope you’ll show us their Bullseye quilts when they’re done! Hazel definitely could use a light although she is actually fenced in here – about 6-7 acres. I couldn’t live here without fencing. Does Loretta ever have a dog friend to play with?

      1. Jo in Wyoming

I’m not allowed to take pictures in jail. So many times I wanted to, but I play by the rules there.
I got liquid starch at Walmart. Two jugs of it. I do a lot of shaking before I use it, but it should last the rest of my life.
Loretta has 5 fenced acres to run around on and she checks every inch of it. The only company Loretta has had is Loki. He’s been gone for 3 years.

The pictures of the damage from the hurricane are unbelievable. My heart aches for them.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – oh, shoot! Guess I should have realized that. I’d really love to see them – just tell me how they do.

  14. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Thanks for pointing out Marie C’s two beautiful quilts are the same pattern. Both are great! Hazel is too funny. But, I would not think so if I had to chase her around late at night!! You did a great job on the pencil quilt.
I am still working on Honor Flight kits. Luckily, I have some great quilters who make them up for the Veterans.
I do remember Ina from the Goat Gazette. Was she the one I talked with when I ordered things? Everyone at the shop was so nice. I am still disappointed I never made it out. Sleep well tonight, Mary🥳😴

  15. Dorothy

You raised Hazel right, it’s just her breed. Which is far too energetic for me 🙂
Stores only re-order what the majority of customers buy. (I think quilters are the only people that use starch nowadays–who irons shirts, pillowcases, etc. now–No one)

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dorothy – well, who can use all that bleach? How about a little variety on the shelves –

  16. Jeanie S, Central IL

I love hearing about Hazel’s adventures; she is so funny! Having Keeper as her side kick is probably a good thing, since he can keep “Mom” in the loop.
Today is my hubby’s birthday; he prefers pumpkin pie to birthday cake. We used to have our first pot of chili and pumpkin pie for his birthday, but it has not been chili weather yet.
I feel so bad for all who have had to deal with the effects of the hurricane.
    Thanks, Mary/Take Care
