Hidden In Plain Sight, 3-11-25

Yes, this pattern is available for $10 – it’s found in our book Beyond the Battlefield which is out of print. We did 4 Civil War books with Martingale – I wish they were still available. I ran across another quilt from a Civil War book just recently and thought how fun it would be to make it in new colors – so that’s next.

The original quilt has been on my desk chair seat for awhile – I’ve always loved the colors

I recently ordered this book to use some of those jellyrolls that are sitting here. I decided to make the cover quilt first so that what I’m working on.

Temps got cooler today which was fine with me – the mud isnt quite as squishy. And the dogs aren’t quite as dirty.

Now to be clear – the Citrus Splash/Flower Farm quilt pattern will not be available for a bit. I found someone to proof the pattern for me and I will announce the pattern when it’s available for sale.

I found Patti’s address and wrote her a card – hope I hear from her.

What are the titles of the books published by Martingale? We have a pretty robust used book market here and it’s always fun to have titles to hunt for.

  2. Carla

Mary can this be true? It says 8 copies of Beyond the Battlefield are available. Just thought someone might like to know.

My favorite fabric is the Civil War/ reproduction fabric. I just love all the rich colors and the Country Threads patterns always look great in those colors. I’m going to have to dig out my Beyond the Battlefield book too.
I’m sorry to see Joann Fabrics close because they did carry a lot of brand name notions and good quilt batting sales. I do agree that the “ quilt fabric “ was not the quality I wanted to use in the projects I make. Like many other things nowadays, the quality seems to have really diminished in most of their merchandise the last few years.
I hope you get a response from Patti in Florida and that she is doing well.

My friend Kathy loves Civil War fabric & she has made some wonderful quilts from your book. I’m so sad that Martingale is no longer publishing books. Those boys sure are good buddies & now FB is getting in on the act. I’m working on a table mat for our guild challenge & the pattern I chose sure is challenging! Got to keep those old brain cells firing on all cylinders.

Mary, It sure looks like you are living in a happy, relaxing home. It’s a surprise FB takes to Hank so well and tolerates him but whatever works, works. Weather is getting really nice and warm for the time being. Hubby and I are heading way north for the weekend so I’m anticipating winter jackets. We will be at Naniboujou Lodge which isn’t far from the Canadian border. It’s so remote, they don’t have tv and cell phones have been a challenge at times. It sounds like wi-fi is available so technology is moving forward. We’ll see. BUT Lake Superior is in their back yard. They are hosting a quilt retreat in late October, so I’m signed up and can’t hardly wait. They had retreats before covid, and it was the most relaxing, restful and fun vacation ever.

Janet – oh, what a weekend! And then again in October which we will want to hear about.

FB looks like she has found a new friend. Some cats prefer dogs over their fellow cats. I think I have all of your books. I work mainly with reproduction fabric, but occasionally, I like something brighter.

Have to admit I had a chuckle when you asked if anyone recognized the pattern! Maybe you’ve mentioned it before, but do you have an idea of how many patterns you and Connie designed?
Is Keeper sad when Hank goes home? Their love for each other is so apparent, just by the photos that you share.
Love the baby quilt so much. Simple squares with a border that adds so much, and such a cute backing!

Jan – no, I have absolutely no idea how many patterns over 40 years. Hank has never stayed here this long but I think it’s fair to say they’ll both be devastated for a couple days ….and then we’ll start play dates, several a week maybe? Brothers from different mothers!

Where is everyone this morning? Busy busy?
I love all the pictures and especially Hank and Keeper! Hank and FB are funny. FB doesn’t look like she minds him eat all!
I have several jelly rolls that I should sew up! The list is endless. 😂
We got a call that our 10 year old grandson was sick at school, and they asked if we would come get him. So, we went to get him. She had a headache and did throw up on the way home. But, now he is playing with cars and had some cereal. Mom and dad are in Florida…..think that has anything to do with it?? Needed and grandpa and grandma TLC day.
Suppose to be in the 60s today.

It’s so nice to see dogs enjoy the company of each other. Fluffy Bun will miss Hank, too. What a sweet dog.
Just listening to the wide spread warning alarms, testing for tornado season. Hope everyone stays safe this week. A lot of bad weather coming.
I read Go as a River. Good novel. I visited that area in Colorado where it takes place.
I also finally got my copy of God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Read it in two days! Keep me entertained.
I see that JoAnn Fabric will close all store by the end of May. Sad. It is the closest craft store to me.
Their quilt fabric came from China and didn’t impress me like they used to.
God bless all the readers. And God bless you, Mary for all you do.

Carolyn – I wouldn’t buy fabric there – such poor quality! You could almost see thru it and if I were working hard on a quilt, I’d never use second rate fabric. Not sure it would even rate as second

      1. Jan Smith

I’m with you Mary. The only fabric I’ve bought there was muslin because I wanted a thin fabric for string piecing, and it certainly was that!

Loved all the pics! Mud season is here and the dogs love it. We had a threat we thought coming our way of another blast of winter but I think it’s staying north of us as it heads east. I am leaving with three other ladies Friday early to drive to Branson for a retreat. It’s just hand sewing so no machines. It’s put on by Missie Carpenter for those who might know her and she hails from IA. The AQS is on and we plan to hit that on Saturday, the last day for the show.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran -yes, I remember Missie Carpenter – she probably doesn’t remember me but greet her from me if you think of it.

I have needed to thin out my books and noticed most of my ones to keep are from Martingale’s publishing. It’s too bad they went out of business. We have a used book store opening up near us next month. Excited to support a family doing this venture and it helps me by going through ones I won’t read now and will not make projects in some craft ones.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – oh, how I miss Martingales wonderful books! For awhile we received a copy of each new book to examine – it stretched my interests for sure – it was my favorite time!

  12. Linda in MI

Love the picture of Hank and Keeper, they really need to be together, they are brothers from another mother. Hazel is probably enjoying Hank’s visit too, the princess has a little privacy.

Good to see Fluffy Buns enjoying herself as well, my Greta will always growl at Bette, but to bad, neither one is going anywhere! Have a great day!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – late last night as I was watching tv Hank laid his head on Keeper’s back – yes, they will miss each other and we’ll need many play dates. Hank feels like part mine and I will miss him, too.

      1. Joy in NW Iowa

It is very obvious Hank loves you and is very comfortable at your home! That has to be really great for Hanks mom knowing Hank is so well loved and happy by you.
Our grandson did recover by abut 11:30 and had some cereal. Then we had burgers in the grill for lunch and tater tots and corn. We went outside and enjoyed the sun while Jay was grilling. Then he thought maybe we could play phase 10! He beat me…..but we will finish the game next time! Love him!
Have a good night. Tomorrow is another warm day! 💕
