Yup, Becky was at the hospital by 9 and at 8:20 my team of doctors walked into my room to find me sitting on my bed with my coat on. They laughed – they’ve never had a patient so eager to leave!
Are you watching Mary Poppins like we are? Has there ever been such a sweet, delightful movie? We marvel over the improvement of cartoon quality and the talent of Julie Andrew’s and Dick Van Dyke. Rick and I probably saw this in 1964 at the theater in Forest City.
Tonight on the NBC Evening News the last story was about Weaver’s Shoe and Repair Shop in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Three generations of the Weaver family have run this store which supplies shoes and repairs for people around the world. Rick buys his shoes here and they also have put zippers in the side of work boots so he can get them on. We thought it was a lovely story for Thanksgiving.
Here’s an eye opener – I think my front tooth got chipped during surgery. I kept feeling a very sharp edge and sure enough, there’s a small chip!
Hazel and Keeper were beside themselves when we pulled in the yard and I was in tears. They have surrounded me for hours and now they’re playing together like puppies. It’s kind of hilarious! Keeper just skulked around here when I was gone and I’m thrilled that I’m here tonight because it’s gotten very cold – with more deep freeze temps to come. he’ll be happy to sleep in the house tonight.
One disturbing note – I can’t find FluffyBun – she’s so neurotic, who knows where she is? But it’s so cold outside!!!
I’m on such a strict restricted diet – I need to send Rick to the grocery store tomorrow for protein drinks. Ugh.
I have only just begun opening my stack of cards – thank you – it’s so fun reading them and I can’t believe how many there are! giggle giggle!
So tomorrow I’ll feel more like writing – just wanted you all to know I’m sitting in my own chair tonight…..watching Mary Poppins!!!

You have had quite the ordeal, and home has to be the best place for healing. I am sorry you had a stressful, unpleasant hospital experience, but I am so happy it is behind you.
Hugs/Prayers, Mary 🥰
So glad to hear you are home! Be sure to rest so your body can heal & recover. I hope FluffyBun shows up soon. Continuing to send prayers for your quick recovery.
Mary, Welcome Home! this year I shall be grateful that you are home and on the mend. Rest, be kind to yourself and enjoy Mary Poppins.
Good news that you’re home! There were so many good pictures. Thanks for sharing them while you were waiting. The quilts on display in Indiana were exceptional. That’s not so terribly far away. I may have to go visit there. As expected, it’s cold this weekend. Had a dusting of snow today.
So glad to hear that you are home. I think dogs are the best for showing their love to us. Living in Buffalo Center there are cars from all over in front of Weavers almost every day, they are great and can fix anything!
Lynn – yes, they can!!!!
So happy you’re at home! There’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed with your own pillow! LOL
I worried about your animals the whole time you were in the hospital, especially Hazel and Keeper. I’m sure they wondered what happened to mom! Rest and keep healing.
so glad to know you are home. i can just see you sitting on the side of the bed in your coat! now you can relax and be yourself. thanks to whoever for the info on the protein drinks. i’ve been drinking boost but remember that my sister’s chemo docs had her drinking the premier protein. it tastes good also. guess i’ll switch back to that now when i run out.
thanks for all the pictures you sent out while you were bored in the hospital. it was so good to see the red/blue star quilt – same pattern i’m using in the red/green stars. i almost went with blue but decided i might need a green quilt. mine is only half done. the red/blue looks great.
all the quilts look great. just can’t get enough of them. the exquisite red/green applieque quilts are so great to look at. it is not what i want to do. i still have my dear jane to quilt one day. now i piece and quilt for myself and to give away. my days of trying to be at the top of the heap are over. not trying for ribbons or teaching or anything. just enjoying myself and using up my fabric. it makes me happy and surely lowers the stress levels.
again, i’m so pleased that you are home. enjoy yourself, family, friends and pets. hugs, patti in florida
I’m so happy you are home. Take care of yourself. Very interesting to read about the protein drinks. The ladies in this group are so knowledgeable. I learn so much here. I knew Hazel and Keeper would be so happy when you got home. Nothing better than a dog’s love!!!
It now makes sense to me that protein would help the healing process. 77 years has to be a record for preparing Thanksgiving dinner. No small feat indeed.
I watched “Princess Bride” and am queueing up “Stardust”.
I wanted to watch Mary Poppins. I was recording it, but the power went out several times. I finally had to give up. I havea big gap about 15 minutes into the show, and then I lost the last 15 minutes. If I want to watch it, I guess I will have to rent it.
Home, Happy Place, Hazel And Keeper, Mary Poppins—Priceless. Enjoy being home😀
27* here this AM. Brrrr
Chocolate Premier Protein very good, not chalky.
Mary, Glad to hear you are home and settled in.
Sue H. , The turkey pillow from yesterday’s blog post is a Country Threads pattern. Fun to make.
What good news to hear. Glad that Becky was able to pick you up and get you home to the farm. I can only imagine how glad everyone was to see you! Rest up and take good care of yourself.
How wonderful that you are *finally* home, Mary! Rest up and take care!
Thanks to Sue for sending you those beautiful pictures of the Quilters Hall of Fame and stunning red, white and green antique quilts, and for giving us the explanation. I’ve read about Marie Webster, but never been to that museum. Maybe I will make it there in my travels someday.
I want to extend my sympathy to Pamela on the tragic loss of her friend and friend’s grandson. How terrible! I know you will miss your friend, I hope the good memories will ease your pain.
We had a quiet Thanksgiving, just the 2 of us. But DH still wanted to cook a turkey, so I let him. He’s always cooked our turkeys on a charcoal Weber grill and they are always good. I made only 2 sides, dressing and green beans with mushrooms and bacon as accompaniments. Still more than enough food, and we’ll be eating leftovers for weeks. Since I didn’t have so much meal prep to do, had some time to work on quilting a baby quilt. Hope to finish it soon.
So glad you are safely home! Kept checking my email throughout the day and finally before I went to bed there was your post. Can only imagine the happy tail wags when Keeper and Hazel saw you come through the door. Thanks so much for mentioning the Weaver segment on NBC. We didn’t see it but went back to find it online. My Mom grew up in Buffalo Center and we always went to Weaver’s when we went back to visit. Hope you are resting today and enjoying the peace of your home. Take care!
HOME! Ah, so sweet.
Last night I wasn’t able to watch Mary Poppins spin her magic as I was at a second family gathering for Thanksgiving. However, my younger daughter watched that movie on VHS often as she loved Mary Poppins. When she made her first trip to Disneyland at the age of three she stated emphatically that she wanted to see Mary Poppins. Personally, I’d never seen Mary Poppins there and tried to lower her possible disappointment level should it not happen. Well, Mary Poppins proved me wrong! My daughter was so thrilled when we saw her, and Bert. Our second magical experience, the first for our older daughter and the Seven Dwarfs.
So glad you are at home and on the next leg of your recovery.
Jan
I’m also happy to hear that you are home again. Like others have said, there is no place like home. Maybe that also has something to do with our age😂. Take care and enjoy your family of fur babies. Thanks to Becky for being such a helpful sister. So glad she is close enough to you that she can help you out.
So happy you’re home, Mary. After cooking thanksgiving dinner for 50+ years, my daughter in law said, you’ve done it long enough and we’re going out this year. I was always adamant about staying home for thanksgiving, preparing, eating, cleaning up, leftovers, etc. We went out to one of the nicer restaurants in Pittsburgh and I absolutely loved it. We had everything we would have had at home, plus, prime rib, shrimp cocktail and a large variety of desserts. Then we got up from the table and someone else cleaned up. We didn’t have leftovers but no one seemed to miss them. Then we came home and visited and enjoyed the evening with no fuss. There were only 7 of us, we don’t have a big family. The restaurant was packed, so many, many people had the same idea as us. I also had major surgery two weeks ago and being a very active 80+ years old, the recuperation is driving me nuts with all the restrictions. But we’ll both get through it and back to our normal routine. Get well soon.
So glad you are home Mary. We too watched Mary Poppins and I said to my husband, when we move I want a tv in my sewing room. I moved my cutting mat and fabric to the dining room table so I could watch it. I was cutting out fabric and batting to make 9 of those fabric bowl holders that you use when you are putting a bowl in the microwave. I am going to give one to each family that comes for Christmas dinner. My plan is to sew them today and this weekend before my knee surgery. I will send a picture when I’m done.
Teresa – you are really organized – getting your gifts made now before surgery!!!
So glad you are home! Tell Becky that we love her for taking such good care of you!
Check the reruns on ABC for a special that ran Wednesday before Thanksgiving about the making of Mary Poppins. Great fun with interviews from lots of the people who worked on it.
When we eat out and they ask for a name, I always say, “Mary Poppins”. Usually, the person grins and writes it down. Try it. When they call your name, watch the reactions of all the kids in the room. They wave and smile. Once a cook came from the back and thanked me for putting a smile on the face of all the kitchen staff. Just practically perfect in every way…
Tanya – I, going to do just that the next time we wait!!! Such a cute idea. I saw that show about the making of Mary Poppins – my last night in the hospital. Loved the songwriting brothers
So happy to hear you’re home. I’m sure that’s such a relief. Take it one step at a time and take good care of yourself.
Happy that you are home with Rick and your fur babies. Hope each day is better.
We had a nice Thanksgiving with family. Will have our Christmas with them tonight. The excitement of seven great grand children opening their gift from us.
The kids are into Grinch. Outfits and Cindy Lou Who braids. I think I need to read the book again!
Hurray for being home! Sitting in your own chair and sleeping in your own bed is the best medicine there is! Regarding protein drinks: my dad passed away three years ago at 94. He was in pretty good health but didn’t have much appetite as he got into his 90’s. He was supposed to drink 2-3 protein drinks a day, but he didn’t like them. I did some research. The ones hospitals serve and doctors prescribe cost more and have less protein than Premier Protein and the identical knockoff from Walmart and Sam’s club. Guess why! Boost and Ensure are reimbursable by Medicare. More expensive and less protein so you have to drink more. 😡. Premier Protein is geared to athletes. Dad liked almost all the Premier protein flavors and they have 30 grams of protein per serving-twice what the others have. I devised this for Dad and I often have it for breakfast myself: slice and freeze a banana. Put frozen banana in your blender with Premier chocolate, add 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter powder, and blend. Delicious and 38 grams of protein. I’ve used other frozen fruit—mixed berries with vanilla is good. Hope this helps—
PS—I wrote a reply yesterday explaining the Marie Webster and Christ red and green appliqué quilts, but it didn’t post, so went back and did it again if anybody is interested.
Sue – you are a wealth of information , Girl! My hospital unit was out of Premier Protein so I had Ensure but what you said sounds about right. There’s always a side story, isn’t there???? If I can’t find it locally, I wonder if I can order online – Amazon probably.
I haven’t checked the comments this morning will will tell the readers to go back. How did you feel when it did t post? Extremely upset, disappointed, furious???? That’s how I feel when it happens to me – ha!!!
Major annoyance! I can’t even imagine how mad I’d be if it was my blog and stuff didn’t post!
If you have a Walmart close, they have Equate protein drinks whose ingredients appear to be the same as Premier Protein. Sam’s Club has the same thing under a different name and I know you can order online from them. I would bet whoever makes Premier Protein makes the Walmart version. I’m insatiably curious and have done a fair amount of research on who makes store brands, and it’s mostly the same manufacturers as name-brand products. I worked at Sears when I was in college and found that Sears-branded items were all made by major manufacturers. Their sewing machines under the Kenmore label were made by Janome! Their machines had a great reputation for quality and I had one for years.
I’ve had my Kenmore sewing machine since 1982 and stroll running!
Mary, SO GLAD you are home!!!! Wonderful news. FYI — get Carnation Instant Breakfast, whole milk and ice cream and make a milkshake. High in protein, you can make different flavors and can potentially taste better than some of the protein drinks.
Lynette – oh, wow! I will put it on my list!!!!
Mary, Lynette is right about Carnation Instant Breakfast! When my husband went through chemo & afterwards, his doctor told me make this for him. It has a better flavor than the other protein shakes. I usually bought strawberry & added a few fresh strawberries to the blender! This was his afternoon treat! I keep it on hand to have if I’m in a hurry in the morning.
Good news! Prayers for continued healing and strength.
It was fun looking at readers’ photos.
Mary, so glad your sister was there to pick you up earlly!! What a blessing. Sounds like you’re enjoying being home. Hope FluffyBun shows up soon.
I remember that years ago Mary Poppins was the first movie out small girls watched. Good times.
I was delighted to get this news this morning in email. You are home and resting well. Keep up the good work. Sorry I never got out a card to you but it’s been so hectic for me traveling and being with family. I am still in Bellevue, IA and home bound cooking and holding newborn great grandchildren. Been a wonderful Thanksgiving. It is cold out there! Take care.
Welcome home, Mary…I know the feeling of wanting to get out of hospital, I went through that 8 yrs ago. So glad you were able to be home for Thanksgiving.
I keep Chocolate Premier Protein 30g on hand to get extra protein. Lots of flavors, my fav is chocolate. Take it real easy & feel better soon. Always look forward to your blogs.
Home Sweet Home!!!! So happy for you Mary. We had just our two kids and families here for Thanksgiving. We had all the fixings. I love Thanksgiving and family time. They left around 5:00 and I was in my PJx by 5:05.Take care Mary.
Yay… so glad you are home! What an ordeal you have been through. Sit back and relax and enjoy all the comforts of home!
Mary, so glad you’re finally home! The best place to be, as we get older I think we all agree it’s our haven! Our daughter had her thyroid removed due to cancer 5 years ago. 13 hours on the operating table, anyhow she had nerve damage to her arm, she’s a NP and she thinks she was positioned incorrectly or someone leaned on her arm during surgery. She lost some feeling in her fingers, such an ordeal for her. We had everyone here yesterday for dinner. I too was exhausted by the time they left and immediately put my pjs on! Today I’m going to start Christmas decorating. Although I can’t go like I use to, so just going to take my time!! Enjoy your time home and try to relax!! Hugs friend!!
What a great Thanksgiving gift – to be home with all its comforts! Thankful that you have survived the worst and are on the path to “normal”. God bless you and yours.
Welcome home. Settle into the pleasure of your home and your family. You will be developing some new routines because you are still in recovery mode, but that is OK.
There are a wide variety of protein drinks. Hospitals often carry Ensure. I am not particularly fond of the flavor of that brand, so have tried Boost (I like the chocolate). It has more appeal to me than Ensure, so I keep some in my pantry in case of days I can’t eat. If you don’t like the first brand of protein drink you try, try another. You should find something that is tasty enough to tempt your palate.
Welcome home. That’s a great blessing for Thanksgiving. Your own chair, bed and all your babies, can’t get much better can it!! Relax, take it easy. I do feel sorry for you having to survive for a while on protein drinks. Being a vegetarian I would most likely need to do the same thing but ugh, I think I would be sick, tried them once and that was enough. Don’t overdo!!
Welcome HOME Mary!! You’ve got a great team of locals taking care and your fur babies are happy, too! Keep your eyes looking forward and better days and nights ahead!!
So happy to hear you are Home!
Glad to hear your home Mary. Rick and the animals are excited to have you home also. I don’t know what you can eat but Kodiak makes a protein bar that tastes like Rice Krispie treats. Ate those while I was recovering. Take care and rest.
Welcome home Mary! Try to take things slow and steady! Glad you enjoyed Mary Poppins, kt is a lovely film.
I am so glad you are home. You will feel wonderful sleeping in your own bed. I too watched Mary Poppins and was thinking how far animation has come. Still a delightful movie. The The Wizard of Oz was CB on and that was a Thanksgiving event in our house because it was always shown on Thanksgiving. I haven’t seen The Wiz but I have friends who say it is great and those who say so so. So I May wait to see it.
So again don’t overdo and drink your tasty drink
Welcome home
Yay, yay, yay! So happy you split that joint. Ha ha. I love Mary Poppins and all the music and dancing. Great choreography! Love the story of the shoe cobbler. Anyone that can add zippers to old work boots is pretty darn talented. I’m sorry I missed that story.
Hoping you can find palatable protein drinks and soups to fortify your diet and healing. Turkey soup sounds good. Can you eat anything solid yet?
We did the works with turkey just for 3,of us. So much work and cleanup isn’t fun. Picking the meat off the turkey bones is a job. I need simple and easy these days. I’m grateful for the abundance of food we have and often think of those that are starving especially because of the effects of war.
Wondering if peace is ever attainable.
Enjoy being home in your happy place!
Pat in Md
Welcome home and here’s prayers for some normal days ahead! But slow and steady please!
One more thing to be thankful for this evening!
Mary, so happy you are home! I can just picture how thrilled Hazel & Keeper were to see you!! I’m sure Rick really missed you as well! The big topic today was what we were grateful for. I’m so grateful for my family & also extended family! My daughter in law’s brother & wife hosted about 25 people in their home for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner! Ron & I were made to feel so welcome! The younger men who were talking retirement were absolutely fascinated with Ron. He retired in 1985 & was asked about his military service & of course he had to show his Quilt of Valor. We all brought side dishes which made it easier for the host & hostess to serve that many people. Yes, a very nice Thanksgiving! Again, so happy you’re home in your happy place!
Welcome home, Mary!! No place like it and even more appreciated after having spent time sick in the hospital. Happy Thanksgiving!! We are still praying for you.
I’m so happy you are home! I have spent the evening entering “events” into the online records for my daytimer, so they will print out when I order it and I may be more organized next year and will remember to send cards to the people I love. It sounds like such a chore but it has been so heartwarming to see all of these names and be reminded of how many people I love–to think back on the births, the weddings, the times spent together.
I wish you sweet dreams tonight, Mary. I’m sure you’ll have tuckered out pups, wanting to snuggle up. Another reminder that it’s so good to be home. xxx
I’m glad you’re home. Now it’s Rick’s turn to “baby” you. I hope you have a restful night tonight.
Martha – are you home from your trip to Iceland??
Hi Mary, glad to hear you are safely home with Rick and the fur babies! I remember seeing Mary Poppins, very exciting for us kids! I saw the teen heel shoes in the shop window on the way to the cinema,.mum bought them on the way home for me to wear to church and Sunday school! Woo hoo! I was thrilled as a thirteen year old! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – that is such a sweet memory of your mom!!!
Good to know you are home! And in your own chair! Now the hard part starts: staying in that chair and relaxing so the good work of healing can happen.
I smiled when I read that you are watching Mary Poppins. Over the years, my hub and I have watched that movie more times than any other. 😎 What can I say…. children at hearts.
Have a good sleep tonight in your own bed!
Mary I am so happy for you! I will have greetings off to you soon! I’m kind of tied up with family!
Fun times! We had our turkey and ham tonight for supper/dinner. Our grandson Riley, came home from Peoria so son Scott and Riley came for supper. First statement was we didn’t bring anything! No worries. Plenty of food! There’s plenty of left overs! Our daughter in law was talking about an omelette for breakfast!
We r pooped. It has been super busy it seems. Fun busy!
Protein shakes aren’t so bad! It’s better than an NG tube! You need extra protein to heal!
I’m tired and going to bed. Have a good sleep!
What a blessed Thanksgiving you have had, arriving home and being able to sleep with your loved ones close by. Give Becky and Rick an extra big hug from all of us for taking such good care of the animals and for taking care of you now that you are home. I hope Becky is feeling well again. And speaking of Becky, you can make beautiful music together while she is there.
Loved the pictures you have posted today. The fawn and the kitten are precious and the baby goats (kids) are super sweet. They look just like your Samantha did when she was tiny and newly born.
We are all so glad you are home and on the mend. Now relax, enjoy your husband, pets Becky, and favorite TV shows an be a good patient for your resident nurse, Becky when she tells you to take it easy.
Gentle hugs, Jeanne in Co.
Glad you made it home. I am sure Hazel and Keeper will be much happier. We had a quiet Thanksgiving with granddaughter & her husband. I did tell them at 84 years old and on oxygen 24/7 this was the last Thanksgiving I was making. I made pies, home made rolls, turkey & stuffing, potatoes, squash, peas and 2 types of cranberry sauce. I have helped or made Thanksgiving for 77 years, time for others to step up. Later in the day we packed up 2 dinners for some friends and brought to them to enjoy. Tomorrow will be Christmas decorations go up. WE are in for some real cold weather. I still have petunias bloomin g on my deck. I expect this will be the last night to enjoy them. Rest and don’t over do. Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va.
Carolyn, how in the world did you manage to cook that big meal! Kudos to you. I’m your age, but w/o the oxy. Even so, Hub and I agreed 3 years ago that I would no longer do the big meals, etc. Imagine our surprise today when he asked when the big meal would be served so he could tell our guests. Huh? What big meal? He was so embarrassed when he called them all to say plans had changed. Guess he will remember next year. 😎 Maybe.
Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Lindah – that’s one of the funniest husband stories I’ve ever heard!!!!
Just finished Mary Pippins as well! So glad you are safely home and that the pups are keeping you safe. Sleep well and get better!
Karen C in MD
Yay! Welcome home, Mary. So glad to hear this great news. I’m sure the doctors got a chuckle seeing you there in your coat ready to go home! Can’t wait to hear more but hopefully you will get a good night’s sleep tonight. I know Hazel and Sleeper will! Jan in MA
So much to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving. So happy that you’re home and in the comfort of your fur rabies.
So glad you’re home! I have another friend who also came away with a chipped front tooth after her surgery last year. You would think there would be some safeguards against that happening. Take care!
Good to hear that you’re home.
I wish you rest, healing and lots of snuggles with your fur babies. Take care
What a happy scene you have described! So glad you are home safe and well on the way to recovery. I hope Fluffy Bun is somewhere warm!
Bing home is supercalifragilsticexpialidocious! So glad to hear you made it home and hope you have a good night in your own bed.
Happy, happy, happy that you’re back where you belong. It must feel so good!
Hazel & Keeper must be beside themselves!!
Also watching Mary Poppins. . .
Take care of yourself & don’t overdo anything!! Take care Mary
Peggy S in MN by the MOA
So glad you’re home! Take care.
So glad to hear you are home! I was waiting all day to hear from you and hoping your exodus from the hospital went well. How on earth did your tooth get chipped during surgery? Did you have a tube put in down your throat? Not sure how that would chip a tooth but I am trying to think how that could have happened. Maybe a dentist can smooth it out for you when you get your strength back. One more thing to aggravate you, right? I hope your recovery goes quickly now that you are home and it is uneventful.
I’m so glad to hear that you’re home, Mary! It will be so nice for you to sleep in your own bed tonight and wake up to your own surroundings. Sleep well friend. Happy Thanksgiving everyone
There is NO place like home Mary.
Tears of joy here for you.

There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home! Welcome home Mary!
Welcome home, Mary! So glad you are surrounded by your loved ones and in your own chair. Thanks for letting us know. Take care!
There is no place on earth as sweet as home. So glad you are there and surrounded by all who love you and you they!!
I can’t think of a more fitting end to this saga than to be home at last with your animals watching Mary Poppins. What a miserable time you’ve had. I’m sure the dogs were nuts. All the best and look forward to hearing all about where things stand now that you’re free of the hospital.
Home sweet home! Done forget to take your spoonful of sugar,Mary😊
I’m so happy to hear that you’re home, Mary. I hope you sleep well tonight in your own bed. Blessings!!
