It’s winter again! 2-21-26

As I walked the dogs in the grove this afternoon the wind chill was below zero – good grief, we got cold fast! Spoiled from that nice weather last week.

I didn’t post last night because I was busy making this little quilt with that cute cat/succulent fabric I recently got from a reader.

Here is the original pattern – Linen Bricks.

Too bad the picture of the large quilt isn’t better. I made just 5 short vertical rows which used up my 1/2 yard. I got so involved in this I didn’t get a post written plus there’s always the Olympics that I’m watching at the same time. Sigh. Tonight it’s college basketball – Iowa State coming up next.

Another reason I got so involved in this small quilt is that this fabric is directional which I always try to avoid because I have to un-sew too much to get the direction correct. Sigh

Now I’ve still got the other half yard to do something with – it’s almost like a challenge.

Remember the Country Living first issue where I showed you this picture?

I loved the quilt so much I drafted it and named it First Issue. Yes, I have a copy of this pattern and will make it available for the $5 and SASE.

How many readers look at instagram?

I love your little cat quilt. It would be perfect for Buddy to sleep on so I will take some of my cat fabric and maybe make him one someday:) I also like the First Quilt #611. Very pretty. I am wondering about the picture with Jesus and the kitties because I did not see a Tuxedo cat in there–Squeak, Millie etc. Squeak is a little pistol so I am thinking maybe Tuxedoes don’t make it to Heaven? Ha! Speaking of, how is Millie doing after her mouth surgery? I hope all better:)
We watched most of the Hockey game, went to brunch with kids and friends, then caught the end at brunch. So happy for them. Yes, I do Instagram with the kids and grandkids–all adults. I don’t do Facebook. More snow and COLD today. I am ready for 60’s, 70’s please:)

Congratulations on the negative scan! Hallelujah!!
Love the kitty fabric. Can relate to the challenge of directional fabric. Ugh. Love the quilt.
    I’m a big Instagram fan … a picture being worth a thousand words. ;o)
    Stay warm! Darn that groundhog.

    Hi Mary,
I do remember Country Living magazine and subscribed to it for years. When my husband retired, we built a timber frame home in the country on 40 acres that he inherited from his parents. It was truly in the middle of nowhere. We lived there for 14 years. When my husband got dementia, we had to sell everything and move back to be close to my daughter. As much as I didn’t want to leave my friends and quilt guild to move to Holmes County, OH, where I knew no one, I hated to go when we had to leave.
Very glad to hear that your scan was negative. What a day that must have been traveling in snow and trying to find a place to park your car. Happy to hear that you made it home safely.

  4. Marie & Kirby from so. Cal

Hi Mary, I like your “kitty quilt” it’s a great pattern for that fabric, now I know what to do with my half yards!! And of course Kirby will make it all her’s no matter where I place it! Yep, she’s just that spoiled! I follow Instagram mostly to keep up with family. And a mini weather update from southern Cal, we actually had a couple days of frost after our couple inches of rain last week, and our daytime temps were 50’s unless the wind was blowing (which is does a LOT here) then it “felt like” 25*!!!! which is really cold for us here!! However we’re heading to the mid 70’s later this week! Hang in there all, your spring temps are coming!

Absolutely, my idea of Heaven. I almost cried as Jesus is holding a ringer for my adorable Butternut. My grandson was about 7 when this round orange and white ball showed up on my front porch during a lull in getting swipe from a hurricane. I named him Butternut because . . . Tennessee . . . Civil War uniforms. My grandson immediately did what all little boys will do — shortened his name to Butt. He thought it was a huge joke to walk around holding that kitten and saying, “look at my cute little Butt.” I have a huge “collection” of cat fabric and will always try sneaking some into my projects.

We too had winter return this past week. We got four inches of snow, though 1/2 km away there wasn’t any snow. We were told when we moved here we lived in a snow belt and they were right. It was very weird after leaving home and getting down the street onto the main road and no snow. But it’s going now. The rains have returned. So glad we got all the gardening done before the snow came, now we are back working inside and starting to remove it last of the carpet in our bedroom. Can’t wait till it’s done.

I like Linen Bricks – a really good pattern for directional prints. These days, rectangles appeal to me – both half-rectangle triangles and bricks. Guess I’m bored with squares, squares, squares.

I mainly use Instagram to look at my daughter’s posts. Her hobby is nature photography and she takes beautiful photos of landscapes and birds. I occasionally look at quilting posts on Instagram, but don’t like the lack of detail. And I go to Facebook only when forced to go there by some organization who uses Facebook instead of a website. I rarely use Pinterest, being irritated by pins which don’t link back to their source.

I love blogs, and subscribe to them using Feedly. Many blogs, on a variety of topics. I like the more leisurely pace of blogs, where people “show their work”. But blogs are fading away; they take much more work than Instagram. Thank you, Mary, for this blog!

This has been a tough winter for many. Time for Spring.

  8. Elizabeth

Instagram- yes, lots of quilt posts there. A lot of designers have instagram so it’s good for inspiration.
Snow and cold here today- perfect day to snuggle on the couch with the dogs and do some hand stitching.
Mary, congratulations on the all clear!!

  9. Mary Says Sew!

The cat angel picture brought tears to my eyes, too, but my next thought was if all these cats have wings, why aren’t they trying them out, flying around and getting into all kinds of trouble? That’s what cats do! That picture would be very different, and might even test the limit of Jesus’ patience.

  10. Barbara in Columbia, SC

Watching the men’s Olympic Hockey game at present. Team USA vs Canada. I hope we kick their butts. We’re ahead at present 1 vs 0. I forgot who recommended Flexitol Heel Balm but I ordered it from Amazon and it seems to be working. A little on the expensive side but as a diabetic, I have to be very careful with my feet. Hope everyone is having a great Sunday. Thrilled with you results Mary. You go girl !!!!!

    1. Suzanne in Massachusetts

Watching from Massachusetts. Two local boys playing, one in my hometown and one in the town next to mine.

    1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Barbara – I too, ordered the Flexitol Heel Balm from Amazon and received it yesterday. I used it last night for the first time, and my heels were better this morning, so I, too, want to thank whoever posted that on this blog.

  12. Tanya in Houston

Love Pinterest, but only look at instagram when someone sends me a post to see. Jo, I was pulling for your lottery win!! That dollar spent gave us all such anticipation on your behalf!! Low 40’s, even in Texas on this beautiful Sunday morning! Love the quilt also!

  13. Diana in Des Moines

I love the Jesus picture. All my passed kitties waiting to welcome me. Such joy!
I quilted and bound 4 quilts on the snow day. Grands were home with mom, and I was content to stay in my quilt room and sew.
Church this morning, then home to start a new project!

  14. Jeanine from SE Iowa

I only look at Pintrest when it comes in my email, mainly check out some recipes and quilts. No FB or Instagram.
Cold here this morning at 10* and wind. I am not going to church today as I have had a sore throat all week. Hope it clears up soon.

  15. Fran Dixon

    Loved the last photo.

    Yes, I do Instagram!

Cold here too at 8 degrees. I need to finish shoveling my deck of snow but it will have to warm some before I venture out. I need to shovel a path to bird feeders too is why i only did half the chore yesterday. I had no repercussions from that work out for which I am grateful.

Retreat time. Farmhouse Quilting in Elk Horn, IA. Two days to prep. Tuesdy thru. Friday.

  16. Joy in NW Iowa

I do look at instagram, Facebook, Pinterest (for card ideas) and Mary’s blog, and Jo’s blog and watch a couple Amish families on ytube while I am sewing or making cards. No wonder my days are gone in a flash!
I really like the First Edition quilt!.
Boy, 3* this morning! But, it’s suppose to warm up again this week!

  17. Susan in VA

I loved the picture of the cats going to heaven, too. I do believe that animals are in heaven. It wouldn’t be heaven without them!!
I look at Instagram. Probably spend too much time scrolling through, but I enjoy it. I do Facebook, too. I keep in touch with friends on there.

  18. Bonnie in central IL

I do spend too much time on Facebook looking at all the photos of my friends’ plants and grandkids and staying in touch with distant friends and relatives, so I give it up for Lent each year. I do have an Instagram account, but rarely look at it. The high temp here at our winter home in Gulf Shores today will be 56 and sunny. High at our home in central Illinois will be 26 and windy. Glad we aren’t there! I too loved the train picture – my train car would be full of all sorts of critters from our many years on the farm – too many to count. Our son’s family is coming after church for lasagna dinner – always loud and fun. Hope everyone will have a good day!

  19. Linda in central Iowa

No to Pinterest, Instagram and rarely on Facebook; but do subscribe to several blogs and “how-to” on YouTube. Sewing mojo is slowly making it’s appearance again. My DD#12 is at the long-armer; and DD#4 has the binding on, just needs to sew the back side- will finish that after teaching my class on Tuesday night. My wet MD in one eye really has made hand sewing a challenge and many days it’s hard to see where the needle/seam allowance is on the machine. too – they keep “moving”. I don’t see straight lines. After many, many months of shots every 4 weeks, it is starting to stabilize. so the shots are 6 weeks apart this time. It has been so difficult to focus on close-up stuff like sewing, reading, computer work. After the eye get settled down; I get to have my cataracts taken care of; then finally get new glasses. Well, I guess I just explained why my mojo went on vacation – it was no fun at my place. We got about 7″ of snow, but it is quickly disappearing. Daylight savings is 2 weeks away – ugh – back in the dark in the mornings again. Takes me a couple of weeks to adjust.

  20. Marcia SW Ohio

I started Instagram when my 16 year old granddaughter was permitted by her parents to get on it. Her dad monitors it closely(not allowed on Facebook)
Most of mine are quilting related.

  21. Cindy Kuipers

Love the picture of Jesus and the cats.
I do look at Instagram and Facebook.
Thankful you had a clean scan. What a relief!

  22. Gloria from CC

We had 10” plus of snow!! When we went to Mason City yesterday to attend the Gardening/Outdoor Event at the Fairgrounds we noticed that your area dodged the bullet this time.
Love the picture of Jesus with all the cats going to Rainbow Bridge to wait for their owners. I’ve had so many horses, cats and dogs over my lifetime, there will be a stampede of animals rushing to greet me.

  23. Connie R. In N. Wis.

No instagram or facebook for me. I waste enough time on Pinterest and don’t want to get hooked on instagram too.
We’ve had several straight days of heavy “snowman making “ snow. We’re nowhere near Spring in this part of the country.
I too will miss the Olympics. So inspiring to see what those young people accomplish.

  24. Jo, didnt win the lottery, in Wyoming

I will miss seeing the Olympics.
Somehow, those young people take on all that pressure and still deliver incredible skills.

Getting to explore the wilderness trail was good for everyone. Did you get your golf cart back?
It’s goina warm up next week…but the wind is goina blow too.🤨

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – my golf cart is back but those huge drifts are still on the main trail so the golf cart has to wait.

    2. Connie R.

Jo, I was expecting you to be traveling to some exotic tropical island with your anticipated lottery winnings!
Sorry it didn’t pan out for you. Maybe next time.

  25. Kathy

In the picture, Jesus is holding my cat Thomas Omalley who passed away this past summer. It made me cry and happy at the same time. I miss Thomas, he was one of a kind.
