July 3, 2021

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! This is what I did today – I cleaned the porch or at least I tried to. Spiders get into those angled spaces and you can’t just vacuum them out. It takes a bottle brush to fit into that angle and then I used the power washer. I did not get finished however.

Tonight we went to Britt to eat at the newly remodeled Hob Nob bar and restaurant to celebrate my birthday.

When we were little kids walking with our mom on the street, we’d pass the open door of the Hob Nob and it looked so fun – it was dark, music was playing, pool tables clacking and Hazel would say “Don’t look in there!” It was a bar, you know. So tonight we toasted Hazel’s memory over burgers and beer. We weren’t entirely thrilled however and don’t know if we’ll return.

Here is my Number 3.

Don’t forget that all our patterns are on sale until Monday and then Wear Warm Clothes will be available online.

This would be a great time to start working on this quilt so it will be ready to hang when the weather turns cold!

Tomorrow I’ll measure the corn that should be “knee high on the 4th of July”.

This picture was taken last Wednesday when the kids were here and Sam brought the cake. I’ve also had a birthday lunch and Connie gave me this sweet pincushion.

Becky also made me Heath Bar cake – I am “birthdayed” out! Where’s my sewing machine????

Happy Birthday to you. You didn’t tell us it was your big day.
I love that cute haircut you got…it’s darling.
I think there is a law against cleaning on your birthday. You may end up in jail. Oh! You could start a quilting program there😁.
My county is so low on folks vaccinated, most of us are wearing our masks a lot more. Stubborn, independent wyomingites.

Jo in Wyoming – at 73 I didn’t see the need to bring it up ahead of time – haha!!

Happy Birthday, Mary. Isn’t it just so nice that we can get together these days, laughing all the way. We got together today at my SIL’s this afternoon. Luckily the clouds came up and it cooled off to comfortable with only a few drops of rain. It it had rained, we all would have been out standing in it. There were at least 20 of us. Happy July 4th to everybody. We are so lucky to live in America.

Betty K – yes, we are all so lucky to live here and I say it all the time to Rick – how glad I am to live in the country in this little community of Garner. It would be hard to beat.

Your comment about the bar as a child brought back memories to me. There was a bar in the two block commercial district in our town. When walking by with my mother she would always tell me “ladies don’t go into bars”. To this day I have seldom been in a bar. I just never got used to it.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gwen – all the “bars” around here serve food so I guess I got over the issue but your mom sounds like my mom.

JERRY MEASURED OUR CORN IN THE GARDEN A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO AND IT WILL BE WAY OVER THE KNEE HIGH STAGE TOMORROW.
Trees are suffering from the heat wave we had, Going to be a bad year for Christmas tree growers so many brown tips on the trees. Our hay crop was about a third of normal if that..

Happiest of birthdays to you, Mary! Sounds like you had lots of celebrating. Good for you! I hadn’t heard of a Heath bar cake before. I will have to Google the recipe, as that is my husband’s favorite candy bar.

Belated 71st Birthday wishes, Mary! How many boxes of candles did it take for the flames 🔥 on your delicious Heath bar cake? So nice you had a Happy Birthday!
There were two lightning caused fires too close to us, but Forest Service had them under control. This morning we had a sprinkle…wish it was more, tho!
    HAPPY 4th…

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Launa – the kids didn’t have 73 candles and it’s a good thing because the first ones would be burned out by the time we got to the last ones! Hahaha!!

  28. Dianna

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dianna – where is your retreat? And what is your number 3?

      1. Dianna

My retreat is a day retreat, it is from 8:00-8:30 with lunch and supper provided. The retreat is at The Siena Center run by the Dominican Sisters of Racine, Wi. The retreat center is beautiful with amazing views of Lake Michigan.
My number 3 is a blue and white half square triangle with various sizes so I making it up as I go. Excited to work on it this week. Thanks to you it will be on the list to finish!

I remember walking by a bar like yours too with my grandma only she would tell me about going there to meet her friends so she was very outgoing and because it was a college town, my kids went to the same bar in their days. It’s still around. My grandmas house was always the one people hung out at and she always fed a hungry down and out person. Or gave them a drink to sit and talk at her dining room table. No judgement. I learned so much from her and my grandfather who came to Ellis Island for a better life here and think of them always on this day. Caring, kind and compassionate people just like you Mary, who appreciate everything. Happy Birthday to you!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy in western NY – where did your grandparents come here from? Mine came from Sweden.

  30. Judy

Happy Birthday! Sounds like you had a great birthday with more than one celebration.

  31. Susan from Michigan

Happy birthday Mary! You look so youthful while standing with your birthday cake! And happy!
