Two card recipients, Phyllis and Peggy, have thanked all of you today. They both so appreciated your cards, comments, little anecdotes, and words of sympathy. We all know how hard it is to compose those sincere thoughts and it seems you’re all good at it. Once again, I want to thank you for taking the time to mail a card. Kindness does matter and most times it matters more than you’ll ever know.
Vicki in Seattle has been making placemats for Meals On Wheels. Just look at what she’s made:

In Western Oregon it reached 100 degrees. This hot chick enjoyed a portable fan!

I took my AC unit out of the window today. Since it will be in the high 40’s tonight, I don’t think I’ll need it. Bonnie who sent the hot chick pic thought 40’s sounded really wonderful – ha!
The Fever lost to the Lynx tonight in a very entertaining game which I loved even tho my team lost. I can’t believe the season will be over soon.
I’m going to finish this book tonight by one of my favorite authors. The plot is unusual because it takes place in an assisted living home for dementia patients and one of the main characters is only 32. Early age dementia – very sad. Dementia at any age is very cruel – I believe it’s been called the long goodbye.

From a Texas reader – Texas “winter” scene

Thanks for being such a great group of friends! I especially appreciated the education about butterfly needles because I’m quite sure there’s more IVs in my future.
Who watches college football? Who do you cheer for? An alma mater or just a team you like? Just curious. I need to get excited for Saturday afternoon games.

I’m watching the NBC nightly news. They are talking about The Wave at the IA football stadium. It was a real surprise to Iowa that they lost to Iowa State! Have to have those surprises. No guarantees until the final buzzer rings. I’ve been working with a group making quilts for families in distress. Tonight a friend said she has a couple of block sets that we may put together for donation quilts for groups. They were made by quilters for quilters. We’ll see what we get.
Dee – oh, shoot – I was still outside. I’ll go online and watch it – thanks for letting me know!
Dee – I went online to see the NBC news piece on The Wave – I loved the commentary about giving a wave to someone. Its a little piece of kindness, if you will.
,I am loving our cool weekend temps; it was fun to wear long sleeves for a couple days.
Sending continued hugs to Peggy and Phyllis as they adjust to their forever changed lives. 🤗
Vickie’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ placemats are great; what a wonderful idea!
Thanks for the cute picture of the ‘Four Friends’-so sweet. Take Care, Mary 🥰
Hi, Mary! I sent you the photo. It’s Texas “snow” in September, not winter. In winter all we get is clouds or rain. Maybe a few days of freezing weather, but not every winter.
The placemats are so nice, Vicki!
My sister and brother-in-law had an anniversary party today. It was really nice. Spent Friday and early this morning getting the hall ready. Great fellowship and fun. Im tired tonight !!
Our college team is University of Michigan. We always laugh that my husband and I graduated from Eastern Michigan University but our money went to U of M when both of our kids went to Michigan! I am also a fan of Michigan State University.
Take care everyone.
I always enjoy your pictures. The card really made me laugh.
So true!
i, too, cracked up over the card. has to be a chromosome thing. my husband (an electrical engineer – think computers) can’t find anything in this house. we moved in april 2001. he also doesn’t understand the concept of the largest pan goes on the bottom, not on the top. sometimes it drives me crazy. i constantly have to ask where he puts stuff.
thanks for the good thoughts on my quilt group. i firmly believe that for every kindness or act of goodness (or charity), it comes back to you at least two-fold if not more. i enjoy doing it and i love it that it makes so many many people happy. this ‘pathways to hope’ group is for people down on their luck, ex-addicts, just out of prison, just out of abuse center, anyone that needs help. they do pay for their housing (about $1200 for a one-bedroom in an area where it is usually in the 2000+ range). we donate to veterans, pregnancy centers (where the ladies learn how to parent also), several childrens groups, cancer centers where people go through treatments, several churches who have different charities, one group helps ladies coming out of domestic abuse shelters to set up their lives again. there doesn’t seem to be an end to the needs out there. i’m glad i’m in a position to help. the good Lord has kept me going with my COPD since 2003 and he was good to me before. this is how i give back.
i so much enjoy hearing about everyone’s lives. i haven’t followed the wnba. i used to follow national football. now i follow national basketball and can’t wait for the season to start. pre-season starts the first of october. we have a team in our town that is finally doing great again. orlando magic.
i did spend about two hours this afternoon cutting up more scraps. would really like to get this stack of pressed fabric off my ironing board. saw a thing about another scrap quilt made with 4.5 x 8.5″ bricks. sounds like it will use more quicker than the 2.5 x 4.5. it’s an idea any way.
patti in florida
I left a message earlier, but it is not on here. I was sure it was there after I posted it.
I enjoyed reading the blog. Isobel is so cute in that picture. Also, like all the placemats.
Our small sewing group at church are making lap (wheelchair size) quilts from Christmas fabrics for one of our local nursing homes. We are hoping to make 60, but will see how we get along. We have done it for a couple other nursing homes the past two years.
Iowa lost to Iowa State in the last couple minutes. Good for the Iowa State fans, but I’m sure many uphappy Iowa fans. It was played at Iowa. They should have won, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. It is a big in state rivalry. We cheer for both teams.
Have a wonderful day tomorrow as you worship at your church.
Jeanine – it was not minutes – it was won with a 54 yard field with one second left on the clock! Unbelievable no matter who won
Mary – Yes it was. I think Iowa thought they had it won…..surprise, surprise!
I think making the placemats is a wonderful, kind thing to do!
We are Michigan, “GoBlue” fans and altho Michigan played today, they didn’t show up for the game!
We are watching Iowa/Iowa State and cheering for Iowa! We lived in Iowa for 13 years.
I love the placemats. So beauutiful!! Wonderful job,, Vickie!
Isabel is so beautiful. Such a sweet picture. And the little fella on the bale of hay was cute too. Reminds me of my grandchildren of many years ago. My youngest is 17.
I’m an Ohio State football fan. My daughter graduated from Ohio State and followed footbal!! Now I am a college football fan. I will watch any Big10 game. To see who were going to play. I’m watching Iowa/Iowa State right now! And I like the Army/Navy game. My husband watched Nascar, He’s gone now and I’m alone and grateful to college football. Even had to have a big screen so I can really see the game!
At work all the women followed NFL team, so I decided to pick my team. I went with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. They haven’t disappointed me. I was a huge Taylor Swift fan before Travis Kelce was on my radar. Someone else to root for. And all the Ohio State previous players are fun to follow in the NFL. Believe me I’ve surprised my two daughters with my new hobby. Most of the seniors on my street are all Ohio State fans. Not my alma mater. Miami of Ohio doesn’t make it to tv channels. I
Got kinda wordy, my passion!
The placements are beautiful… any so many. How generous of Vicki to donate her time and talents to brighten someone’s day. Very thoughtful gesture.
That picture of the little girl with the goldfish crackers would make a great ad for the product.
We had frost warning overnight but, the temperatures didn’t get quite that low . We did cover our cucumber and tomato plants just in case. Fall definitely in the air.
Connie R – I should send it to the company! Her name is Isobel – goes to my church
I actually thought it was a real ad to click on before I noticed your description below the picture. What a cutie.
Beautiful placemats, Vicki! What a sweet thing to do & a great way to use up scraps! And Kathy, how wonderful for this gentleman to make & hand out bread he has made! Such an act of kindness!
It’s so generous of Vicki to make all the placemats. Our quilt group used to make them until we were told the facility that we donated to didn’t need any more. We may need to check with them to see if their needs have changed. Would be a good way to use up scraps. LOL!
We’re a University of Iowa family, so Go Hawks! But we also root for Iowa State and UNI when they aren’t playing Iowa.
The placemats are so creative and are sure to brighten every recipient’s day. Chicken pictures are the best and the corn looks fabulous. Our temp here is headed for 97 degrees today and the air quality is in the unhealthy range, probably smoke from fires that blows in and settles over the top of us. The college football games today will be hard for players and spectators alike. I bought a small axe yesterday to do some work in my yard but that is not going to happen today. I will wait a few days for temps to fall and the air to clear.
The card you posted is priceless. It must be a chromosome thing!
Sandy – yes, chromosome issue is correct
Mary I’m glad the surgery is now scheduled and you can plan ahead. Have they given you an idea how long you’ll be in the hospital or what to expect? Mr husband had a total hip replacement in February of 2023 and they anticipated that it may take longer than usual as it was a special situation. Before surgery started you give them your cell phone number and during the surgery they would text. “ the patient is doing well. “. The surgery was a little over 4 hrs. Now I don’t know what kind of message they would have sent if the patient wasn’t doing well. It did relieve a lot of immediate anxiety. You continue to be on my prayers.
Gosh darn it I missed the Fever game last night. I was talking to my sister in Texas and watching the Tiafoe/ Fritz semifinal of the Tennis open in New York. Francis Tiafoe is a local DC tennis player. It’s the first time he’s made it to the semifinals as was his American opponent. I was rooting for him. And he played so well until the last set. What a disappointment for him. He’s like a big teddy bear.
The placemats for Meals on Wheels is such a wonderful gift. I know I’d love receiving such a pretty surprise and enjoying it every day.
It just dropped to 60 degrees from this morning. They are predicting a 40 degree night here too. Brr.
I have no connection to any local College football teams but The University of Maryland, Virginia Tech, U VA, Navy would be the big ones to watch here. Those would all be Division 1 schools. I’m tickled to read our local high schools have added girls’ flag football to the roster of sports being offered at the high school. Just about a sport for everyone. Probably not table tennis , fencing or badminton though.
I’m still trying to catch some of the para-Olympics. It’s been harder as they don’t show as much.
I’ve got to find something to get me excited.
Enjoy the weekend.
Pat in Md
Pat – I need a sport to get excited about, too! The WNBA is almost done for the season
Am I right in assuming the Texas ‘winter’ scene is a cotton field? The only time I’ve ever seen one is when we drove from Nashville to New Orleans almost 5 years ago. Good times! Have a great weekend!
I love the placemats Vicki has generously made. The senior quilt group at a local recreation center where I volunteer has made them in the past with a goal of 200 for Meals on Wheels. To see them all stacked up was so fun just like seeing Vicki’s on the line. How much it brightens a shut ins day with a pretty placemat chokes me up. As does knowing how generous Patti’s quilt group is helping those less fortunate than others. Kindness matters for sure Mary. A man in a local town many years ago had signs printed up with those words to put in peoples lawns of those who showed kindness in deeds. He also bakes bread every day and hands out loafs from his trunk to people in the community where ever his car takes him that day.
Kathy – the guy who bakes bread and gives it away is on a mission of his own!
The man is teaching his grandkids to do the same thing as he does with baking. It’s a staple now when Chet’s around, a loaf of bread is going to be handed out. He was a teacher and last September I was at a fall festival and sat next to him while listening to some music and I loved all the students coming up to see him. He’s admired for more than just his bread which is such a gift. I’ll have to stop and get a picture of his signs in a yard some day for you.
Beautiful placemats Vicki. I”m sure the Meals on Wheels folks love receiving them. So kind and generous of you. I am currently reading The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth. and am enjoying it. Oh boy can I relate to the card at the end. We hav lived in our house for nearly 25 years and the kitchen wet up is exactly the same. I have moved nothing. I still get asked where things are. I guess it’s easier to ask rather than look. LOL. Thanks for the chuckle Mary!
We are an Iowa State family. Both of the kids and their significant others graduated from there. Hubby and I graduated from a smaller Missouri college. We don’t hear about them on tv. Love all the placemats. I learn so much from the comments. It sounds like butterfly needles are the way to go for me. Thanks so much. Hope all have a great day
I love college football! I hope the NCAA doesn’t mess up a good thing by allowing endorsements. I’m a Georgia Dawg fan. Woof! Woof!
