Let the games continue! 3-22-25

I’ve been busy sewing mundane projects that require little to no thinking so I can keep track of the games at the same time. But here are some great reader projects:

Remember when I bought this piece of antique needlework several years ago? I think it was a pillow cover because one side is brighter colors and the opposite side is very faded. I can see the seam of the pillow. This is actually the “inside” with the non-faded color. It needed to be framed between glass so both sides could be seen.

Here’s Hank’s dad, Stan, with it – he made the frame and hung it for me. It is simply wonderful and I see it from my chair in full view. I couldn’t be happier!

I’m the only one who walks in this hallway and I don’t hit my head – everyone else beware.

What a great way to display that pillowcase embroidery. Enjoyed all the quilts, especially those tomato pincushions. And those Hazel pictures! It looks like she has been helping you sew since she was a baby terrier. It was a sports weekend at our house, March madness & wrestling.

Des – March Madness! My favorite time of year – until this year. Caitlin and the WNBA will be back in May!

What a great post! Reader quilts inspire. The tomato pincushions are something special. The framed needlework is just what you hoped for. And dear Hazel! How could anyone resist her as a puppy!?! Love her personality now and shared antics. Thank you Mary for your blog about nothing except what matters!

Great ideas for charity quilts – simple, yet pleasing to the eye. Loved the first quilt pictured.
Planted some flowers this weekend, while the temps were nice. We’re looking at the 90’s this week. Too soon!!
March Madness hasn’t disappointed with some really exciting games. It can sure get one’s heart pumping.
I’m still rooting for two teams, although I don’t think they’ll get to the Elite Eight.
    Have a productive day.

I hope you are enjoying the games this weekend, Mary. The readers’ photos are wonderful projects. I really like the frame Hank’s dad made for your vintage quilt block.
It is rainy and dreary here today. I have had the ‘coughing virus’ twice in March. I am looking forward to feeling better in April.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

Jeanie – I feel bad for you if you’ve been coughing all this time! I think mine is finally gone. Very rainy here today.

Love, love, love that framed antique needlework piece!!!! Enjoyed all those beautiful quilts and pin cushions too. Baby Hazel looked liked a stuffed toy, she is still a cutie pie!

Suppose to be 80 here in sunny CA this week! Not ready for the heat yet.
Wishing all a Joy filled day!

Love the framed pillow cover – great way to showcase such beautiful artwork!

Love the then and now pics of Hazel – she’s just too cute! 🐶🐾

    Mary,
Happy Sunday to you and everyone. Cool day here in SE Michigan. Going to stick close to the television anyway!
Am putting together the backing for a small quilt. And making a few more cat kennel blankets from fleece fabric.
I too thought the earlier picture of Hazel was a toy! Her tail is so darling in that photo. She looks so innocent there! Lol
The reader quilts are so beautiful and I love the display of tomato pincushions. I think they would make the owner smile every time she sees them.
So nice to have your embroidery piece hung as you have it. Another thing that will make you smile.
Im off to watch the games now!! Go MSU!!! 🌻

Really nice photos today but my favorites are the star quilt, the pincushions-I love tomato pincushions and the photo of Hazel-she was such a cutie as a baby. It has been so warm and nice here this week but extremely windy. It is clearing out all the dead limbs caught in the tops of the trees from the hurricane last fall. We are under a burning ban. The governor announced that anyone burning would go to jail.
I had my oncologist and radiology oncologist appointments this week and was given my treatment options. I have to say, I don’t like the effects and possible side effects of either the pills offered or the radiation options. At age 72 if either doesn’t decrease my chances of breast cancer reoccurring within 10 years but by 1 or 2 percent, I’m not sure they’re worth the risks. I’m going to schedule an appointment with my regular Dr. to discuss with him as I have been with him for many years and really trust him. I know it is MY choice but I value others experiences and opinions.

    1. Deb in Idaho

Debbie, is your cancer breast cancer? I’m 74 and just finishing radiation therapy, it’s not fun but I have terrible side effects from the pills , so doing at least radiation is a chance for a longer life with my family

        1. Deb in Idaho

Sorry you have cancer and the funny thing is I had surgery on February 13, which is my birthday. I just wanted it done. Good luck to you .

    2. Judy

I had a lump removed and then had I think it was 36 radiation treatments, Monday through Fridays. The radiation doctor said that the newest treatments were with fewer treatments, but my insurance would not approve the newer treatments. (Chemo was not considered.). Radiation was not too bad. They told me what to expect and my daughter’s mother-in-law was a good one to talk to because she had recently been through the same diagnosis and treatment. That was 14 years ago. All is still good. I would at least recommend the radiation. You will probably find it more tolerable now. It seems that medicine has advanced greatly. The lump was diagnosed as ductile carcinoma in situ, stage zero. It showed up on my yearly mammogram. My friend was a receptionist in the surgeon’s office. She said it is rarely caught this early. Praise to the doctor who read the mammogram slides.

      1. Li

Judy, did you find that you got chilled or cold during the treatments, or did they go quickly enough that you did not notice any discomfort?

  9. Fran Dixon

Dogs age like humans. Way back when I was cute too I think! ha ha

Miss having a dog. The two zebra finches I have are enough at this stage of the game.

As always enjoyed your blog today. Great [ics.

What a great start to my day; gorgeous quilt show, the cutest pincushion display, genius solution to display your needlework piece and Hazel.
Thanks to all for sharing and to Mary for coordinating
    Enjoy the games

  11. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

I absolutely LOVE the framed pillow cover! What a great idea – two sided! I do enjoy your posts every morning. And I am looking for the pin cushion part to make some like in the picture you shared. They are adorable! Thank you for all you do to continue this blog Mary!

  12. Rita in Iowa

The quilt show is stunning, nice work. Mary the needlework and frame are perfect. Somebody made a lot of pincushions. Will you be able to fill them with pins? Love the pictures of Hazel, then and now.
Spent a little time outside yesterday doing some clean up work. Some of the leaves were still frozen in clumps where the sun hasn’t shined. Not much sewing happening right now.
    Have a good week.

  13. Sandy in Indiana

    Mary,

    Love the blog today!
Stan did a wonderful job on the frame and a perfect place to hang it! You will get lots of enjoyment from it!
Love that Hazel both then and now….such a cutie pie!

Interesting post. The first star quilt is clever. And colorful.
    The pincushions are cute.
And how nice to see the church donations too.
    Your readers are special!
Hank’s dad did a nice job for you on that original frame.I
    Enjoy March Madness!

It’s been a great week in Savannah with our daughter. We came to do the sites, and the weather has been so lovely. We managed to eat at some unique places and tour some wonderful museums. Yesterday we took a guided boat tour of the working harbor. I found it to be fascinating. Today we are headed home, first stop Mpls then onto Wisc. where its snowing in both places. Hopefully our plane makes it all the way. Hazel as a pup does look like a toy and so darn cute to this day. Good luck to those that are watching March Madness games.

Thanks for sharing your day with us Mary. Hi Hanks Dad and thank you for a nice frame for Mary to admire. It personalizes her home.
Lovely quilts and pincushions. Can’t believe time does fly this fast. I remember when Hazel came there.
We’re lucky in our town to have a technology school for teens to learn anything from auto mechanics to carpentry to child care, cosmetology to culinary arts to phlebotomy and nursing. Yesterday the school held their usual open house with local craft vendors and opportunities to utilize skills of the teens. Although I missed the time frame to have some colored streaks put in my hair ( ha ha) or a manicure, we did get lots of good baked goods and enjoyed a wonderful lunch for such reasonable costs. The Boston cream pie is so yummy and oniy $8 so we’ll be enjoying that all week. I’d wish I had bought Stromboli pies to freeze as they were oniy $4 each. Such a fun afternoon supporting the youth and sadly I didn’t find anything I wanted from the craft vendors except some mixes from Tastefully Simple.

Kathy – sounds like such a fun day. I tried to drive the wilderness trail yesterday on the cart and got stuck in the mud! I was able to get out before I had to call for help from Rick. He would have scolded me.

      1. Kathy in western NY

Mary – good thing you take your phone with you! And our golf carts take forever in back up due to their ages so it had to be stressful hoping you’d get unstuck. Where we dump twigs and leaves in the woods is still pretty grassy so he’s been fine so far. Next month it goes to camp again. Still don’t want to pay the money for a newer one.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I love my old cart so much that I’ll keep fixing it until parts are no longer available. But I really panicked when I got stuck!!!

  17. Teresa in Indiana

Hi Mary, I too thought Hazel as a pup was a stuffed toy! She is just too cute for words. What a nice quilt show today. Your readers are so talented. I get such inspiration seeing all these beauties! Thank you for sharing your blog. Enjoy the games. Your two-sided display is perfect!

      1. Hank's Mom

Yes she does!!! Attitude and is very insistent about throwing a stick!! But cute none the less. Hazel is even permitting a few brief playtimes with over the top Hank. That’s a change for Hazel.

Those tomato pincushions are a work of art. It’s obvious the creator loves making them.

  18. Brenda in Georgia

Love all the quilts.. Your display is unique! But the star of the show is Hazel to me. The puppy Hazel is the cutest thing I have ever seen. She looks like a stuffed animal, she is so perfect. What a doll! Thanks so much for such a beautiful post!

  19. Sandy

Hi Mary, fabulous pin cushions! Had sewing day with our quilt guild, stitching down periwinkle stars onto calico (saw an easy method on pininterest),just small quilt, but a pattern l have wanted to do for ages, but thought it was too hard for me.Windy day, but nice temperature. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Is the no 3 of 3 donation quilt rhe propeller quilt ??

    Sorry to show my ignorance.
I have imagined that Hazel was a larger dog from seeing the photos of her antics. So cute anyway.

Add my thanks for your blog. Hope it doesnt become a pain in the neck for you.

  21. Cindy K

Those pincushions are really neat. Great idea to frame the antique needlework so both sides are showing and lucky to have the perfect place to display it. Hazel is so cute-then and now. I get a kick out of her personality.

  22. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Boy oh boy was hazel a cutie as a little pup. I always enjoy the quilt show. Thanks for having your blog Mary. I always enjoy it.

There have been so many good games! My son and I are running a friends and family March Madness pool for the second year, and the trash talking is fun 😁 . Sadly, I think I’ll be knocked out of the Sweet 16.

  24. Sally in NV

Beautifully framed! Hazel what cute little thing! Mary, do you have a favorite team for March Madness?
