Off To Surgery – Finally! 11-17-24

Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday morning, November 19 and it can’t come soon enough for me. I have waited for this day for months and after being so deathly ill in July, the remainder of this waiting time I have felt fine – not sick at all and I told my surgeon that when I saw her last week. It just shocks me when I’m told I nearly died last summer.

I spent all day last Monday, all day last Tuesday and most of the day Thursday at Mayo having preop appointments and tests. I’ve had my share of CT scans!

So there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the tumor is actually shrinking! And if I absolutely didn’t/couldn’t have this surgery now, I could postpone it. The bad news is that they would want me to have these tests every 3 months to watch the tumor in the meantime.

NO WAY!!! Get this done now! I am so sick of living in limbo! She even hinted that since the tumor is shrinking it could possibly be benign. Holy Cow! Wouldn’t that be something?

So tomorrow afternoon Becky is taking me to Rochester and we’re staying across the street from the hospital at the Kahler Grand Hotel. We’re going to enjoy a great meal and a couple ice teas before my deadline and the next morning literally walk across the street to surgery. After surgery Becky will come home and each day I’m gone she’ll do chores and clean litter boxes in the house. Rick is in charge of the house and the dogs. Whew!!

I will be at Methodist Hospital for 3-5 days and then I’ll be back at the Kahler for 2 more nights before coming home. Sam is going to stay with me at the hotel.

Here’s a funny thought – packing to go to the hospital is not like packing for a week’s vacation. No need for makeup, jewelry, changes of clothes, toiletries, perfume. Haha!! My robe and favorite slippers, my phone, IPad and chargers, notebook, and my handled water cup – – that’s it!! When you’re in the hospital, they expect you to grab a glass with your hand around it and get it to your mouth as you’re laying in bed! Last summer I simply couldn’t do that – thus my handled insulated cup from Eric! It lives by me 24/7.

Today Rick is mowing leaves, I’m watering plants for the last time, Sam is coming out with Finn and Ivy for a little exercise and all is well! I’m taking my IPad along so I can let you know how things are going – hopefully I won’t be “out of it” for too long.

So that’s the story – I know you’re wishing me well and I’ll be back home by next week at this time – God willing.

P.S. Becky just called – she tested positive for COVID!! She was here on Friday to do chores with me but had a cold so we both wore masks and we basically stayed outside. Oh, I am just deflated – not only can she not take me but will they even let me have the surgery if I’ve been exposed to Covid???? I have no idea – I simply can’t wait another 6 months for this surgery – Mayo is so booked up – if they cancel my surgery, when will I ever get in? I have made so many arrangements!!! From chores, to groceries, to plants, to yard work – this simply can’t be happening. I’ll let you know what happens – at this point, I have no idea.

Mary, so glad to know you were able to have the surgery and will be on your way to recovery. Give yourself time and know that all your online friends will be rooting for and thinking of you.
I just finished piecing a tree block quilt which I hope to pin and quilt on my sewing machine in the next couple of weeks. Also finished a cactus flower table topper in Christmas colors…. next up, a Frozen panel quilt for my almost 4 year old granddaughter – she will love it. She lives in Colorado and will need the extra warmth in her toddler bed. Take care.

  2. Kris in WI

Prayers continue for healing, recovery, and the very best outcome.
Blessings to your care team at the hospital and friends who will be with you through the days ahead, both in Rochester and at home. Kris

What a relief to be done with the surgery! I was holding my breath all day; you must be so tired, Mary.
Thank you for taking the time to let us all know. I really appreciate it. Get lots of rest and mend.

  4. Jackie in NY

Oh Mary! I do hope you were able to have your surgery! I’m sure the rest of your plans will work themselves out and all will be fine. I’ll be praying that you recover quickly and that all of the tumor will be removed. 🙏❤️

  5. Li

It is at times like this when I look to Mary’s life example as she is always thinking, planning, moving, doing. Whether she is inspiring her congregation with wonderful music or looking out for cats, pups, and chicks I see a woman living in the moment wishing many of us well daily by sharing time around the farm. There will be many more quilts and projects to come. She has a lot of people helping her do her best.

    1. Kathy in western NY

Oh gosh Li, this is beautiful and well said. I hope Mary has read these words this morning to know we cherish all she is to each of us.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Li – oh, your words brought me almost to tears! You are being far too complimentary – I really do care about all of you and I’m interested in your lives – we are all more alike than different!

A big hug from me, and an extra prayer that you don’t have to delay surgery. Perhaps they want a Covid test beforehand?

I know you will receive many comments like mine, but know we all care about you. You will be in our hearts and throughts and prayers throughout this surgery and the recovery experience. I’m a positive thinker so when I wake up in the morning, it already IS a great day. Some parts of my body may not agree, but they are not in charge of my attitude. Many days are even greater than others. As each day passes and you are healing, your days will become greater too.

  19. Donna

Hope you still have your surgery tomorrow. I know you have wanted to get it over with. It’s terrible Becky can’t be there for you. Praying all goes as planned.

  20. Sue Bowers

Mary, I thought your story was going well until the last paragraph. Yikes! No idea what the protocol is for Covid these days. Hopefully Becky has a mild case & a speedy recovery. Wishing you well too. Hopefully you can soon put all of this behind you. Sending you hugs & prayers.

  21. NancyTD

I pray for Rick and all your pets.

  26. Sharon G.

Mary – I guess you will know tomorrow after you call Mayo to find out your options. I guess it will depend on Mayo’s protocol regarding exposure to Covid in the last 14 days. Was a Covid test part of your pre-op? If so, were your Covid test results negative?
So very sorry this has happened to Becky and you at the 11th hour. Don’t give up.
    I’m thinking of you.
Sending a hug and prayers to you and Becky.

    Take care everyone.

  27. patti

mary, everything will be fine. it will be as God wills and will be what is best. i believe they will let you have the surgery and that you will get through it just fine. i’m sorry that becky has come down with covid – hope she heals quickly. you are a strong woman and you will be fine. i’m so glad the tumor is shrinking, but totally agree with getting it over with now. this is just a glitch.
make sure you take a book or two to read (or more, it’s why i love my kindle – lots of books). it gets so boring in the hospital. especially when you feel like you should be able to go home. i’m never a good patient but will advise you to be a good patient. it will go quicker and easier that way.
the animals will be fine. they may be confused but they will be so glad to see you again. be sure to give them big hugs before you leave. rick is a big boy and will survive also.
we will be here waiting for you, praying for you and your surgeons. it will be well. faith is amazing and so is prayer. you know this. now is the time to ‘let go and let God’. it’s a hard thing to do. gentle hugs, patti in florida

  28. Tanya T. in Houston

Sending prayers and good wishes for you and Becky and Sam and Rick and the surgeons and nurses. Hopefully, this will go as planned and you can be home recovering soon! Just plan a couple of quilts in your head while you lie there! You are truly covered in thoughts of many all over the world!

  29. Lynne from NJ

The best laid plans …. So frustrating for you. Hopefully you don’t have covid and can have the surgery as planned. Sending positive thoughts your way.

  30. Brenda in Georgia

What a series of events. You must feel like a tornado has hit you. I hope someone can take Becky’s place and all can go as planned. You are so strong and patient. I would have been in a tizzy having to wait for 6 months. All of us who care about you are holding you in our hearts. Best wishes for a quick recovery for Becky!

  31. Jill Klop

Oh Mary! I’m so sorry that Becky is sick! I pray you’ll be fine and they’ll do your surgery!!

  32. Dee

Prayers and many good thoughts are coming your way! I have not sent messages much lately but read your posts faithfully. I hope that everything works out for the best concerning the Covid exposure and your surgery plans. Yes, a benign result would be wonderful!!! Will be thinking of you a lot.

  33. Sharon F

Mary, I know you must feel flustered and upset with this latest monkey wrench in the works. Like every one else, I’m thinking of you and hoping that it will all work out, and you won’t need to wait another 6 months for the surgery. I hope Becky isn’t too sick and will be well soon. Keeping both of you in my thoughts.

  34. Elizabeth P McDonald

Prayers and Good Thoughts! I hope that you are able to go ahead, but if they tell you “no” rest assured that they have good medical reasons for that decision. My fingers are crossed — for the surgery and also for your medical safety.

  35. Sandy

I have great faith that your surgery will go as planned. Good news that the tumor is shrinking. They will probably do a COVID test as a precaution. My last two abdominal procedures had no restrictions on eating/drinking or prep beforehand except to follow the cut off time. They want an empty stomach in case of vomiting. They want to avoid aspiration or any ruptures at the surgery site. Your medical professionals are well trained and only want the best outcome.
Hopefully Becky recovers quickly. As much as we like to think we are in control and well planned, this just shows that there is a much, much bigger scenario in place. Just trust.

  36. Debra L Reber

So glad to hear that the tumor is shrinking! I’m praying for you & hoping everything can go on as planned.

  37. Ginger S

I was reading along and feeling so happy that you had this all planned out and then I read that darn PS. For crying out loud are things ever easy? I hope Becky won’t be too sick and has a speedy recovery from COVID. Fingers crossed that Tuesday is still a go for you. Happy to read that the tumor is shrinking…that ,at least is ,good news. .

  38. Colleen in Central Oregon

Mary, I’m sure they will just do a rapid test on you, find it negative, and go ahead with your surgery. Prayers for you and Becky.

  39. Jeanine from SE iowa

    Mary,
You and Rick and all your helpers are in my prayers. I am so hopeful that your surgery will not be postponed and that you can get this behind you. Be Still and know that I am God. Ps. 46:10
    He cares for you.

  40. Kathy in western NY

I’m hoping this will be behind you soon. And prayers for poor Becky for a speedy recovery from that nasty virus. My husband didn’t catch it when he was outside fixing a man’s golf cart with him only to learn the next day the man tested positive and was ill. You’ll be up and around before you know it. Stay positive as it’s a good sign the tumor is shrinking.

  41. Beryl BC

Prayers for all, you, Becky, Rick, your medical team, the animals, and others. That’s great news to hear the tumor is shrinking.

  42. Lora

Hope everything goes great on Tuesday and you have a fast and uneventful recovery. Sending you lots of prayers and healthy vibes!

  43. Lynette in Orlando

As a nurse, I’d say you both wore a mask and you were outside odds are you are fine. I will pray that you are and you can have your surgery and put this behind you. Praying all goes well and according to plan. I sure wish I lived closer, I’d be happy to give you a hand.

  44. Carol in Spokane

Oh Mary, i am so sorry that you have had this glitch in your plans to get to the hospital. And that Becky is sick. I pray for you and her and that everything will work out to get this surgery behind you! There are so many praying for you! I know it will work out somehow.

  45. Martha W in WY

Me again! I’m catching up on my blog reading. Traveling through time zones put a crimp in my biological clock. I think your “Hazel’s Busy Day” should become a children’s book. It would make a wonderful story with a little fine tuning.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – my dream is to write children’s books but I don’t want to market them so…..

  46. brenda morton-butler

Oh my i hope everything with the surgery goes well. I look forward to news that all is well and the surgery is a success.

  47. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

Mary, cheering you on from the Netherlands, and wishing and hoping that all goes well, in spite of the Becky setback (and hoping she is better soon too). It is great news that your tumour is shrinking. So fingers crossed for a successful go ahead with the surgery and with the result! Team Mary has your back!

  48. Martha W in WY

Grrrrrrr…..! I know this is so frustrating for you. I think you’ll be ok for surgery. My nurse daughter said even if + they will more than likely do the surgery. She said most facilities don’t even test pre-op patients anymore. Sending a BIG HUG to you from Iceland.

  49. Danette

Mary- My prayers are with you. It is my prayer that the surgery goes on but if it doesn’t then you will have peace of mind. So glad to hear the tumor is shrinking!

  50. Michelle

OMG is right!! Take a deep breath & everything will be ok! My thoughts & prayers are with you. I know you are going to do great with surgery ! My thoughts are with Becky too. May she recover quickly.

  51. Susy Boyer

    Dear Mary,
You have done all the right things getting ready for Surgery Day. I’m crossing all my fingers and toes for you. This is going to happen for you. I hope you can pivot and another wonderful friend can take you and be with you. Hang in there baby it’s going to work out. Your surgery will go well, and that dang tumor will be benign and removed.
Sending love and hugs… I’ll be looking up at the stars and thinking of you. Kisses too!
    Susy from San Diego, CA

  54. Jo in Wyoming

OMG, what more will you have to go through? I hope Becky has a quick recovery.
If you haven’t tested positive, we all pray you will have surgery as planned.
If we all lived within 100 miles, we’d have everything covered for you.

Did you include a book in your packing list? Put a tag on the extensions cord with your name.
It will all go well. You have a very positive attitude, that’s 90% of success.

  56. Barbara Firesheets

Oh Mary! I will be praying that you will be able to have your surgery as scheduled, praying for your doctor, and the best possible results for your speedy recovery. Praying for Becky as well. 🙏🙏🙏

  57. Jeanie S, Central ILm

The news about your tumor shrinking is great to hear! Since you and Becky were outdoors and wore masks, you were probably not exposed. I know you are so very ready to have this behind you. I am praying all goes as scheduled. Love you , Mary. Keep us in the loop, only if you feel like it. 🥰🙏

  58. Carmen

I hope you get to have the surgery after everything you have gone thru! You know we love you and are all praying for you! Good Luck!

  59. Fran Dixon

    Prayers Mary.
Here are my thoughts for whatever they are worth. Give it to God. If it’s meant to be it will happen. If not, there might be another reason why it is not happening. I am praying for you. Wishing you the very best.

  60. Sandy in Indiana

Oh Mary, so sorry to hear this news and the news about Becky…hope she has a speedy recovery.
Sending love & hugs to both of you.
Hope that your surgery goes well and according to schedule….you have been through so much waiting for this day. Wonderful news to hear that the tumor is shrinking.
Everyone is thinking of you & sending you love & good wishes that it goes off as scheduled & you have a speedy recovery.
    Sandy in Indiana

  61. Holly in Two Harbors

To have this all thrown up in the air at the last minute is so devastating I have no words. I’ve done all this at Mayo and know just what you’re talking about with tests and waiting to get it over with. I can’t even express how bad I feel for you dealing with this. I hope it all gets straightened out, but the stress has to be terrible. I’m so sorry!

  62. Marty from Scottsdale

Oh Mary! I’m so excited for you that your surgery is set for Tuesday and not the day before Thanksgiving. You have had to wait all these months, but now Covid raises its ugly head! Can you believe it? Hope Becky doesn’t get too sick from it and that your surgery goes as planned. My prayers are with you! God is great!

  63. Candy

Wow, Mary, that’s a lot to take in! I hope you can get things re-arranged and that your surgery can go ahead. Good news about the tumor shrinking and the possibility of it being benign … fingers crossed! We’ll all be waiting for a positive update when you’re feeling up to it. Good luck with everything, and wishing you a quick recovery. I hope Becky recovers from Covid soon. I think you deserve an iced tea today (if you’re allowed), and some dog pets and kitty cuddles!

  64. Vickie from Texas

Nothing in life seems easy! What a predicament. I think if you don’t have any signs of Covid or temperature on the 19th they will still take you for surgery. I don’t blame you, I would want to get it over with too. Hopefully, all will go well and it will be behind you. Prayers for a great outcome!!!!!

  65. Vicki in Seattle

    “TEAM MARY!”
You are the captain and we are all here to cheer you on during the ups and downs.

  66. Meredith in Cincinnati

I completely understand how ready you are to get this surgery in the rear view mirror. We’re all waiting for the updates, and praying for your surgeon and you. Hope Becky’s Covid is just a bump in this long, long road.

  67. Rosalie in Texas

Dear Mary, praying that surgery will proceed. As for the diet ahead of abdominal surgery, if the bowel is not being operated on, there is no need for a change in diet. And I’m sure the surgeon has a clear idea of where the tumor is and what is involved since all those ct scans will be looked at.
Thankfully you and Becky were outside and extra precautions of mask. With Covid so prevalent it is likely there are people at church, grocery and hotel as well as hospital who have Covid and don’t know it yet.
    Prayers continue.
    Be still.

  68. Denise

Oh Mary, so sorry to hear this, trust all works out well for you.
    As they say,
“The best laid plans of mice and men oft’ go awry”, from poem by Robert Burns

  69. Rita in Iowa

Mary I was glad to hear that your surgery was soon and then the zinger of Becky having COVID. Why can’t things go the way they are supposed to go?
I know you were busy trying to have all your ducks in a row. Keep the faith and be still as it will all work out. In my thoughts and prayers Mary.

  70. Jan P

    Hi Mary,
All good positive thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and your pets! I know you will keep all of us in the loop! We all love you, Mary!

  71. Sue in PA

Mary, I hope you will still be able to have your surgery on Tuesday and am praying for a good outcome. I agree with Pam, though, that you should double check your pre-op instructions. It seems odd to me that you would be able to have a full meal the evening before abdominal surgery.
I know you will be so happy to have this all over with. The waiting must have been so very difficult for you.

  72. Sandy

Hi Mary, fingers crossed you don’t have covid! And the surgery goes ahead, you will be in my prayers, take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  73. Jean Elliott

Oh my.. I hope you’re able to keep your surgery date. And I hope that Becky doesn’t look too sick with Covid. One thing I was going to say …take an extension cord for your charger. I took one when I had my cancer surgery and boy I was glad I did because my charger would not reach the plug-in in my hospital room and I was there for three weeks. So I used the extension cord all the time.
I will add you to my prayer list!

  74. Linda

Mary, I follow your blog and am sad to read of your new surgery update. However, this is wonderful news about the tumor prognosis. You are in my thoughts as you progress on this long awaited journey.

  75. Beth T.

Oh my word. Well, it is what it is. If you do have to postpone–which I hope you won’t, but fear you might–at least you have the comfort of the news of the tumor shrinking. And I imagine they will put you on a waiting list, for when the next person has a Covid incident and must cancel and they can pop you into their slot, right? Be chummy with the scheduler, who likely has a lot of power! So sorry for this added and unwelcome stress, and for Becky’s misfortune.

  76. Angie from Baltimore

Mary, I only hope that they test you for COVID And it’s negative. What a gut punch. All the build up the pre test and then this. I pray it can still be done as you don’t want this hanging over you. I only wish any of us lived close enough to take you we feel helpless but now is the time to call in favors. I will still keep praying but adding an additional for you
    Keep us informed

    1. Mary H

Good grief, Mary. I think it will all go fine for you. It’s annoying when you have made a plan and it goes awry. Prayers for you, Becky and Rick. Be a good patient!

  77. Viv in Idaho

Mary – after the long wait and all the planning and preparing you have done I hope your surgery will go on as planned. Wishing you the very best outcome. I hope all of the hard physical work you had done while you have been waiting will help you have a fast and easier recovery!

  78. Ann S.

Oh Mary, there l was, reading along, smiling, praying, happy for you, and then…l came to the PS. I am so sorry to read about Becky and the Covid situation you are in. The RN in me says they will more than likely cancel your surgery but the person in me is hoping and praying it will proceed. Safety first is what it comes down to!! I am going to keep smiling and praying because l know it will all work out for the best. Keeping both you and Becky in my thoughts and prayers.

  79. Cindy from Minnesota

Mary…take a quick Covid test. I doubt you have it if you wore masks and were outside, and a distance apart. You no doubt can find someone to take you to the Kohler Hotel. I suspect people who fly in maybe alone the night before surgery so you can handle this. Perhap your friend Sam can step in for Becky. Having the surgery is going to take a big weight off of you. I hope all goes well. Keep your plans. I am sending hugs to you over the miles that all goes as planned. You certainly live a life that never has a dull moment, for sure.

  80. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, many prayers are with you, your family, friends and medical staff. Your loving support group will be with you during every step of the way.💙🙏🏻💙

  81. Charlotte

Mary, first, I am giving thanks to our Lord, the Great Physician, for the shrinking of your tumor. And I am lifting you in prayer for a successful surgery, for an easy recovery, and for God’s hands and wisdom to guide the surgeon and all your caregivers. Amen

  82. Lynnh

Dear Mary, so sorry to hear about the Covid SNAFU!!! I pray you will be able to have your surgery and that all will work out for the best!!
    Lynn

  83. Pam

    Hi Mary,
So sorry to hear about Becky! Usually with any kind of abdominal or intestinal surgery they want you to be on clear liquids before the surgery and sometimes even do a bowel prep that consists of taking the sort of stuff you take before a colonoscopy. Not sure if your doctor ordered any of that or not but you may want to check the instructions that they sent you to see. I hope your surgery goes forward and you get this behind you!

  84. Charlotte in No. California

Mary, praying that the surgery will be done on Tuesday. You have been through so much this year and waiting is so hard.

  85. Pat Smith

Oh my gosh! I just can’t believe this chain of events! After all this time and all these plans, to have Becky test positive for Covid? Lots of prayers that your surgery can go on anyway. Sorry I don’t live anywhere near Iowa or I’d drive over and take you myself. Hoping and praying for the best…

  86. Carolyn Boutilier

Oh my, Praying they let you have the surgery and get it over with. So glad to hear the tumor is shrinking. I will be praying for you. Lots of Hugs.
    Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va.

  87. Mary Beth in Missouri

Oh, Mary! I was so excited for you. I feel for Becky. I’m sure she’s so very sorry. Praying you will not test positive and can continue with your surgery Tuesday. On a positive note, it’s wonderful news the tumor appears to be shrinking.

  88. Patricia

Lordy, Lordy Mary. I can’t believe the news about Becky. I have no idea what Mayo will do. I feel so badly for you.
The amazing thing is the tumor is shrinking. That’s remarkable. I’m also shocked that you almost died just from the biopsy.
I just don’t know what to think. You had everything planned and organized. I’ll be waiting for you to let us know this outcome. Maybe there is a reason for all of this – maybe that tumor will keep shrinking. I know the feeling of just wanting to get it over with.
I’m praying for the best conclusion to this dilemma. Perhaps you’d already be symptomatic by now if you were going to get it. Do you have a COVID test you can take now?
Many prayers. I’m distressed for you.

I was excited about your surgery day and the planning associated with driver, stays, help, etc. Then the downer at the end. Let us know what happens.

This post was like a roller coaster up with good news and then down with the unknown. Praying you will be able to move forward with the surgery and that you are blessed with a quick and complete recovery.

I read a study that said they knew of no one who had contracted Covid from another person while outdoors. Hopefully that will be recognized by the people at Mayo. If not, remember God has a plan for your life. We don’t always understand it, but that is the truth. I will be praying for God’s will in the matter. If you read the Mitford series of books, you will know that Father Tim says that is the prayer that never fails.

Janet, I love the Father Tim books!

Mary, my prayers are with you.

A friend of mine in the community had Covid and was scheduled for a test at Mayo in AZ. They told her as long as she could breathe on her own, they would perform the anesthesia and the test.

Every surgeon is different with pre-op instructions. When I had my left ovary removed, I had to cleanse my bowels like a colonoscopy. Was not constipated after surgery .

When my mom had part of her bowel removed due to cancer at Mayo in Rochester, she did NOT have to cleanse her bowels. Easier for her pre-op, but post-op was difficult with constipation.

Probably too much info, but that has been my experience.

Mary – After all you’ve been through, I hate to hear that there might be a glitch! Many good thoughts and lots of prayers that it will be straightened out the way you had hoped.!
