Pets, Plants and BASKETBALL! 9-18-25

The Fever are going to the semifinals! I hate to say I didn’t have faith in them but I did not expect them to win tonight. I’ll bet Caitlin is relieved her injury didn’t cost them this opportunity.

So….I’ll start with pets.

Greta, Miss Photogenic, is the star.

Can you see her? Yes, this is the same tree she spent 4 days and 3 nights in.
Such a great cat
Look at that puppy sit!
Hot!
Rain clouds to the west
Heading home since we couldn’t find the snake

BUT – look what we did find in the yard! A snapping turtle!! I put him in the golf cart even though he was hissing and snapping and took him to the pond.

And away he goes – we don’t need him for Hazel to get interested in!!

On our way to the field we saw a dead raccoon by the trail – the dogs weren’t even in the grove late last night so I have no idea where this guy came from. No picture – ugh.

This is Connie’s Dot – her eyes match the leaves behind her! And check out that black nose!

Here’s Connie’s monstera which lives outside thru the summer and then back to the house. It is gorgeous!!!!

Morning Glories all the way to the top of the pole!!!

And my surprise in the mail – a new plant – a Hindu Rope Hoya from an old friend named Ursula from Utah.

I planted my new Hoya in a clear pot so I can watch the roots grow. Thank you so much, Ursula!

Reader quilts

From Becky – I made the quilt entirely from brushed cotton
And a mystery bowl- I paid .50 awhile ago and as I was washing it up from a plant I noticed the inscription inside.
Anyone know Barb Chisholm? Wouldn’t it be funny if she were a reader? She made this 50 years ago.

I have a book to recommend – or at least tell you about and you can decide if you want to look into it.

This story is written in first person by a young woman in a coma – the question is “if I stay” or “if I leave” and I found myself wondering what I would do if it were me in the coma. Very thought provoking!!

Whew – that’s more than I thought happened today. Just one more funny!

Mary–That morning glory reminded me of Jack and the Bean Stalk. Watch out for giants!
Love the autumn decorations. It must be time for me to dig out the scarecrows for the living room and kitchen…and put away the Christmas trims that have been sitting on the cutting table since last year.
We have lovely hills here in SC WI, but those wide Iowa skies really show off the sky.
So many plants to admire. I have so little light in the house I would need something like your grow lights to keep anything green alive. Sigh.
The stars quilt looks so cozy. Is it naptime?
Thanks again, everyone, for the pictures and to Mary for keeping the blog about everything up and running. Kris in WI. Prayers continue.

Really enjoyed your blog today Mary. Quilts, animals and plants…love them all. We just closed up our camp in Maine for the winter. Bittersweet. It was a pretty drive, the leaves are just starting to turn. I LOVE fall. My favorite season. Your morning glory is amazing. Really dresses up that pole.

Ginger – morning glory vine is glorious until I have to get those dead vines down! I have never seen it this big!

Love Connie’s plant & her kitty! Such beautiful quilts & plants, too. Thank goodness you were with Hazel when she spotted the snapping turtle! That might not have ended well! Love seeing her sitting in that tub of water to cool off! Today I took 4 boxes & bags of fabric, poly batting, & miscellaneous items to the lady who makes donation quilts. She was thrilled to get the items since they rely solely on donations. She told me they made 125 quilts this year to be donated. I’m so impressed with what they accomplish! I’m finally down to about 6 boxes of fabric & projects to go through in my sunroom/ sewing room. Now the challenge will be to keep it somewhat neat!

It was wonderful seeing pictures of Greta and Dot; they are both beautiful! Your outdoor pictures of the pets, flowers and clouds are all lovely, what an amazing day!
We returned home today after two weeks in a great Michigan campground. During our time there, lots of color popped out on the trees.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

We had a turtle once, many years ago. It left for 2 years and came back. A year later it left for good.
The quilts and flowers are great today. I always enjoy seeing the pictures. Thanks, Mary.

I loved all the photos today, especially all the animals and quilts. Thanks so much for such a pleasure!

Greta and Dot, such beautiful kitties. Pretty quilts today too. Mary, it was nice of you to rescue the turtle from Hazel and move it to the pond. Probably disappointed Hazel though.
I think we’re having the last few glorious days of summer before fall shows up next week.

Had a good laugh last evening. My daughter & her husband are managers in a health food store in Asheville, NC. They went to a seminar yesterday that organic venders were presenting their products and giving samples away. One was a ” grass-fed organic gelatin.” I had no idea you fed jello grass, let alone organic grass!!!!! Hahaha

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – I looked up the founder – JoAnn Barr – and sure enough the gelatin is a real thing – I’m glad I don’t have to be that healthy!

Hindu Rope Hoya! I had this plant many years ago, given to me by my mother. I moved across the country and had to leave it behind, and I’ve been sad that I couldn’t find the name of it. Thank you for all the pictures, but especially for this one!

Connie’s cat is so pretty with her coloring.
I’m glad Theresa is enjoying her new home and it looks so peaceful with the trees. Your posts have contained so much lately that we all love about your readers connections. It’s good to read you are out on your golf cart checking around and getting the fresh air.
I have a question for Alice in Ohio and Diane too in Ohio who works on Quilts of Valor. A gentleman stopped by our campsite yesterday while I was sewing a binding on a lap quilt and was saying he wished he had a quilt of valor as he knew others who got them in AZ while he was visiting over last winter. He and his son both served so I wondered if I could make them myself or do I go through our local chapter to get actual certification as I don’t know the proper procedures.

Kathy, usually a veteran is nominated for a QOV quilt. I know when I made one for my friend Ron I filled out a paper why I was nominating him for a QOV. At that time I belonged to the quilt guild in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also at that time they had a ceremony in July & a number of veterans were recognized for their service & presented a quilt. I made Ron’s quilt + another to be donated. If you don’t belong to a guild, I would contact the local Veterans chapter. I’ve personally made 4 QOV quilts. First one was for my son who retired after 23 yrs with the Army National Guard. Maybe Diane has more info than I do. It’s such a wonderful way to honor our veterans!

      1. Kathy in western NY

Thanks so much Alice for answering my questions. I will connect with this gentleman and get his service information. I know of a group that meets to make honor flight quilts so maybe they also have whom I can connect with once I have his details. Thanks again Alice for providing me with these answers. I appreciate it.

        1. Alice in SW OH

Kathy, I just Googled QOV information & you or he can print out the form & submit it with all his military information. It’s my understanding that once that’s submitted they will be put on the list to receive a QOV quilt along with the ceremony that goes with the presentation. If I can help you or him with anymore information I will be happy to. 🇺🇸

Thank God, no snakes! Big or small I hate them all🤭 Loving all the fall quilts and decor. It’s my favorite time of the year to decorate. I love how all your animals appear to get along with each other. We have two dogs and a cat that walk around the block with their master. It is so cute to see.
I just checked out the book from the library, if I stay. It looks like a read that I’ll really like.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Terri – when you finish the book, will you leave a short report in the comments? It really stuck with me.

Snakes! When we moved to the country in 92 ditches would be full of water ,we had snakes and salamandes all the time. Kids would always catch the salamanders. Not a fan of snakes. Connie your plant looks huge and beautiful. Cute kitty, we just lost our cat Stella so grandkids are waiting for me to get another already. Love the brushed cotton quilt. I wish when I see a quilt I could start working on it right away, I’ll never get all the quilt pictures I saved on my phone made oh well It’s fun to dream.

  14. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Great pictures today. I loved Becky’s quilt. Of course you made it, what a beautiful design. Simple but surprisingly different. Almost looked like it was made from men’s shirts. I love star quilts.
Connie’s cat is cute and her plant is spectacular!!
    Glad the Fever won!!!

What a tremendous treat the blog about nothing was today! Plants, quilts, cats and Hazel & Keeper too. All of my favorite things in one place. Thank you so much Mary for always giving me something to smile about to start my day. This week I’ll finish canning tomatoes from my garden then the only thing left to do is applesauce. It is so very dry here in PA. I can’t remember the last time it rained. Grass is brown & crunchy & trees are turning brown too. That snapping turtle looked fierce. Were the dogs interested in investigating it?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Des – yes, of course Hazel got right up in that turtle’s face and I had to yell at her. I used to can a lot but we eat differently these days and if I remember correctly I don’t even like applesauce much. Haha! Thanks for the compliment – I like to drink my coffee and enjoy your company, too!

Mary what a great blog today! It was wonderful to hear news of Connie! Yep she has a green thumb just like you. I loved Becky’s quilt. Simple yet a feast to the eye. Hope you are on the mend and gradually returning to normal. Good health is such a gift. I never realized that when I was young.

Glad to know the Fever won their game tonight. Unfortunately I missed it. The game before tonight’s game was so fun to watch-they played really well. Hope I’m able to watch their next game.
Nice fall photos tonight. Reminds me that it’s time to decorate the porch.
