Pumpkin Varieties, 9-27-22

This is the page in the Territorial Seed Company catalog that I ordered from. I also ordered the green pumpkin seeds and white pumpkin seeds from Park Seed and Gurneys.

Three sizes are usually offered by grams. Some have 3 seeds per gram and the small packet has 3 grams – 9 seeds and that’s all so that’s probably only 2 or 3 hills of that variety. I did not order any large pumpkin seed because I knew I couldn’t lift them and I am not interested in carving a JackOLantern only decorating.

Growing pumpkins isn’t rocket science BUT most anything grows in our rich black soil so we’re lucky.

Mollie came yesterday for a play date with Keeper.

See why I grabbed this free old lady couch? I took it for the dogs.

Connie’s Lily helping her bind – a cat’s presence is required.

You’re beautiful, Lily!

    Good Morning Mary
Just wanted to thank you for listing the pumpkin types. I will order some for next year. Happy Fall. This is my favorite time of the year.

I love Mary D’s bench pillow, but can’t imagine how long it took to applique all those elements. I will admire it and know that some people are highly skilled, but I won’t tackle something that big.

And I love how Connie’s cat keeps her company as she binds. Our cat used to do the same. Whenever I had to shift the quilt to get to the new location for binding, I would have to shift the cat.

ABC Good Morning America had a segment on pumpkins this morning and it made me think of all your pumpkins. Good luck to everyone who plants next year!

Pumpkins and pillows and pups….oh my! Love seeing Keeper with Mollie, his little paw on her back. It looks like Connie may be busy making project bags for her cross stitch as well as quilting. It looks like a stack of them in the background of her picture of Lilly and the quilt. Love all of the pumpkins Mary.

Cats and quilts always go together! I absolutely love those varieties of pumpkins. Those are the kind I choose to decorate with also.

Thank you for showing the seeds you ordered. Growing pumpkins isn’t rocket science but your black rich soil is what we need!!. We add lots of chicken poop, steer manure, and then fertilize with organic fertilizer each week. We have a lot of decomposed granite and need as much ‘good stuff’ as possible.
Oh Mary, something awful happened to our sweet 7 1/2yo lab. In August, we had a lump tested for cancer. Just fatty tissue and we were so happy. Over the weekend, her tummy looked bloated. She acted like herself so we thought we had better cut back on how much we feed. The next day she had a seizure and 2 minutes later another and passed away. The vet said it’s bloat and usually happens to dogs with deep chests. If caught early, only 40% survive. I know you and many others know the pain of losing a loved pet. I’m trying not to think of it but all night I kept waking and thinking of my sweet girl. There just has to be our sweet pets heaven.

Patty!!! How horrible – every dog owner should be aware of this. I don’t know about it! What is bloat and what causes it? I am so sorry – you sound like me – I lay awake at night and think about my animals that have died and what I could have done differently and why, why, why!!! She was young and I know how sharp the pain is right now even though this happened in August – you’ve spent a good month grieving already. Oh, so sad. I am so sorry and only another dog lover can truly understand. You have lost a close member of your family. So sad.

Mary D…If you come back and read this….Your pillow is adorable!! I love all the fall-feeling photos lately. It has inspired me to get out my fall decor and decorate. I must admit I haven’t been very good about doing it these past years but this year I have been. Feels good. Quilts and quilty things are especially important to use in a home as the seasons change. Mary…you are So good at it. Hope you are better today.

  8. Diane, Squeak, and Buddy

HI Mary, Thanks so much for the listings for the seeds. I get some for our son in law for his stocking every year, but the craft show place did not have pumpkin seeds. Too early?
I love seeing Keeper, Telly, and of course, Hazel and all the kitties. I used to put a piece of paper that said “Inspected by Pyramus or Thisbee or Socrates or Spike or Squeak” in with my quilt gifts. I had forgotten about that so I’ll have to start doing it again. Buddy also loves to “help” me with the quilts.
Our neighbors drove to The Villages yesterday with their little Yorkie, Tucker. I was worried, but they made it and now it looks like it might not be so bad there. I hope they will be ok. Stay safe Florida residents.

Loved the pumpkin varieties, what a spectacular picture! While I was in Florida for my daughter’s wedding , my quilt book arrived ! Thanks so much 🙂 By the way , all the girls in the bridal party loved their beach bags that I made for them . I also love seeing pictures of our quilting friends with their quilts 🙂

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Chris in Alaska – I guess I didn’t realize the wedding was right around the corner – glad they liked their bags. Did you enjoy the beach? How long a flight for you?

      1. Chris in Alaska

Oh my – too long a flight . Had 12 hour layovers both there and back . I’m too old for that 😆 Took my knitting and watched the movie Togo about the Iditarod. Great movie about dogs if you haven’t seen it , Mary . Glad to be home . Thanks for asking !

Fun blog today. Well, always something fun in every blog.
I went to jail this morning. They are keeping 3 week old kittens. Someone abandoned them on the road, so the inmates are feeding and caregivers till they are old enough to be adopted. They will have a kitty to help them bind.
Mary, I think it might be your turn to go to Mayo. Get to a pulmonary specialist and get that coughing fixed. Losing you, the blog and farm fun is not an option!!!

I’ve been enjoying your pumpkin pictures. So many varieties and colors.
The pillow is perfect for fall. So much fun.
Kitty and puppy pictures are always enjoyed.
My kitty Klaus helps me bind quilts. He lays under them as I stitch. He likes being under quilts. I’m working on finishing two sampler quilts. He sleeps on one while I quilt on the other. I’m almost finished with them.
I had a rotary cutter accident Sunday. I had to go to urgent care for 4 stitches in my left index finger. So everyone take extra care with those sharp tools!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – no! 4 stitches!!! I can almost feel how it happened – your left index finger hanging over the edge of the ruler, right? Oh, I am so sorry – I’ll bet it’s throbbing!

      1. Susan K in Texas

I was cutting batting to fit a piece of cardboard. The rotary cutter jumped over and there was my poor finger! Not to over share but it left a divot in my finger that wouldn’t stop bleeding. My finger won’t be rounded anymore. And yes it’s throbbing. They used plastic stitches so I can get it wet. You don’t realize how often you wash your hands until something like this happens.

I loved seeing Keeper and Mollie lounging on the dog sofa-so cute! It’s nice he has an energetic friend for play dates.
We are out with our camper having a good time, but I am looking forward to fall decorating when we return home next week. I have been cutting fabric at the picnic table.
Take care, Mary. I hope you feel better soon. 🥰

  13. Chris in Alaska

Oh Mary , forgot to tell you that on one of my flights home from FL , I sat next to a couple going on an Alaskan cruise from Seattle . Long story short , she is a quilter ! She was excited to learn that in my small town we have a very active quilting guild !
