It began raining again in the night and kept on til mid afternoon – my poor succulents and cactus! They are soggy and will likely die of root rot at this rate. So you know I couldn’t mow either. I spent most of the day in the porch while it rained until this evening when I decided to work on Dove In the Window.
I took it apart where it was wrong – I just couldn’t leave it that way.

And I decided to do mitered corners just so I wouldn’t forget how.

These pictures are from Cynthia’s garden tour with quilts. I hope she’ll tell you more about it in the comments.

Scenes from the porch today

I’m guessing Keeper and Three were recovering from hosting Hank the day before. That boy wears out everyone. 🙂
Mary, I love your Dove in the Window quilt. Beautiful colors, too! Keeper is such a sweet boy. He & Three are so sweet together. Saturday evening we had a couple of thunderstorms here & we certainly needed the rain. Our temps have been in the 90’s here in SW Ohio. I’ve had to take my hanging baskets of flowers down due to the sun baking them. One of my neighbors has offered to water all my plants while I’m gone to the lake for 2 wks! I honestly have the best neighbors here! And she’s another pet lover!! Love all the pictures shared!
I LOVE your quilt!
Keeper nd Three look so comfy napping together.
We had rain also for which we are so grateful. We are in sw Illinois, so we could spend a few days with our grandson, before he leaves for his first college semester. It is bittersweet but quality time.
Thanks, Mary 🥰
We could use some of your rain, so hot and dry. We’re not sure how much irrigation water we will have. Love your quilt. I haven’t done any sewing but lots of home improvements and keeping the garden alive. Have a good night
Keeper is such a good boy and lover of his furrr-siblings!
No rain here in central CA, lots of HOT weather. I really can’t complain, we have had beautiful summer weather up until this week. Plus, looking around at all those in other states with flooding, feeling very blessed!
Love your Dove in the Window quilt.
Praying for all that are impacted with the floods, just heartbreaking 💔
Love your Dove in the Window quilt. I even liked it before you took it apart. Enjoyed the quilt show as well. Keeper is just the best dog, snuggling with the cats. Definitely a keeper.
Mary your Dove in the Window is gorgeous! Love the parade of quilts, always so different. The yellow roses are beautiful too! My favorite, but you rarely see them. Thank you to all for sharing.
Keeper is just the sweetest boy, snuggling with his cats 🐈 😻.
I had my 2 weeks after knee replacement visit yesterday and I am doing so good they said. Finally got the bandage off but I still have the tightness, she said from swelling and the glue/ stitches. My range of motion is good and have graduated to the 🦯 cane. The nurse did tell me about 2 patients that were healing and fell and their incision burst open. Oy vey! 😣 I can only imagine the pain! I’m being very careful!
Love your Dove in the Window quilt. Excellent choice of fabrics.
We’ll take rain from anywhere! Light thunder last night with a few sprinkles!! That’s it for us…I love your Dove in the Window Mary!! For the life of me I couldn’t find the mistakes that you spoke of?!? Where can I find the pattern to this quilt? I, like others, have some large floral fabrics that I have never known what to do with. I think I can pull my big girl britches up and attempt to cut into it!
I love your porch and the sweet furry friends that are enjoying it…they can’t play outside in the rain so they’ll just take a nap instead! Are you able to pull some of your plants in so they don’t rot from all the water? I suppose the pots are too heavy tho-I can’t hardly lift a 6# chicken out of the oven any longer! Sewing and hand work are the only thing that erases all that is going on around us…I never thought I’d see all of the division and hatrid in our country. I know our generation was raised differently and to be tolerant of other’s beliefs. Hope this doesn’t sound too political??? God bless you Mary-you’re such an example of a good person.
Arlene – no, what you said was not too political. I can’t imagine being on edge all the time and trying to convince the other side that I’m right. They think THEY are right and who’s to say? I hate squabbling and I simply won’t engage in it. Dove In the Window is available from me for $5 and a SASE. Send cash or check made out to Mary ETHERINGTON.
The wet plants have to stay outside to dry now – I brought some of my most favorite ones inside a couple weeks ago to save them but maybe this is God’s way of decreasing my work load? Ha!
Mary your Doves in the window is a beautiful quilt. The colors are stunning.
The readers post wonderful quilts. I find so much inspiration in them.
Another great post.
The Dove in the Window quilt is so pretty, and the mitered corners are done so well. We seem to be in a drier period in SW Ohio. We watered the garden last night. There’s a chance of rain today; we’ll see if it comes or not. I’m excited to see green tomatoes on the plants behind the netting. The deer has still been coming back to eat off the top of the plants. It’s supposed to be in the 90’s today.
Another beautiful quilt show and the animals are so sweet. I too thought keeper was snuggling a toy then once I read a comment zoomed in to the picture to see it was a cat. I hope my Eddy likes cats.
We are just waiting, impatiently, for the subjects to be removed from the purchase of our house then we can remove the last subject from the property we have an offer on. I I have been praying every day. The deadline for subject removal is some in July 15 and the last July 17.
Teresa, what is a subject, is it a tenant?
Teresa – can you explain your “subject”issue?
So in Canada when you buy a home you may have subjects for example- subject to financing , subject to a home inspection or subject to sale (we had this subject as we need to sell our home to have the money to buy the new one. All subjects are given a date they must be removed by or the offer is off. So today-one day before 4 subjects had to be removed, the people buying our house removed them. All they have to do is remove the subject to financing which has to come off by Thursday. Once that is off it is a done deal and we can legally say we have sold our house. Then we will remove our last subject on the place we are buying, which is subject to the sale of our home. Then the fun begins. The people buying our place want to move in Aug 15th but we can’t move in to the home we bought till Sept 12th unless the current owners agree to move earlier. We chose a date far because we thought it may take some time to sell our house- well jokes on us, we accepted an offer after it was on the market 6 days. Right now some homes have been on the market for 6 months. In our neighbourhood just in the last month 4 houses have sold in 10 days or less.
I love how your pets get along with each other. Mine loved the sun spot on the floor and would crawl on each other to lay in the sun.
We had rain Friday, lots of it. And hail. Not big, but lots of it too. I’ll never complain about rain.
When I saw the tea party setting.. I wanted to join in. Over in Laramie, there is a bakery called Sugar Mouse. They have the most delicious German Chocolate cupcakes, it is decorated for tea parties. Pink and cream.
On the weekends, Grandma’s, mom’s and beautiful little ladies with hats and gloves having a tea party at every table. It’s a wonder land to walk into. It’s adorable.
Friday morning my quilting group took off to out of town quilt shops. It was wonderful getting away with friends. The shop employees are so friendly, fabric is luscious, small towns with fun shopping. I loved it.
Ps. Google Sugar Mouse Cupcake Laramie Wyoming
The Sugar Mouse cupcakes look wonderful. Wish I lived close… or maybe not as I would be one of their best customers!
Mary-your porch is just the best. Glad you and Rick can enjoy being outside even if it is raining,
I think that is Three sleeping with Keeper. Such a loving home.
Sandy-your quiet day sounds great, TV, stitching, and
Uber eats. Hope your legs just need a rest.
Please send some rain our way. So dry and hot here in Scottsdale.
Started an embroidery project with the saying, “Kind word are like honey. Sweet to the soul.” It is inspired by a little cafe in Rio Verde called Honey and Soul.
Dove in the Window is beautiful! I usually pass on big print fabrics. They are beautiful but I’m afraid I’ll lose the image when it’s cut into pieces. Your quilt makes me want to try big print fabrics.
The little tea party table is so sweet!
And how sweet is Keeper and the kitty.
Love “Dove in the Window”. Nice job!
All the photos were so comforting. Flowers, dog and cats, lots of green–love it!
We have had rain in SW Iowa but nothing like up there. Lots of threats. I have some sort of weed that invaded my hostas behind my house. I have not really been out there for a month since my back door/deck got torn off and the new one still in process. Ugly weed and I am afraid I can’t deal with it but I am going to try today since it’s cooler. Gloves and something to clip with. We have weed killer on the grass but Holy cats this is bad for an ugly weed. I might have to hire someone to take that whole area out.. It had the thick paper and rocks on top with pretty hostas and was free from any work. What has happened this yr? Yikes.
Doubtful I spend any time in the sewing room today.
Love your Dove in the Window, especially the colors.
You have such beautiful cats. Which one is with Keeper all snuggled in? I miss having cats.
The tea party is just waiting for guests.
I was thinking the same thing looking at the pictures…I miss cats too.
Suzanne – Keeper is especially partial to Three!
Did you watch the Fever game last night, Mary? It was a bit troubling at the start (first half), but they got their act together the second half. I feel so badly for Caitlin as she just isn’t back to herself yet after two injuries. I know she has to be more frustrated with herself than we are. That’s what I told my husband as she kept missing shots. I am so happy they won. They really needed that. Sophie Cunningham was amazing.
On another note, we were having rain last night and lost our TV signal several times, but did see all the game but just a couple minutes. We ended up with 1.3″ of rain, but haven’t had near as much as you have up there in northern Iowa and other parts of Iowa. I can’t remember having this much rain in the summer since the floods of 1993.
I enjoyed all the pictures and quilts in today’s post, as always. Thank you everyone.
Mary, PLEASE send some of that rain across the big lake to West Michigan!
Your Dove in the Window quilt is beautiful, yummy colors.
I would love to sit at that kid’s table for a tea party, brings back memories of when I’d make the dog sit at my little table for a pretend meal.
We, too, have had so much rain in Iowa City. Portions of our lawn “squish” when I walk on it. I am thankful to not have to water, but all the rain and storms have brought new rounds of work. We had hail and 60 mph wind bursts one eve. The big leafed veggie plants like squash and cucumbers took a beating with lots of holes in the leaves. Now we wait to see if the plants survive. They had just begun production.
I have had a quilt on the longarm quilting frame for three weeks. I am unable to get excited about it.
Love the pictures of the animals. Keeper looks very content. Lots of interesting quilt pictures. Thank you, everyone, for sharing.
Mary, when I went back to yesterday’s post about the reunion, I found Cynthia’s post commenting on each photo that you posted in this Friday night blog. She describes each item in detail. It was interesting to read. It was fun to see Keeper all snuggled up in the chair with the stuffed animal. Oh, wait, that’s a real cat with him!!! Haha!!!
Hi Mary, Keeper is living the life of Riley! I thought he was sleeping with a polar bear toy, but it’s one of the cats!Quiet day today, legs not too good, so tv and applique of leaves on my mariners compass quilt, now to order Uber eats for dinner! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
I can’t believe the Midwest is getting so much rain this summer. Have you ever had this much in your lifetime? We haven’t had much rain since mid-June. Just some dewy mornings. It has been cool, though. Lots of days I have needed a sweater or sweatshirt. And, then there is all that flooding in the south and NM. Crazy weather.
That sweet dog. Look how great he is with the cats.
I was out in the crazy rain today. I went to Kalona to get some flannel at the quilt shop. It’s an hours drive from the Iowa house. It wasn’t raining when I went and when I left the sky was dark. I drove most of the way in driving rain. In Muscatine I pulled into a covered parking garage as it was getting worse. I had a short window to get home so took off. My son opened my garage door and after I pulled the car in the rain hit again. It took me an hour and a half to get home. If’s finally slowing down so I’m headed to bed.
I think it’s supposed to rain again tomorrow so it’ll be a sew day.
Susan – I saw that your area got hit hard!! Glad you got home safely – it’s thundering again right now!
