Sparkling Windows! 9-4-25

Twenty sparkling windows! Continued debugging and cleaning plants – my favorites are inside. Outside it’s survival of the fittest.

Hazel’s adventure today, you ask? Rick left one loader of manure that he intended to put on his garden but hasn’t gotten it done yet. Hazel started digging in it today –

And found a mouse!

One chomp and that mouse was history! No, she didn’t eat it – just one deadly chomp and then Keeper took it. So think about that dirty head and mouth – yet by now she’s looking pretty clean again. I think she rolled in the grass – I don’t know.

Limelight hydrangeas
Millie

Am I the only one bringing in houseplants?

…………

A woman was desperate for a husband, so desperate that she put an ad in the paper saying “husband wanted”. The next day she got hundreds of replies, all saying the same thing: “you can have mine!”

Aww, it’s just a joke!

P.S. remember those sparkling windows? It’s raining now. Sigh.

Oh, how my mom loved sparkling windows! Every year my dad had to remove every storm window from every window on both stories of our farmhouse (located directly on a dirt road . . . ), prop them up by the rainwater cistern so Mom could wash them before storing in the cellar. Then, the process was reversed every spring. Downstairs windows were washed regularly all summer, depending on the level of rainwater in the cistern. If there had been an outside faucet where she could have attached a hose, those upstairs windows would have been washed all summer, too. Good girl, Hazel! Keep that mouse population under control!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Marlene – oh, what a lot of work for your mom! But if she loved sparkling windows it was worth it to her. I. Not sure about your dad – ha. Our old farmhouse had the worst combination windows – supposed to be the most innovative system in the 50’s – they were horrible and my mom had a terrible time with them. My windows are not combination – they have half screens which are very easy.

OK, Ginger S in New Hampshire, you have most of us drooling. You live in a gorgeous place AND have a cottage in Maine???? We are so envious!! But, not of your winters! Enjoy!

  3. Kathy L

the window’s and everything look fabulous, I start mine tomorrow. hope to be done by Thanksgiving.
    I love all the jokes

  4. Jeanie S, Central IL

Your windows look great! Thanks for the lovely pictures.
That Hazel just cracks me up; she is so enthusiastic about everything, just digs right in. I wonder if Keeper is all that excited about the manure pile?
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

  5. Janice

Mary, clean windows are wonderful to have. I just find that I want to look outside more because everything you look at is clearer and crisper looking. I have really enjoyed your sky /cloud photos. I need to get over to the Ruby Ellen Farm this weekend for another monthly photo of the cornfield. May have to wait until Sunday for sunshine though. We had rained again today. It wasn’t all that warm of a day, and we had really strong winds that made it feel even colder. Brrr, I had to turn the furnace on. Janice, Traverse City area

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janice – Rick has the furnace on in his part of the house but I haven’t started it yet in my sewing room. Feels pretty chilly here for early September actually. Makes me sad to think my porch days are over for the year.

      1. Suzanne

Same here for our porch days in west Michigan, Mary. We have put a portable heater in our screen porch room and even had the furnace on in the house a couple days at the end of AUGUST.
Hazel is a hoot, but her antics make me feel anxious sometimes! LOL Never a dull moment for you!
        PS The windows look fabulous!!!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Suzanne – now that fierce little dog when it comes to taking on varmints is afraid of the tractor when Rick starts it up – we can’t quite figure it out yet because she didn’t use to be this way. And she’s so timid with loud noises – she’s a diva for sure!

Mary I love your clean windows. Makes me want to wash mine. What is your recipe using corn starch to keep them clean longer? Love all your plants but I kill every plant I have had. My daughter tells me not to even look at her plants afraid they will die. Lol. Your post are not about nothing as I learn a lot from reading all the comments

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jean – here’s my window recipe:
      1/4 c. Alcohol
      1/4 c. Vinegar
      1 T. Cornstarch
2 C. Water – I try to use distilled water but not always in my cupboard but definitely Italy soft vs. hard water
Yes, I agree – I learn a lot from my readers of the blog about nothing. Truly it’s a modern day Kitchen Klatter!

  7. Jean Slater

Mary all your window just sparkle. Makes me want to get mine washed. What is your recipe with corn starch for keeping them clean longer? I love all your plants. I wish I had a green thumb. But I kill every plant I have had. My daughter tells me not to even look at her plants. Lol. Love your post and it’s not about nothing because I learn a lot reading the comments. Have a great weekend.

  8. Sue H

I’ll be bringing in my plants soon but not just yet down here in southern Illinois. My windows could use a good washing too. Maybe this weekend. I did finally clean out all the spaces between the screens & glass. That area gets so ucky, so quickly! One thing always leads to another. If I wash the windows, I’ll want to wash the curtains. I’d rather be sewing! Lol!

  9. Jan in AZ

Beautiful windows! Several dust storms put off window cleaning for awhile. The green house porch looks so inviting. No wonder Millie is there. Keep the jokes coming – all bring a smile or guffaw. 🙂 Today is for finishing up little quilting projects for myself. Then it’s back to charity quilts for a November delivery. Have a great weekend!

That joke is so funny. That 100 year old lady could have added a 4th husband and said – and 4 to go. I so admire all your plants and have no idea how you have the energy to take care of them. I have a few that stay in my front east facing window and I struggle to take good care of them. Hazel gets into so much that she could have been named Trouble. I love her. Love all your photos tool

  11. Joy in NW Iowa

Your windows are beautiful sparkling mirrors! Wow!
I have been wondering if you have kept track of your rainfall this summer?
I do not have many house plants. Three to be exact! They have to be easy care because I’m not a good care taker.
I had to buy a new stove! Mine is 16 years old. Grrr. They are delivering it this morning. Good thing as have company coming for the wedding next week plus having a reunion here on Saturday the 13th.
    Exciting week next week!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – another wedding! How fun for your family to get together – great food, good conversation = fun! I how not kept track but I’ll bet Rick has – I’ll ask. I just love these plants – some I’ve had for many years – my original Hoya was given to me by my employer in about 1972 – it’s huge and I’d hate to lose it. The plants become almost like pets – old friends and this year since I shopped at Walmart I have quite a few new ones. I wonder why I thought I’d have room for them all! I just bought a new stove, too – coming Sept 15

  12. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

We have the same luck! Every time I wash windows it rains the next day. When I switched to washing 5 each day because it was too hard to try and get all of them in one day, the rain amazingly held off until the end of the week of cleaning! If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any.

Hazel has the same nose as Sammie, they can sniff out critters in a pile of poo! Snakes like to nest in my manure pile as well as mice because it’s nice and warm decomposing, great for babies!!

Blessings everyone, I’m going to look at my dirty windows.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – Hazel digs for anything and yet she somehow cleans herself up -I’ll bet her brown bed is full of dirt. At least I KNOW the windows are clean!

  13. Teresa formerly from Port Coquitlam, BC

Mary your windows sparkle. I love clean windows and enjoy just sitting and looking out when they are clean. Bringing your plants in a a labour of love. I only have one house plant but I did just buy an indoor fern for the new house. I was at the garden store and they were beautiful. I used to have a fern years ago and I know the living room in the new house will be perfect. Bright but not direct sun. So now I have two I guess. If it’s raining can it be sewing time for you?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – no sewing time for me till next week – then I can sit and sew! I’m about half done with the plants – this is such poor coincidence – it’s rarely this cold this early. Love ferns but somehow I don’t know how to keep them looking nice.

  14. Lori

Your windows just sparkle! And your plants are so wonderful. I can barely keep three plants alive.
That “mouse” had a very long thick tail, my granddaughter recently found a rat in our barn, oof.

  15. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

Mary, I just have indoor and outdoor plants. I thought about putting my 3 Christmas cactus outside on the porch, but never did. One cactus is old, and I didn’t want to hurt it.

    Your windows are beautiful!

  16. Susan

Your post today was very motivating! Love those sparkling windows! Houseplants not in yet as I live in Southern North Carolina but temps are getting cooler…awesome!

  17. Ginger S in New Hampshire

Cute joke Denise!! Your windows look so nice. I love how cozy your room is with all of the pants and warm lighting. I’ve spent a lot of time at our cottage in Maine this summer. I did a lot of painting and fixing up. It’s been a productive summer .

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ginger – a cottage in Maine? Sounds picturesque and cozy, too. What did you fix up?

  18. Kathy in western NY

I don’t have the green thumb you have so I enjoy seeing your plants both inside and outside. The few I do have just stay in the sunroom on tables all through the year. Now take it easy Mary looking out those beautiful clean windows.

  19. Bobby Sutton

    Bobby in Md
Windows that sparkle! Its the simple things in life that make one happy. Even with the rain, they will still look clean for awhile. It’s ery dry snd dusty here. Farmers start cutting corn and soy beans soon. I’ll wait to wash car and windows for awhile. We will have warm westher for snother month, do plsnts stay outside for now.
    Happy Fall all.

  20. Jean

This windows! Wow. They look wonderful. I wash mine twice a year but it’s getting harder and harder to do. Takes me two days to recover once I finish. Then iof course immediately the pups go over to those clean windows and leave nose marks on them. Ugh.

  21. Sandy

Hi Mary, your windows look fabulous, it’s great someone else did the work!very windy and wet here today, fortunately not when l took Bella out for toilet time. Family have all been sick with covid for a week, keeping my distance, and ok!Finished my mariners compass today, back to churn dash blocks now, take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  22. Martha W in WY

Mary, I didn’t even see Millie in that first photo of her. I thought you were showing us all of the plants you brought in. I need to wash my windows also. But, I’ll wait till my husband finishes drilling the wheat. Then we can have a shower or two. I finally got the windshield in my car replaced. While I was in ND hubby drove my car into town. Wouldn’t you know it, it hailed…BIG stones! Two perfectly round cracks in my windshield. I ♥️ the clear windshield!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – whoa – those must have been huge hailstones to break a windshield! Yowser! I think I can splurge this year and have the outsides washed after Tim finishes harvest. Those $5 patterns income will be my funding.

  23. Charlotte in No California

I love clean windows! I wish mine were clean. Yours are just sparkling. Your plants look so nice inside. Oh that Hazel! I enjoy hearing of her adventures.

  24. li

The windows are spectacular. What a great job.
    Oh.
Didn’t you all need the moisture, I hope?
My goodness those hydrangeas would lift anyone’s spirit.

  25. Dorothy in Chicago

I’ll be bringing my plants inside in the next few days. Don’t know where they’re all going to fit, have split a few so it’s going to be tight! Love your clean windows!

  26. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, your windows look fabulous!! They sparkle!!
You were right about Caitlin probably not playing any more games this year. I hope she heals well and will be ready for next year.
    Sleep well!

  27. Denise

Lovely photo of clean windows Mary, looking at mine makes me feel guilty.

    I have a joke

A 100 year old lady was being interviewed about her long life.
“Of course I’ve been married three times, the first to a banker, the second to a ringmaster in a circus and the third to a Minister.”
    “Well that is interesting”
    “Yes,
    One for the money,
    Two for the show.
    Three to get ready”
    ,,,,,,,,,,

    ,..,..

  28. Tina W in Oregon

Your windows just sparkle! We’re having ours washed tomorrow – just the outside. Last week there was pressure washing and painting going on so the windows are pretty dirty. It’s so nice to look out of clean windows! The hydrangeas are so pretty. I used to make wreaths out of dried hydrangeas. We’ll have company all next week for the big rodeo that starts Wednesday. It’s crazy to try to get around town but kind of fun to walk around and see all the different vendors. Main Street is closed down and different entertainment is on every block – along with more vendors, food booths and carnival rides. The town swells to three times its size!

    1. Teresa formerly from Port Coquitlam, BC

Tina, where in Oregon is the rodeo? Can’t go this year but it would be fun to go another year.

      1. Tina W in Oregon

It’s the Pendleton Round Up. I’m getting out of town next Friday to attend the Walla Walla, WA quilt show even though I’ll miss the Westward Ho parade. There are no motorized vehicles in it – just horses, wagons and buggies, and walking.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Tina – I know Becky and I would both love the parade – we grew up with riding horses and going to sakes and shows

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Tina – I do hate rodeos but I’d love all the vendors and excitement!! I wish my house had been pressure washed, too, but next spring – it’s hard work. Surely I can find a company to hire?

  29. Christine in az

I love your bright and shiny windows and your joke. My husband even laughed.

Sorry about the rain but you probably brought it on with the window washing. Wish we could make rain appear like that …

  30. Jo in Wyoming

Doesn’t it figure…finally clean windows and it rains.🤨.
Your windows look fabulous, I wish I had your crew here.
Years ago I ask the windex people to put some of that dishwasher finishing product in the cleaner. The stuff that doesn’t leave spots on your glasses. They never did, so put a little in my cleaning liquid.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – and I think that’s what my window washers do, too – it’s a good idea!! I also have a mixture with cornstarch that really keeps the glass clean longer, I think. Makes for slick glass and nothing sticks.

  31. Sara in Indiana

I have brought in one plant so far, the Christmas cactus. Later will bring in the tuberous begonia and some of the potted impatiens. I had to clear out the spiderweb from the area in the garage where I put the plants. Your windows look so nice! Any window cleaning here has to wait til the harvest dust is done.

  32. Judy B- Michigan

Your rooms and windows look wonderful. Even though it’s rainina your windows are all clean!
