Sunday Night, 6-1-25

Becky and provided the special music this morning in church – since this makes us both nervous we asked to be scheduled first so we didn’t have to worry about it all summer. Now we’re done with that! We did Blessed Assurance and Victory In Jesus – both as singalongs.

Reader photos

A reader in Hawaii did these blocks – traditional Hawaiian appliquéd blocks with echo quilting.

Remember Kim’s quilt that Rita made? She used color cat hers when she washed it and they were very effective.

Just beautiful!
Just awful!

    Love that iris!

Those Hawaiian blocks are stunning. I love them. I bought a laser cut applique in purple batik from a quilt store in Kona while I was there. Wish I had bought at least one more. Need to do something with it. I also did a reversed applique in Hawaiian style, my own design, in a wall hanging. It hangs in my bedroom where I admire it. I would send a pic if I had your email addy, Mary.

If that truck taking up 2 handicap parking spots didn’t have a handicap sticker, I certainly hope he was turned in and charged double the normal parking violation fee.

Amazing appliqué on those Hawaiian quilt blocks. And a good reminder for the color catchers. I have some orphan blocks that bled and I want to fix them. I didn’t know you could reuse them. Always get a lot of information from this blog!! Thanks for the picture of the iris, very beautiful!

That parking hog is just awful, and I don’t see a handicap placard anywhere, maybe a rear plate? Still, it’s quite rude. I love the old hymns and I’m sure your church loved having you both playing. Our grandmother loved to play, and we would all gather around in her front room and sing, such good memories. The iris is lovely; I need to look for some bulbs and plant some in our woods. It’s amazing how tall some of them can get. I managed to spray the woods for poison ivy, will do it again in a week. I thought I had killed it last year but its growing aggressively this year. The trick it not to catch it while spraying. A few of the wildflowers are up and it’s nice to see some color in our woods.

Kim – I can see that it’s a very fancy truck and I know he doesn’t want to get banged up from other car doors BUT two handicap spots? And how handicapped can he be if he can get into that monster truck?

Those Hawaiian quilt blocks are a work of art. Just beautiful. I was fortunate to take a trip to Hawaii years ago and, took a Hawaiian quilt class at a shop there. It was the highlight of my trip and I learned so much about their quilts and stories behind them. Thanks for sharing.

I love those color catchers! Work like a dream – have a box on top of my washer

The Hawaiian applique is gorgeous 😍

I have to roll my eyes and shake my head at the parking picture – where are peoples brains these days???

Have a great day everyone 😊

Oh, how I wish I had been in your church this morning. I would have loved to “sing along” for those two hymns! Traditional hymns are my FAVORITE!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Paula – our service is streamed on Facebook every Sunday morning if you’d like to tune in. We usually song one newer song and two from our hymnal – all old ones because that’s just our church preference.

Color Catchers are wonderful. I have a box in a drawer by my washer. I love irises! I don’t know why I don’t have any in my yard. I’ll have to work on that. The Hawaiian blocks are beautiful!

Color catchers have saved me many times! I may have mentioned about Ron’s roof & ceiling leaking due to the ice on his roof. The water leaked on his quilt of valor quilt & it bled. I brought it home & washed it in Dawn & 4 color catchers & at least 95% of the bleeding came out! I’m the only one that can see a couple of small spots left in it. I think the only reason it bled like that was because he didn’t catch it right away. Those Hawaiian quilts are gorgeous! Beautiful Irises! It looks like we may have a few days without rain here in SW Ohio!

Is the pink quilt a jelly roll race quilt? Our guild made 6 of them for our guilds charity project-having a race by dividing the members into 6 groups. Fun times! I would like to make one with all of my scraps. I always have color catchers on hand-they really work.

    1. Rita in Iowa

Cindy the quilt is not a Jelly roll quilt but is made with 2 1/2 strips for large quilt and uses 1 1/2 strips for wallhanging. The pattern is called The Ribbon Quilt. Not difficult but takes a little planning.

Rita – I don’t know if I still have your picture but I know it’s a breast cancer symbol – Cindy probably wouldn’t know that. I’ll look

  11. BRENDA

gorgeous Iris. Do you think the parker-hog could have been more demeaning to have the disability symbols at both doors while straddling 2 spaces????

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – I think the parker hog can’t be that handicapped if he can get into that monstrosity.

I cannot push Color Catchers too much! I have a box by the washing machine and when there are new DARK colors like black and blue fabric or red, the load gets a couple of the catchers. I also reuse the catcher until it is BLACK.

The Guild ladies were hand quilting a red and white quilt to be donated to a charity to sell chances and make money. They were horrified when they washed it. Everything was a dark pink. Somebody had a box of the catchers and they worked a miracle on the quilt and everybody was convinced how great the catchers are.

We are forecast for bad storm tonight. I bought 3 geraniums and another was given to me so I decided to put them in the garage. Better safe than sorry. It got up to 92 today, so who knows what tonight will bring.

    In the meantime, take care.

Betty – I’m always interested in your weather because what you have we’ll be getting in a day or two. Your charity quilt was saved! What have you been sewing lately? Show us – I know you’ve got lots of fabric and you sew all the time. Rapid City must be abuzz with activity.

The storm made a lot of noise for a bit, but we got 1/10″ rain. All talk and no show. The hills can protect us, or the storms can really hit us, too. We really need the moisture.

My sister-in-law is in assisted living and asked if I’d make her a twin size quilt for her bed. Right now I’m looking for somebody to quilt it, but figure everybody is getting ready for the quilt show. I’ll wait a couple weeks and make a couple calls then. It is just a simple quilt, but I know why I like the pediatric size. Since I like scrappy quilts, it takes awhile to get all the fabrics cut, etc. I’ve got 3 patterns in different stages — the blocks in each pattern will probably make 2 separate quilts. None of the quilts are complicated and I work on what is convenient. Actually, fabric scraps are taking over my life. I just can’t throw those beautiful pieces of fabric………

I think my niece from St. Louis is coming for a visit, so I have to get stuff picked up so somebody could actually sit in the living room., but I don’t remember the date. This means I have to get the room downstairs ready, It hasn’t been touched since they installed a new water heater last October. What I do best is procrastinate!!!

In the mean time it is time for the Quilt Show Time!!

It’s been very warm and really windy the last few days in NE Oregon. This morning before the wind picked up I got out and sprayed weeds. It wouldn’t be too bad if only the neighbor kept up with his weeds. Sigh…During a three night quilt retreat last week, I was able to piece the Flag House quilt. Now – just have to decide how to quilt it. Have a great week!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Tina – Wow! All in one retreat? And now it will be ready for future patriotic holidays and anything in between! I love that quilt.

Mary, I enjoyed your church music this morning. You and Becky are very talented and are kind ladies to share your talents. Once again, it was great to see all the children come forward for the children’s sermon. Those little girls who sit on your lap are so precious.
    Have a good week!
