The Answer! 6-3-25

Keeper’s DNA test came back today and now we know.

51% German Shepherd – I have ALWAYS said his ears look like GS ears. When he was a baby he was All ears.

19% Belgian Malinois – people have asked me if he was this kind of dog

11% greyhound – he can run like the wind!

11% border collie – he has nothing to herd

8% Anatolian Shepherd

I can only think of one negative issue – he still stinks when he gets wet like today!

And the flag quilt hanging in the porch:

“The U.S. Flag Code provides guidelines for displaying and respecting the American flag. When hung vertically, the union (blue field) should be to the observer’s left.”

Since the pattern shows the flag hung incorrectly I put the blue field in the upper left. Frankly after my mistake with the barn door, I’d never take a chance in doing it wrong again!

A reader asked about the chickens – they like to eat the birdseed on the ground under the feeders.

Their back feathers are slowly coming back in.
I got another huge double yolker again today and I’m thinking this is the gal. She’s my favorite hen and I saw her in the nest where I later found the egg.

I made this small drawstring bag for a friend to give to HER friend, a little boy who collects matchbox cars. He likes to take the cars with him and now he’s got a bag for several. Carol – I’ll put it in the mail to you.

The Fever won tonight but it was a shaky third quarter.

P.S. Question for local readers – know of any cleaning ladies wanting more customers?

Keeper is such a handsome boy..
Your grass is so green. I bet the chickens are enjoying that.

My kids are moving into their very first, and hopefully, last house for many years. It’s so exciting. That old piano in my garage can go to to its permanent home.

Jo – I have another longarm question. My quilting stitches are just great when the quilt becomes completely wrapped around the far bar but is it my canvas that doesn’t keep it tight at the beginning?

      1. Jo in Wyoming

It could be the canvas or it could be the break. When I have uneven tension on the framed quilt, I tuck batting strips under the canvas where it’s sagging. The edges on mine sag often, and I have to add batting. When the back is a lot bigger than the top and batting, I always have to tuck batting in.
        I. Hope this makes sense. I’ll try to send a pix.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – yea, it makes sense. I use the side straps a lot until it gets wound on the other bar. I also hold it with my left hand so it’s tight – so glad it’s not something I’m doing wrong.

Keeper is a keeper for sure! All good, smart breeds. Our Gracie was an Anatolian Shephard, and you couldn’t find a more loyal creature.

  3. Sharon G NE IN

Those ears!!!!!!! I wondered if he was part German Shepard. Love the farm pics! Nothing like a trip around the farm. I spent many happy days at the farm when I was growing up! Country life is the best.

  4. Des

Keeper is a very handsome boy. I grew up on a farm & we always had 2 German Shepherds. Our chickens were free range & the dogs never bothered them. My Dad’s birthday was July 3rd too! Enjoy this beautiful weather.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Des – so I’ll bet your dad never had a birthday party on the third either, did he? He had to wait till the 4th because the family was getting together then anyway. So typical. Ha! Keeper and Hazel both ignore the chickens.

      1. Candy

Our youngest daughter’s birthday is Dec. 24th. She always had a birthday party with her friends a week or two before her birthday, then Dec. 24th was always her birthday party with all the family. Dec. 25th was, of course, Christmas. I always thought it worked out well. It wasn’t until she was twenty-something that she admitted she hated her birthday. All her friends got to go out and party with their friends on their birthdays, but of course, everything’s closed, and everyone’s at home on Christmas Eve. Oh, well … we tried! She’ll be 50 on her birthday this year, so that’s history now … lol!

Candy – even today when we try to celebrate my bd on July 3 we live near Clear Lake that hosts the largest 5 day 4th of July celebration in the state. Everything is packed and we can’t go out to eat.

  5. Betty Klosterman in Rapid City

By golly, I was close on Keepers heritage!! He looks like a very good dog.

That’s quite a lot of good breeding in that dog. I thing’s amazing how you teach your dogs to be good around the chickens. What a great dog you have there.
My Buster is such a loving dog. He always want to come in after I sit on the back porch. I think his original owner wanted a full blooded golden retriever and he was a mix. Can’t think of any other reason to give him up. I just love him. Never gets into any trouble like cat litter or trash. He didn’t even eat the cat’s food which amazed me.
I love the red, white, and blue that fills the summer months, too.
I love that bag you made for a lucky boy. My younger brother loved his matchbox cars. Whenever I see them in the store I think of him. Good things to give Toys for Tots. That and Barbies.😃

Carolyn – mixed breed dogs have fewer medical issues – be glad he’s a mix. He sounds perfect!

      1. Alice in SW OH

Mary, I agree about mixed breed dogs! Every Cocker Spaniels I had never lived longer the 5-7 yrs. My rescues lived to 12-14.5 yrs. And most of them I adopted when they were about 9 yrs old!

  7. Sharon F

Keeper’s heritage is a very interesting mix of breeds, all active, working dogs. No wonder he has so much energy.

Mary, I’m curious – what makes that particular hen your favorite?

We’re getting ready for a trip. I want to finish prepping some applique today to take with me to work on.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – she has such nice feathering with black and white patterns – plus she has a beard! And she’s such a nice compact shape – not tall and leggy.

  8. Kim from Wi

Keeper sure is an interesting mix of breeds and I love his ears, looks like he is always listening, lol. I love seeing your chickens and nice that they are free to roam. I have made quite a few Quilts of Valor quilts in Red White and Blue but don’t have anything here to hang up. I need to fix that, lord knows I have plenty of fabrics. It might become my new project.

  9. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

Aww, sweet, sweet sweetie Keeper! I wish he was mine. Very good and smart lineage. Penny and Lucy on the other hand would say paws down 🤭.
Darrell and I finished our Azithromycin yesterday but we are still under the Covid weather. He’s coughing more than I am, we’re so tired and just don’t feel well. Still can’t smell or taste anything, awful place. I almost fell outside this morning putting away the hose, scary.
I am sending my order for the quilt pattern, my magazine is long gone. Please hold your breath when opening or open outside. Thanks so much!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – you don’t think a Covid germ would come along, do you? I hope not – we should test that theory but I’d hate to get sick and miss this beautiful weather!

  10. Diana in Des Moines

Mary – my dad’s birthday was July 3rd also! We always had neighborhood parades on the 4th when I was a kid and he thought we did them for him!
I have that flag pattern in a mini. Fabric is all pulled in a tray just waiting to be started. Someday….
I love your chickens. What happened to their back feathers?

  11. Marie C

What an interesting combination of ancestors. Keeper must be very smart. Many of the breeds you listed are known for their intelligence.

  12. Fran Dixon

What a wonderful combination for a dog! Smart!

The chickens are entertaining. I love to buy local eggs. I am spoiled by them and find store bought eggs have no taste.

I got sewing room time yesterday. It was sew day here, 4 for lunch, and 3 to sew. It rained most of the day. I run a dehumidifier in the basement all summer so it was comfy in the sewing room. I have a quilt on the long arm and hope to finish it today. I didn’t long arm with company as I can’t concentrate enough and can’t keep up with the conversation. So I worked on some scrappy pieced blocks.

    1. Fran Dixon

I forgot to mention those ears stand up nicely. Some are taped up to stand up. I bet Keeper’s needed no taping!

  13. Ann

I recently saw that flag pattern and thought about your original barn quilt. I didn’t know it was hung wrong until people told you.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ann – well, I didn’t k ow it was wrong either until I was bombarded with objections.

  14. Cindy K

Keeper is a very handsome dog-yes those ears look like a german shepherd. Our Zoey was a german shepherd and also had those big ears-so cute when they are puppies. I like the flag quilt and all of the other patriotic quilts on the porch. Looks cozy. The little guy who gets the drawstring bag is going to be tickled.
I also watched the game-nice to see they played so well-can’t wait for Caitlins return.

  15. Sharon G. (eastern WA)

Mary – Love the flag quilt. Chickens are so pretty. Good to see them out and about.
Keeper is a keeper. It’s amazing what DNA can reveal especially for dogs. Keeper does have German Shepard ears, doesn’t he?

    Take care everyone.

  16. Connie in NV

Keeper is definitely a keeper he is a mixture of good breeds. I think all dogs stink when wet, so don’t hold that against Keeper.
Happy to see your flag quilt hung properly, I have a similar one that I hang. I use Americana decorations from Memorial Day through Labor Day. I love red, white and blue decor.
It was good to see a picture of the dogs sitting, usually Hazel’s butt sticky out of a hole is in the picture. 😂😃
Enjoyed the fever game, looking forward to Caitlin back in the game,

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Connie – I love red, white and blue, too. Always have – maybe because my BD is July 3 and Fourth of July was always connected.
