The Fair, 8-1-26

Michele took over the Open Textile Show at the fair so I visited this afternoon when she tallied the People’s Choice Award.

Here it is! Lots of work in this quilt and it’s wonderful!

More pics from the show

And Ellen got Reserve Champion in the flower show.

It really is a great fair! So much to look at and see – if only I had an hour to wait for Mexican food. ☹️

Poor Hazel – she is having an allergic reaction to SOMETHING! Look at her tummy!

I noticed it last night in bed when she rolled over for a tummy rub and I was mortified! This morning I talked to my friend Jane who suggested a flea and tick bath which we did and then a dose of Benadryl. She has acted all right today but how would she lick it? She can’t reach it. I sprayed a cortisone spray on her tummy and she ate some meat tonight. Just roast pork – no additives of any kind. I did buy a bag of new different food but I actually thought Keeper ate hers so now I have no idea. At first I thought it might be ticks from the log where she found the woodchuck.

Yikes! Hives? Yes, dogs can get them. A visit to the vet on Monday morning is in our future if it doesn’t improve.

Mareen is very sick with severe bronchitis – she sounds like death warmed over. She’s been keeping her granddog named Hudson this week while she’s been so sick! I offered to come in and walk him because she is simply too sick to go outdoors. He wanted no part of me walking him down the street! No way was he leaving Grandma’s yard! But he did his job and then wanted right back on the couch with her. Sweet boy!

He’s some kind of doodle dog – love him!

Last night we had a short lived wind event – here’s my yard.

Clusters of leaves everywhere. And there’s more limbs on the trail! Ugh
A striped egg!

See the small space between the two gates? I put a panel there to keep the little girls in but tonight I saw Sarah squeeze through that space! If I hadnt seen it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it!!!!

It’s been a day – no sewing at this house. And Margaret is sick, too, so I’m solo again tomorrow. Then I go to Bob’s after church to visit Mollie and when I get home Jenny and Becky are coming to pick up the quilt. The Fever game starts at noon and then Hank is coming about 12:30 while Stan and Michele close down the textile show at the fair. No boring moments around here!

Our first dog Banshee got hives one summer on his whole underside. It was awful. It ended up he was allergic to grass the poor guy. We had to put him on prednisone to calm his underside down. I never thought a dog could be depressed but he surely was when he was taking it, but It did help. We never fertilized our back yard because we had chickens so it wasn’t that. It was just one summer that it was horrible and every time he would lay on the grass his belly acted up. So thankful it was that one summer it was the worst. After that he just would get red blotches.

Teresa – and this is why I didn’t want to go to the field yesterday – the alfalfa is tall right now and of course her belly rubbed against it. She’s still in bed right now but I hope it’s better.

I think the AI can read our thoughts and what we are thinking! You’re looking for something to help Hazel, so there are all the ads! Sickening! I think there is some way to turn that off….but I don’t know where! Haaa.
Suppose to be 90 and windy tomorrow!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I agree – I hate that AI takes over the ads! If you find out how to turn that off, tell us! 90? Really? I didn’t get to mow today so it will be a full day tomorrow. A full hot day

Mary thanks so much for coming to visit us in for offering to walk Hudson. Can’t believe he wouldn’t walk with you he does like his people for sure and he warmed up to you after you were here a while. I know he would’ve walked with you later on, but thank you again so much for offering at least he went to the bathroom for you. And the hydrangea got water and is looking great. I’m hoping Hazel isn’t allergic to something I thought about the wood tree too. it’s always something isn’t it and you are always so busy. I know they’ll love the quilt. It’s beautiful. I treasure the ones I have. I just wish I had the patience to learn to Quilt, but it isn’t as if you haven’t tried with me ha ha ha. I’m feeling a bit better. Thanks again!

The fair quilts are wonderful. You say they are not judged, yet I can see ribbons on some of them? Are the ribbons from previous shows? There is so much work in many of them. Just beautiful!
We starting to get more sun now that Aug. has arrived and its warmer, too. Finally! We have had a cool summer so far. Only one cucumber, so far, and tomatoes very green.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – participants could put their quilts in either category – judged or just for show. It increased the number of quilts at the fair because it’s fun to see them and not be inspected so closely. I loved it! No, I didn’t take anything for either category but Michele borrowed several to hang by the office door.

Oh, my goodness, how Gracie has grown! And the poor lovely Hazel. I hope she will be cured soon. Love all the quilts. I totally understand not wanting to be judged. I am my own worst judge, I think. My health is improving and so far all the tests are negative for anything bad or obvious. One more test to go next week and then I will go to the digestion specialist. I am having a little more energy and have all the cards ready to send to the two lovely ladies who want them. Thanks so much for your help with that. I, too, so look forward to reading your post everyday!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – yes, Gracie is a BIG girl and she was so scrawny as a kitten – ha! I’m so glad to hear you’re better – from whatever was ailing you. Good luck on the next test!

I call it life in the fast lane!

I am home from the 5-day retreat in MO. Loving the cooler weather and got out for a walk. I did not attend the rodeo last night here in Carson but I wish I could have. I did work in the sewing room and finished up some long arming.

You always have so much to do and I enjoy reading and seeing pics of it all! I would try something natural on Hazel–look up on line for some help. Just my honest opinion.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran – I did order a natural product – hope it comes fast. I don’t want a steroid shot unless I just have to

  7. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

I’m totally worn out just reading your days!!! But fantastic that you can still do it all! Your email is the first thing I open every morning. It makes my day and encourages me to do something!😂😂. And thank you for always sharing such interesting quilt photos! Have a wonderful Sunday.❤️❤️

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Elaine – yes, I’m still able to do almost anything around the farm but probably not as fast as I used to. That’s what’s great about retirement! Today I’m just watching basketball in the porch.

  8. Sheryl Harrison from Southern Iowa

It’s so sweet Mareen’s granddog wants to stay by her and provide comfort while she is sick. Feel better soon, Mareen. And Hazel too!
My sister was really big into entering her paintings and photography in the county fair then started entering mom’s photography and cross stitch. They both had entries selected for the state fair. I never felt confident enough to enter a cross stitch or quilt. I might if they weren’t being judged.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sheryl – yes! That’s what’s fun about this show – no worries about being judged – I loved seeing them.

Yeppars, our GSD had similiar irritation in the same area. Four vets later come to find out it was processed dog food allergies. Not environmental allergies as first suspected. But all soups are different so fingers crossed you get this figured out quicker then we did!

  10. Bea knight

    Hi Mary,
Oh my goodness for Hazel😔. When my previous dogs had bellies like that it was fleas.

Praying the vet can figure it out🙏🏻
    Praying for Hazel🙏🏻😊

The fair quilts are both varied and beautiful. Thanks for posting. Gracie is a beauty.
We have had two days of lower temps and rain. Tomorrow, we are taking our camper to a nearby State Park for a few days—our first time this summer, as it has been too hot.

Oh poor Hazel!! I hope the benadryl works. The quilts from the fair are beautiful. I had never seen plastic on fair quilts but that’s a great idea.
I just got home Thursday night from visiting my dad in WV. My daughter and I read all his birthday cards (over 100). You all are fantastic in taking time and sending cards and even writing and telling him a little about your lives. They were so interesting and he loved every one of them. He would share his chili recipe but it’s a little different each time. Sometimes it gets a little leftover taco meat or hot dog sauce. Thank you again for being so kind to a stranger.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

      Charlotte – it’s wonderful
To hear our cards made an impact on someone’s life! Yes, Kindness Matters!!🙂

  13. Martha W in WY

Oh my! So many ill. I pray for everyone to have a speedy recovery. How is Sarah squeeze through that space? I like how the quilts at your fair are covered with plastic. I’ve never seen that before but it’s a great way to protect them. I bet Michelle is happy and relieved that the fair is over. I enjoyed seeing the quilt photos. Thanks Mary.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – there’s no way to keep the quilts spotless when the building is surrounded by gravel walkways and driveways but the plastic helps. I hope next year there’s twice as many quilts at the show. Many brought quilts when they knew they wouldn’t be judged – display only.

  14. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, hard work trying to read your blog in-between ads for toe nail fungus! Is Hazel allergic to some grass? Lovely sunny day after a very cold night, sneezing and sore eye due to hayfever, but stitching away my dresden plate quilt. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – and when I go back to read the site all the ads are for livestock medications! What’s with that? I haven’t figured out what Hazel is allergic to yet.
