Thinking Back, 11-19-25

Last year on this day was the day I had surgery and the first day of my 10 day nightmare. Just knowing this date was approaching has made me anxious. I hardly want to think about it. I’m just glad it’s in the past at this point. Remember the nurse who said “you won’t like what we do to you!” And not in a good way but a threatening way after I refused to do something the day before I was released. When I said – what would you do? She said – we’ll call psych!

Now stop and think for a minute – if someone decided right now today that you were mentally unstable, just how would you convince them that you’re fine? Sounds like a novel to me but it was very real.

Connie came today – guess what we did for fun!

Yup – we went shopping for fabric in Clear Lake!

And then had lunch.

Here’s Connie’s latest project.

I just can’t imagine doing this.

Here’s the fabric I bought – wish I had taken a picture of Connie’s haul.

Uh – watch the dirty paws!

I had never seen Wicked but I watched it tonight on NBC and I loved it! Now I really want to see the sequel coming out this Friday.

Gotta end with a Mortie picture.

Looks like such a fun day out! I have to say it again, I have never seen a more beautiful ginger kitty than Miss Mortie! 😻😻😻😻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Your joke today reminds me of an older couple my husband and I used to see regularly at a coffee shop. One day I heard the Mrs. say to the Mr. “You’re wearing two left shoes!” He looked down and said “Oh!” She said “Don’t they hurt your feet?”, and he replied “No!” They both laughed, and we did too, quietly. We always called them Mr. & Mrs Two Left Feet after that, just between the two of us, of course. The Mr. had dementia and passed away not too long after that. The Mrs. was such a sweet lady, always nicely dressed, and so friendly. We always visited with her at the coffee shop, and always remembered Mr. Two Left Feet.

Great pictures of two beautiful and talented gals. I must say, I am in love with both Mortie and Hazel. Thanks for photographing them often.

Cindy – I’m going to see if I can set up an Instagram account called Hazel and Mortie

Great pictures today! There is nothing better than having lunch with a friend and fabric shopping!! I love the fabrics you picked. Connie’s cross stitch is very nice. I used to cross stitch but I’d rather quilt now!!

Glad Connie could get over your way before the weather gets bad. Old friends are the best! Loved all the quilt pictures. I’ve kinda been on a two week pause trying to get ready for a vacation. Why does the planning have to take so long! The sewing room will be my home when we get back. I’ve thought the same about Larsons and some fabric having been there for awhile. You’ll have to keep an eye out for The Quilted Steeples winter sale. It’s always been a good one.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda K – would it be possible to let me know about their sale? Larsen’s are actually missing the boat with their old fabric – long time quilters won’t shop there.

      1. Linda K

Mary, I will try. They have a Facebook page that they announce their sales. That’s where I usually see it.

Great pictures of you and Connie and your new fabric! There’s nothing better than spending the day with a long time friend.
Mortie and Hazel both look so adorable in their pictures.
Today I plan to give the kitchen a good cleaning and hope there’s some time left to work on quilting the table runner I’m making from a charm pack of Christmas fabrics.

The pattern Mortie is sitting on might be a variation “Hidding in Plain Site” on page 50 in the book BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD. Jan

A year already, that went fast. Good to see you doing all the things that make your life full. Connie is stitching Merrily, Merrily We Welcome Spring, one of my favorites. Beautiful.

Loved the joke at the end! Funny!

Mortie is the cutest cat! She came to you for a reason.

What fun you had in Clear Lake–that’s my kind of day!

Your fabric is my taste. That Mortie just melts a person’s heart. I was wondering if you like the air fryer in your new oven.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dee – I can’t even figure out the air fryer! I hate my new stove – so many buttons to push and the first time I used the stovetop, as careful as I was – in fact terrified -:I still got a mark on the burner. So what’s the deal with the air fryer?

      1. Dee in Ohio

I was interested in the air fryer aspect because having an air fryer on my countertop is not something I wanted. I have heard people love air fryers so when you got your new stove, I waited to see what you thought. I think I would be as frustrated as you.

      2. Judy

The air fryer…..at what temperature and for how long? Depends. That is the part that I do not have figured out. It has yet to find a place on my kitchen counter.
Sorting fabric scraps this week, one handed. Into day ten of shoulder replacement. I see the surgeon tomorrow. Pain? No. Pain was before surgery.
I got a white smooth top stove in 2007. I questioned whether I wanted a black or white, thinking white would be harder to keep clean. The salesman told me that might have been true at one time but not at that time. My brother-in-law said that in his former apartment he had a white top and it wasn’t hard to clean; he did think that I would probably clean it more often than he. I haven’t figured out how to not get the marks, but a little cleaner and a little elbow grease removes them. If that doesn’t work, I take my paring knife at an angle and scrape. Marks come right off. I do not spend a lot of time cleaning the stove top.
Lovely pictures today. Thanks for sharing.

Love that you & Connie got together for lunch & fabric shopping! I agree that nurse should lose her license! Being in the hospital is stressful enough without being threatened! Love Connie’s sampler! I always enjoyed counted cross stitch & made quite a few samplers. Unfortunately my hands can’t handle that anymore! Yesterday morning was spent at my insurance agent’s office downloading a new app! Why does everything have to be so complicated? But having this app does save me $$ on my insurance! Ron & I then went to a huge grocery called Jungle Jim’s near by. All I can say is if they don’t have it…it doesn’t exist! Lots of ethnic food & some I have no idea what it is! Produce is wonderful & most are reasonably priced. I take him many times just get him out of his house. Going to a documentary this afternoon at the clubhouse.

Thanks for sharing pictures of your outing with Connie. Looks like so much fun. What else would you do when you get together, but go to a quilt shop. I love it!
The fabrics you selected are beautiful. Reminds me that I need to purchase neutrals when I go fabric shopping. My stash is lacking in neutrals so, I guess a trip to the quilt shop is in my near future.

Fabric shopping and lunch with a friend! Hopefully that will be a good memory for this date instead of a horrible hospital experience.

I’m going to the Sunday matinee to see Wicked. My friend who usually goes to the movies with me hasn’t seen the first Wicked so she isn’t interested in going. I don’t mind going alone.

What a sweet picture of Mortie on the quilt.

  14. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Love that Connie and you were able to get together for lunch and fabric shopping! What fun!
The nurse who threatened you last year should lose her license. Just terrible service. I’m sorry you had to go through that. Scary. 😱
Cute Hazel picture. And Morty, too.

  15. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, so glad you and Connie got to spend time together! Friends and fabric make a happy 💙!!!

  16. Kathy in western NY

You and Connie looked so happy to be together for lunch. She’s like my daughter with her cross stitch pieces. Those days are behind me, I’m happy with the ones I’ve made in the past. I’d rather use my stash.
I too watched Wicked again and feel the same that I’m anxious now to see how it ends. Such good writing for a script. And a tale of acceptance.
I finished one stocking yesterday for a new family member and was inspired to keep on track to make Christmas gifts. I bought a cute handmade gift card holder and it was $12 but it was adorable in recycled wool. I can do that as my grandkids are at the age where gift cards are a wiser choice.

  17. Susan Leone

Glad you guys had a chance to be together and do what you like to do best! Also glad that you have enjoyed a good year with fur babies and fabric! Health Care sucks these days…glad I I retired 5 years ago after 38 years in a field I loved but now has changed so much I dont recognize it. Happy n Blessed Thanksgiving to you n yours!

  18. Deb from Iowa

So great that you girls get together to share your love of fabric. Do I spy a pie on your counter? 😋

  19. Vicki in Iowa City

I love your fabric haul. This fall, I went to Larsen’s Mercantile in Clear Lake, while my husband visited with a friend from his childhood. I didn’t know what to expect for fabric and quilting supplies, and was happily surprised by both the quantity and quality. I walked out of the store with 3 pieces of fabric. Two will be used in a table topper and the 3rd is backing fabric. Happy haul!
We are finishing up fall outdoor work. I will be glad to be done with all that!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – yes, Larsen’s has a small but decent fabric dept – they need to have decent sale, however, to get rid of all the old stuff that’s been on the shelves for years.

  20. Marcia-SW Ohio

The two of you look great and happy doing what you love- fabric shopping and lunch. Bet it was great to catch up.
Loved seeing the ‘ghost’ quilt. I have 3 books to make 3 ‘ghost’ quilts as gifts. Glad to see it in another color way as mine will be using a variety of bright charms.
Operating at full speed to get Christmas gift quilts done. My sewing room looks like a tornado hit it. A major cleaning is needed in January.
With Thanksgiving upon us, I need to stop, breathe and reflect on my many blessings. My family are truly blessed.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cathy – sure, it’s from a Civil War book – everytime I show something on the chair , I get this question.

  21. Diane O in Michigan

Great pictures of you and Connie!! Love that you went fabric shopping and found some more fabric that needed to be loved by you! Hazel is adorable in her picture, but those paws, sit back a bit girl. Mortie, no words to say how cute that little one is!!

  22. Bridget

the answer is to to ask the nurse is if she has any past sanctions on her license. did you know in most states you can look up a medical license and see complaints that have been filed? and actions the State Board may have taken on the license? It sure does help sort out the the shaft from the wheat.

  23. Diana in Des Moines

So glad your crappy memory was made better by a visit from Connie!
I wanted to watch Wicked but hubby and I have been watching The American Revolution on PBS, so I recorded the movie. Will watch this weekend while I sew.
Today my granddaughters preschool is having Family Feast for students and parents. Grandparents will have to do today, her parents can’t attend.
Have been recovering from my church Christmas sale and then a terrible cold. But back to normal today (whatever that is😉) and ready to sew. Took one quilt in for long arming, and have several more to prep.
Foggy this morning, and still dreary. But SO excited my favorite holiday is in a week! 🦃♥️🦃
    I love Mortie.

  24. Sandy

Hi Mary, Morty has chosen a lovely quilt to rest on, l guess she has plenty to choose from! Love your new fabrics, l am doing 2 quilts that use a lot of neutral colors for the background, so keep digging through the boxes to get variety! Still cannot believe what that nurse said to you, time for her to retire! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Looks like you and Connie had a wonderful day out and about. I just adore seeing photos of Mortie. It’s still is amazing that she just wandered into your life.
